Problem with my phone - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

So I just bought this phone on ebay and right now it's on Gingerbread 2.3.4, So I decieded to update it to Jelly Bean via kies. When I plug it into Kies, it just says connecting for a long time and then says Your device isn't compatible with kies 2.0. Also, I have noticed that the IMEI number says unknown. is it suppose to do that when the phone isn't activated? and how can I fix the kies issue and update to Jelly Bean?

Sounds like the phone you purchased has a bad or generic imei. Maybe that is the reason it was sold on ebay? Anyway, you can probably not recover the original imei, and may have to use it with a generic imei. You will probably have to flash the latest stock firmware via Odin.

Did the description of the item on ebay say that there was a problem with the imei? If so and you bought it anyway you won't be able to return it. Otherwise I would just follow creepys advice and hope for the best

Look in the Download Repository; the link is in my signature. All the stock firmware are there, the latest one is at the very bottom.

I had a different problem with updating through KIES, but all the same, Odin flashing is the best way to go.
Have you all got the latest version of Kies? I believe there was a sizeable update recently. I can't really advise more than that as I get updates from here and use Odin.

Same problem, that I am facing. Latest kies as well. Seems like kies is the worst software ever designed in the history of mankind.
Any simpler way to update the phone. Does ODIN require root?

Phone repaired, did they root my phone?

I posted this question in another thread, though I never got a direct answer and didn't want to hijack the thread either.
A while back I had my phone repaired. I've never attempted to update my phone in all this time. I recently installed Kies and saw the following information:
PDA:KE1 / PHONE:KE4 / CSC:KD1 (XEU)
It says "This version of the device cannot be updated".
When I tried the "software update" via the phone, which then said a new firmware would have to be installed and if I'd like to download. I selected Yes and then the phone reboots. When it came back on it said that the update had failed and to try connect and do it through KIES. So I think there's an update available yet I can't do anything about it?
My phone details are:
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9100XXKE4
Kernal Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE1-CL181974
[email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWKE1
Does the information from the Kernal Version indicate that they rooted my phone when they repaired it? If so, will there be a way of changing it back?
Thanks.
Does hboot say s-off or s-on?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
no they will not root your phone as you are using kies to get official updates.
use odin and flash either generic roms which you will have to root yourself.
custom roms usually are rooted by the developer.
Does the information from the Kernal Version indicate that they rooted my phone
NO all its says is [email protected] which is part of the signature and nothing to do with rooting a phone ..
If Kies says no update for your phone then its usually correct .Phone provider has not updated firmware .

I never used Kies until now and the phone wasn't updated before sending it back to be repaired. I don't really have the intention of rooting the phone myself. Was just wondering why I can't update the firmware.

Kies says there's no update, however I'm asked to use Kies after a failed attempt to use the software update function of the phone. It says that there's a new firmware version available. I downloaded it and it asks to reboot my phone. When it starts up again it says the update has failed and to use Kies. I don't understand why it would say there's a new firmware available and yet I can't update it?

If the phone isn't rooted by them, why won't the software update allow me to update the new firmware that it says is available? It fails and asks me to do it through Kies where it says that my version of the phone cannot be updated?

Dude... You keep asking the same question. Although I cannot say why your phone is telling you that you have an update available and it is failing and saying to use KIES, I can reiterate what JJE mentioned and that is that it sounds like your carrier has NOT released an actual update for your device.
I recommend that you call your cell phone carrier and ask them if and when an update WILL be available and start from there. If they say that there IS an upadte available then you can ask your question again but until you know for sure you are just going around in circles.
the csc you have does cuurently support updates has they have not been released for that region.
try changing the csc to a country that has updates.

Kies will not upgrade my note

I have a rooted ATT Note. I ran Kies to upgrade my firmware to ICS but it reports "Your device firmware cannot be upgraded through Keis". I'd like to try using Odin but I can not find where to get the firmware file. Can anyone point me to it?

