I've read that some people are reporting the s4 getting hot in general but has anyone had theirs overheat while charging? Also is there a overheating shut down or anything. I feel asleep with my phone under my pillow charging and woke up and it was turned off but ungodly hot like nothing I've ever felt a phone do. I know under the pillow probably killed the ventilation but in general is anyone else getting crazy overheating while charging?

Yes my S4 also overheats when on charge (only if I'm doing something that's really power consuming). It also tends to lower my screen brightness and I can't do anything about it. it gives me a warning "To avoid overheating maximum screen brightness has been reduced".
I can not wait until there are custom roms made for this, I can't stand anything stock! It's painful

What's the highest core temperature that people are seeing on a Streak 5? I currently have mine set to 998MHz with SetCPU and it's generally ticking at around 83F.
Over the weekend, when it was at 1.2GHz, it was sat in the sun on my car dash running Google Maps, and consistently was crashing. It was only when I took it down to reboot by taking out the battery I realised the thing was red hot. I didn't catch the temperature unfortunately - it was Mother's Day, my wife was mad at me for relying on a failing GPS to find our brunch venue, so didn't have time to investigate. I had to crank up the car A/C and direct the vents directly over the Streak to cool it down. Then it was fine.
Last night I was trying to get Netflix running (see thread on the Android Development forum for a fix to the 'chipmunking') but it wasn't happy, kept crashing. It was getting hot and I noticed the temp was 102F. Battery out and let it cool off and it seemed OK again.
So - my question for all the O/C fans - what's the 'safe' operating temperature max for the Streak?

Apologies - thanks for moving.
I plugged in my to charge my phone at near 25%. I let it charge till 100 and used the battery recalibrate tool. Once I removed the charger the meter went down to 49% ....lost 51% just like that.
Guys please help.
I seem to say this a lot, but we need more information. What ROM you're on, how old your battery is, what kernel you're using, is it a stock or OEM battery, is it an eBay battery of questionable quality, are you using any battery mods, what voltage settings it showed when you reached 100% charge on the charger, are using the stock charging cable with wall charger or a 3rd-party USB cable or charging from a computer or PS3 usb slot, etc etc etc...
With what information we have so far, try bump charging.
I on phillipe97's Juwe's port with bullet kernel. The phone was bought in March 2011, never changed. No battey mods. Not sure of the voltage it showed when it reached 100% Stock wall charger
What is bump charging?
That's really strange. Are you running a gingerbread rom? I know gb roms have a problem with the battery draining after charging to full even with it still plugged in.

Bump charging is charging your phone to 100% with it on, then turning the phone off and charging it again to 100%, then turning it back on and doing the same until it stays full when you unplug it.

Darn it, LazyB! You're too kind! I deliberately didn't explain bump charging because I knew the OP would be too lazy to do a simple Google search, so when he came back to the thread with some badly worded and not particularly useful response that contained, "What is bump charging?" I could say "OMFG Google it you twit!" and then link him to something like
http://justfuckinggoogleit.com/
or maybe
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=bump+charging
But no! You had to be all nice and altruistic and ruin all my fun!

Haha sorry I must admit I've been jumping on the noob threads being overly nice to try to help to get my post count up to 100. I'm only about 10 away. I'm a firm believer in researching and reading, reading, and more reading. I lurked on here for months before posting anything. The info is just so readily available for anyone willing to do a simple search. Sorry to steal your thunder there though.

So, after I get it to stay 100% when I unplug it will I have to keep doing this everytime I charge my phone or will the problem be solved?
Hey guys
On the weekends I'm usually home and I do use my phone quite a bit..but I'm mostly sitting at my computer doing so.
Is it better for me to keep the phone plugged in or should I be letting it drain? I heard that large drain cycles are not good for the battery and will wear it out faster...I've learnt that with my original Samsung battery...I have an extended one, now.
I've searched around...some people say one thing, others say the opposite...so what's the deal, really?
Thanks,
Elliott
The battery is desinged to be drained, you can always use your device plugged in when you are about to run outta juice.

