[Q] voice/data @ same time - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Just wondering if the GS4 does voice and data at the same time (without the Verizon standard response of "sure, with wifi"). I haven't had any of the more recent Android devices, so I'm not sure if they, or even the GS4 do.
Thanks.

I do not, if I had, I'd have tried, and not be asking.
Seems however, it's been discussed, moments after I posted - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292613
So I guess it works with 4G, but not 3G.

yep.
works with 4G while on a voice call.

I can confirm that when on LTE, I can make phone calls and use data at the same time. I've not tried it, but I know that by design, CDMA does not allow simultaneous access of voice and data. So outside of LTE coverage, expect that.

I believe it's impossible. At best, all you'll be able to do is voice and nothing more. No data at all, whether 3G or 4G. Network authentication is done differently on an LTE device. They will ask you for an ESN number, which you will not be able to find anywhere on the device.

Eh, not entirely true. I checked out the carrier and it's sprint's cdma network so he should get voice and 3g data fine. Obviously won't be getting anything above 3g speeds though.
speeds though
To the OP if you are really motivated to do it, I would read this as it shows how others have done it for the thunderbolt.

Sprint doesn't use a compatible data network authentication scheme as Verizon, so no, he will have no data service unless he can find a ROM for the Tbolt specifically ported from a Sprint device. It's well known that Sprint devices such as the EVO line don't work on Verizon, and that Verizon devices such as the dInc and dInc2 will not work on Sprint. I've worked with both.

It's easy enough to look up. Search the dInc forums. I know there's several threads there addressing this issue. I'd be surprised if the EVO 4G forum didn't have a few too, and I know there's at least 1 or 2 in the Tbolt forum that address this issue as well; a fact I considered pointing out to the OP. Furthermore, Tbolts don't have ESN numbers. They interface with both the 3G and 4G protocols differently than standard CDMA devices.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138411
This kinda explains what I'm saying. If you can't do it with a straight CDMA device without a world-class hassle, it's functionally impossible with a Tbolt.

Yeah, perhaps not with sprint's network (after reading), but certain networks seem to work like Metro's. If the OP has to ask though, he probably doesn't have the will/determination to persist on doing whatever it takes though. He'd be better off getting something like a nexus s for sprint and use it on boost or an evo of some sort.
Yeah I was just confused weather I will be able to read the esn and MEID locations. Right now I have Dinc with Boost mobile, mms, data, sms and voice all working.
But now I want the Thunderbolt and because it uses a Sim card I wasn't entirely sure.

Surf and Talk at Same time?

I haven't been able to verify this anywhere. . . Will the S2 on the At&T network allow you to surf and talk at the same time (simultaneous voice/data)?
Thanks!
I believe that the majority of at&t phones will allow you to do that. I believe it is the differences in the way there network is set up that allow it and not necessarily the phones. But to confirm yes the s2 does allow you to do both.
This has always been the case on AT&T, smartphones being able to do talk/surf simultaneously. One of the main reasons I've stuck with them for this long. They are losing this edge quickly as most cell companies go lte as lte can do talk/surf as well.

This advantage AT&T has is not going away as quick as some think, either.
Verizon's Voice over LTE not enabled until at least 2012, possibly 2013.
Sprint does not use Voice over WiMax, either. CDMA for both... Ouch.

Any AT&T 3G phone ("4G" is just tweaked 3G) can do this when in a 3G service area.
Not possible on EDGE.

Using Sprint 3g network & talking on the phone at the same time

I do not have any program or app so I can use wifi or internet calling so this is not an internet phone call. It regular Sprint phone call. I do not know how this is working. So I really cannot answer your questions on how to make this work.
Can we figure out how to get this running on every Sprint smartphone or every Evo 4G LTE.
Look at the video I posted on youtube.

