My only part pave with this phone is that it sometimes stutters. Just slightly, no serious lag. Since I know even the s4 is javing soke slight lag, I am goingbto have to assume it is A. Touchwiz B. The verizon bloat, or C. (Most likely) both. Does anyone jave any tips to try to cut out this slight lag? I mostly just want to know if this is normal. Pretty sure it is, but you can never know. Thanks guys!

I would love to take a crack at this, but I have some questions.
1. What Launcher are you running?
2. What Kernel are you running?
3. What ROM are you running?
4. Do you get any Force Closes?
Completely stock at the moment, just got it a couple of days ago. I an using the touchwiz launcher, but niva slightly lags in the app drawer as well.

I recommend Nova Launcher, its a little faster and gives a stock look. I never run stock, I do not like Bloat and I do not like Carrier IQ.
Been running nova for a while, thought id change it up. Also the carrier bloat sucks, but I actually like touchwiz.

I agree 100%, with these same changes my N2 didn't lag at all even stock.
While I agree that VZ bloat sucks just on general principle (why I run Beans myself), it really does not cause lag.
A properly setup TW ROM runs every bit as smooth as any custom ROM.
I actually already tried those things, but I like my animations, but maybe I'll give it another shot. S o basically it is just the animations? I don't think it is the hardware as it runs games and benchmarks fine, with no over heating issues..

As a former counter strike addict I hear "lag" and think of interped headshots.
But seriously, what do you mean when you say lag? Screen transition lag, app opening lag, web page loading lag?

Launcher pro will speed up the screen transitions. I found the touch wiz screen transitionas pretty slow but the app drawer fast on my GNote as well. Also if you run your finger along the screen dots it flies.

you mean the touch wiz widgets? I was able to load touchwiz wigets on my skyrocket when using launcher pro. I will try on my GNote. I have launcher pro set up but use touch wiz on my GNote.
EDIT: On my skyrocket using launcher pro, I can install any of the touch wiz widgets. Using the Galaxy Note with launcher pro when I try to install the digital clock or accu weather it says "not enough room on this screen" even though there is nothing on the screen. Interesting. Beautiful widgets works fine...
I'm pretty sure the twitter app on the international note does that as well. To me it just seems like people are phishing for instances where the phone lags. This is apparent at least for the mobileburn video, especially when he was in the browser. I don't believe it to be that concerning, personally. While its important to take note of these things, I say sit back, relax, and enjoy the experience.

He actually didn't find lag in any of the phones basic operation which is what would be optimized. He only found lag in a few specific apps. Making the culprit a software issue for those apps and not a hardware problem necessarily. I know for sure on all the android devices I have the twitter apps lags bad. So as far as I'm concerned there is no noticible lag anywhere. The browser functions were smooth as ever, except for the tab switching which iirc happens on the Int. Note as well.

It's the same with every other Android. Live wallpapers WILL slow the phone down slightly.
Every hands on review of it shows that it's incredibly smooth. Just wait for the custom ROMs to be out

dont worry about lag.i have international version.only time u will see lag is when u wake the device.its because,on the note cpu runs at 200mhz while the note is sleep and does not kick at higher cpu clock unless u launch a app.most of time cpu stays at 200 even scrolling thru touchwiz and app drawer making battery last almost two days.just think of a device running 400mhz with touchwiz.it will be slow as ****.but galaxy note runs pretty good even at lowest cpu clock.you will never see a lag browsing web or playing games.

I am not a gamer but from my experience with my GNote and what I have seen in the videos, they are comparable. I think mintu123 was saying that even with the international GNote, you will see come lag when scrolling between screens and the app drawer because the CPU is not running hard and kicks up the speed when you need the processor for apps etc.
I'm not terribly bothered it only has small but noticeable kicks of lag. But wtvr. I love this beast.

Yeah, I was going to say the same as some others. I have an sgs2 and its lag free in all the menus, swiping screens and such. In fairness I'm long gone from the stock rom and this makes it in that way an unfair comparison to the stock iphone 4. I would add that I have seen some lag here an there on the iphone and I wonder about it when I see people say its lag free. I would have no quibble with saying its smoother than most android handsets but lag free I cant really agree with.

