Galaxy s3 i9300 only charging via usb but not mounting - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Bro's I have a galaxy s3 32gb gt i9300 with stock 4.1.2. When I connect the phone to my laptop via usb (laptop is also Samsung) I hear a beep sound on the cellphone and it begins to charge. However, I see no options and no usb connected 3 pin symbol in the panel of phone and nor is there any other option like mount cellphone etc. I do have latest version of Kies installed on my laptop but even that shows no device connected. Please help guys I have spent a bunch of hrs trying to figure out how to get it going but eventually had to register on this forum for help :silly:

Tried a different cable? Usb uses fewer pins to charge than to connect to a pc. Perhaps the cable is damaged (or usb socket).

Much thanks for the quick reply.... No I don't think the port or the usb is damaged. Further, I'm using the stock usb cable provided with the phone. Any other suggestions?

And yes tried different usb cable, plugged it to different pc's, manually downloaded drivers from Samsung but still the dawn thing doesn't work
Edit: just now tried connecting a different cellphone using s3's usb cable on the same usb port and that works fine. So I guess that confirms both the cable and the port are fine

By port, I meant the one on your s3...
Check its clear. If it is, factory reset. If its still a problem, send for repair

I'm sorry for my quick scan on the thread if I miss something.
Maybe you should try go into recovery and mount USB in there to see what happens or try download mode as well (in this case, with download mode you can see whether USB works or not, if it works then means maybe problem with ROM, so you don't have to send to repair because software issue is not really a issue here, and if it doesn't, then download flash won't start so won't affect on your warranty for flash counts )

I had this problem before with a new brand cable, i just solved the problem buyin a usn charger for Cielo cards.
amazing.

Solved
I tried everything possible....
uninstall drivers. reboot laptop. install drivers. reboot laptop. plug in phone. no sucess.
put phone in download mode and plugged in. no success.
tried on different laptop running Windows 8 and Windows XP. Still no success.
Then i read about this somewhere...
said uninstall drivers. reboot laptop. install drivers. reboot. make sure USB debugging is OFF. Plug in phone. Switch ON USB debugging. Laptop should now detect the phone. But that didnt happen either. No success again.
Also read....
Go to phone dialer.... dial *#7284# to access PhoneUtil > "Qualcomm USB Settings" > set it to "MTP + ADB" .... phone will reboot. Then connect via USB and everything will be ok.
Unfortunately....
dialing *#7284# to access PhoneUtil did not show me Qualcomm USB setting.
It gave me 2 options:
UART> Modem or PDA (here Modem was selected for me by default)
and
USB> Modem or PDA (here Modem was selected for me by default)
I left UART as Modem itself.... but changed USB to PDA. Then click "SAVE and RESET" button.
My phone then rebooted. Once my phone rebooted and i was on lock screen/home screen.... i connected the USB to my phone and voila... my laptop detected my phone as GT-i9300 and show both my SDcard and extCard :good:
Give it a shot and lemme know....

I have same problem. I tried 3 diferent usb cables, two original, 3 computers and nothing. I used MTP few days ago and now nothing in options, just cahrge. I tried factory reset, clean cache, usb debuging on/of, in download mode too... Reinstaled Kies and drivers. I cleaned usb but still nothing. I tried secret code but not have option ADB+MTP. Any help? Sory for my english

Does #*7284# give you the following:
------—-—-------------
UART
-Modem <--- selected by default
-PDA
USB
-modem
-PDA <--- selected by default
???
If under USB, modem is selected by default, then change and select PDA.
Leave UART value to remain as modem itself. No charge here
Or worse comes to worse...
While keeping phone connected to laptop, enable USB debugging and see what happens.

