Hey guys,
I've been searching for an answer for days now and I finally decided to make an account here on XDA.
I recently unlocked the bootloader of my Atrix (I have superuser and all) and now I want to upload a custom ROM (CM7). I followed the steps on the CM7 thread for installation yet I was left scratching my head and eventually was extremely frustrated after many reboots, configurations, and even a hard reset!
I used ROM Manager to get CWM, I flashed the latest version, and entered recovery mod, both from the app and manually. Nothing - just the Android Recovery. Tried many times, sometimes I was given a "failed to boot 2, starting RSD mode" error but most of the times I was just taken to the normal recovery.
I read somewhere that the install-recovery.sh file found in the system had to be deleted so I downloaded ES File Explorer, enabled root and writing and successfully deleted it (or so I thought), I was taken to the android recovery again! When I checked the file explorer again, install-recovery.sh was back... I have tried many times and it keeps on returning.
What am I doing wrong? I don't even know how to use fastboot, I am a noob and 90% of the language used on this forum is foreign to me hahaha (I traded my iPhone 4 for the Atrix less than two weeks ago). Also, I accidentally deleted my install-recovery.sh.bak file, is that important?
Any help would be appreciated.

Alright, calm down, and dont panic, I was a noob too, just dont do anything rash and this'll be fine. First off, the install-recovery.sh.bak thing, or whatever you said it was called, is just a backup of whatever it was replacing, hence the .bak file extension. Now, you can still get into Android right, everything boots correctly and whatnot, or are you not able to boot right now? Also, it says youre unlocked for sure, correct? Like, when you boot, it says Unlocked up in the corner? We're going to get you through this, just answer these questions first

Thanks for clarifying regarding the bak file. No, it does not say unlocked at the top corner when booting, i assumed having the superuser app meant that I was unlocked/bootloader unlocked. The am I missing something here?
Also, my phone is totally functional. In fact, I am typing this on it

Yeah, your not unlocked at all... maybe rooted, but not unlocked. See my signature for noob guide.

I can't install RSDlite, it gives me error 29** or something like that, have tried multiple download links and I cannot install the x64 driver, my desktop is running 32 bit which is probably the issue I'm guessing... Any alternates? It gives me a "processor type not compatible" error.

Have you tried the automatic unlock linked to in Swift's N00B guide? It doesn't get any easier than that.
It's packaged with RSDLite 5.3.1. It's the one I used to unlock. Don't see why it wouldn't still work. There's a link to Motorola's driver page there as well.
Do not use the CWM packaged with it though, it's outdated. Flash romracer's or ROM Manager's.

Yes I have.
I followed all the steps and eventually it got to the unique ID part, no ID was shown, googled it and found out that I had to use RSDlite first, but there's my problem.. Also tried the fastboot oem method, same problem.

You had mentioned you were trying to use the x64 drivers on a 32-bit machine. Did you ever get around to installing the correct x86 ones from the Motorola site?

See my previous post, #7. If you go to that automatic unlock thread, there is a link to the Motorola drivers page in the instructions. Look at the prerequisites.

My father-in-law got a Prime about a year ago and used it for a month. Last night I came into my possession! So with what little time I had last night to play with it I unlocked the bootloader. I'm running 4.0.3 and the build is 9.4.2.21 (I know the last number is 20-something but I don't have it in front of me so I can't verify this but I think it's 21).
So I have the bootloader unlocked but I am a little cautious on how to proceed. I'm not new to rooting cause I did it on my OG Droid, Thunderbolt, and Verizon SGS3 but I've never used NV Flash so I just have a few things I was hoping the Prime community could help me with. I have read through the development forum but nothing really lays out steps. There is a video to unlock the bootloader and other videos showing how to root. Like I said, I just wanna make sure I'm doing it right.

You have unlocked so now get nvflash done http://androidroot.mobi/t3_nvflash/ you can only do this while on ICS and if you make backups of the files created during the process you can never hard brick your device so get this done first.
Once that is done you can flash TWRP for ICS (make sure it is ICS version while on ICS bootloader, you will install a JB version later on)
You can now go about updating to jellybean bootloader and custom rom. You do not need to root first as the root will be built into the custom rom.
The easiest way I can suggest is to follow my instructions in the second post here for "Upgrade Instructions for ICS" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674827
If you wanted to install energy rom instead of Hairybean just replace the hairybean 1.51 rom in the instructions with energy rom and do the same.

1) I read through that second post and the TWRP update says "HairyBean TWRP Update." I'm guessing what this does is install a JB version of TWRP. Question is, does it matter that is is labeled with "HairyBean" if I am going to install something other than that ROM?
2) ROM suggestions? I just read some posts of people saying they really like Energy ROM. How's HairyBean? Comparison between the two?

