Hi everybody. So, I've had my S3 since April.. it was a birthday gift. I love it and baby it as if it were my own child.. yesterday I had taken my Otter Box Commuter case off to take out my battery because my phone had restarted itself, but had been stuck in some odd boot loop. So wah lah, took the battery out and put it back in and Bob's your uncle it fired right up. Normal.. now I've only dropped it twice in the past three months I've had it and well, nothing had happened to it, except for some minor scuffs on the back casing.. yesterday, being the second time I've dropped it, hit the concrete pretty bad but on the back side only.. it may have impacted a corner of the phone though but never flipped on the screen side. Well I immediately put my case on after going back in the house and today, actually just about 30 minutes ago, im just scrolling down my Facebook page and I feel and hear a click sound.. at this point I was just thinking my case had shifted or moved in some way but I started looking at my Facebook again and there is now a crack going from about the middle right side of my screen curving up towards the top left all the way to the bezel of the phone just beside the LED.. Now come on.. I know we all make mistakes, but I didn't really expect my screen to crack this early.. especially for the price I paid for this device. Has anybody had this happen to them before, and if anyone could point me to a good screen replacement place it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.. ps, the top glass or screen is all that cracked.. The LCD and Digitizer seem to be OK.

There are guides to replace the screen only but it's fairly involved and requires things like heat guns. Obviously it voids warranty but having an international version in US means you probably have no warranty at all.
The unit is often sold with screen but you can buy the glass only but you'd want to get a professional to do it I'd say,
Now when you're asking to recommend a good "Screen replacement place" what do you mean? You want us to recommend a shop? Not really knowing anythign about where you are, it's unlikely we can do that. Any descent repair shop / service centre should be able to help.
Please be aware, the general section is not the place for support threads. Should be in Q&A. I've reported the post to be moved.
I have read about the screen replacement and using a heat gun so yes I will have somebody who knows what they're doing get ahold of it. Do you know any long term effects of using a phone with a cracked screen are? Like other damages that could occur? Besides the glass cracking even more than it already is.. Thanks for the reply though, and sorry about the post in the wrong area..
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Theres a digitiser under the glass somewhere so it's possible to pierce that after some time if the glass gives. It's obviously weaker now. I would definitely recomend getting it changes ASAP.
Alright . Thanks for the suggestions.

I have been EXTREMELY careful with this phone, yet i managed to see a scratch on the screen as i pulled it out of my pocket. I'm still in my 30 day period and was wondering if at&t would take it back and exchange it for a new one...
I would suggest you contact the company where you bought the phone. But i think you can Imagine what their answer will be. But not all hope is lost. Nowadays you can replace phonescreens pretty cheap if you do this yourself or by someone else.

If you go back and replace your phone because of a microscratch on your screen, you're likely to get some very cross looks from the rep you speak with, and may not even get the exchange.
Now, I don't typically condone lying, but as one of the people who will potentially get screwed over by AT&T's new 5% rule in October... If you go back and complain about the battery or a "sluggish and laggy" phone, you'll probably get in and out quick and painless. But... Like I said before I don't condone lying, so I'm officially washing my hands of this thread

And once again we see why our insurance rates and deductibles keep going up!
You scratched your phone..............it's not indestructible..............deal with it like the majority of us do instead of trying to scam a replacement for something which you did yourself!

I've had to replace two Atrix's so far, once because the housing was "loose" (probably manufacturing) and I called to see if there was a way to fix it myself and they said to just replace it. The second time was because the micro usb port was messed up (kept reading as if it was plugged in) so I brought it in and I was able to replicate the problem. Both times I had the phone back to them within 48 hours and both times the issue was physically apparent and replicated.
This is also an issue because a lot of us wanted an unlock-able bootloader but it was thought that many people who should not be "modding" their phone was going to try and probably take advantage of the warranty if they messed it up. This is just another version of that and it makes the argument harder for the rest of us that say we will take responsibility for our actions.
Put a screen protector on it and it won't get scratched. If the screen protector gets scratched get a new one.
Try putting a screen protector on it and see if the scratches are visible. They don't seem noticable to me. And no you can't repair with scratch remover cream. at least I didn't have much luck.
Another option buy the screen from ebay and repair it yourself. Not hard to do. I replaced mine after fallling from top of second story apartment building balcony on to the side walk. With otterbox impact case.

The answer is no ill tell you why
it cannot be returned any device with liquid or physical damage cannot be exchanged or returned... but it really depends on the scratch
He said he is still in the 30 day period, all he has to do is take it back to the store and they will exchange it for a new one.

