[1] Intro
Hello XDA community,
Today I want to show you, how to fix the "Firmware upgrade..." screen after a failed flashing
process. This method works for me and I don't know if this will fix your Player.
If this method won't fix your issue, try another ODIN3 version, USB port (min. USB 2.0) and cable.
Always handle with care, flashing is never 100 % save!
Good luck, MrBrubble
[2] Requirements
- bricked Player
- Windows PC
- ODIN (min. V1.85)
- USB cable for your device
- Stock ROM and kernel
[3] Instructions
1. Download stock ROM and kernel (factoryfs.img and normalboot.img)
2. If they're not packed in a *.tar file yet, pack them both into one
3. Take the battery out of the player and wait a few seconds
4. Put the battery back and wait a few seconds, again
5. Boot your device in Download mode
6. After the warning, it'll say: "Firmware upgrade..." IGNORE this!
7. Select the tar file (including factoryfs.img and normalboot.img) in PDA section in ODIN
8. Check that "Auto Reboot" and "F. Reset time" are the only things which are checked
9. Connect player and wait until it is recognized by ODIN
10. Click "Start!" and wait until flashing is fully finished
11. Reboot, note that the first boot can take up to 10 minutes
If this worked --> Hit thanks
If not --> PM me with your name, model and a description of your problem

I'm not responsible if this guide will brick your lovely player. Use it at your own risk!
Thank you for this. Although many people don't have this problem, It I a good guide to have available

i get this problem semi-often while using heimdall to flash a kernel. i simply run the heimdall command again from the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue" screen and it tries again. I simply re-run heimdall until it works (usually first time works, sometimes second is needed, and very rarely a third time). So basically I can just pretend "firmware upgrade encountered an issue" screen says "odin mode" and flash away
wai.. wait!
my device doesn't go through the WARNINGs.
is my phone COMPLETELY BROKEN..?

Hello there,
Well, my Galaxy S 2, after uninstalling a program, got an error (black screen, need to restart...) and so doesn't start anymore (freezes at "Samsung Galaxy S II" screen) or enter in recovery mode (freezes with the robot on background, without letters). I have the download mode yet.
I tried to flash a rom with odin, but it freezes at "NAND write start" process (I've waited 30 min), and I have to abort disconecting the phone.
Could anyone help me?
Thanks
You get into the download mode. That's good. The flashing fails. That's not good.
We need more info to help you. The fact that you had some error and now cannot flash some firmware does not really help us. At least me...
Here are some questions I have:
What firmware did you try to flash?
What Operating System are you using?
Do you have KIES installed?
or
Where do you got the drivers from?
Did ODIN work in the past or did you never use it before?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Thank you for answering.
I've never flashed any firmware before on this phone (it has the original one). I tried to flash the stock XXKI1, using just the PDA field. So, Odin still at "NAND write start" part.
As I said, I had an error after uninstalling an app (launcher error), that I've forced to remove the battery. After that, the phone didn't start anymore (freeze at "Samsung Galaxy SII" screen), and I can't enter in recovery mode.
I don't have Kies installed (got the drivers separated).
Sorry that it took me so long to answer you.
If you still have the problem, I'll try my best to guide you through the process of restoring your device.
What do you want to install on your device?
-A stock rom
-A customrom based on TouchWiz
-CyanogenMod
-MIUI
Just let me know and I'll help you asap.
A stock rom...
Okay, where do you live? Or more accurate, what language do you want to use later?
Your first step is to get the "Heimdall Suite" up and running on your PC.
Download it from their homepage. Extract it somewhere where you can easily find it later. Then you'll need to install the drivers.
Put your phone into download-mode and plug it in. If they aren't installed yet, Windows will now start the installation. When completed, open the "drivers"-folder in the Heimdall folder. Run "zDiag" as administrator.
Enable the show all devices option and select either "Samsung USB composite device" or "Gadget serial" (depending on what's available in your dropdown-list). Install the driver and ignore the warning from Windows (install it anyway).
Now that everything is set up, your first step is to get the ".pit" file for your device. I'll check whether yours is valid. Open the Heimdall frontend as administrator and go into the last tab. Click on detect device and, if your device gets detected, click on print pit. If you get errors in the output, disconnect your phone, shut it down and enter download-mode again. Retry.
Please post the output here.