1. Hairybean Twrp is just a version I made that looks like you are in Jellybean and to me has a more logical layout. There is also an installer script that you run from windows to make it easier for people to install. If you want the default look then go to the twrp website and get the ics version and run the commands manually. It makes no difference what twrp you are running it is just cosmetic.
2. They are both based on stock rom, Hairybean looks more like the standard Jellybean where as Energy rom is themed. It is all down to personal preference. Try both and see which one you prefer.
edit.. Don't forget you are going to need an ICS version of twrp first. The hairybean twrp is for after you have flashed the JB bootloader.

I downloaded that but it says in your post to open the .bat file in the zip.
Can I just flash ICS TWRP using an app like ROM toolbox or can I only do it through a windows machine using the .bat file?

Ah, are you using linux or mac? The bat file is for windows yes.

You can do it thru the tablet but it is a last resort really.
Download - ADB / Terminal method (not recommended):
Download the corresponding .blob file above. Save it to the root of your /sdcard directly (internal memory only) and rename it to twrp.blob
Launch terminal emulator or connect to your computer and open an adb shell, then type the following:
su
dd if=/sdcard/twrp.blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
Then reboot normally (NOT to recovery) to complete installation.

Yea, you know, I think I'll just do it through my PC. Sounds like the safer method!
Just reading up on NV Flash right now. That seem like the most complicated process compared to what you laid out for me above....but it doesn't look too bad.

Yea, not too worried. Like I said, I've rooted every Android phone I've had. Also had the HP Touchpad for a while and that thing was scary at times when using mooboot.

I've got a problem.....I can't figure out how to flash TWRP for ICS. From my rooting experience, I was going to flash it through ROM Manager or ROM toolbox but you need root in order to do that. I can't seem to get root though. I tried Zedomax and TPSparkyRoot but I can't get root access. How do I flash TWRP or any recovery for that matter without obtaining root access?
I did the NV Flash and it went good. FYI

Extract it to your pc.
Power off the prime and then hold down power button and volume down for about 10 seconds until you see icons on your screen. Press volume down to go to the usb icon and then press volume up to enter fastboot mode (it will say entering fastboot mode and freeze on your screen, this is normal)
Make sure you have the drivers installed on pc for fastboot. You probably did it when you did nvflash but if not get them here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426502
Now run the bat file from the zip you extracted earlier and follow the onscreen instructions.

Got ya!
I did all that and it says it installed OK but how do I get into the recovery now?
The CMD window closes and my Prime is still on the fastboot screen. What buttons do I hold/press to get into TWRP?
Edit - NEVERMIND! Got there! Just had to hit the volume up button!

Hello everyone, This is my first post on this forum, as I only rooted my prime a few months ago, and had not had any problems. I was running Hairybean 1.55 and decided to upgrade to the new 2.11 rom. I followed the instructions very closely and first upgraded to the 4.2.1 bootloader/ recovery. This step seemed to go fine. However, duing the install of the 2.11 rom, my Prime completely froze on the screen where you select the Asus options/apps/wallpapers/etc. I had no choice but to hard boot the Prime.
Now it boots directly into TWRP.
Since cache/dalvik, system, were all wiped, and Format Data was performed, there is no OS on the device. The major problems are that:
External SD card will not mount and is not recognized by device
When going into the "Mount" function in TWRP, only System can be mounted with the toggle. Data, Cache, or SDCard will not mount.
I am able to ADB push the "Upgrade Hairybean 4.2.1 Bootloader & Recovery.zip" file to /SDCard, but when I try to install it on the device it fails due to the fact "cache" will not mount.
I am trying to push the "Hairybean 2.11.zip" file to the Prime using ADB, but I get a "Protocol Failure" from the push command (the full command syntax I am using is: adb push "Hairybean 2.11.zip" /sdcard/"Hairybean 2.11.zip")
I do have a reasonable amount of experience rooting. This is the 5th Android device I have rooted. However, I am not very skilled in ADB.
Any advice anyone could give would be greatly appreciated. If I am totally hosed, does anyone have any experience sending an out-of-warranty unlocked Prime back to Asus for repair (if this is even repairable)?

What you describe with nothing being able to mount normally only happens if you install a different TWRP than the one provided in the Upgrade zip.
Are you sure you didn't try to install another recovery after installing the "Upgrade Hairybean 4.2.1 Bootloader & Recovery.zip" ?