So at the moment your PhoneUtil settings are UART>Modem and USB>PDA right? Leave it at this setting.
Now with the phone connected to you computer... Go to device manager and Uninstall any Samsung drivers that u would see in Device Manager (Windows). If you see anything like adb drivers then also Uninstall. If you have any other phone drivers (Nexus, LG etc), Uninstall those as well. Also from Control Panel>Uninstall a Program, Uninstall any USB drivers programs that u would see in the list.
Once u are certain you have Uninstalled all phone & adb USB drivers. Also Uninstall Kies completely. You might also need to disable Windows auto driver installer. Reboot ur laptop / computer.
Once computer reboots... Google for Samsung USB drivers for mobile phone. The version I used was v1.5.27. You can try with any version. Some people have had the best luck with v1.4.60. Install the drivers and reboot the system again.
Switch off ur phone. And go to download mode.
Then connect ur phone to the computer via USB cable and see what happens? Look in Device Manager again and see what is showing. Also try using a USB 2.0 port for best results.
Once done... Unplug the phone... Get out of download mode.... (u can simply put the battery out of the phone)... Or long press the power button... Let the phone restart. Plug the phone again to the computer and see what happens?

I'm facing same problem..
I have Korean version of S3 SHV-E210S..
Android version 4.1.2
Baseband version I9300ZCLK2
I've installed samsung usb driver, kies, and even adb driver installer..
But it doesn't help me at all..
Then i go to his thread, i tried to dial *#7284#, but nothing happen..
I've put it in download mode too..
And my pc can't detect my phone..
Please help me..
Sorry for my bad english..

Please read post # 12.
These are the only things I can suggest.
If all fails then your only option would be to download "Airdroid" from Play store.
It will not solve your issue but will let you transfer files to your phone at least

[Q] I rooted my GN and now my computer doen't recognize it, any fix?

Hi Folks, I rooted my GN a few days ago with no problem. Now that I want to flash a Recovery to Install a ROM the computer don't recognize the phone. I have tried a few methods that I saw online with no results.
Looking for some help! Thanks in advance!
On a Windows machine go to Start/Control Panel/Windows Update. With the phone plugged directly to the PC, not a hub and click "check for updates". You might have to do this a few times and reboot, I did.
Odds are you tried this, but just in case....
USB Driver Not Being Recognized For SYNC
Following are my observations and possible steps to
5. solution lies in the phone
a. key in the dialer *#7284#
b. it has 4 option there..
UART (MODEM/PDA)
USB (MODEM/PDA)
c. For USB. select the PDA. If it already selected to PDA, reselect it by select MODEM and then PDA again.. Only change the USB setting.. and then press back. try reconnect.
6. The Laptop will start recognizing the required drivers and install them
also Phone is not recognized by laptop when it is in USB debug mode, MyPhoneExplorer does not recognize when it is not in Debug mode

I did notice a Samsung driver available as an optional install in Windows Updates. Is that the one you tried to install?

also check the debugging mode in the developer options

I have uninstalled the older Kies, re installed the latest.
I have installed the lastest odin.
Have tried to link up with and without debugging, odin still does not see phone when in recovery mode.
Only time odin see the phone when phone is in normal mode.
Starting to get annoyed now lol, i cant cut my sim to fit phone, untill this is done
I cant see my s2 on odin either, what am i doing wrong ????
1. Reboot PC
2. Ensure KIES is not running and kill any KIES processes in PC task manager.
3. Download mode
4. Connect USB directly to PC port (no hub)
5. Wait for any drivers to instal or load on PC
6. Start Odin in administrator mode
If still no good;
a) Different USB cable
b) Different PC USB port and wait for drivers

I have another question . I used chainfire Rom to debrand the phone but keis does not recognize . How can I solve this . Could it be because the phone is rooted ?
i am having this problem at the mo, I have tried all of the above, apart from a different pc.
oden worked fine with my galaxy s2
is there any more updates on how to sort this out please?
thanks

