Lately my phone has been dropping signal for no reason. I don't get a blank signal bar I get a circle with a line thru it somewhat like a circle stop sign. Had sim card replaced and issue still remains. Wondering if it is a sim card holder issue. Anyone else heard of an issue like that?

Not a sim card or holder issue. It would give a written error above the softkeys asking you to insert a sim, and there would be a sim card icon at the top left.
That symbol usually means a bad APN setting or you entered a dead zone.

Is there a fix for this? Would going back to a fresh stock system and factory reset fix that?

Phone signal has nothing to do with APN.
Issue solved turned out to be a bad antenna. Replacement on the way.

That can't be replaced. I have another phone coming from carrier. If you have a bad antenna call your carrier cause it can't be fixed. I went to 4 shops all said same thing

The antenna module (wifi, gprs, data, gps) has been known to become dislodged after a good fall. Its next to the power button. Perhaps try to squeeze it in? I know its a longshot, but a few xda members were able to regain the signal after trying that.
I like my sleek note .... With my case its a huge beast ... But I guess its worth saving

I'm with you. Since mobile phones were in briefcases I switched to every new model that came along. I am constantly suprised I have had the same phone for more than two years. Even though some nice stuff has been released, those phones don't overall beat this phone in my opinion.

These pictures are of i9100, but we have this part too.
Looking at the second picture it seems to be some kind of antenna but disconnected.
Source
Its the antenna that connects to the contacts on the back of the battery cover.
I cam over from Captivate. It had one of those too. I think I remember reading that someone had found that it was for some kind of external antenna but then I think he said it ended up screwing up his phone pretty bad. You might be able to find it in the Captivate forum. I'll see if i can.

But there are no contacts on the battery cover... are there different battery covers for this phone on the market?

Thanks for that! That's answers my question.
It's a factory test connector - 50%+ of people who try to use it wind up permanently damaging their phone. There's a tiny little switch in there that disables the built-in antenna, and it's easy to damage this switch and get it stuck in the "no internal antenna" state.
Its the LTE antenna.
then how come we dont have LTE?

Really? I remember in Captivate it was a ground connector, not an athenna.
Also shouldn't LTE athenna be part of the cellular athenna in bottom? (Moreover we dont have LTE baseband...)

Go to your message app then settings. You'll find it in emergency alerts I believe. Turn them on or off there.

Everyone is right, this is a new type of alert that the FCC is starting to use across the nation. It is supposed to alert you of anything that may harm a population.
To turn it off, go to your stock messaging app. Go into settings, and scroll all the way to the bottom. Click "Emergency Alerts" and uncheck any that you don't want. The only alert you cannot opt of is the Presidential Alert. Also, you do NOT get charged for anything.
Also, does anyone know if you will still get this alert if you do not use the stock messaging app? I'm using goSMS.
I have gotten the alert twice in the last week, once while driving in a severe thunderstorm in Connecticut and the second time today during a severe thunderstorm in New Jersey.
Both times the alert was for a Flash Flood Warning. Are these the only ones currently going out? I actually wouldn't mind alerts for Severe Thunderstorms, but I have not seen any.
Also, you will still get the messages in GoSMS. They show up as coming from "#CMAS#Severe".
Thank you!
The FCC has said about the alerts is that you will get an alert for:
1. Alerts issued by the President
2. Alerts involving imminent threats to safety or life
3. Amber Alerts
I think severe thunderstorm warnings would at least be covered - I'm not sure about watches though. From what the FCC said, it makes it seem that they warnings would at least be covered, since severe thunderstorms can definitely pose "imminent threats to safety or life."
My S3 yesterday died on me. It was on charge over night and in the morning when I woke up it was turned off and just refused to turn back on again.
I'm taking it back to the shop today but before I do I was wondering if there was any way of wiping the data off it before handing it over? I just don't fancy the thought of some random guy having access to all my files and photos. Not that there is anything bad on there

This happened to me once and it turned out to be the battery and not the phone. If you have a friend who happens to have an S3 as well, may want to try and swap the battery out with them and see if that makes a difference. If not, then service center and warranty are your only option.

Already tried that in the shop but it didn't work. I'm going back today to hand it in as their systems were down yesterday so couldn't book my phone in
I think you don´t need to be concerned about that, it happens to me with S2 and that was the board that burned and possibly even samsung will be able to read the data. And normaly they don´t care about that they just simply will replace your board and everything will be fine again.

Tear your phone down and hit the part with yellow borders on the image with a solid object. Your memory is now wiped.
So I'm going crazy... My phone screen seems to be going out and I brought my phone into sprint twice now... They tell me the phone does not show any of the problems when they have the phone. They treat me like I'm crazy.. It kind of ridiculous. I'm not hanging out at the spring store because I'm board... The phone screen keeps going in and out and almost makes the unusable... This is what I get..

Should I ***** more keep trying different stores?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I'm not sure what you're showing here, but I suggest when going into the store showing the rep you first talk to your issue. Before, they take it for the folks in back. You've got to have someone there back you up before the tech sees it.
Sorry the pictures are of the phones touch screen test. I spoke with the manager... And the issues come and go so just showing them the issue is the issue. I can't make it do it on command. The phone will be fine for a few hours and then go out again... That's why it's so frustrating.

If i had it on my s4 and you have 3 different phones all with the same problem it's probably t mobile, and like the previous commenter said, the nexus 5 also had this problem

I have this too, here i thought i was deleting too much bloat from the system. But apparently not. IMO, i think its Android 4.4.2 and T-Mobile. I had this issue happen on all 4.4.2 ROMs even on my S4. It didn't happen until i flashed the 4.4.2 ROMs. So I think T-Mobile may have made a mistake in their coding when making the update. Lets see what the next update will bring. I wonder how we could even bring up this issue to them because i guarantee you they will claim its the device.
Don't remember because i have been on 4.4.2 forever, and i can't check because theres no other option besides for buggy aosp, but there have been a few updates within 4.4.2 like NF6 which added VoLTE...
Btw if this is a common problem something should be done... This really f*king sucks
