DNA review - HTC Droid DNA

What do you guys think of this review? agree? vehemently disagree?
I agree. I love this phone, despite it not working well with my own Jam speaker.
http://www.itiswhatitis.biz/1/post/2013/05/htc-dna-verizon.html

Agreed. DNA is probably the best phone I've ever used.

I sure like it. Usually I get that ancy feeling when a new phones comes out that I "must get that!"", but so far I've been more than happy with the DNA :good:

I agree absolutely love this phone diffident content with everything.

This is probably one the best devices I've ever used. The hardware is phenomenal and it can handle a ported unofficial 4.2.2 android rom like a charm.

I think the author is my alternate reality self. We both had bb storms (I actually really liked mine, maybe because in was used to the hard resets from my curve.) he got the incredible, I got the DROID X. He got the bionic and I got the thunderbolt lol. Although I think my addiction is more severe since I've also owned a RAZR maxx and a gnexus. I'll be keeping the dna for a good long while though. I really really love my phone.

That was a great review.
I'm coming from the bionic as well. My ex roommate was a really bad Verizon employee and gave me one. I didn't realize what I was missing until I got the nexus 7 and realized having a locked bootloader sucks. Never owning another moto phone either.

Can you root a stock Samsung phone now without having to deal with that "Rage against the Cage" nonsense? Tried it once on my wife's Facinate and my anti-virus program wouldn't let Rage run, even when I disabled it. (I know there are ROM's with pre-rooted Kernels you can flash. Just flashed rooted GB 2.3.5 kernel to my Galaxy Tab.)

Yep, I know but it's either buy me a phone now or buy my wife one now, so how do you think that's gonna go? Lol
But all that aside, I checked out the razr today & plan on comparing it to the Rezound next week. My bottom line is reception & my x2 has never failed me where my wife's dinc hasn't been too impressive so htc might not be the best for me.

Rage in the cage new? Never had to use it. First root ever was a one click root i found somewhere. Then i used Odin to flash the stock froyo pre-root. I believe i seen a pre-root GB stock over there, too.

I believe "Rage against the Cage" is the exploit scheme that they used on the Samsung one-click boot process. It's been about 6 months since I've tried to root the Facinate, so my memory is sketcy. The upside is that, as you mentioned, there are probably a lot of pre-rooted ROM offerings that can be easily flashed with Heimdall (or Odin, if yer into that).
I agree Sammy makes a good phone. Wife loves her Facinate. Sadly, the Galaxy II never made it to Verizon, but now lots of folks are waiting for the Nexus, which should be out around the end of the month. But I also like the Moto Droid line, now that we've been given some developer attention. The hardware is top notch, and my X2 is running VERY snappy and stable on Moto-Ginger-Funk v7a. I have no reason to want to trade up for a long while yet (unless Google cannot get a handle on their funky Market issue).
Droid Razr looks very sharp (sorry for the pun). I'm a little afraid of the non-removeable battery, though. There are loads of times that I have recoved my X2 from brink of "brickhood" just by pulling the battery and booting into recovery.
I'm not too crazy about the Razr's non-detachable battery. All too often taking the battery out and putting it back in seems to solve a problem, without having that ability on the Razr I'm somewhat concerned.
Odin=Heimdall but for diff operating systems, i believe. When my contract is up, I'm looking into sprint if vzw isn't allowed to launch the SGSII. And no, i have no intentions of turning this thread into a "who it's better sprint or vzw". Carry on w/ upgrade discussion...

I'm pretty sure that the razr has a failsafe two buttons u.press to kill battery connection or something similar
.like a "hard kill" switch.
I am upgrading to the ReZound Monday. There are more reasons not to get the Razr, than there are to get it lol. If you are in an X2 now, you are better off either keeping it and riding out your time, or getting the ReZound/Nexus, at least right now.