On my iphone, I used automobile finishing tools to get a HUGE scratch out of my iPhone. I have not tried it yet on my Atrix, but are not they both made of Gorilla glass. Specifically, I used Meguir's #2 (like liquid sandpaper) followed by #9. Worked AWESOME to remove the scratches.
Gorilla glass is totally overrated. IMHO grab a couple of cheap eBay screen protectors before it's too late.
If anything, buy and use them for the peace of mind alone...

wow ...never heard of anyone getting a scratch repaired or buffed out...I don't believe you can....its not a tv where the glass could possibly get smooth out or buffed.....under that light film is many electroids that make current for the touch....the ditigizer.....do u have insurance on it?.....and have that film that came on the phone stock?.....say it don't charge or ssomething...put the film back on and send it out.. lol....that's what I try...what's the worst it happen....say it got damaged in shipping....lol....it will get placed on a self till a tech gets a work order to fix it by then..it will be forgotton and you'll have a replacement....these screens have issues anyways I look at it that way......lol blacks are grey....
Im wondering if one of the scratch removing liquids would work.? I think they sell it at hardware stores, its sold as a car windshield scratch remover...
depending how deep and big the scratch is filling it with liquid glass fixer...would he loose touch in that area?...how big is the scratch anyways and how deep you think?
edit...there is a liquid filler and scratch fixer for acrylics we used to at work...it goes on liquid and dries clear...for minor cracks but that depends how bad it is,then we would buff the scratch out..but I don't know if that work on these screens..might cause more harm then good..
I've got the Best Buy Black Tie coverage but as silly as it seems, they will only take it back if the screen is completely cracked. Plus, I just got done modding the heck out of this thing so I'd like to keep it. The scratch is deep enough to feel with your finger nail and can be easily seen in the right angles. It's annoying enough that I stare at it. Ive already tried polishing compound for car paint and seen no improvement. Someone told me there are kiosks at the mall where watch repair people fix watch faces. It sounds like a good idea but after reading a post by a guy who redid his Captivate screen, I'm not so hopeful.

Try going back to AT&T store and see if they'll swap it for you since you're still in the first 30 days. I traded my black Note for a white one, just had to pay $35.
A cotton cloth and toothpaste or metal polish will get it out after many hours of rubbing.
Almost any screen protector over top should instantly improve the look and feel.
The Touch Digitizer Screen cover is hard to get now at a good price, but they will most likely drop to $50 before too long.
Hey all,
So my parents bought me a US AT&T SGII(not skyrocket) mid October, a couple of days after it came out, and I have loved it ever since. Anyway, yesterday I dropped my phone and the screen cracked pretty badly. There's like a shatter pattern in the bottom right and one long crack going diagonally across the middle.
Are there any suggested routes for getting the screen replaced or repaired... or really any ideas in general?
P.S. As far as I know there is only the default manufacturers warranty which I don't think would cover cracks this bad. I don't believe there is any insurance on this phone or anything like that.
Thanks for your help!
From what I've read, it's around 200 for a new screen.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
First of all I'm sorry that is your is crack. Like mentioned before you are going to have to play 200 plus for the screen. If you don't have insurance then I suggest that its best to replace the phone its. Most local shops that replace screens will tell you that they wouldn't replace it. Screen plus labor your looking at roughly 300 bucks. That's about the price of a new phone.

I dropped my phone a couple days ago, tried to not pay it any mind. It was inside a slippery pocket and I took off my coat to turn it inside out for the rain and the phone went with it, OF COURSE. Did a quick inspection, everything looked fine so I pocketed it and went on my way.
This morning I was surveying my phone near my bedside window and I caught this weird glimpse of an arch so I tried to rub it away thinking it was a smudge.
Tilted the phone a little more and noticed that it's actually the plate behind the glass. So fragile. </3
I didn't get insurance, so I could probably go sign up then come back a couple days later and act like "OH NO!!"? Or should I just get a case and call it good? The crack isn't noticeable unless you tilt the screen and stare at it for a moment, and there aren't many moments where I or myself is staring at the back of it. Performance doesn't seem to be altered either.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
My guess is that performance won't be affected.
However, cracks tend to grow. It may be small now, but it likely will get bigger, unless you're lucky enough that both extremities of the crack are headed towards the bezel. Your call, but with it being on the back, and if you're getting a case, I would deal with it personally. Not having insurance sucks.
Also, trying to get ins on it now is not a horrible idea. Particularly if the damage is tough to see. Florescent lights are horrible for seeing those defects, the sun is much better.
Edit: one letter of grammer