I seriously need professional help from you all. I unlocked my bootloader a month before and I didn't know how to relock it back so I searched and found this website >>androidgadgematic
I followed everything it mentioned and after finished installation, I hold on the boot button, the green light indicator blinked once and vibrated once but after that gave no respond. I didn't unroot my phone before doing the relock procedure. Now, I really don't know what to do because I searched google but none of them help me. I indeed need a step by step procedure to save my phone. You people here are the only way to help me to boot my phone now, or else it is dead. I don't have if any method to reinstall ALL system files, no matter kernel, firmwares via my pc as long as it can helo my phone to boot up.

- All you need to do is to reflash using the official or any rom that is on .ftf format and your flashtool program. Or just simply by following the steps below if your phone is using the official OS that Sony has provided.
Alternate way:
Run the Pc companion Software
Turn the phone off and disconnect it from the computer
1. No matter what the program says do not connect the phone until you complete step 9
2. In the welcome screen if asked click on start, Next you will be shown what media go offers, click on "next" then you will see a presentation on what support zone offers, click on "Finish"
3. In the next section from "support zone" and "media go" new select "support zone" and click on start.
4. On the next page select "Software update" and click on "start"
At this point if you get an error stating that "unable to install update components" or "server is busy" Please proceed to step 12
5. The program will say that there is no phone connected and will ask you to connect but disregard that and instead choose the option to "repair Phone".(the program will issue you a warning on the content that you will lose during the update)
6. Choose the option to continue.
7. After that, the program will download the necessary information (5 to 6 minutes) and it will present you with a list of phones.
8. Choose the Phone from the list (close to the bottom of the list) click on the icon for the phone and then click on "next"
then you will see a new section telling you how to connect the phone. (don't connect it yet)
At this point the phone must be off and disconnected from the PC.
9. Connect the cable to the PC not to the phone, then follow the instructions on screen to connect the phone
(It's critical to Press and hold the indicated key before and after you connect the phone to the PC until the update starts), if done correctly the program will say "the update of your phone has started..." (in some cases a message of "Installing drivers" will appear before the message of "the update of your phone has started..." is shown.)
10. If you failed to follow the steps correctly the phone will still be the same and won't boot up. If this happens disconnect the phone from the cable, turn it off and repeat from step 9).
11. If the PC Companion proceeds correctly wait for the update to finish and follow instructions on screen.

That's funny because it works for me! Are you sure you put in SGH-I717 in ALL CAPS?
Here's another method.
Download this file http://www.mediafire.com/download/g7gn29h7nu63id5/I717UCMD3_I717ATTMD3_ATT.zip
Extract (unzip) the firmware file
Download Odin v3.09
Extract Odin zip-file
Open Odin v3.09
Reboot phone in Download Mode (press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons)
Connect phone and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin
Add the firmware file to AP / PDA
Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked
Click the start button, sit back and wait a few minutes

