looking for a aosp with a working camera - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are there any AOSP type roms out there for this phone with a working camera? I'd prefer ICS but gingerbread is okay. I'd also prefer to avoid Sense but it is more important that the camera work and the ROM be as error free as possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Your best bet would be to flash liquid gingerbread or thundershed, both gingerbread ROMs. There are a few lingering bugs on ICS AOSP as compared to gingerbread, data was more stable on gingerbread, and gingerbread AOSP had fully working camera and camcorder, as well as kernel options... Just my .02

One thing I noticed was the quality of a photo on aosp was down right bad when compared to a sense version. I would agreed in using a gingerbread version also ROM if you want a camera that works but don't know how you will like the quality of the photo.

The new cm camera app takes surprisingly good pictures. They aren't grainy like they used to be. To me they are as close to sense as they have ever been. Soon we will have a fully functional camera for ICS aosp ROMs since kernel source has been released.

[Q] Which ROM would suit me best?

I was originally rooted and ran Das Bamf for a while but it bothered me that the front facing camera and voicemail notifications did not work, so I unrooted and upgraded to OTA.
Here is what I'm looking for in a ROM:
* Gingerbread based
* 100% phone functions work as they should (front facing camera, voicemail notifications, etc.)
* Bloatware removed
* Stock interface (sense or AOSP) ... I'm just not much for customized screens, fonts, etc.
Is there a ROM for me?

how is this guy not banned yet for being so picky?
well, i'd say probably Das BAMF (sense based) although those folk aren't welcome around these parts. you'll have to look elsewhere for their ROMs.
Until Verizon and HTC release an official Gingerbread build for this phone, the Voicemail from Verizon will not work properly.
I've tried just about every sense ROM there is. There are versions of visual voicemail that work...but I sold myself to Google Voice a while ago...and I should've done it sooner.
Any GB build is based off a leak and folks "Tweaking" things to get them to work.
You could try 10 different ones, I'd damn near guarantee none of them will have 100% of everything working (as pointed out by VM...for starters).
There are quite a few good choices... DroidTh3ory builds a mean, lean and fast one.
DAS BAMF is nice as is Virus ROMs (Synergy).
There are plenty others, but these are the main three I bounce between...
Get into a good nandroid habit...and you can go from one ROM to the next in 20 minutes or so...and learn basic ADB Shell commands in case you bork...download the Android SDK.
Voicemail and FFC work on AOSp ROMs.

Bamf 3.0 sense exes 4.9 works great....

I disagree on bamf sense 3.0 working great. It works, has its bugs but its not like aosp so I agree with Droid theory. And btw his roms are excellent. I've used gingered. And infused before I switched to liquid thunderbread and he just came out with an aosp. So props on that. And besides I feel bad for you for going back to stock with bloatware and slowdownthephones absolute potential ware. Hahahahs. And ffc and voicemail have worked fine forr me. With every rom I've had. It didn't like to work on stock though.

Im in the same boat. I just got a TBolt and have it rooted, but am a little confused about all the ROMS (Sense 2.1, 3.0, etc) Should I just stay with rooted "stock" until GB is officially out?
Quick question.... Boot newbie question.... What us aosp?

AOSP is android open source project. Google gave devs their code and told em to go to town to help develop better software. The difference between aosp and sense is this. Sense roms are typically 269 MB or more. Aosp roms are 69-79 MB smaller more efficient and extremely faster.
Sent from my HTC ThunderBolt using XDA App
Try DroidTh3ory's AOSP 1.1.1. This is the fastest, and most stable AOSP experience I've had. Totally bloat-free, 100% functionality, best performance of any rom, hands down.
AOSP - Android Open Source Project - Barebones android, released to dev's to fine-tune for devices.
Sense - HTC's 'fine-tuning' of AOSP, including 200mb+ of 'pretty' and 'shiny' and 'bloaty' and 'whatever else verizon, amazon, htc, your mom wants to stick in there.'
So I'm currently running Bamf 3.0 rc4.9 is considered aosp or sense? Do you still have all functionality of sense Roms? Does running an aosp extend battery life? Oh another newb question.... How do I make a nandroid backup? Is it a app or just recovery image? Thanks in advance

You are running sense 3.0 so it is not aosp at all. It may be fast but does not compare to any of the aosp roms. when I first switched to an aosp rom my eyes started glowing with the speeds. For example I was running Gingered theory and got 1885 on my quadrant scores. (Overclocked to 1.9) And when I switched to aosp I got 3000 on just 1.4 overclocked.

Yep. You're good. When you flash a new rom it will get rid of your current kernel. Cause roms already come with kernels.
There are kernels for aosp and sense. Use aosp kernel for aosp. Don't use sense!
Aosp is fast for sure. Sense roms have better battery now IMO. But aosp will catch up.

Exactly the words I had in mind.Even the alternative camera apps in the Market don't quite satisfy me.
But people,it's AOSP camera, not CM7 camera.CM has nothing to do with it.Although we can all agree it sucks anyway.
Um, yeah and its an AOSP camera. Just like everything in CM7 is AOSP. Just like everything has been modified, including the camera.
I think that warrants justification enough to call it 'CM7' camera.