I know this is a 7 day old thread, but I feel for you having been in the same situation. Firstly, have you installed the Android SDK? If not then I advise you to do so. Do a search on how to install the SDK. There maybe smaller downloads available with a package of the binaries you need to do some testing i.e. adb. The instructions will elaborate about how to set up your Environment settings in Windows. Essentially ADB needs to be called from within any part of your Windows system....or else you will have to cd to its location each and every time you want to do something like this. So once you have done that, open command prompt and type adb and see what comes up? If it says bad command or file name it means your environment settings for the ASK are incorrect, if it displays the adb help text in command prompt you are ready to proceed.
When you plug your device in (not in DL or recovery modes) is it detected by the PC? If so then your drivers are probably fine. If not then it maybe 1 of 2 things? 1 the device is detected but the MTP drivers have not been loaded or 2. No detection what so ever and all drivers need to be installed.
To determine how to proceed you will need to do a bit of investigating.
Note the USB drivers are included as part of the Android SDK.
Check in Device manager inside of Windows to see if anything is detected when you plug it in. If so but it has a yellow exclamation ! then it would indicate you need to update your drivers (but not always?). From here you can test to see if the phone is detected and you only need MTP drivers.
If not then I would suggest uninstalling Keis all together and downloading and installing the Samsung USB drivers separately. Install the drivers. Plug in the phone. If it is not detected straight away, then reboot the PC then plug the phone into a different USB port. From here you can determine how to proceed by using adb.
plug your phone in via USB and open command prompt and type this: adb devices
You should see 1 of 2 things.
1) The words "list of devices attached" followed by a 16 digit long ID number a gap and the word "device"
2) just the words "list of devices attached" and then blank and nothing else?
If a device ID is returned then you can proceed with the following. Otherwise you need to do some additional trouble shooting
Proceed here:
Once it is detected by Windows and shows up in Explorer then unplug the phone and go into settings and developer options and check enable USB debugging. Once you have done this it should allow your device to be seen in DL and recovery modes.
Troubleshoot: If not detected try the following:
1) Reboot the PC and plug into a new USB port that you have not previously plugged into.
2) Try disabling USB debugging plugging the device in and then unplugging it and reenabling USB debugging
3) From the status bar try switching modes between MTP and PTP modes. Wait a good minute or so between to allow Windows to detect the driver change. Tip a good indication is your notification tray Icon with green USB disk with a magnifying glass swirling around....Note if you cannot see this at all you probably should drag it into the notification panel so that you CAN!
4) Open up device manager again and ensure no yellow exclamation marks !
Once all this is right and you can get List of devices attached followed by an ID number then you can for sure be able to detect your device from Odin. Make sure you are running Odin 3.04, run it as admin (not necessary but have heard that it helps?)
Good luck
James

You can try with minimal/no drivers i.e. uninstall kies if you have it and delete the drivers you might have installed on your own-it sounds counter productive but it has worked for me a few times.
You can also try to either install kies or the drivers separately.
Try the forum for your own phone, the people there might know better about this problem.
Also what OS are you on?

[Q] GT-I9300 showing up as "unknown device" in Win7 x64

OK just bought my GF a GT-I9300, I'm a bit new to samsung I'll admit, but I'm not new to modding... just not sure what I've done wrong, or haven't done yet that is holding me back...
here is what I've done so far:
1. downloaded mskip's multi-tool
2. downloaded Chainfire's CF-AutoRoot
(I know I know, slightly redundant, but I wanted more than one option to accomplish the goal)
3. Installed Samsung Drivers via mskip's tool
4. Set phone to "media device" (seemed the proper option for win7)
5. disconnected phone
6. pulled battery and replaced
7. held home + vol down + pwr
8. connected usb to pc
here is where the issue is, now at this point I get a message in windows that driver installation has failed (I thought they were already installed???) and phone shows up as "unknown device" and I cannot see it in Odin or ADB...
I tried this which I found somewhere:
Code:
try to key in this in dialer
*#7284#
it has 4 option there..
UART
MODEM
PDA
USB
MODEM
PDA
For usb. select the PDA.if it already selected to PDA. reselect it by select MODEM and then PDA again.. Only change the USB setting.. and then press back. try reconnect to kies again..
hope it helps..
but I get an invalid code message after hitting the send/talk button... so without the ability to flash insecure boot img, I cannot attain root... would really appreciate some help, I may not be using proper search terms but I have not come up with much on XDA and as far as google, all I could really find, was the above advice which seems to pertain to the S2, not the S3...
will happily donate to anyone that can help!
Only thing I can think of is you have a rom which doesnt support that dialer code, or your not using samsungs dialer. Works ok here.
I can see:
Uart = modem
Usb = pda
As for unknown driver I dont think I ever installed any driver on win7 x64. Bit hazey but I think I just plugged the usb cable in. Try uninstalling the drivers or kies and retry.
Where did you set media device? Dont remember doing that either.

thanks for your reply, I will attempt uninstalling the drivers and see if that makes a difference, I'll let you know after the GF gets back from shopping... appreciate the reply though!
as for setting as media device, when I plugged it in, there is a notification that says phone connected as "usb XXX" if you tap that, you have three options first option is USB Storage, second is Media Device, and third is an option for systems that don't support MTP...
Hmmm never seen mass storage mode on my phone when I connect via usb. Could be a driver problem.

