Padlock during boot - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So, I just brought home a brand spanking new GS4 from a verizon store. Came out of a sealed box. I shut it down just now to put an SD card in. I boot it back up and notice something very peculiar, during the first boot after putting the card in, I didn't get the Galaxy S4 logo, I didn't get the Verizon logo, just an unlocked padlock and the word "Custom"
Kinda like my N10 which indicates the unlocked bootloader during boot. I shut it back down, rebooted, and it went away. It was just the first time after plugging in a micro-sd. Any ideas?

You didn't root or anything?

I'm getting the same thing, but followed by the Samsung and Verizon splash screens. I am rooted.

Hmm, interesting. Well, it doesn't seem to be doing it any more. Who knows.

This did come up for a lot of people after flashing the prerelease kernel for rooting. Once back on stock firmamware rebooting twice fixes, as it allows the bootloader to read and recognize that you are stock. If its gone now, you should be good. Go into odin mode and look in the top left, does it say custom or official?

trouble rooting urgent

trying to root a friends gs2 i777 and after using odin to run the tar file, it started to reboot and has been stuck on the samsung logo for about 30 minutes now. i was just told that he is still on froyo so i think that had something to do with it but he is no longer using an at&t sim card so it wouldnt let him upgrade to 2.3 over the air. but i am stuck at the logo screen and tried to reboot back into stock recovery and it gets stuck at the logo still. please someone help

I'm pretty sure the i777 never had froyo... Have you researched this issue?

I did that and it just boots back into the Samsung logo
Hold power down and volume down and plug it in for download mode and flash a kernel that can wipe and install.

Or if at bar.....
Hold all three buttons till Samsung appears and dissapears then let go of all three to get into recovery menu to see if you have a kernel.... then wipe clear data and reflash.

I think the moral of the story is not to flash ROMs while drinking at a bar.

The i777 NEVER had Froyo. It was released with GB 2.3.4. When trying to root "a friends" phone it's best to have read everything and be prepared if things go wrong. Its a hard sell, when you trying to explain why their phone is borked. Also I find Heimdall a bit easier to use than Odin.
Nobody seems to be asking the obvious question: are you positive this is an I777, and not another variant of the S2, like a skyrocket, our even the 1900?
Take out the battery and look at the label under the battery. what model does it say the phone is?
I agree with wgoldfarb, I very nearly did the same thing to my work phone a few months back. It was in a ballistic case, and I couldn't tell the difference until I opened it and held it side by side with my i777,but it turned out it was an older infuse. $20 says that if he's positive he had froyo, it's the same situation.

Sorry, but drunk posting from a bar about trying to root a phone, but not being sure what phone it is (again, it never had 2.2...), has no place on this forum..

[Q] tampered with

Didn't think I would be back so soon...BUT I noticed that when booting into fastboot or recovery, above the "unlocked" in red is now a 'tampered' in black...is this true for all dna rooters?...any way to get rid of that annoying message...It's essentially meaningless but who needs it...
It is true for all who have unlocked, and installed a custom recovery.

The tampered message goes away after you lock your bootloader and RUU to stock. The phone will say relocked instead of locked but no tampered message.

Curious as to who does that.. it's a response to unlocking but is it an htc thing or the big V..seems a tad like big brother watching over. If one were to reset to factory default, does it go back like day one? I would think way down the road if one were to sell their phone, that little message would not be a selling point...oh well.

also it did not say it when bootloader was unlocked, so it happened after root access...

Getting new phone under extended warranty

Hey guys my screen went out yesterday. I took it to Verizon and I am getting refurbished rezound under the total protection plan.
I am rooted...unlocked....custom boot loader...and Rom...c
Do I need to try to relock and factory reset every thing?
Since the screen went out due to bad hardware...does me having custom Rom and software screw me when they put a new screen in the old phone?

Its hard to do without a screen. But if you use the rezound toolkit you can run the ruu and that will get you back to stock. the progress will show on the command prompt so you will know when its done. Like the post above said, better safe than sorry. Chances are they won't even check though.

Best to unroot if not and they see its rooted they can deny your claim and charge you full price. Not worth the risk

Didn't unroot. Didn't S-ON. That's just me, though. Mainly because I forgot. I had no problem with it from Asurion. Though, as others said, better safe than sorry. You never know.

Me7 restarted with unlocked custom screen

I was on mdk rooted running hyperdrive 8.1 that soft bricked my phone. I tried to Odin everything I could find. The only way I could get back running was to flash a set from darkmenace (thank you very much) to this me7 crap. Of course now no custom Rom which makes me despise the phone a little.
Last night I was streaming hbo go over the mhl adapter when I had a random restart. This time I got the familiar Samsung splash screen with the unlocked lock and the word custom. This got me a little excited thinking there might be a way to get a custom recovery back or a custom Rom....
Was this a random fluke or something usable?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
with my phone rooted I have noticed that when I do a restart mine also shows custom and has a unlock on it if I hold vol up & pwr while it is restarting I can get into the stock recovery with a normal power up if I try to go to recovery it just bypasses it and boots
Been able to get into stock recovery no matter which way I boot....thought maybe it had to do with it being a random reboot versus one I initiated.

It means nothing more than the system was modified at one point.
It means absolutely nothing regarding a ME7 bootloader exploit.

[Q] Stuck in download mode

I am COMPLETELY NEW, to the wonderful world of rooting, bricking, etc. I have recently used poot. apk, as well as ministro II, and after obtaining root access, I started to backup my phone. When i started, my phone, which is an LG Optimus Elite, has gotten stuck in downloading mode. To be precise, the phone has LG at the top, and under it, in a gray box. It says, " Download is in progress. Do not disconnect cable." Ive tried removing the battery, nothing. Tried to do a hard reset, and it doesnt even so much as flash. It has been stuck at this screen for a week now. I have looked through multiple videos, and threads. Still i am without my phone, and i really do not want to purchase a new phone. Can anybody help me please???

Yes, i have removed battery, and charger. Now the phone will not turn on unless plugged up to the computer. Even then, there is no need to activate power button. The phone automatically comes on, with the same, " Download in progress", screen.
Longer than 15 minutes?