Don't believe anything you hear about a "buttery smooth" Android device. They all lag. The SGS3 lags horrendously and the stock ROM is actually slower than an SGS2. The overall frame rate is MUCH lower everywhere. The SGS3 completes operations faster, but the frame rate of any action is low and it looks choppy and stutters. CM9 on an SGS2 is far superior in this regard.
Go to a showroom and use all the latest Android devices one by one and then finally use the iPhone 4S. You'll walk away laughing at the laggy Android devices and at how they continue to fail at this simple UI principle for years in a row. Of course, you should still buy the SGS3 over the 4S.

On a personally optimized device, the best you will be able to achieve is bringing the frame rate up to 60 such that the animation appears fluid. However it still wont scroll properly. As you drag your finger up and down it will random jump back and forth by a few pixels and teleport around or suddenly fly to the top or bottom of the list at warp speed.

I have had the sgs3 now for a week and I hate it, the lag in opening the system apps is shocking, and so.is the lag in opening them, mind you this phone is stock, the only thing I have done to it is root it. I had an xperia s before this, I had gingerbread on it. It had no lag whatsoever, only.a bit on facebook. To be honest this phone is very dissapointing. Gonna get rid of it.
I just got the Note 2 a few weeks and so far it's my favorite phone I've ever owned. I love the big screen, I use the S pen all the time and the battery is tremendous.
One thing that I'm not quite fond of is the screen brightness, specially when using Netflix.
I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this with Netflix but the brightness on the phone seems to be OK but as soon as I start playing something on Netflix it's really dim. I have the brightness turned all the way up and it still looks really dim.
The quality also isn't great either, it's like it's not playing in HD or something. I've tried connecting to 4G and Wi-Fi and it still doesn't always look so great.
Wondering if there anyone knows of a solution or a hack or something?
I watch a lot of Netflix on my phone and would love to solve this.
I am rooted and I'm using JellyBeans 21 ROM.
Thanks.
Try going back to stock ROM and check if the issue persists.
I noticed that beans rom has reduced brightness overall (cannot say for sure but that was what I felt comparing against stock)

Have you adjusted your quality levels on netflix.com yet? If your not worried about data or use wifi alot crank up quality settings on the site. Then reboot and fire flix back up. As the video buffers during play quality will slowly increase. Depending on your connection it should play pretty decent quality a minute or so into the video. And if you use mx player for your video files make sure you have mx brightness turned up. Im pretty sure mx settings are independent of system. Im also running 21 but I always use beans stock kernel. And even on the puter or xbox netflix Never truly hits HD.

If you do just remember one thing.
The AMOLED screen in our phones gets burn in if your not careful. the brighter the screen the quicker the burn in, at least thats what ive been told.
I have not seen any burn in on my phone, but I know people who are always at max brightness and you can see their status bar even in full screen apps because its burnt in...
None of these tips are revolutionary, but they do work. Here's some things I did to eliminate lag.
1. Installed clean rom (optional, but c'mon, just do it)
2. Installed Nova launcher
3. In Nova settings go to look & feel > scroll speed > choose stock.
4. In Nova settings go to look & feel > animation speed > choose stock
5. In phone settings go to lock screen. Change unlock animation to dewdrop.
Phone is buttery smooth now. Changing the Nova scroll and animation to stock made the most difference. And dewdrop has the least amount of lag of all the other animations. These steps seem simple, but they made a big difference for me.
That's all bull sh!t. I shouldn't have to do all that also installing clean rom isn't an option for me because I'm on tmobile and I will lose the ability to use wifi calling.
I just exchange my first G2 cause of the lag issues I was having with it. If this second unit lags the same, then unfortunately I need to exchange it for a different phone and I'll eat the cost of the restocking fee.

I think we all know that and maybe if development picks up for this phone, then maybe the lag issue will be a thing of the past. But I unfortunately just don't think this phone will be popular enough to warrant a development community.
Unfortunately I upgraded from the HTC One and that phone was so buttery smooth compared to the G2. I have some regrets on ebaying it off
I wanted screen size and battery life which is the only reason why I sold the HTC One.

Like the optimus, I think we're going to see quite a boost in development for this phone. It's already rooted and has insane specs plus nexus 5 will be similar to it.
That equates to Dev support in my opinion.

