[Q] SOFT BRICK - Reset custom binary counter - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I soft bricked my Samsung Galaxy s3 GT-I9300
I don't know how...
I tried flashing cutom roms, stock roms and kernels...nothing works
ODIN says: NAND write start!! Then it fails everytime.
So i'm looking forward to send it back to the service centre as it is supposedly still on warranty. To benefit from the warranty, the custom binary download should be "No".
My phone can still go into download mode, recovery mode is inaccessible.
In download mode it sayS:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-I9300
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: Yes (5 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: Custom
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
Is there any way I can reset the custom binary download to "No" ?
PS: According to some videos on YouTube, USB jigs only get the phone in download mode, it does NOT reset the custom binary download counter.
Please help me, thank you.

My intel i7 has all kinds of usb sockets on it.
I don't even need a motherboard.
CPU is the processor. Computer, pc, these are what have ports. Your phone has a cpu also, is that what you mean?
It is a small point but at the same time big and important as I know many here are translating to get information.
To the OP:
1) Download the CF root for your device. Place it in the PDA section of odin and flash. Read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
2) Enter recovery (volume up + home + power) and wipe things
3) Download and install a CWM compatable .zip rom, I can recommend wanam's roms http://wanamlite.com/category/devices/rom-galaxy-s3/ But I would not start with a leak!
4) When and if you get running update your recovery!
Have been in your situation. I have even lost recovery, old tv style look when I go there. It may be recoverable.
Most custom roms flash through recovery, so if you are trying to flash with odin it will fail.
Try this and let us know how it goes. Also, make it clear how it fails, ie what file went to what program to do what.
Again, most custom roms and kernels cannot be flashed with Odin, that might be the reason you are soft bricked.

Laptop/Computer ports.
Brother, First of all completely uninstall samsung kies and samsung folders from your computer, then reinstall kies. After reinstallation is completed just close kies and start ODIN and flash your cell phone with help of download mode
I faced the same problem and this helped me out, and yes.. your device is not bricked
All the best :good:

Links for Factory Kernals not woking?

Hey guys,
I'm trying to flash the S2 back to UK Factory kernal as I want to take it back for a warranty claim.
I've unrooted the phone so far, but bnow want to restore the phone with a stock/factory kernal, however the links for the factory kernals in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 don't work. I keep getting messages that the files have been removed due to copyright violati ions etc...
Can somebody please help?
Cheers
Try here, if not Samfirmware, if not you'll have to flash an entire stock rom (which is what I'd probably do regardless if I was returning a phone for a warranty claim).
Thanks for the links MistahBungle, but what do you mean by 'flash an entire stock rom'. Is it not sufficient to just flash with a kernal from the links?
How difficult is it to do the entire stock rom? I'd rather be safe than sorry, if flashing the entire stock rom keeps the warranty inatct...
cheers
here you go stock rom ,kernek and modems
I mean, instead of flashing just the kernel, flashing the entire rom package (which also obviously contains the kernel). You don't absolutely have to do this, it's just what I'd do (just my personal preference).
It's no more difficult to flash a whole rom, just the download will take longer as it's a couple of hundred MB Vs a few MB for a kernel.
Do whatever you're comfortable with ;-)

:S connected phone in dowload mode and ran Odin, downloaded firmware file from site that apk_xiz suggested (downloaded one that had XX in the region, as that should be the one for UK?)
Loaded tar.nd5 file in pda on odin and hit start and the the phone just stays in downloading and nothing happens now?? Odin says all hread completed suceed 0 and failed 0?
Can somebody please shed some light
Check Windoze Task Manager & kill Kies/related processes if they're running. If they're not, go thru as many of the following steps as you need to:-
*Must run Odin as administrator in Windoze.
*Try different USB ports; you must be using a 'powered' or mainboard port.
*Try different USB cables (particularly the cable that came with the phone if you're not using it now)
*Try different versions of Odin (search on here/Google)
*Uninstall Kies, reboot, redownload & reinstall it, reboot, try the flash again. Also run Windoze Update.
And if all this fails, try a different PC. And if it doesn't work first go on the 2nd PC, go thru the above steps on that PC.

