They light up when the ambient light sensors detects it's dark.

dim the lights

is there an option to dim the capacitive buttons or turn them off when screen brightness is at 0%? or how about an app that could do that?
this was also a problem for me on the evo as I would read using the kindle app at night.

Yes there is way. You need an app to do so, and I believe it is available in the market. It is called Screen Filter.
very nice! thank you very much!

I wrote the dev of Screen Filter to see if he can implement a slider to adjust the capacitive buttons, rather than turning them off completely. I guess we'll see what happens...

I think the buttons on this phone are so much nicer than the track ball on the Hero. THAT was blinding in a dark room. lol

Hardware lights for soft buttons on/off

Hello,
I find the white lights on the soft buttons way to bright and quite annoying when sitting in the dark on my phone. Is there any sw out there that can tweak this? I am rooted.
Thanks in advance.

You can turn the lights off. Just in to Settings / Display / Touch light key duration and you can choose OFF.
I don't have those options for some reason. Running a stock Google rom.
Thanks though

Banding above capacitive buttons

Anyone have a slight shadow or banding above the navigation buttons ? Especially on white backgrounds like the Google homepage?

I'm not sure if it's banding or light leakage but I have it. I noticed it last night after the store closed and I'm debating on exchanging it.

If what im seeing is what you are seeing then I cant really say that its noticeable at all for me (trust me im super super keen on these kinds of things) I dont see any light leakage which is good
I can definitely confirm now that when the menu bar is present with my capacitive buttons on, there's definitely light leaking over and I can see 3 areas where the light is overpowering the black.

No light leakage here

Brightness of capacitive buttons

Does anyone know a way to turn down the brightness of the capacitive buttons? When they light up they light the entire bottom of the phone up.
