Huge problem with the LTE-Version (no exFAT) - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I have encountered a huge problem considering the 16GB LTE-version of the Xperia Tablet Z: it does NOT, I repeat, NOT support exFAT (unlike the Wifi-only version). Since NTFS isn't supported there is no way (except root) to get files on it which are larger than 4 gigs. Sony must have ****ed that up and the result is really horrible IMO. I am returning the device today and will probably buy the 16 gig WiFi version as soon as it is available.
Just wanted to let you know since it sure was a dealbreaker for me. I will probably go for the Wifi-only version now.

How do you know that the wifi only version will support it?

How do you know that the LTE version doesn't support exFAT, but the WiFi version does?

Also, you're cross posting this, which is a no-no. Just saying

Sorry for that.
I have that information from a German Android Forum and it was confirmed by multiple users there. Considering the fact that the LTE version doesn't support exFAT, I have found that out myself.

You may be right. Does the LTE version support 64GB microsd cards? I remember reading in some technical spec on the Sony website that the LTE supports up to 32GB, while the wifi version supports up to 64GB. This may be related to the one accepting exFAT and the other (LTE) not.

I'm afraid I couldn't test that because I only had a 32GB Micro SD card, a 2GB Micro SD card and some USB sticks to test it.
Btw, the tablet also failed to even recognise 2 of my 2,5" external harddrives (640GB and 1TB) by Samsung because they probably needed more power the micro USB port could give. What I don't know if that's also a problem only with the LTE-version or if my specific harddrive models just need more power than others. In another German Forum I read that some users had no problems mounting external 2,5" harddrives but others had the same problem as me.

I doubt any tablet would support hard drives. USB-OTG is designed for thumbdrives and such which don't require a lot of power.

The Nexus 7, the Acer Aconia 700 do support hard drives via OTG (http://goo.gl/qVaIe). And multiple users claim the XTZ does too, but there seem to be exceptions (e.g. me), which most probably depends on the certain model of the hard drive.

I forgot to mention that what I said was true if you plugged only the hard drive to the tablet with no external power. If you have external power, it should be fine, assuming file formats etc aren't an issue.

Yes it supports the SanDisk 64GB SDXC card but the card is formatted as FAT32. So you can't use files >4GB
Please check it.

That I presume is true as i dont have file larger than 4 gigs in my card. I tried usb OTG didnt work (well it was ntfs in my usb so it could be that)

Can anyone confirm that at least the wifi only version supports exfat. I have read that only the Japanese edition does...

I have heard several people confirming that exFAT does work on the Wifi only version in a German forum. I will get my Wifi only XTZ today and it will be the first thing I'll try. I'll keep you posted.

Answer from Sony Support
Hey everyone: I finally got an answer from the Sony Support today, the news are quite good.
Here is the original mail in German:
Guten Tag, Herr XY,

So I guess users of the LTE-version should look out for updates in the next weeks (? I hope...) and make sure to check if exFAT is finally working afterwards!

Thanks for following up! Much appreciated. Why Sony did not allow large files to be played off the card on the LTE version is beyond me, kinda defeat the purpose of the HD wide screen, but at least we know which one to get now...

Largest mini/micro card size?

Anyone know the largest mini/micro size you can get? I want to see if I can order something on Amazon right away....
I get confused with all the different type sizes and types. Like mini and micro are very similar and size, but they both are still made.

micro 32GB from what I understand is the largest the Prime will support.
Don't buy a mini it is a bigger card and doesn't fit.
Micro sdxc cards work as well. I'm using this right now:

These work in every Android device I've tried them in providing they are formatting to Fat32 - get my Prime today and be interested to see whether it can take mine with different formatting standards (please! no 4GB file limitation would be nice...).
FWIW I've used mine in the following devices: Galaxy S (Froyo), Galaxy S II (GB, stock), original Transformer, Motorola Razr, Galaxy Note. They've confirmed in many other devices too, which makes me think it'll work in basically all of them.

ROM/Kernel with NTFS or EXFAT Support?

I have a 64 gb microsd card for media. Diceplayer plays HD files beautifully on my evo3D across HDMI. The one setback is that FAT32 limits files to a 4GB limit.
Under any of the existing ROM's - is it possible to have our memory card formatted NTFS or EXFAT and have everything work?
I know it's possible in general - because many tablets have that capability. My cheap Arm8 based tablet (Ainol Novo7 Advanced) can handle NTFS or EXFAT formats for both the memory card, or USB host.
Is it possible for the Evo3D to handle these formats, now or in the future?
Since when E3D supports SDXC standard?

Exactly. It's a little tricky - because at first the phone reports the card as damaged. Which lead me to believe it would be incompatible. But with a little persistence, the phone will format the card fat32 (it arrives exfat).
Since then, I've been happily using the card for 2 weeks with no issues. I reported more detail in the accessory forum - but the write speed wasn't quite up to class 6 for mine, I measured around 5.5 megs/sec. But others have reported very high read speeds instead.
I did a quick search and it seems NTSF or exFAT support exists in Honeycomb (Android 3.X). I'm pretty sure that is cannot be done in Gingerbread or less (Android 2.3 or less). Maybe since ICS is a merge of Honeycomb and Gingerbread, the ICS Kernel supports this. Try out a ICS rom with the card formatted NTSF and see if it works.