Slow Mobile Data

Hey all,
A few weeks ago, I switched from MeanBean to Jelly-Bam ROM. At the time, I thought this was a Jelly-Bam issue, but I'm pretty sure it's not now. When I switched ROMs, I noticed that my data was slow. I work in Baltimore County, MD and lost my 4G signal. I have occasionally seen 4G at home since I noticed this issue, but it's rare. I typically only get 3G and often it's less than 1MB/s. I tried switching back to MeanBean and that didn't help (I had updated the radio before switching back, I would think that would only help). I have updated my radio (currently running 1.12.11.1210) and that hasn't helped. What made me think it's not the ROM is that my wife has a stock Evo 4G LTE and she also has slow data speeds. BUT, my brother has an S3, also on Sprint and in the same town and he's getting 4G fine. I do have my have my Network Mode set to LTE/CDMA (actually on Jelly-Bam it's LTE/CMDA/EvDo). I'm running Jelly Bam 7.8.0 (CyanogenMod version 10.1.0-RC2-jewel). Please let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions as to what could be the problem with my phone. If I can provide more information, let me know and I'll get it for you.
Thanks so much in advance.
Baltimore and supporting areas are still going thru LTE upgrades, it's still on-off for some areas. Annapolis is lit 100% as far as I can tell.

Is your evidence of the S3 pulling in 4G while your device does not anecdotal or have you performed a side-by-side comparison? The answer to this will help us narrow down your problem.

Unless things have gone backwards, I don't think that is the case. I used go get 4G in Baltimore. I've seen as high as 25MB/sec, maybe even higher. Now I don't see 4G ever down here. (I've seen it a few times at my home in York County, PA since this issue, but it doesn't last long and the fastest I've seen is maybe 5MB/sec. But most times its 3G and less than 1MB/sec.)

My evidence is based on my seeing absolutely no 4G at the time (I've seen a few few times briefly as noted in the post above.), while my brother who is less than 1 mile away see's great 4G (faster than his home wifi so over 15 MB/s). I have consistently had terrible speeds around town while he consistently has good speeds. No, we have not stood side by side and done a test, but I know how my signals used to be and how they should be and I'm nowhere near that.
I was actually near the Key Bridge last night and where I usually get LTE or at least have in the past, I got solid 3G, I tried airplane method and reboot, switching from CDMA back to LTE to no avail. Soon as I got back into Pasadena the LTE was solid. I never was sure about the differences between the Samsund devices vs. HTC but for me, the signal is sporadic which in the past has been due to Sprint upgrades. Hope it gets better and check out the SG4RU site for specific information about your area. Thru have a ton of info that will let you aware of the work and or upgrades in your specific area in Baltimore.

It just doesn't make sense to me that Sprint reception would decrease by so much and (as far as I can tell) completely lose 4G coverage at my work and mostly lose it at my home at the same time, while my brother continues to receive great service on his S3. I just don't see how that could happen.
Does anyone have any other ideas? Any ideas what could be wrong with my phone? Anything else I can update? Any settings for me to check that I might have missed? (I feel like I've check them all, but I'm up for anything at this point.)
Thanks in advance. This is driving me nuts.

I'd like to throw my own recent experience in here.
My wife has the OG Evo. I have the Evo LTE. While I do not get LTE in this area, I still get 3G coverage. The other day, out of the blue, my wife's 3G quit working and she has next to no service while I have solid coverage, and yes this is side by side.
Call me crazy right now because if what I am about to say, but I have this inkling of a feeling that Sprint is directly behind her almost completely losing signal in an area where 3 towers surround us to attempt to get one of us to call in, complain, and get coerced into an upgrade (she's due for one as of June 1st, go figure right?
I've noticed this happen whenever I was due for upgrades on my older phones too such as the Hero, Moment, etc... if I could pinpoint what they're doing, if they're doing anything, they'd be in some majorly serious ish.
So, I called Sprint and they walked me through #72786# update on my wife's phone. Apparently both of our phones were "off the network". We went through it for my wife's phone and it put it back on the network, whatever that means, but it didn't improve her service. They're now telling me our options are to take it to the nearest Sprint store with a repair center (the closest 2 are about an hour away each) or pay the shipping to return it to HTC.
They told me I could do the #72786# update on my phone and that it would not get rid of my root. Does anyone know this to be true? I'd like to try it on mine since they say it also is not "on the network". Because it does a firmware update, I wanted to check to see if that would interfere with the root access on my phone or my ability to gain root again, should I ever get rid of root.
Which brings me to my next question, if the above is safe for my rooted phone, I try it, and it does not work. How do I go about returning my phone to it's stock configuration? I've read a little about RUU, but haven't been able to figure out enough of it or where to get the RUU to feel comfortable doing it yet. If I do an RUU, will I be able to get my root (and s-off) rights back on my phone? How about if they try to bring my phone completely up-to-date? Is there a way to root currently up-to-date phones?
I know I've packed a lot of info and questions in there, but I would really appreciate any help and answers that people can give me. Thanks so much!!

