Possible to root without PC? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi is possible to root the galaxy s2 i9100 without a PC.
My friend's usb charging port is stuffed, so yeah...
Thanks!

Flash a kernel with stock recovery (if you have 4.0.4 don't make a wipe or format!!!)
Send from my SGS2 I9100 with HassanROM and latest DorimanX 8.xx kernel

I wouldn't be messing with my phone at all unless I had the option to Odin flash. There are situations where that's your only option (other than paying a service centre to fix it). Forking out a few bucks for a new USB controller is the smart thing to do.

Yeah....i'm kinda wary too, especially since its not my phone...
Update: he is currently on 4.1.2 stock & wants to flash pacman rom.
Could someone list the basic steps to follow & relevant links, i don't want to stuff this up
Edit: is there a video tutorial on how to replace the usb controller?

I don't have links because I've never done it, but there are threads on here (recently; detailed ones) specifying which part you need for which I9100 variant, Google/YouTube should yield you instructions on how (I'm told it's very easy to do).
Edit - To narrow it down a bit, search KeithRoss39's posts, he's posted about this issue/parts you need/etc more than a few times recently & knows his stuff.

Cheers, I've found the posts, very useful, will probably do this.

No probs GL.

Any problems.... Feel free to PM me....
Edit....MistahBungle gives sound advice.....better to spend pocket change on replacing the board than risk a sizeable bill at a service centre.....

Listen to Mistahbungles advice. If a flash goes wrong, you can end up with no boot, and no recovery, and in your case,no way of the pc recognizing your phone.
Ive had a modem flash doing that to me,but was easy to fix since my phone connected to my laptop.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S II ROOTED & BRICKED

Hey guys.. I just bought my new SGSII a week ago and I wanted to root it. I follow a guide on google and it went perfectly. Then I wanted to try a custom rom and found lite' and dark ROM... And I picked the dark ROM, so I found a guide on your site, for the 10.2 final edition and I did everything it said. I was starting to install, and I was waiting 15 mins and nothing happend. So as stupid as I am, I take the USB stick out and take the battery out too..
After that it wont turn ON. It wont do NOHTING, no download mode, no repair mode.. Its been a couple of hours now and I cant find any answer on google so I wanted to post my problem here so you could have a new case to crack ..
The wierd thing is my phone is warm, and even more warm then when I played on it.. But it wont function at all..
Please, I am very happy to recieve ANY answer
Please provide a link to the exact rom that you attempted to install.

Look for the posts on the 301k Jig. I don't have the exact link but they're around somewhere on the SGS2 forum.
Its basically a microUSB with a 301k ohm resistor soldered onto it. If you have access to a soldering iron you can buid one in 10 minutes with the online schematics and basic knowledge of electronics.
It has been reported to throw your (bricked) device into download mode when no other method works, as well as reset the counters (tried and tested by me).
Once you get download mode, flash stock firmware w/ Odin and that could fix everything.

Yeah, that'll do it. Personally, I would only use XDA as a resource for rooting and not Google..in the Original Android Development sub-forum there is a great guide on flashing via Odin and applying stock firmware (in which, it actually states in BOLD not to tick the pit files.)
Good luck!
Never ever use pit file unless you know what a pit file is and know exactly what you are doing.....most bricked phones caused by flashing pit

Yikes..
If the jig doesn't work and you have to send the phone in it might be a good idea to not mention what exactly you did to make it behave thusly
*edit*
Also, if all else fails you might want to check the debricking service detailed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN7le4GmxZs

Well .. I think for sending it to the US you're looking at approximately ~85$ (shipping fees + repair)
Hard to tell what Samsung would charge if they found out you voided the warranty

Yes it says i9100 but it works for the i777. I just bought from that link and replaced it my I777 with basically the same problem you have. Problem was solved (see "usb won't connect" thread in Q&A).
There's a YouTube video showing how to replace it on the i9100, which I followed and is extremely similar to the i777.

I must add, that you should really evaluate yourself, and decide if you have the skills to do it. It can damage your phone permanently if you don't do it the right way.

at the risk of necromancing.... if anyone should stumble upon this looking for help like I did, through google. When you open your i777 up, the port board in your i777 says i9100, so yes the above listed item would work.

Does this require soldering to install? Are there any instructions available? Thank you.
Edit: I found a video here which I think should help.
Won't charge?
Like rushaan stated that you should think before you go any further, if your battery will not charge it could be more of an issue than a charger. For the last week I have been trying to boot mine and only get one of 2 messages, The Samsung boot image, and I have done all most everything I have read in our forums. The last run, I had been re-installing some apps, after a ROM change, all was going great ,then a message came up Stating that "due to the battery heating up,it was shutting down the charger" so, of course battery was drained and con not get the freakin' phone to do anything but show the "SAMSUNG" boot animation.. NOW, since then I can not get it to boot, esp. into CWM recovery. I am still reading to see what file/image that I maybe able to use while utilizing ODIN. So,with that being said look a bit more in-depth before you think you have the correct solution.