This will do the trick. The issue is with the modem file when you rooted...and Kies is not liking it. This will upgrade you to the official AT&T ICS unrooted release;

Used the process in the link above and worked liked a charm...
a couple comments:
The process is the emergency firmware recovery procedure....
No need to take the battery out to get Sn & Model. Just go into your Settings>About Phone>Status>
You will have to re-root your phone

OTA update proposed on my rooted XWLP7 - what is it ?

I am very suprised to have been offered an OTA update - as I had flashed a firmware myself.
I was expecting, that with an unbranded flashed firmware, I would never receive an OTA update.
Am I wrong?
The details:
I flashed a few months ago XWLP7 via Mobile Odin pro, and I am rooted.
The phone itself was purchased sim-free & unbranded, my 3g provider is vodafone uk - pay mothnly.
XWLP7 was taken from the official ICS leaked firmware thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
would at least try to understand if the proposed update is the recent I9100XWLPT
but don't know ho to figure out what the update is.
Also, I would prefer to use ODIN pro again rather than doing an offical update and maybe lose root.
please advise!
thanks!
Yes, the corect regional update is probably LPT.
You will lose the root anyhow, even if you flash with Odin or directly via Wi-Fi.

Why not just flash the latest I9100XWLPT rather than flashing that and loosing root?
I just flashed the LPT and I didnt lose root.Maybe someone can add what the "everoot" function is in mobile odin pro.
I think I lost cwm but I got it back with siyah 3.5 flash.

thanks - I did not accept the update and flashed I9100XWLPT with Mobile Odin Pro directly.
as usual, it worked great and did not lose root.
cheers
I also got this update but didn't accept as I heard that Samsung were pushing updates out which removes the search function when holding the menu button because they lost a law suit with Apple or something.
It could just be a rumour but I didn't want to risk it.
Does XWLPT still have the search function?
Also does XWLPT have the hard brick bug?
Cheers!

You can download the 'got brick bug' app from chain fire to check.
Until then I wouldn't do a factory reset or wipe just to make sure
I tried the same update and its just as crap as the older one-and more laggy.Maybe its because Im liking rr3 performance.

Apparently there is a risk of bricking your phone if you have the brick bug and you use Mobile Odin so I wouldn't risk it.
If you're using a Mac you can use Heimdall, it's similar to Odin

What is the original stock firmware my phone came with before flashing?

A simple question but i couldn't find the answer. I flashed my i9300 but i have no idea weather it came with UK, Dutch or Dutch Vodafone firmware. Is there any way to find this out?
Als is there any way a service center can look it up through your serial number or imei?
A similar thread about this for the I9100 / SII went unanswered.

If you dont know then outside of asking Samsung all you can do is guess .
Some say Kies will give original firmware .Tools Firmware upgrade and initialization .
jje
Why don't you flash one that's for your country? It doesn't matter for Samsung warranty if that's the case because once it's their software they don't ask questions.
Mine came with a Dutch firmware, it's a 32 GB and I flash Cyanogenmod over it.
Try http://androidfirmwares.net and look for Galaxy S3 Roms.

After i rooted and then updated through Kies, it did reset the Device status from modified to normal, but let's not confuse that with getting the firmware of the original locale/provider. Kies update didn't change the firmware. So either i already had the original firmware, or it just updates.

That's very reassuring and just what i wanted to hear
The reason i'm not sure what the original firmware is, is that in the past, two of my preordered android phones had UK firmware (probably because the UK shipped a few weeks earlier). On top of that this is my first phone with a contract (subsidized) but from a website (gsmweb) rather than the provider. So the firmware could be UK, Dutch or Dutch Vodafone afaik...
Either i have the right firmware, or Kies just reads the current firmware, not the origingal. If i ever flash another firmware, i'll check if Kies still says this (Dutch, unbranded) is my original firmware.

LH1 is a recent firmware so if your phone is older than a few months its not the original .
((Some say Kies will give original firmware ))
like i said some say that .
But i have no evidence that they are not getting a Kies report based on the HDSWVER in the windows registry .I could test as i know my original firmware but KIES is not a product i use .