Actually - your information is mistaken. My Ainol Novo 7 Android tablet runs Gingerbread. Right now - it's memory card is formatted exfat, and I regularly use an NTFS drive via usb host.

I cannot find any evidence of an Android phone with ntfs support. Android 3.x kernel can do it and some Chinese tablets with gingerbread can as you have said. The Chinese tabs can due to the developers inserting some binaries into their kernel. However, I've not seen any example of this working for an Android phone. I did see that there may be a connection to USB host and ntfs support. Maybe try a kernel that has USB host active like Goodman's and see if it works.

I'd be happy to try it (probably this weekend) but I've read that not everyone has been able to get USB host to work even with the ideal ROM and Kernel. Do you have a link to the right ROM and Kernel I should try?
my kernel supports NTFS, and will see a NTFS 1TB usb drive...
..............this did require rom support as well...

Prove me I'm wrong.
I've been utterly unable to get this to work. Last night I flashed Olympus ROM - with the kernel it came with. I couldn't get USB host to work, and formatting the memory card anything but fat32 did not work.
Tonight - I flashed Chad Goodman's kernel, and it didn't work either for usb host, exfat or ntfs support.
Oh well - I'll keep trying. If anyone can tell me what the best ROM/kernel combination for trying this is - I'd really appreciate it.
Well - after a couple of days of flashing, I can't get USB host to work at all, nor alternate formats from a microSD card.
Though I guess it's possible that my coming from hboot1.5 is a factor, it seems my hardware revision might be a factor? I've seen one other person report a lack of success with a hardware rev of 0002.
Besides that - I'm a little surprised that my NTFS microsd card wasn't supported, seeing as how chad.goodman's kernel is supposed to enable that. Perhaps it only works via USB.
What would posses anyone to want NTFS on Android???
NTFS is really not the best option in FS out there, EXT security and file handling kicks NTFS 10 to 1 any day. Trust me, placing NTFS on a Linux system will make your system slower and full of issues because of the backward compatibility processing.

It's about handling files larger than 4gb, which you can do with NTFS.
NTFS wasn't meant for Flash memories. exFat was.

Exactly, our Evo 3D is capable of playing 1080P files - but most HD movie files are above 4GB.
I realize EXFAT would be superior - but that's not compatible either right now. That's disappointing because like I'd mentioned - my cheap Chinese tablet handles both formats with gingerbread.
I only tried NTFS because Chad.Goodman reported it as compatible on this thread.

There is NTFS support. The problem is 4TB is bigger than 500GB. Nothing to do with NTFS. No format goes over this size on S3. Maximum 500GB (or something similarly small). Certainly not 1TB

[Q] Question regarding XTZ

Hello everyone,
I wanted to get your oppinion on buying a version of the XTZ because I can't decide.
By now I am thinking between the 32GB only version and the 16GB LTE version. I know the price difference so that's precisely why I want to make the best choice.
I still have a question to which I didn't find the answer ...
- does the XTZ read information from external USB 3.0 HDD's or there is a limitation of Android or of the tablet version?
I have two external 1 GB WD that i want to use ...
To surf the internet I don't mind making a hotspot with the smartphone.
Please advise.

It really depends if the XTZ will read external hard drives, USB 3.0 itself shouldn't be a problem.
1) How is the hard drive formatted?
Is it FAT32 or exFAT (Wifi version only) you're good to go. NTFS won't work.
2) Does it have external power support?
If not, it really depends if the XTZ USB port via OTG can provide enough power to run the hard drive. I have tested 2 hard drives so far (without any external power support) and the XTZ couldn't run either of them. But I have heard from several users that they actually made certain external hard drives work via OTG. It is really kind of a gamble if the XTZ can make your hard drives work and I wouldn't rely on it, there is no oother way around it to just test it out but I'd say the odds aren't great.
If it has external power support it should be no problem as long as the format is okay (check 1)).

Thank you very much. I checked and my two External HDD's can be formated to exFAT in Win8.
The only problem (and quite a big one actually) is represented by the power provided through la USB port on the XTZ.
I saw on the thread that you started that a few users in Germany managed to power a few External HDD's without external power support.
Can you please ask what kind of HDD's thay used? Make and model pls?

I bought this on an impulse and haven't used it recently. I think it only has one full size usb so you probably couldn't connect the hard drive and the phone at same time, although the card reader may work while wired to phone. It creates its own network or Hotspot so more than one device can see it, it can also be connected to wifi and will pass-through that signal.
It seems that if hdd doesnt work i need to search alternative storage expansion...using hdd with an adapter is a hassle cause need to carry more stuff...i need to be able to bring it to me all the time...128gb sd card is a little expensive to me now...but maybe later will switch to it...but now i will use this 64gb flash drive dual otg i found...small capacity but easy to use..it will do for now.....
Thanks for all the expert opinion...

Do you already have the hard drive? I was assuming you did, if not there are wireless ones with the function of that Kingston device. Seagate has this one for example, comes in three storage sizes, is rechargeable and creates its own wifi network.

I'm not sure but a ssd may work (as might some of the very low power laptop ones)

Does the Z Ultra have pin out power?
I used a "y" usb cable so one end goes to the usb drive and the other one to a power adapter.
Drive it's not power hungry at all but it's needed the y cable for me.