What led you to the Rezound? Beats audio or the the display?
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
Well, the headphones alone carry a very hefty price, so getting them "free" for the same price as the other phones is a good incentive(probably why they aren't advertising the phone). I already have the SkullCandy Titan Earbuds, so I really don't NEED the Beats Audio ones. But, the camera's on it are both better. The screen resolution is on par with the nexus on a DX2 size screen. Removable battery, SD storage, unlockable BL, 1.5GHz processor.. Basically, the only "feature" it doesn't carry is the super slim design, and who gives a **** if the phone is lacking in so many other categories? lol.
My moms Stock Inc2 walked all over my X2 with Eclipse before I even put CM7 on it for her! HTC is doing all the right things, even with Sense. Too many people complain about Samsung, and I lived in Korea for 2 years from 07-09, we are getting their leftovers over here(Thanks FCC/FTC, and assholes running patent wars..Apple).
Yeah Im gonna look into adding a line soon. Not sure if I'm going to resound or nexus yet
Rezound looks sick. As does nexus(ICS!) but I can see resound getting ics eventually.
ha. HTC edge I thought about until I saw it was Tegra. I will wait for reviews on that before even trying it lol. This phone has lowered my expectations for tegra devices lol

We did that actually, got the original DX the day they came out. Loved em. I moved from a bb curve and she from a Moto rokr. When the DX gb bugs hit we were offered DX2s and took them since we had the car docks etc. Didn't feel like switching 100 worth of accessories.
AtLemacks right, seems that the Razer with limitations or something without. Hardware is close enough on either one. Why move to another Moto and keep banging your head against the wall like we do daily.

Is buying a Fascinate still worth it?

Hey Guys! I'm visiting from the Droid X forums wondering about a certain idea i have been thinking about for a while....
The droid X has been plagued since its conception by its locked bootloader. Even though the dev field has made aw esome strides with this device (2nd-init)(Don't worry if you dont know what that is), we still have to rely on Moto giving us updated kernels. We do have Gingerbread, but the Droid X will likely never see ICS.
I really dont feel like buying a brand new phone for a while, mostly because im friggin broke lol. One of my best buddies has a Captivate, and I love the ease of use when it comes to flash-ability and complete control of the phone, especially with the unbrickable mod! With all these pluses, and the fact that since the Fascinate is a Galaxy S phone, with the same internals as the Nexus S, I'm fairly sire that the phone will get ICS some how.
I already have a used phone I have found that a guy is selling for really cheap. Depending on its condition, would you say its a good buy?
Thanks is advance!
Tony

Ill keep that in mind if this one doesn't work out. Thanks!
Anyone else have thoughts?
Yes the fascinate is still worth buying if you can score one for a 100bucks. development is still going fairly strong for being over a year old.
I think the Fascinate is a great phone. I'm sure we'll be seeing ICS not too long after the source drops. Just like droidstyle said, if you can find one that cheap, I'd do it. I bought mine back in the summer for $200 and haven't regretted it yet..... This upgrade I have is burning a hole in my pocket though... Damned Galaxy Nexus! XD
Yes
The fascinate is still hands down a very powerful phone. My buddy just got the Droid Bionic and it only gets average 25 fps in quadrant scores. My fascinate gets about 50 or more. So, yes it is still an awesome phone.

I love mine as well. It has one of the best screens and graphics accelerators there is. The screen isn't too big and not too small. It isn't really thick so it slips in the pocket really nice. It is also a great looking phone.

Should I trade my thunderbolt for a droid razr and cash?

I offered to trade my thunderbolt for a droid razr and they offered it plus cash. Should I take it? I don't like moto much but just curious if anyone else thought it was a good deal.

I suppose I'm just a fan of HTC phones, but I would stick to the Thunderbolt.
Your phone works perfectly and you know how to use it correctly. The Razr would be another whole thing to get used to and you take a chance on that phone having its issues.
I'm probably way out there on my concept, and I'd also hate to see you leave the Thunderbolt community. We've lost a lot of people already, and as active as you are here, it would be much lonely here.
Besides that, I just personally think the Thunderbolt is a better phone... but that's just my opinion of it.