[Q] Unusual & unlikely Samsung GS3 i9300 running Gingerbread

Hi everyone! Today I finally decided to register in this great community, mainly because I'm looking for help and you are the ones that can help me.
I'm Henry and as the title says, I've hold and played with a Samsung Galaxy S3 running nothing more than Gingerbread. Why and how were my first questions when I first saw it, but I haven't been able to answer that.
This is the story: a friend of mine was given that GS3 hoping that he could solve the stuttering and lagging that it had (has) after a professor of him took it to a "technician". He, being the Android lover he is became surprised, so he came to me yesterday hoping that we could bring things back to normal (install stock jelly bean), but with no avail. That "thing" has the stock recovery and is not rooted, things we found EXTREMELY weird. We spent three hours trying to root it and then install a new recovery using different tools (gingerbreak, odin, odin mobile [we realized odin mobile needs root permissions to work, but still], samsung kies, universal_gb_root, framaroot) but you guessed: nothing worked. The only thing we didn't use was SuperOneClick. We couldn't put it into download mode and when we connected it to the pc, it didn't appeared as "adb interface" or "android composite device" but appeared with another strange name that had nothing to do with samsung or android, I can't recall the name of it right now. The other things we found was that the GS3 was showing that the internal storage was just 200mb, when it's a phone with "16"gb of storage, and that the battery says SAMSONG instead of SAMSUNG.
Long story short: it was an international, unlocked Samsung Galaxy GS3 i9300 running Gingerbread. My friend got it because a professor of him wanted he to fix it because after she took it to a "technician" it was very laggy. It was not rooted, it has stock android recovery (useless) and odin won't recognize it.
Do you guys have any effing idea of what is going on and how can we fix it?
We have three hypothesis: 1) they swapped her phone with a chinese knockoff (an extremely identical and functional knockoff); 2) they swapped the GS3's hard drive; 3) they didn't know what they were doing and installed Gingerbread instead of Jelly Bean (yup, sounds unlikely).
Thank you very much for yor help and attention!

They all do. These things you listed are the easiest things to "clone". In fact, since they live in software, they could easily have been ripped out of the official firmware. A friend of mine (willingly) bought a Note 2 clone. It even has the annoying whistle notification.
It's not that accurate a clone though, if it comes with gingerbread, which the S3 never came with.

You need to prove 2 things.
1) It is a fake
2) It was not a fake before
2 is quite easy if it was supplied form an official network / carrier / provider store. 1 will involve screenshots of the about phone area and some physical shots as well as some info gained from this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cpuid.cpu_z&hl=en

You're welcome. Please let me know how you get on,
Easiest way to tell a clone is to take the back off and compare side by side with a genuine s3, the shape of the inner mouldings, position of sim and sd readers is very hard to exactly match during the reverse engineering process.
But the gingerbread and lack of download mode is conclusive in itself.
Check the imei and serial numbers on the original phone packaging against the imei of the handset you hold, if they are the same then your friend bought a clone.

[Q] motherboard i9100 and i9100G

Hello,
my brothers galaxy s2 has broken down. i found on ebay a replacement motherboard, but it is not a i9100 but a i9100g motherboard.
i watched the pictures closely and it looks like the motherboard's shape is identical as the i9100 one, the connectors the antenna al looks like it is in the same spot so i was wondering if anyone knows if i can screw a i9100g motherboard into the phone.
kindest regards!

i have read about the differences between both models, i dont mind the differences.
My doubt now is if i can use a i9100g motherboard with the i9100 screen....
thanks
Yep that could be an issue, also...
If you use an I9100G MB, you're effectively turning it into an I9100G. You won't be able to use I9100 firmware, and you might have problems with the other components (apart from the screen) not playing nice with what's on the MB. If it were me & I was keen on keeping the phone, I'd get an I9100 MB (I mean, I wouldn't; I'd get a new phone, but for the purpose of this exercise), they're not difficult or expensive to source these days. I can only remember one thread like this (that I've seen at least; there has probably been a few others) over the past ~2 yrs, and I don't recall how that worked out (whether the person ended up trying an I9100G MB or not).
Edit to add - Hopefully TheUnderling sees this thread, he's pretty cluey re: the hardware side of things & might be able to give you a more definite idea of what things might go wrong or whether you can get it to work OK without too many problems.

i don't mind to turn it into a 9100G he doesn't use the phone for gaming or whatsoever. its pure for phoning txting and social media.
so do i understand you correct that if i get this mb and place it that the screen might not work at all or distort? what other components do you mean... earphones ? or the usb charge, the camera?
at the moment i will keep on searching then for a second handed i9100 for parts.
thanks for the details so far! :good:
I am not a technician but in my own opinion it should work.
All the differences between i9100 and i9100g are CPU, GPU and software - shortly, the **** placed on motherboard. Screens, cameras and other stuff is still the same so changing MB will simply turn 9100 into 9100g.
I'm actually considering the same thing (but also I consider putting MB with Qualcomm CPU).
Why? F*ck exynos and its overheating and brickbugs goddamn!

