S3 periodically freezing, requires reboot - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, any help would be appreciated!
My galaxy s3, on 4.1.2, has been periodically freezing, and then the only way to get it working again is to either take the battery out or hold down the standby button and restart it that way.
It started about 4 or 5 days ago, freezes whether on battery or charging. Sometimes it freezes multiple times in 15 minutes, sometimes it lasts 30-40 mins before freezing.
It was unrooted when the problem started, since rooted to see if that helped but no luck.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Root cannot help and it invalidates warranty .
First step is to backup data and factory reset .
jje

Yes, factory reset and select another kernel that will accept more multitasking

Didn't you try to flash XXEMB1 firmware with Odin? If so let's try to do it, because I've heard that Samsung fixed freeze issues with this firmware.
And also I flashed XXEMB1 firmware and I have no more freezes, so my advice would by to flash this firmware to all people who have freeze issues.:good:

What do you mean by selecting another kernel?

Must be root / loss guarantees though? / Renew it, always a Nandroid backup EFS folder!!
After the flash root kernel, there are plenty on xda

Stock rom rooted freezes A LOT!

Hey guys I've been experiencing random freezes on my phone mainly while connected to the internet, the phone freezes and completely stops working, I can hit the home button infinite times that nothing happens, I can lock the screen but they I can not do anything, so I then have to press the power and lock key until it reboots! This has happened to me 4 times just today two times using the browser, 1 time using Opera Mini and 1 time on the XDA app!
I have searched but what I found is people with the issue, no answers!
I'm running the stock UK firmware flashed through odin the XXALE8, with the latest LH1 modem flashed through CMW, and rooted with the S3 toolkit method! Just that, have had the phone for 7 days and this started happening 2 days ago and the phone has been rooted since the second day.
Anyone knows what this is related to? If removing root will help and if I should change the modem to another one (which one?)
Flash the XXBLG8 firmware via Odin.
I've never experienced that problem but it wouldn't hurt to be on the latest firmware.

Thanks for your reply! So the XXBLG8 is the latest one? If it is then I will download it right away! Oh and would it still be good to flash the LH1 modem? Or should I stay with the one it comes with?
Yes it's the latest UK one, there is LG9 but that's the same except it's for Asia.
The LH1 modem is the latest for the UK also so use that one.

Thanks again, I'll do that and let you know! And as an update, in te afternoon I wiped cache, and dalvik just to see if it would do anything but without success! And about an hour ago I found out that the freezes would occur whenever I enable the syncing! And I had to reboot it 4 times until I could disable the syncing, I don't know what this means, but it might be helpful!
A friend of mine has the same problem, and in fact, has already returned on S3 due to the same 'glitch,' as Verizon referred to it. I'm trying to get into TW to wipe that cache, but don't have time before the lockup. I disabled syncing, but that hasn't helped.
I'm trying now to connect to Kies to at least back up the contacts before a reset. No luck there either.

S3 crashed after rooting

First off, hello to everyone.
I tried to root my S3 and messed it up. Now when I start my mobile, the samsung logo appears and nothing else.
Can anyone please help me sort this out? Maybe a way to flash or reset it?
Have been trying for a week now and getting nowhere.
Any help would be very appreciated.
Thank you.
If you can get to recovery, wipe cache and dalvik cache & reboot.
If you want to start again then reflash stock rom with ODIN. Then flash cf-root ver. 6.4 with ODIN. You now have stock, rooted rom....

Thanks it worked. Still getting cell standy issue.
Don't worry about cell standby issue. Is just an error in reading actual usage.

Cell standby issue is just because Samsung made a mistake in the way the stats are reported in the battery stats.
It thinks the draw is 35ma when in fact it is actually 3.5ma, it has no effect on the actual drain, just how its reported.
Also poor signal will increase cell standby battery drain.

I have similar problem with my s3. It keeps crashing after rooting. I have unrooted my phone in order to fix that out but no luck so far.
First I did use an Odin to download original android system onto my phone. When that didn't work, I used Kies and Emergency Firmware Recovery, unfortunately with no positive result.. Phone seems to be working quite fine until unexpected rebooting happens. On and on at least 20 times a day! That really pissing me off bcoz it happens in the middle of important chats or calls
Is it possible that I did something wrong while rooting and i've damaged my phone? Is there any way to figure out what had happened to my s3? perhaps so kind of diagnostic tools?
Your input would be greatly appreciated

"Process android.process.media has stopped" after JB update

Hey guys, I can't even use my phone after the official update of the Jelly Bean (via Kies). After booting, the phone freeze almost completely and pop-up this message. Any fix without reseting ? I tried cleaning the cache but the problem isn't fixed
If anybody had this issue, can give me an idea about how to fix it ? Thanks
Try clearing its data in app manager
Nop, can't find it. I tried cleaning most of data but nothing works :/ Damn...is Samsung able to do something without bugs ?
that's why no one uses kies
Factory reset or download an Odin version and flash with Odin

Yeah, I like to root, but not to change the rom Now I need to root again. At least the issues has been solved.
Fixing permissions usually solves that problem barring that a full wipe and start again.