Sorry you're having trouble. I've never came across someone with a loop at optimization before. Maybe you can try to re download the file and repeat the process again. You might have a corrupt download.
Hello all,
First of all, I'm posting this here just cause I can't find a thread describing this situation.
***I'M NOT the owner/creator of any file here and is not that easy to find it.
***I'M NOT responsible for any casualities that leads to a bricket phone or else.
***Make sure that you have a backup of all your data that you want to keep.
***On the download link you can find all the files mentioned below.
I advice that if you try to push the recovery.img from others releases, may result a boot loop.
READ ALL THIS THREAD BEFORE START TO DO.
HOW TO SOLVE THE LOOP:
- Run or Install SamFirm software;
- Write the model number and set the region. (You will need to google a little to find out what's the name of yours, mine is ZTO -> Brazil).
- You can fill all the boxes or can check "Auto" to skip it. ("auto" always worked to me).
- And than, click on "Check Update".
***Your mobile don't need to be plugged to do the research.
- If the software find a firmware, UNcheck the option "Check CRC32".
- Download and Decrypt throught the software.
On the download link you can find the release that worked to me, but first, try to find from your region.
BEFORE MAKING MODIFICATIONS, IS NECESSARY TO GO TO (IF IT POSSIBLE):
Settings -> Developer Options -> OEM unlocking
AND ENABLE OEM UNLOCK AND USB DEBUGGING FIRST OR YOU MAY ENCOUNTER 'BLOCKED BY FRP LOCK' WHEN FLASHING.
- Using any version of Odin v3.09 or higher, connect the device on Download mode and select the firmware on "AP" slot, uncheck the Auto Reboot in Options and hit the start.
- When the flashing finishes, Odin will show a message in green "PASS", remove the battery and unplug the USB cable.
- Reinsert the battery and restart the phone normally.
- Try to use it for how about 20 minutes, letting the update finishes all background tasks. The phone will be very slow but don't worry.
- Restart again when the updates finishes and wait for more 20 minutes with the phone unlocked.
You should pay attention to the battery level after every system reboot.
- Now you are able to flash the recovery.tar.
To install TWRP:
Boot to DOWNLOAD mode.
Flash with ODIN in the AP slot.
Uncheck Auto reboot.
Load the "recovery.tar" into the AP slot and hit start.
When the flashing finishes, Odin will show a message in green "PASS", remove the battery and unplug the USB cable.
Reinsert the battery and press Vol UP + Home + Power Button till the TeamWin Appears.
DON'T do nothing, just restart again after that.
Reboot again in the Recovery mode and install the SuperSU.zip. MUST TO BE 2.82v or higher, if not, you will need to start over.
*** Don't wipe any cache after install the SuperSU.

A friend gave me a T-Mobile S5 but it has no ROM installed. It boots up to recovery and I can't figure out how to get a ROM installed.
It's been a while since I have flashed a ROM but even without custom recovery like TWRP, can't I just install a ROM, even if it's just a stock, non rooted one?
I've tried via micro SD but maybe I didn't download the right file.
I'm on a Linux computer and tried pushing TWRP via USB but I can't get the computer to recognize the device.
Please help. I'd be happy with any ROM as long as I can boot up.
Attached a picture of the only thing I see when I turn it on

WOW! The G900TUVU1CNK2 was Android 4.4.2 that was released on 10 Nov 2014.
The following information is what is needed to be done to redo the whole thing from the start.
Download and Unzip the following files...
Odin PC Software:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=746163614322265284
Samsung USB PC Drivers:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=890129502657584827
Firmware for SM-G900T:

Download the following pit file...
Pit for SM-G900T:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=289576
Place the two Stock Pit file and the Stock Firmware file (the unzipped firmware will have a tar.md5 file extension) within the Odin Software Folder.
Now perform the following steps:
1) Install the Samsung USB Driver Software.
2) Once #1 has completed, be sure to have your device turned off and then press and hold the Volume Down and the Home Button (Front Bottom Center Button) and then press and hold the power button.
Release all the buttons once the first screen displays (just a warning regarding your entering Odin/Download Mode) and then press the Volume Up button just once.
Your device is now in Odin/Download Mode.
3) Connect your device to your PC via the USB Cable and wait til the PC detects and loads the device within the system.
4) Once #3 has completed, open/launch the Odin Software and then place the Firmware in the AP/PDA slot. It will hang for a moment as Odin confirms the Firmware to be good to go.
5) Once #4 has completed, select the Pit option and place the Pit file in its prospective slot.
Note: Be sure that the only options in the Odin software that are ticked/selected are the F.Reset Time and Auto-Reboot. Do Not tick/select any additional boxes.
6) Now select the "Start" button at the bottom and be patient.
Once Odin is done, your device will reboot itself and you will see a Green Box with the word 'PASS' in it.
Now you can disconnect the USB Cable from the PC and Device and it should be good to go from there.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
Good Luck!

THANK YOU!!!!
First of all, thank you for replying at all. An even bigger thank you for taking the time to respond with such details. I am busy this coming week but will try your methods next weekend.
I just didn't want to wait a week to thank you for being gracious.
I am concerned that the ODIN file, the only one I looked at so far is an EXE file which I don't think will run on Linux . I may be wrong so please feel free to correct me.

Your correct regarding the Odin Software being for Windows...
I haven't used Linux in a long time myself but, luckily I had remembered seeing the following thread where a member had developed an Odin for Linux.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3777030
I don't know what the big differences are between the two myself but, don't be afraid to ask for some support and guidance within that thread specifically regarding the Odin for Linux itself.
Good Luck!