No, she is not rooted. So for now, I figured I'd start with trying this on my phone. Unfortunately, the MSL reader app wasn't able to read it. I'm actually in an old version of my phone. I'm going to install my last backup and work from that since I'm somewhat hopeful this will fix my problem. I might as well do it from my latest ROM. I'll have that up in 10 minutes or less and I guess I'll try to work through your instructions...
If it works on my phone, I guess I'll go through it with my wife's then. I have everything important backed up on mine. I'll have to check hers real quick to make sure she doesn't have any recent pictures, but I think those should be on Dropbox. I assume it will tell me before I might have to do that so I'll know to double-check everything if it comes to that.
Sorry if I've asked any questions that are explained in the instructions...I just wanted to reply and now I'll continue reading through them.
Hard reset on your phone will wipe everything in data/app as well as your internal sd. Your external will be fine as well as your wife's external however she will lose all apps, sms, mms, call logs, bookmarks via stock app, as well as any system settings.

Yeah, I didn't dial. But when I hit the last #, what I entered before goes away and nothing happens.
Will these changes stick through a new ROM update? I guess I'll try them on the last stock save I have and then try to restore my MeanBean ROM (the last ROM I had that worked with 4G...Jelly-BAM seems to be what broke it.).

Have full Verizon 4G signal, simultaneous voice and data not working

I am traveling and am in an area with fantastic 4G coverage. The other day I was on the phone doing an conference call and had my phone tethered to my laptop. As soon as my call connected I last all internet coverage as far as the tethering is concerned. As soon as my call ended my data kicked back in. What gives? It used to work, why does it not anymore?
Sounds like some dirty ploy on VZW 's end to restrict tethering.

You know this is a good point. I am using the widget bypass and with the recent update for the phone you get prompted about a subscription error. As I'm sure you already know you just simply hit the home button and it still stays connected and works fine. I swear I was talking to my Wife a couple days ago and it was working, to my best knowledge this just started not working as 2-3 days ago. Anyone else experience this?

Just made a quick call to 611 and let the prompting stay connected in the back ground. I then tried surfing on the phone and it worked fine, so I then tried on the laptop tethered and it seemed to work. Maybe a glitch, or maybe they are going after tethering... Hmm
Maybe its just conference calls you cant tether with.

Conference call that I was on at this time was called into one phone listening to others in the same room over speaker. I don't think this is the case.
Been on the phone for a half hour and it's working perfect. Weird!
Necro-thread! But, I realized the other day that I am having the same issue as the OP. I used to be able to continue surfing over my 4G hotspot while also talking on the phone. Somewhere along the way, the capability has stopped working. I have Unlimited Data and use FoxFi to enable tethering. And, like I said, this used to work. I've had my S4 since May, 2013, but I'm not sure when, during all that time, it stopped.
It really come to the fore today because a friend told me about Verizon Advanced Calling and I logged into my account to enable that. I noticed two things. One, the S4 is not a "compatible device", even though Samsung says the phone supports VoLTE. And, two, one of the features that VZW touts for Adanced Calling is being able to do simultaneous voice and data over 4G LTE.
This is all starting to make me think my simultaneous voice and data went away at some point when Verizon turned off the capability via a phone firmware update or something. Because, of course, they want me to buy a new phone - ideally while also giving up Unlimited Data.
That also makes me thing I might be able to "fix" my phone using SS and a ROM and maybe an Xposed module. But anyway....
Can anybody shed any light on this? I don't do it that often (talk on the phone while I'm tethered), but when I do want to do it, it dang sure sucks that it doesn't work any more!

Okay, now I really don't know what the deal is. I just tested it, sitting in my office. and, today, it's working. I have a strong 4G signal here. I called my desk phone and answered and set the handset down. I turned on FoxFi, then connected to my hotspot with my tablet. While the voice call was still connected, I had no trouble running SpeedTest on my tablet and getting 40 Mbps download.
Hmmm.... Maybe not working the other day is some other problem with my phone....
Okay, never mind...