As I got the official update, I lost the root, I tried to clear the cache and as I've seen that is not working and the phone was freezing each 5 seconds I got a bit scared to start rooting it. I wiped it, installed my apps and now everything is ok. However, it's weird that I didn't got the apps automatically installed like it's happened last time when Amazon replaced my S3 for some screen issues (some scratches inside the screen). I just added my google account and everything started installing automatically. Not this time...
just downloaded jelly bean tonight and having this issue. has anyone come up with a solution that does not involve a full hardware restart???
Had same problem after I updated 3 months ago. I think was an incompatibility with an app or something has not updated completely. Fixed it with factory reset.
You can backup apps with Samsung Kies I think if you don't want to lose progress in games, the other stuff is automatically synced

I'm afraid it'll probably have to be a full reset just make sure you've backed up.

[Q] Hard brick Samsung Galaxy SII

Hi, i'm a new user of SG SII, and i don't know much about it. I was trying to install new ROM on it, first I tried to unroot my phone with CF ROOT, after that everthing was OK. Then i tried to install REVOLT JB i9100 ver 2.8.2, when i got by CWM in recovery, instead of clicking wipe data, then cache and ccache partition i did: wipe data/factory reset, and wipe cache partition, wipe dalwik cache and format system. I flashed kernel and during ROM installation phone turned off and did turn on. i think it's hard bricked. I don't know what to do, please help.
Are you still able to get into don't download mode o your phone ? ( volume down, home key, power button )
If so, reflash your kernel and go from there.
Also have a look at CyanogenMod, they have a good post with instructions on here.

no, phone doesn.t response on anything, even if i'm charging the battery.
Try removing your battery and unplug cables.
Then try download or recovery mode again.
If it really doesnt work then there is probably something fried on your system board, doubt anything you can do about it as i had the same not that long ago out of the blue.

ok, i'll try to do it. but i have to ask if that will not work, can i save my phone by changing main board on warranty in service?
You can always tell them that you were updating via kies and it dropped dead just like that.
Your battery was low when you tried to flash it, wasn't it?
try a jig first tho; there's something fishy about those wipes you mentioned.

On some occasions flashing a device can use 40-50% of battery to prep and flash device which is why its advised to never flash your phone unless you have at least 50-60% battery.
If power cuts out during flashing procedure it can damage nand/ic chip, corrupt bootloader, corrupt sdcards etc.
After leaving it plugged into to charger overnight try a USB jig to see if you can get it to wake up in download mode, If you can re-flash rom and go from there.

pray for the jig.
From what you described, it couldn't have hard bricked your phone. In fact, it isn't easy to hard brick our phone unless you install that infamous ICS 4.0.4 leaked ROM or mess with flashing of PIT file. Try to use another fully charged battery to boot up or go into CWM recovery.

while i was installing new rom, process was like 0% for about 5 minutes, and then phone just turned off. When i did flashing and installing CWM everything was ok. I rooted it with CF root.
Exact same problem here. Followed the root guide to the letter and all OK. Set omega rom installing and it stayed at 0 for five mins then it shut off. Now no life at all.
Gonna build a jig tomorrow so I'll update here if it works.
Really hope so as it's a mates phone.
I've done my s3, s1 and the Mrs s2 without it going wrong so I'm not sure how it went wrong this time.

Your phone have got super brick, and the JIG nothing to do.... You must go to service.
The reason for this is stock kernel who has kode cause brick.
Sorry for my english!
Ah that's a shame. Fingers crossed it's still under warranty or it's gonna be an expensive month.

[Q] [HELP] phone randomly freezes - LiquidSmooth 2.37

Hello!
I've been on LiquidSmooth v2.37 for the last 3 months and with great pleasure. After flashing the ROM back in Nov 2013 I experienced few random phone hangs which I initially ignored => long press of power button and problem solved. These hangs became more frequent in Dec 2013 so I tried a cache wipe and also a factory reset with little success: the phone hangs frequency decreased but not disappeared. Presently I get this problem from 1 to 3-5 times per day, which starts to be annoying.
- Never modified the ROM. 100% LiquidSmooth official and original
- The phone does not completely freeze: screen and buttons become unresponsive however the status led still blinks. Moreover if I try to call the i9300 I can hear the call tones through the other phone, however no sound / vibration is produced by the i9300.
- Hangs happen mostly when I'm using apps but I could not find a pattern so they look random to me
Before i was on ParanoidAndroid and I have never experienced such issue.
Any suggestion? I don't wanna leave this ROM since it's really really good for me.
Thanks for your help!
Wipe and flash stock rom, if still freezing then you have bad memory blocks -read the freezing thread in general forum.

Is there another way to test memory health rather than flashing the stock firmware? Maybe a benchmark app or something?
Where can I find the latest stock firmware and the guide to flash it?

can I pick any stock firmware for GT-I9300 or should I select the firmware based on phone current FW/baseband/recovery installed?
Use the latest full stock issued for your country, flash with odin and factory reset.