[Q] Which custom ROM is best?

I am waiting the official ICS rom but I dont think I still have enough patient. So I decided to flash custom ROM. Can anyone recommand one? Stable is better. And is there a customer ROM can improve camera performance?
Me too
I was about to ask this too. There has been a lot of movement on the ICS front recently. Is it suitable for daily use now and which ROM will give me stability and most features (at least 2D camera and not bothered about FM)? Thanks
I'm currently on LeeDroid 5.4
I think the rom virtuos 3.0.2 is the best!

the cam is good, bluetooth works well and looks like the original version to be released!
Good for everyday use!
also expect other opinions!!

I personally prefer AOSP (CM) ROMs, but as of now there's a couple of compromises in functionality to be made.
When I use Sense Roms, I like stability and performance Drops's or MikeyXda's Roms are usually my choice.
That said, this last leak is really stable and ICS performs really smoothly, so most Roms run fine

im currently using newts one s rc3 and trust me..once you go to sense 4 you can't go back.
sure 3d camera doesnt work (2d does and front facing) and the wimax doesnt work yet, but the rom is SMOOTH AF. im loving the improved autocorrect upgrades and the look and feel of sense 4.0.
i'd recommend it over any other ics rom atm
Pretty much any Rom based on the official leak is nice and stable. I'd suggest you try out virtuos, king cobra, and mwakious. Run each of them for a day and just stick with the one you like best. Also anryl's Rom I heard is nice (but I haven't tried it yet)
Edit: also all of these roms are fully functional. Full working camera and nice battery life

MeanROM ICS is sooooo smooth and constantly being updated/tweaked! I'm running it while waiting for a more fleshed out AOSP rom.

Yes it does, and although there are frequent updates you don't HAVE to update always. But its so much fun.. You can "dirty flash" the updates which is a breeze and leaves all your data intact so its pretty quick and painless

[Q] XenonHD

I'm fairly new to xda. I love the Rom so far. Not as quick or stable as revolutionhd but I do notice xenon has a much better battery life. Could be a trade off for performance. The one thing I wish was for the camera to remain stock and not change to cm. Is there anyway to go back to stock camera?

Question about the best rom

thinking about rooting and installing ROM][09/09/2013]M7WLV Port is ths rom TOTALLY BUG FREE??
I've been using it for a few weeks now and haven't found a problem yet.
I'm not sure that any of the Rom's are totally bug free. Most of the sense based ROMs are pretty good! I'm not a big sense user but the ones I have tried work really well.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Cool thanks guys
There is no "best" ROM. Every ROM is great, as we have some rockin' awesome devs. It just boils down to preference.
Sense based:
Software designed for our hardware, less bugs, not many features, but things just.... Work.... You want to stay sense but want a metric S*** ton of features? Try Viper DNA, if you want a little less features, try NOS.
AOSP based:
Made for all iterations of Android devices, more prone to bugs, limited by software (I noticed AOSP camera compared to Sense on this device is a joke IMO, as Sense camera is MADE for this brand of phone, AOSP is made for a plethora of devices). You get nice features with no loss of performance (to a degree). With AOSP you get that Stock Android feel Google intends without OEM putting their skin on top of it.
It really boils down to the features you want, and the way you want your phone to act. Some Roms fly, some don't. It all is just the nature of the beast. Best to try a few out, just be sure to search that ROM's thread for any bugs, reviews, and features.

i've been running it for a while pretty bug free lol, i also run viperdna also pretty bug free, depends on what im feeling, clean stock vs super customization
ABFP (Android Bug Free Project). Just kidding. Anyway, Sense ROMs definitely have the least bugs, but the AOSP ROMs are pretty good too, mostly everything works. I suggest you give the Google Play Edition ROM a try though, It's got all the benefits of being a sense-based ROM but it feels like pure AOSP. It doesn't have all the cool features of the real AOSP ROMs though.
Sent from my Droid DNA using Tapatalk Pro
My answer to this question is simple.. Though there are many great roms based on AOSP, they are all based on the CM 10.2 source.. For me, there are still too many bugs that I consider to be showstoppers ... I love AOSP and always will.. but I've been running Sense 5 since Joelz released just the rom OP is asking about.. now I've moved to Venom since I'm a tester and it frankly just works. Battery life is good, performance.. etc. It's all there.. I think there is a strange issue with Skype, but I don't use it.. those that do I feel bad, especially those that use it for phone calls, Venom will fix it.. just in time. :good: ... But honestly, this question can't be answered by anyone but you. Flash all the roms available, give them 3 days each.. operate like you normally do on your phone and see.. Really the only way.. But the most 'bug fee' will always be on Sense based roms.. :highfive:
Running gpe right now because I needed to use viber. With xposed it looks just like any other aosp rom. Maybe I'm just biased, but it doesn't feel as snappy as the proper cm/aosp roms.