Right...but if I'm going to be texting constantly on the phone...is it better to just leave the phone on charge while I'm using it, or keep draining it/charging it back up?
As I said, use it.
If battery is low, just charge it while you do.

Thanks.
Anyone else have any info on this?

Bump
There was an article on XDA a while ago about the battery in mobile phones.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1168036
Summary:
It doesnt matter if you keep it plugged in or not. It will do no damage to it.
What you shouldn't do with this kind of battery is draining it to 0% like some people suggest. In fact it is better to keep it charged above 40% to maximize the lifetime of your battery.
Here is also an other thread about it.

Thanks for the threads.
The first and 2nd threads you posted through, seem to contradict each other.
The first thread said
Hence constantly recharging a lithium ion battery does not shorten the battery life more than normal usage would. Avoid letting it sit on empty for too long; instead, keep it charged-up if you can.

lol, we gotta get a lithium battery Ph.D here
I never let my battery die on me, I only do it once to get rid of fuel gauge (although some say that it fixs it on it own after three days or so) whenever I flash a new ROM.
I always let it frain to 15 % or something like that.

It doesnt really contradict each other. They warn you about heat that is bad for your battery when charged to 100%. Keeping your phone at 100% in a hot enviroment does more damage then having it at 40% in the same enviroment. The same applies to running an app that keeps your cpu running constantly thus heating up your phone.. But in normal circumstances it shouldnt do harm.
It sounds like someone is obsessed about their battery not being at 100% all the time.
Charging and discharging your battery shortens it's life. This is the way it was designed.
Chill, it's just a phone, not an artificial heart

Well I think they clearly contradict each other...one says to keep your battery charged up, the other says not to keep it at 100%...
I understand about the heat degrading batteries...but that's another discussion completely.
Anyone else have any opinion?

I wouldn't call myself obsessed...I'm just wondering if leaving it plugged in for a good portion of the day will reduce it's life. Because I did that with my original Samsung battery and it's barely usable for me now...just wondering if leaving it plugged in for long periods of time diminished it's life over a year and a half.
I think batteries don't like to be plugged all the time.
For what i've read in the last 4 years nobody knows exactly what's good and what's not for them.
You be the judge.

I've had my S4 for a few days now. For the first few days the battery life has been great, but now it seems to be depleting faster and faster, with "Android System" as the main culprit, usually taking over 70% of the battery used.
Anyone have any ideas as to why this could be? It's overtaking any idle processes and draining the battery even when the phone isn't being used at all.

People seem to have linked high Android System battery use with having certain samsung features enabled usually. Such as the eye tracker, etc. Do you have many of those features turned on?

Q&A for Does GPS make L920 burn?
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for Does GPS make L920 burn?. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!

Actually I use Here Drive also and the battery not only gets hot, but also drains really fast... in fact faster than any charger can charge the phone, so even when it is connected to charger it still drains battery at about 10%~20% per hour. The only cure is to turn off the phone for about 5 min and turn it back on and after a couple of sessions of Here Drive the same thing happens again until you do a cold power cycle again.
I have sent the phone back for service and even complained to Nokia and that did not do anything. In my opinion this seems to be a hardware design flaw with the GPS or the SoC in this phone. I have had this issue ever since I got this phone in Dec 2013. I have the latest available update on it as well.
Battery life is really not a strong point on this phone, and the GPS is not very good at all. Can't rely on the navigation on this phone for a long trip since you will drain your battery, even if it is plugged in to charger.

It gets hot because its running something intensive( data transferring and location pinpointing) it is normal that a car charger cannot charge it fast enough because car chargers as far as i know deliver less power into the phone. And yes mine heats up too.

When you used HEREmap you also can turn "save battery" on or turn on Airplane mode to save battery. And if you plug in car charger? I warranty it will always full