I like my thunderbolt just fine I was just thinking of the moto razr as a slight upgrade. I'm mo stranger to Motorola all. My wife had the og droid and a droid 3 (both of which were huge piles of crap) and rooted them both. I'm just worried ill get that razr and it will be a huge steaming pile like my wife's droids. Thanks, you helped me decide against it.

Good. I tried. Haha.
I've mostly always heard bad reviews about moto phones.
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
The displays in them after the og droid look like crap. You can actually see the digitizer on it which is annoying to me. Plus blur sucks really bad IMO. I think blur just looks terrible. Hardware wise the phone is better but I think the display and blur are enough for me to not want it.

I know this is a few days old, but another vote for keeping the Thunderbolt. I checked out the RAZR and RAZR MAXX in the store, and absolutely hated the display and overly large bezel, as well as the odd hard edges of the phone. While the Thunderbolt is older and has lower specs, I still prefer it. Heck, I missed it after using a GS3 for a couple days.
Yea I'm not getting it. I really hate moto phones.

This device worth it???

I'm considering buying this device, and I was wondering what people think of it, how the development is, and last but not least, how hard is it getting used to the size. I've played around with it for a little bit, but $300 is a little hard to swallow for something I'm unsure of. I appreciate any opinions... BTW I looked for a general talk thread before I posted here
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
I haven't read many complaints at all. I didn't have to get use to the size, it was nice right away.
Look in the development sections, it was rooted 2 or 3 days after release and the bootloader was unlocked a week later.
There are at least 5 or 6 ROMs out for it at the moment.
I have owned about 12 android phones since the OG DROID.... This is easily the best phone I have ever owned. The size feels normal now... Doesn't feel big at all. I could never go to a smaller screen now. This phone is stupid fast too.... All around awesome
Sent from my most awesome phone EVER!!!!
i have to say this is my best upgrade since going from the curve to the original droid. Ive had the droid x, thunderbolt, charge, and gs3, but this is just another world of usefulness. I havent turned my tablet on since getting it.
I have owned practically every Motorola android phone. This is my first Samsung. I am thoroughly impressed. It's absolutely awesome. At this point it would take me a lot to go back to Motorola - or a smaller phone. I love the size of it. It has almost replaced both my tablets. I would highly recommend it.
Sent from my Note 2 using xda premium
Best phone I've owned, I'm 6'5 so the size makes no issue to me. I feel funny holding any other device now. Don't forsee myself ever owning anything smaller. On the other hand, rumors of the n3 being 6.3in are crazy? This device is sized perfectly.
I was also able to haggle with Verizon down to $250, tell them you know a manager in another territory that can ship you phone on discount but you don't wanna wait, tell them you want to walk out with it today (when you go in). Discount is around $60 from a territory manager I know...
Good luck!

No regrets at all I was scared to jump on it but after having the phone for a little while it's amazing.
I think you'll have more trouble getting used to the size of any phone other than this one once you've used it. After one day with this phone I don't imagine I could ever use a smaller phone again. As for development, considering how new it is, it's pretty impressive. We have a few TouchWiz and AOSP roms already. I thought 300 was outrageous at first (considering all other high-end phones are about 200) but considering the amount of phone (feature-wise and physically) it is pretty reasonable. Just go for it. I am (almost) willing to personally guarantee you'll love it.