And that's with animations and the clock/weather widget. I deleted everything from the other home screens, though.
Hey guys so I just upgraded to the s4 and for some reason it seems laggy and slow . Now I did install safe strap root and flashed hyper and jelly but there was a lag feeling to it compared to my note 2. Titanium takes longer to restore same number if apps and even adding a gmail account its has some lag. So I went back to stock rooted to try this. Anyone else have this happen? Using Safe strap ?

Nope. I was lucky to have an MDK build.

I thought the s4 would be faster than n2.

This phone is smoking for me, even under clocked. I'm mdk. My wife is me7 it's smoking too not rooted. Mine is a little faster though. debloating makes a difference I guess.

Can you do a benchmark? Atut or whatever ?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
I did antutu the first custom test near top of page. I got 27841 as a score. Maybe I should unroot and do a full system restore?
Wonder if 4.3 will be boot loader unlocked

I have gotten as high as 29000 something or other without overclocking the CPU. I think I was on Hyperdrive. I'd think vanir would smoke. That is one fast rom. Just did a run of that benchmark on eclipse 2.0. I have very modified kernel settings. Aimed @ a mix of battery and performance and scored 26500. Underclocked CPU.

Maybe having to use the module kernel since I'm me 7 doesn't let me get good battery or performance ?

Officially? No, it'll be locked down like any other release. After that? Who knows, we'll just have to wait to see if someone will be able to do it.
What kind of lag are you experiencing exactly? Mine used to stutter a lot more than it does now... here's what I did to fix mine:
1) Freeze/uninstall all bloat of course
2) In Dev options change all window animations to .5 (or off if you want)
3) Turn off Lock Screen animations (water drop/light effect) <--- this made the biggest difference oddly
4) Install Nova launcher and don't use too many home screen widgets
5) (Optional) I use a program called Clean Master which will clean up junk files and cache for you
My S4 still isn't completely lag free, it does still stutter from time to time during heavy multitasking but I think that's just the nature of a heavy skin like Touchwiz running in the background. Unfortunately I have ME7 so comparing it to AOSP is out of the question right now (I don't really want to run Safe Strap at the moment).
There are also other things I haven't tried like Greenify-ing apps and whatnot, but for now I'm happy with how it's acting.
Opening apps up and unlocking phone was laggu for me. I'll try what you suggested. I'm hoping I can either trade my phone for a mdk version or 4.3 becomes unlockable

I'm not sure. I doubt it. I have been hopeful that a dev is sitting on an exploit waiting until the 4.3 update to release it so there is not a opportunity to patch it. But as far as I know right now there is no exploit for the me7 boot loader and no prospects on the horizon.

For some reason my android system is 69% . is there a quick fix for that ? Not sure why it went so high. Even more then screen time

Usually that is related to WiFi location being checked in location settings. Uncheck it and the usage will go down.

OK this is weird. So I have juice defender and freenift installed. Now I what's happening is I'm using the phone and say it drops 5% in zxx minutes. I when I come back a hour later its only 3% down. Its like IRS charging itself lol. Does this mean its not calibrated properly and is not reading it correctly there for maybe its giving false information ?

My wife and I both have MDK phones. They both lag. TW is a fat bloated pig with poor performance. It's a shame, I was really happy with the S3 and the S4 is just such a let down in so many ways.

My wife has a S3 and I also had one before I upgraded to the S4. Initially this phone felt slower to me too but after rooting and installing a stock debloated rom it seems plenty fast. I rarely notice any lag at all....maybe after about 10 days without rebooting. My wifes S3 is SLOW as heck now which is really strange. I tried factory resetting it and last weekend flashed it in Odin...still slow.....her phone is insanely slow compared to mine.

Yeah, maybe my expectations were too high. I was running bonestock and it was the smoothest experience I had. But, the occasional home button lag, super slow dialer, and choppy performance during some game play and scrolling made the overall experience disappointing.

I know it's fun to bash Touchwiz but I think a lot of lag issues still hide under Android itself... I'm hoping to see good results with the TRIM feature in 4.4 (not sure if it's in 4.3?) to totally get rid of lag across all Androids.
I completely agree with you though, Touchwiz is bloated and heavy and I prefer stock Android over all others.