Thanks for responding, Flumpster. No, I installed the "Upgrade Hairybean 4.2.1 Bootloader & Recovery.zip" and then went straight to installing the "Hairybean 2.11". That is when it froze at the Asus options screen. Another interesting thing I didn't mention before is that is completely wiped my microSD card. Luckily I had backed up all the contents to a pc. I hadn't even downloaded another recovery, so there is no way I could have. Is this pretty much a hopeless case?

Well the wiping the SDcard part is written in the requirements of the hairybean OP so you're to blame for that one for not reading
As for the big problem at moment can you still get into bootloader?
If so can you try the first fix on the following link please.
Also can you tell me what the long number is on the top left of the bootloader screen.

Sorry, I guess I didn't read it correctly that the external microSD would get wiped in the process as well as the internal "SDcard" storage. I always make sure my internal and external storage are backed up anyway, so it wasn't a big deal.
I can not get my prime to boot into the bootloader. Not matter what I try, the first thing I see after the Asus screen is the TeamWin splash screen. It then goes to TWRP and wants me to put in my "password" even though I have never used that. I hit cancel and it goes into TWRP. Perhaps there is something I'm doing wrong? I hold "volume down and power" until the "unlocked message appears in the top left and then release both buttons.
If I am able to ABD push the blob file in your other post onto my internal SD, can I then run the file using an ADB shell or the TWRP terminal or something? If so, is there anyway you can give me some quick instructions on doing so?

AH.. my bad mate.. I thought you was talking about the internal being wiped..
It definitely should not have wiped your external sd card.. There isn't even an option there to do that I don't think.
Are you sure it has been wiped. Have you tried looking at it on your computer?
As for your other problem can you make sure you have adb drivers installed and then try adb reboot bootloader while in twrp.

Yes.. while in twrp connect the cable to pc and type adb reboot bootloader from command prompt.

Ok. The ADB command worked to get into the bootloader. Here is what it says at the top left of the bootloader screen:
Key driver not found.. Booting OS
Android cardhu-user bootloader (1.00 e) released by "WW_epad-10.6.1.8-20130225" A03
Starting Fastboot USB download protocol
Given this, should I go ahead and try installing the TWRP.blob file from your other thread link?

Ok. The ADB command worked to get into the bootloader. Here is what it says at the top left of the bootloader screen:
Key driver not found.. Booting OS
Android cardhu-user bootloader (1.00 e) released by "WW_epad-10.6.1.8-20130225" A03
Starting Fastboot USB download protocol
Given this, should I go ahead and try installing the TWRP.blob file from your other thread link?

That is really your only option. If that doesn't work it looks like you might be hard bricked.
Quite a lot of people over on the TF300 forums ended up in the same position after their normal Asus update and only some could unbrick.

Just to make sure I know what I'm doing. I have put the blob file in my ADB directory. Now are these the commands? :
adb shell
fastboot -i 0x0b05 flash recovery twrp.blob
Then if that doesn't work, I try:
adb shell
dd if=/sdcard/twrp.blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
In that post you say to reboot normally, not to recovery. But since I have no rom installed, I need to go back to recovery and try to flash the Hairybean 2.11 rom again. Is that correct?
Well, I don't know if that is going to work anyway. When I try to open an ADB shell it says "device not found" while the prime is at the bootloader screen. My pc shows it connecting though, and in device manager it says "device is working properly". Any thoughts?
And if I boot back into TWRP using the RCK button, it will then find the device in ADB and open a shell.

Fastboot is not adb. You need the Fastboot.exe

I am going to brick my tablet like yours to try and get out of it.
Try the Fastboot method for now from bootlader.

Ok, so option one does not seem to work in this case. Is this what I need to do for option 2?
In Twrp: ADB push twrp.blob to the /sdcard directory.
Then open an "ADB shell"
type "su" then return.
type "dd if=/sdcard/twrp.blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4" then return?
Then try to go back into TWRP and install Hairybean 2.11?

Well, bricking your own tablet is a little extreme, haha. I do appreciate all the effort you are making on my part to troubleshoot this issue though. Good luck. I'm confident you'll figure something out. You do great work with the HairyBean roms.

I have nvflash backups.. I can unbrick at any time mate.
When you tried it the bootloader way with fastboot what was happening?

However, nothing happens on the prime. It seems to freeze the bootloader such that pushing the up-volume button will not select RCK to go back into TWRP. I have to do a reboot from ADB.
I don't suppose there is a way to do a NVFlash back to stock or something (or you would have mentioned that already :laugh: ) I am not familiar at all with NVFLash. But it sounds like I should make myself familiar with it.