if that way won't work then i will tell you difficult way (adb way)
Thank you so much guys, think Its going back to stock now, still downloading as I type...
I've noticed though that the bianry counter states 3 downloads :S I take it I need to buy a 'JIG' tool to reset this counter back to '0'?
Or can I just do a factory erase/reset by holding up menu and power then selecting restore/erase option, would that reset the counter too?
Yep, buy a jig on eBay (costs a couple of bucks), provided you're not running the 'new' bootloader, the jig will reset your flash counter.
If you find the jig doesn't work, you have two options; flash the 'old' bootloader, or use Triangle Away to reset the flash counter.
But don't worry about that now, get your phone working, buy a jig (even if it doesn't reset your flash counter, could come in handy if you can't get into download mode someday for whatever reason) & see how it goes.
no you won't have to buy any zig to reset your binary count just root your phone and download triangle away and you are good to go .
enjoy
Okay, phone is working again with stock firmware...
Now, I already had a battery temprature problem with the phone, it didn't restart without plugging in with a charger when you would power it down... But now after restore, it keeps telling me that charging has been paused due to high voltage and the battery icon keeps flashing in the top right corner on the screen?? Should I just leave this one for the warranty then?
Seriously, you've messed with it enough, haven't you ? ;-P Send it in for warranty, add that problem to the list of other stuff you tell them about.

just the 'jig' and i'll throw it back to them I'll update once I hear back.
Thanks for the help dude
As Apk_Xiz, said, you're going to have to use Triangle Away to reset the flash counter if you've flashed an ICS stock firmware. Go to that thread he linked to if that's the case, read the instructions & go for it. But if you've flashed a Gingerbread stock rom, yeah, wait for the jig & reset it then send it off.

Just a bootloop, give this a go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108499
You will lose all data although, nothing on external sd card will be lost.
Also, how did you flash the ROM? If you followed the guide step-by-step, you shouldn't have ended up in a bootloop.
I wiped all partitions and then flashed the zip file.
Is it with a bootloop that you even can't get in to recovery? I'm stuck on samsung logo, not on RR logo

Ah I'm stupid! You need to get into recovery for that thread! You're definitely holding the correct buttons when the phone is fully off (home + power + volume up)?
I think I will give it a go. But the threat says that you should do it from your recovery, or if you are not comfortable with the recovery way you should do it via odin. I can't get in recovery, so maybe I have an other problem..
I'm honestly a little scared of odin.
once I had to do something with odin, but that failed. so I could not get out download mode..

This is taken straight from my rooting guide. It will help you correctly set up Odin:
First off, you need Odin, which is a flashing tool specifically designed for the SGS2: Just type in "Odin 1.85" without quotations into Google and the first result should display "Odin - xdadevelopers - XDA Developers." Click on the link and Odin will download.
Now before going ahead with Odin, download Kies: http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/ ,which is like iTunes for Samsung Devices, the drivers are needed for Odin, but when the drivers have been installed, close Kies, right click on your toolbar at the bottom of your desktop, I'll assume your running Windows 7, and go into Task Manager. Now find anything with Kies running in the Task Manager, right click on them and kill them.
Once you have done this, go to "sammobile.com", sign up and download a stock ROM for the GT-I9100. I'll assume you have the international SGS2, just remove your battery and make sure it isn't the GT-I9100G. Then flash via Odin by connecting your phone, making sure Odin is configured like above, and then putting your phone in download mode, connecting it to your PC and put the file you downloaded in the PDA section and flash.

Yes, if you can't get into Recovery Mode, a new flash is your only saviour. When you have flashed the ROM and hopefully everything went well, you can root your ROM by using Chainfire's CF-Root. Then you could restore a backup.
I have also a zip-file of my previous rom on my sd-card. That was codename lungo. Can I flash that zip so i don't neet to re-root lik you said?

Do you know what it is/does? Also, the guide I took that segment on setting up Odin was actually written for rooting your ROM with CF-Root.
Oh, its a ROM. My bad! Well, I'm not too sure. I think if you have a backup of it, that would be safer. Rooting is real easy anyway.
Is Codename Lungo not a HTC Sensation ROM?
Oke thank you.
I will download the stock firmware from sammobile, and try to flash it with Odin. I just want it to work again (root or no root) and not have to buy a new phone

Don't thank me till it's working! Once new ROM flashed and booted, let me know.
By the way, don't use the .PIT file if one is included in the download, if you get PDA, PHONE and CSC, put in appropriate sections of Odin and flash, if just one file, put in PDA section and flash.

HELP: Flashed ROM (AOKP Milestone2), it freezes and get stucked :(

Hello. This is bothering me. I've tried searching but seems nothing helps.
Here's the scenario: (It was my 2nd attempt to flash)
I was running the touchwiz (but my phone was basically, rooted).. This paste few days, it started to hang and freeze every once in a while. Then i noticed that freezing became frequent. So i decided to flash ROM.
I used this AOKP Milestone2 because they say it is stable http://aokp.co/devices/i9300# and G-apps4.2 - Everything runs smoothly and after the reboot, the homescreen get stucked on the "welcome screen" I wasn't able to hit the "start" button. it's freezing. After a while.. It automatically shuts down.
I tried to re-flash it.
Sometimes, i was able to pass through and open playstore, then it hangs again?! I have to force power-off it to work then it happens again.
NOW..
I restored my Nand back-up (Touchwiz) hoping it'll work at least. but then after reaching the interface.. It was again freezed. T.T
I cannot use my phone now.
I was planning to do the BrickedBug checked but i cannot because i cannot access my phone.
Please, any help or enlightment or same experiences?
Thank you very much in advance! ^_^
No idea what you have flashed its not from XDA suggest you ask that site what's wrong .
But first boot to download mode what does product code say if nothing then you need a new motherboard .
In that respect read the SDS sudden death syndrome sticky and Phone Freezing sticky .