Well the crack is heading from the bottom and arches up to the side. I'd take a picture of it but I only have my phone's camera and it might be a little difficult to even get a picture of the crack with a mirror. So I assume it couldn't grow any more from that. (I hope.) I'm buying a few silicone cases right now. :x
Edit: managed to get a picture of it with my webcam. See that?
sorry to hear...
this is the first phone i bought insurance for.
hopefully my Belkin bumper and Zagg kit will be in by the 27th so i can some level of protection on it. but would either have been able to prevent an impact fracture like that? i kinda doubt it. the bumper should make a it a bit less slippery at least.
i'd get insurance, while you can, if you're going to keep the device for a couple years i'm sure you'll have a good reason to call it in before all is said and done. either due to physical damage from being dropped one too many times or heck, just to replace the non-replaceable battery.
NOTE: BestBuy insurance = $10/mth over 24mths OR $170 if paid up front.
At first I wasn't considering insurance, but now I am definitely going to get it after seeing the crack. So when I get it, will I be able to play off the situation of my phone or will they look at it first and determine that it can't be replaced without a fee? I feel like I should've put this in Q&A with all the questions I have. :x Didn't think I had so many. Just wanna make sure so I don't **** myself over lol.
I am not sure how they will proceed as far as wanting to see the phone first. I wish you all the best with it !!
If they won't do it, some people have said that by putting a screen protector on it that usually keeps the crack from spreading. ( I noticed it is on the back, it should still work) Regards.
The crack isn't on the Gorilla 2, it's across the plate beneath it. So I'm hoping it just stays as is and doesn't fracture any further.

We've all been there, done that. If they got a dollar for everytime they tried selling someone insurance to go with their phone but that person said "it's fine. i won't drop it", they'd be able to retire. I've been one of those people. Which is actually why I'm on this phone now instead of my Galaxy S3 haha
Good luck. One thing that bugs me is often the insurance doesn't cover drops.
If you can get best buy insurance I'd go for it. The only thing they don't cover is lost or stolen I hear.

They might help you out with insurance at best buy. If not, you'd need to get something like square trade of zagg warranty or a competitor. Att insurance is a joke, 7.50/mo with a $200 deductible.

My thread isn't about scamming insurance, it was asking if I should ignore it and get a case or get the cases plus insurance so I'd be protected from further harm to my phone. Being snarky to posters because I asked for suggestions is unnecessary. I've never bought insurance for a phone before, and it just so happens that since there's a small crack I can't have insurance at all. Wonderful.

Maybe I'm old, (I am) but I always thought forums were about a community for help and support and a way for people with like minded interests to come together. If that's the case I imagine I should just stay a lurker taking advantage of the developers Roms and not offering any input or help to others.
Bit of a sad world we live In if this is how we now define a community.
Guess I just still live in a different time.
I believe. I've had the same issue with Samsung and Other companies in the past. Just one of those things that can happen during assembly. Good thing is that they will replace it because it's a manufacturer defect.
Anyway thanks for the heads up. Good to know to look for this when I go get mine on the 10th.

My replacement is scratched up as well.. wtf
Same problem here. About half a dozen small hairline scratches in mine (128GB black). Not a huge deal, but I'm paying almost a grand for this phone, so I want it to be perfect.
Got a replacement coming, so hopefully it's alright. If not, I may just exchange it for the normal S6. Might be a manufacturing problem with the curved screen.
There is another thread in the general section with several people reporting the same problem. Not sure if samsung or tmobile is to blame but it is clearly a problem.
My phone actually had scratches on the back and light bleed by the bottom left corner. Im on the phone with tmobile but they are telling me the system wont recognize my phone's imei, possibly due to the phone not being officially released yet. They want me to order a new phone and return this one, and I will be credited. Wtf how are you guys getting phones overnighted? Too late. I was just so frustrated that I followed their instructions. I ordered one with next day shipping and was told my original order would be completely refunded, including shipping costs. So it will be a wash in the end, but I probably won't get the new phone until tomorrow and I am not sending this one back until I get the other one.
I will say that my phone came with a small scratch by the multitasking button but at this point I don't care. I was mad at first but I hate calling to complain.
My 32GB black one came yesterday (4/2) with overnight shipping and it had a couple of scratches on the screen and top bezel. Not deep enough to affect viewing on the display but noticeable when the screen is off and you see the phone in certain angles under lights.
Like the previous poster mentioned, the scratches are not all in one direction or in a pattern. Mine happen to go diagonally on different parts of the phone. I am guessing it is because the plastic front and back glass protector it ships in is not fully attached to the phone. It's like a plastic sleeve with a open top and bottom so the phone has a little room to slide around against the plastic as the box is thrown around delivery trucks. Mine came in a shipping envelope instead of a box so even the box with the phone in it had room to move around as it went through UPS.
These initial scratches are not a deal breaker for me for now though. The more concerning part is that it appears there has been no improvement in terms of anti-scratching/Mohs scale with Gorilla Glass 4. So my concern is how the phone will hold up over time without a screen protector if it was scratched so easily before I even got it.