Android Area 51 Down?

Hi everyone I've been trying to check out some Samsung Galaxy Centura ROMs and I know there are some cool ones on Android Area 51 but this whole week it the site seems to have been down. Does anyone know whats going one?
Same story here. Been trying to get on since December. I've been looking for that ARC1.3.zip - if anyone has it I'd appreciate it. That's all I need.
edit: I just got it through a direct link in the Idiot's Guide to rooting centura PDF
So...does anyone actually know what has become of Androidarea51 ??
I've been trying to access that site for some time now and it always fails to load.
Not sure what happened at AA51. They are the reason I got into Android and modding. They covered a lot of the lower-end devices.
In any event, if anyone needs files for the devices I worked on or kept for one reason or another I have files for Lg Optimus Fuel L34C, Lg Optimus Q/Net, ZTE Roamer/Merrit, Samsung Galaxy Proclaim/Illusion, Samsung Galaxy Core Prime/Prevail LTE, and I may still have some files for ST Galaxy S3. (which uses Verizon ROMs and recoveries)
Hit me up if you need anything for these devices.

Thanks for replying RealWelder.
For me AA51 -and- the LG L34C together were what made for a great turning point in my own Android adventures.
I needed a decent low-end device for wifi uses only - and the L34C went on sales for $5 & $10 & I was lucky enough to grab a couple.
If I'd known how good those little phones really were, I'd have gotten 1/2 dozen of them while they were so cheap & still wish I could find a few more to buy cheaply someplace, really !!
Best Wishes.

I still have a fuel, but my daughter plays her games on it. Lol. If you are interested in modding your fuels out I got some cool stuff I could share. I've been modding my Tab3, I've went through it and made all the text appearances and icons colorable via color pickers and a RomControl app.
Check out tdunham's Unified TouchWiz mods thread. It is mostly for Samsung's but a lot of the mods are "self-sufficient" so they should work on any device.

My couple of those were slightly modded with the AA51 ROM so as to be rooted & de-krapified.
They get used as terrific MP3 players & GPS units.
If I ever come across a couple more I'll look into making more mods.
For actual cellular uses my favourites are the Kyocera Hydro Icon & the LG Volt - both of which cost around $20 & really satisfy all my phone type needs - also rooted & de-krapified, of course.
There's Android stuff I want to use on the bigger screen - that is my present desire, and I'm hoping for that purpose that Anbox matures quickly.
I know there are other ways to do this, but that one looks most promising for Linux users right now.
Thanks and Best Wishes.
End of the golden age of Android
So sad. First Cyanogenmod site gone, now this. Android hobbyists were edged out by the new compiling method of LP (among other things) and seemed to be a slippery slope of grass-roots support for the platform. Large swaths of the xda forums have become ghost towns.
Not sure if your still trying to find arc1.3 but if my mind serves me correctly I may have it saved to either my laptop or one of my flash drives. I will have to look for it because I had all the aa51 roms for the galaxy Centura as I still have one floating around somewhere with a busted outer glass running arc.

Uploading you a zip right now, I'll post when finished.
It has cwm, twrp, root, return to stock, meid fix, and cwm loop fix. [DO NOT factory reset from Settings, or you'll have to flash loop fix(stock recovery) and then reflash your custom recovery.]
Here you go.

Same story here. Been trying to get on since December. I've been looking for that ARC1.3.zip - if anyone has it I'd appreciate it. That's all I need.
edit: I just got it through a direct link in the Idiot's Guide to rooting centura PDF

Is there any way you could uploaded me a copy of TWRP or whatever custom recovery you have for the Centura? I have a buddy needing the recovery.
Update: I got ahold of a cwm for it. It works but doesn't mount all partitions correctly...is this what you have also?

Yep, type this in your browser ftp://asburycctv.mooo.com/
These are all the area51 centura files i have ever downloaded.... not sure how long i will have these shared publicly, so download and repost (say from google drive, or something), as soon as you get to it.
Thanks and good luck!
Was hoping there would be some more recent Centura development myself, bummer all online sources seem to be gone :/
SIDENOTE: These phones make great security cameras using IP Webcam app by the way

I have stuff for the fuel, but not sure about the zone 2. Is it l40c? I've read before that they were the same device, but just on a different carrier (Verizon instead of ST) but idk if they have same bootloader signature. The images had to be "bumped" in order to pass bootloader. You could try, but it would be at your own risk. If you do, share the results so I'll know if they work on it.

I can't do jack **** to this phone man :crying: It's got that corrupted memory thing going on, i think it got water damage or something. it has the "boot certification verify" error and it shows up as, no ****, 27 different empty/corrupt usb drives when i plug it into my computer, which has the drivers for it and does somehow recognize it

I have one on the same condition. There's no fix unfortunately. The bootloader has been tripped.