You can only use nvflash if you created backups with it while on ICS.
You know when it says that sending recovery/writing recovery in fastboot, do you see a blue line filling?
No, there is no blue line. Nothing on the bootloader screen seems to change at all.

So I am trying to get my TF201 from clockwork (running VirtiousPrime .21 4.0.3) to stock. I took the stock .21 blob and put it in ADB folder and ran.
fastboot -i 0x0b05 flash system blob
It just says "Waiting for Device"
That command was confirmed for a TF300, but I couldn't find what exactly to type for the TF201. Is that correct? If so, any idea why it says waiting for device and never continues.
I have some questions for you. Are you ICS or JB bootloader ?
Did you make the copy yourself or find one?
Are you able to use nvflash?

When I hold power and down the top says 9.4.2.15 then it goes to the screen of (Wipe Data, USB, Android). Maybe that helps on what bootloader I have.
I have never used nvflash before. I received the tablet just how I described and am just trying to go stock with her. The software on it just seems rather buggy and unstable.

check a NVflash thread and see if you can do it that way. there are certain requirements needed before one can use it. so thats why im saying look it up.
(thats all i can write right now as my prof just started class)

Aww man, so it's not going to be as simple as just typing a command in?
I'll read over NVflash thread again and maybe I can understand it now. I remember a few months back it was a little over my head.
I have been running hariybean 2.31 for quite some time but saw some kitkat based roms are now available so I thought I would try on out. As a precursor, I had to upgrade my TWRP to the 2.6.3 version that supports KK. I did the upgrade using the terminal emulator method and it seems to have installed correctly but now, when I start recovery, it asks for a password to contiue. If you cancel out of it, then you do not have access to the partitions and I assume they are encrypted.
I cannot find a password listed anywhere, nor did i set one on my machine. I am rooted currently and unlocked. I also tried to downgrade TWRP back to the 2.5.0.0 version but i cant seem to do that either, it seems to instal, but when I go back into recovery, it is still the 2.6.3.0 version.
Can anybody help me? want to either get the password, disable the password (without loosing my data) or downgrade back to a version that will not request a password.
Detailed steps to accomplish any of the above would be greatly appriceiated!

This is all down to a lack of reading mate. What does the disclaimer say in the hairybean thread under the big red writing saying "read everything carefully"

Does he have his nvflash backups? I didn't notice him post that.
He needs to try the following and try to get back on the correct TWRP for that bootloader before downgrading.

I'm going to be honest with you, the reason I was interested is I made the bonehead mistake of not downgrading to 4.1 before attempting to flash the KK twrp. Looks like the link you sent fixed the recovery just fine without needing NVFlash (At least in my case) if only I knew how to actually develop roms better. I want a 4.4.2 Linaro AOSP ROM with ART optimization (Or Vanir) for the Prime on the 4.2 bootloader... that would be pretty awesome.

It really isn't as hard as everyone thinks if you know your way around linux a little bit. Glad you're fixed anyway and bloody read next time

I now have made things even worse by using wipe in TWRP and now the OS is gone I have tried using the fastboot -I 0x0b05 flash recovery twrp.blob as suggested and it says it is writing it, but when it is done, it restarts into the same TWRP 2.6.3.0 version everytime. I have no data on the tablet that isn't already backed up (but I don't have NVflash) so I don't care how deep It needs to be formatted to get it back online again.
Any further suggestions or steps to take? I have ADB and Fastboot access but that seems to be all......

I finally got it back.
Did this list of commands:
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase misc
fastboot erase cache
fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash system c:\adb\blob
fastboot -i 0x0B05 reboot
and that allowed me to overwrite the TWRP 2.6.3.0 and thus unencrypt the storage finally and then I just reinstalled the Harirybean zip again.

I do know a bit around linux, I have been using Ubuntu for about 3 years but not super familiar with things. I know basic commands in terminal and I know how to Google really well haha. Any chance you could PM me a list of starter guides because I really am interested in doing new development for the Prime. I am not getting a tablet anytime soon... due to money concerns and the fact that I just like the transformer series.

I would advise not starting with a rom but starting with an app to get yourself used to using toolchains etc.
Take a look at compiling your own version of Gotham XBMC to get you started, the instructions on that are pretty good and straight forward.

Awesome I will get cracking on that over the weekend. I will see how that treats me and if it goes well I will let you know and see if I could be your padawan learner and hopefully build a vanilla Linaro AOSP Rom for the 4.2 bootloader some day.

I'm now on ParanoidAndroid KitKat Rom via Voyagers TWRP Recovery. I'm curios how KitKat will perform on my TF201 over time.