(Now it still freezes hangs and auto-shutdown)
What I will do now is:
3. Flash a kernel compatible with my ROM base on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091045and
]My question is:
1. I am doubtful if the ROM and kernel i have has this SDS fix (I've read the forum on LSmooth and no clear answer) so i decide to flash a Kernel
2. Can I flash a firmware (to fix/prevent the SDS) using Odin? Is it safe or will just ruin my phone more?
3. As what i've read, it says if possible stay away from using download mode? I was just wondering about this bootloader, will I be safe if I just do not flash (if im right) this bootloader w/ fixes? (Since I do not actually use download mode?
I dont intend to be spoonfed, I was just confused. I dont want to brick the phone that'll cause much damage instead of just freezing or SDS.
Thanks

CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
CSB-CONFIG-LSB: 0x30
BOOTLOADER AP SWREV: 3
WRITE PROTECTION: Enable
With the MK2 flash, it shows no errors unless I add the .PIT file I've found here for the I527.
When that's added with "Repartition" checked, it states SECURE CHECK FAIL: PIT
Either way, it accepts the firmware then reboots, as expected with "Recovery Booting" but it hangs there, then either sticks there or begins to boot loop.
Any ideas? Download is always accessible. I've never had a Samsung that was accessible in Download mode but unable to be successfully flashed.

I'm about to give up, finally.
Okay so far I've: re-flashed with AT&T MK2 firmware...
I cannot: find a .pit file the phone will accept.
I cannot yet: establish a jtag connection and I know I'm wiring in right...
The MK2 Firmware flashes with Odin, no problem. This states on the download screen it shows:

Well not really sure but on that pit file it sounds like it is not signed..a knox thing..but while you have the rom installed do a factory reset and clear the dalvik cache and see if that will help.

That's an excellent idea.... If only I could get into recovery. It won't go into it....
I could go ahead and clean it out now, I have my own .PIT extracted from the device BUT I'm missing a lot of the partitions I'd need to accomplish this. ie everything not included in the Odin Flashable .tar.md5 file for MK2 here....
I do appreciate the suggestion though.

Any help is appreciated. KIES won't connect to the device either.
I can flash any firmware I want in Odin but it just won't boot.
I tried using a debrick.img and writting it to the SD card with W32DiskImager but with the SD card in when I turn on the phone it just goes to the same screen as the pic above in recovery mode.

Hi..since you have the i527m mega (Canadian version) by what your pic shows above by flashing this rom ROOT_JDQ39.I527MVLUBNA3.tar by @krazykipa it should get you up and running again and the rom is rooted already, this is the rom i use when this happens to me, just unpack it first to get the .tar file and then flash with odin..and i believe this is a rogers rom which will still work..just remove any rogers stuff if you do not have the same carrier...at least you should be up and running again. :good:
Thanks starmaster10, it's d/l now, I appreciate the help. I'll try flashing it and report how it went

Sweet..that sounds great and you are welcome.

Please help, i9300 possibly bricked

Hi,
I flashes ArchiDroid last night, the rom worked fine and everything was going alright. When I woke up during the middle of the night I noticed the phone was on the samsung logo but didn't think anything of it. This morning the battery was dead and it was still stuck on the samsung logo, it won't boot to recovery but does boot to download mode.
I've just tried flashing i9300 Vodafone OFW (not my carrier, but would it make a difference?) via Odin and get the following error message:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",

The file I'm trying to flash in Odin is the stock i9300 Vodafone UK OFW so yeah, only difference is my phone is not on Vodafone, it's unlocked to all networks but I can't find OFW for that.

Your nand maybe corrupt try all options if they fail then try rescue firmware here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30087735&postcount=6 << only use as a last resort and read instructions carefully.

what other options would you suggest until I declare that as a last resort?
edit: is there anyway I can save my pictures before I continue with this?
also, how do i open the other options in odin?

If stock roms are failing to flash with nand error then their is not much more options to try other than emergency firmware you could try flashing a recovery like PhilZ recovery with odin and see if it will boot into that then try to make a backup. (but I don't hold out much luck with that).
If that fails try rescue firmware in the link I provided but if that fails than it is a service repair.

If you are having problems with odin then try a different version some work better than others. >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...08-2013-odin-3-09-odin-1-85-versions-t2189539 << 1.85 seems to work well for me.