[Q] Computer wont recognize device.

My computer won't recognize my gs4. I have the latest drivers installed and have re-installed many times. The only thing it does when I plug it in is charge. It sometimes says windows is searching for the latest driver when I plug it in, but it then it then says it was unplugged. ODIN did manage recognize it once and that was enough for me too root it and then flash the stock kernel back on. My phone then soft-bricked at the padlock after some rom flashing and I had to go to my friends house to flash it back to stock. Is there anything else I can do?
Am I the only one with this problem?
Does it give you the error "USB device not recognized"? If so there are some fixes for it. I fixed my friends when I sold him my S3. His PC did it.
Yes, a couple of times it did that. Now it just does nothing.
If you try and remove the device from your device manager does it do anything?
Right click on computer and go to properties to get to the device manager.
What would it be named? I looked through all the usb stuff and everything else and couldn't find anything that would be my device.

It would be any device with a yellow Triangle and an Exclamation point on it. Also uninstall KIES and your Samsung USB drivers, then reboot. Get updated USB drivers from the S4 link in my signature.
It did the same thing and game me the unknown device thing. It also said that the device malfunctioned. I guess ill just try again.

Ok let's try this fix first.
1. Remove phone from PC and shutdown and remove battery to shut off phone.
2. Plug USB cable into PC and phone.
3. Put battery back in and boot phone but…
4. As the phone boots, hold down Volume up and down and don't let go until you see you are in safe mode on the phone. It should say safe mode on the front screen.
5. This should reboot your phone into download mode and install drivers that are needed.
6. Your PC will indicate and recognize the phone.
7. Now if you check the notification drop down on your phone you should see USB/MTP options there in the notification area. MTP should be checked.
Still no luck. Maybe later I will re-install windows or just re install every driver on my computer.
The other fix to try is listed below.
1. Uninstall any previous instance of Kies/USB driver
2. Download the latest Kies, specific to your S3.
3. Download Samsung USB drivers 1.4.6.0 (I've tried newer versions but they all failed)
4. REBOOT
5. Disconnect from internet (VERY IMPORTANT!!! - forcing Windows to install local drivers ONLY)
6. With the phone disconnected, install Kies + USB drivers downloaded in steps 2,3
7. Connect the phone and let Windows install the drivers.
8. Reestablish the internet connection.

My experience with the "Device Malfunctioned" thing was due to a bad cable. It would charge, but wouldn't allow me to connect.
You might also try a different USB port on your computer. Often times the connectors on the back of a desktop system, which are hardwired to the motherboard, work more reliably than the front ones.

Galaxy S3 SHV-E210K can't use USB connection

I just bought an old Galaxy S3 SHV-E210K android 4.4.4. Everything work fine, but I can't connect to my computer through USB port. When I plug in USB port, my phone only charge, have none notifications about USB connection ( same as my PC).
So i tried:
- Hard reset my phone
- Change my cable, USB port, computer ...
- Install, reinstall kies with drivers
- USB debug mode on, off
- Try to use *#7284# and *#0808# but nothing happend. ( for more information I can't use *2767*3855# too)
- Try to root with kingroot, ROMmanager, ... but can't. It seem like my phone block all these apps
- Try to find OEM unlocking but there's no option in developer options
Please help, i read all articles but nothing solve my problems I'm so hopeless
Have you connected the phone to the motherboard usb port and then installed kies then stopped the kies processes?. You can also uninstall the kies program while keeping the drivers.

No i havent. After i had installed kies with driver, i pluged in usb port. Nothing happened
Have the phone already connected so it can find it correctly..
If it still isn't detected by the computer, the USB port could be damaged.

Try connecting the phone while it's in download mode.