I just got this phone yesterday. I paid full retail price for it. I thought I would be disappointed, however I love it. I have had the OG droid, the Galaxy nexus, Droid bionic, HTC rezound... and now this. The OG droid was my favorite before this. All the phones in between were pretty bogus, none of them met my expectations. This phone is a massive leap in hardware and software compared to all the others.
You ask that question on this forum.. what results are you excepting? If people are here, they are fans of the device.
As for me, it's awesome. I got my teenage son one too, he is ecstatic.
I couldn't decide and finally just said **** it since Verizon extended the return period. So far I'm very happy. Came from a Galaxy Nexus...

im in the same boat , bought off contract to keep unlimited data. In coming from a gnexus I will say that I love love love the hardware but I hate the software. I've become such a CM fanboy that i think im just jaded to sloppy looking touchwiz and carrier bloat. ill be in heaven once some official cm nightlies start rolling out. for now the jelly beans rom and nova have hidden a lot of the touchwiz bs but theres still a lot to remove to be back to normal. I have to also add that im very impressed with the battery life of this thing.
I paid the full price for and I hate paying full price for anything and it was worth it. You part of the club yet?

So does that just mean that it isn't going to have the "DROID" branding? I assume that HTC and Samsung wouldn't be very happy if Verizon was going to ditch all other android devices.
So you could have a DNA2, just not a "DROID" DNA2. Right?

I still have hope for a US Butterfly S. HTC would be an idiot of a company not to release it to a US market. The question is, will it come to Verizon? The DNA wasn't much of a success on Verizon (but the J Butterfly was over in Japan was), so they might aim for a GSM carrier. OR it may come to sprint as the HTC Evo Butterfly.
Also, I kind of understand Verizon's decision to make the Droid line Motorola-only. The non-Moto Droids have never done well. Read: Droid Charge, and (dare I say it) DNA. The Moto Droids have almost always been top-selling devices. Like the original Droid and its sequels, The RAZR line, specifically the original Droid RAZR Maxx, and the Mini/Maxx/Ultra will likely follow that path.
BTW: I'm stuck with my DNA (and i'm perfectly fine with that) for the next year and a half, so absolutely none of this will affect me until my contract ends in Jan 2015. I personally couldn't care less what happens with the whole Butterfly S/DNA 2 situation, but I understand some of you like to replace your device more frequently (which is perfectly fine) so I'm just adding my $0.02 to anyone who may be interested.

Who cares, the new phones don't have much wow factor to make me think the DNA is missing something or is being left behind. And looking at the development, the DNA has a good number of roms and kernels so I don't feel like it is under developed.
The DNA will be running strong for at least three years.
What I don't understand is... We have a 5 Inch, 1080P, Quad Core Android cell phone.. Nobody seems to care? We do!! But it's always about the HTC One, whatever Motorola is coming out with.. and Nokia Windows 8 phones..the next Nexus.. What is Samsung doing?? We have an absolute monster phone that I love yet there was almost ZERO hype behind it.. launched, then .. "Hey, I'm still here, I'm free now" .... Unless I missed something in my zombie like state of mind lately.. People ask what phone I have, then I tell them.. and I hear crickets.. People have no idea about this beast!!
See if people are wowed when you tell them you have the new Droid Ultra with a whopping 5 inch screen, powerful 1.7 dual core processor, and an unprecedented 2 gb ram plus the usually lousy Moto camera.

Completely agree with you. I firmly believe that the Droid DNA/J Butterfly/DLX is the second most innovative device of the modern mobile technology world. Second only to the Ubuntu Edge. I think the mistake was making this beast a Verizon exclusive. If they had endorsed the DNA the way they did with the One, or how Samsung has done since the Galaxy S2, they could easily blow the SGS4 and Xperia Z out of the water. Don't get me wrong, the One, S4 and XPZ are all great devices, but the DNA could easily rank right up there with them if HTC had really tried. And that's not even mentioning the Butterfly S. Bringing it to the states and endorsing it on all major carriers could set HTC for eternity. It takes the overall greatness of our DNAs and gives it all the things we love about the One (like boomsound). It's pretty much the ultimate smartphone IMO. HTC needs to play smart in the future, or they'll crash and burn. Hopefully the One's success will teach them this.
