[Q] Broken Screen, Recovering Files without USB Debugging turned on - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My S3 I9300 screen is completely broken (blank) and I want to recover my photos. I can turn on the phone and it makes all the usual noises therefore indicating that it is working.
I have downloaded the Unified Toolkit from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
But it seems that I need USB Debugging turned on for me to do anything with the phone - but this is impossible without a working screen...
I can blindly boot the handset into recovery mode - this results in Windows recognising the device (a device with no folders appears in explorer), and so does the Unified Toolkit (serial number is displayed).
Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can proceed? Are there any other tools that I can use? Is it possible to turn on USB debugging some other way?
Cheers

pull the files via adb while in recovery. find a guide if you don't know how

The unified toolkit will handle adb pull files. Option 11 in main menu if I'm not mistaken

Well, maybe you can try pull out the memory card from you S3 I9300 phone, and then recover files from memory card.

The whole point is that they're on the internal memory.

If your phone has a broken screen, you may try to recover data from phone with this tutorial: Recover data from phone whose screen is broken
hope this helps.

The sdcard is the built-in 16gb storage.
In the guide you will see external sdcard too, that's the optional card
which is a removable one.
so just to clarify i don't need a SDcard to root if im following the guide that's stickied?

Looks like you are not using the Samsung Unified USB driver.
Try this one, this is what I use.
Here is the Samsung Unified USB driver: http://api.viglink.com/api/click?for...13196871580881
Be sure to uninstall kies if it's installed and uninstall any other samsung usb driver,
then reboot windows before installing the unified samsung drivers.
Good Luck!

Do you have the newest KIES installed? I think I read in another thread where someone else experienced this same problem and it finally got corrected when they installed the newest version on their PC.

NEWBIE - Galaxy SII smashed screen -copy data with ADN? (phone not rooted)

Hi all
Thanks to those who replied though it would be nice if the post was fully read first... for example, I cannot just connect the phone and copy its content via USB!
Here's the problem:
- phone screen is smashed and shows nothing
- phone still powers up though
- it is not rooted
- it has data on its internal memory that I want to copy
- it has pattern lock activated
- computer (MS Vista OS) recognises a USB devise is logged in, but it doesn't read it as a drive, and KIES just idles... no doubt because I would need to change the phone settings, which I can't do with a smashed screen.
QUESTIONS:
- How can I access phone contents to copy them? (repair shop wants $220)
- I was told using ADN....
I installed SDK Tools but how do I start ADN?
Many thanks
the easiest way might be connect to your computer and copy the contents of the internal sdcard if your computer sees the phone.
If you wan to use odin, use file dump to dump the contents of your phone i believe.
I'm quite the noob when it comes to adb scripting, but I believe that
- start a command line within the directory where ADB executable is located
- type in "adb usb" and it should connect to your phone
- then type "adb pull /mnt/sdcard/* X:\path-to-directory\"
commands without parentheses... I hope it will work
Thanks for the replies
I just amended my original post to say the computer does not recognise the phone when USB connected... KIES tries to connect but fails (no doubt because there is no response from the phone).
Did you try and connect it through mass storage?
Settings - Wireless and networks - USB utilities.
Also try uninstalling kies and reinstall

adb is it!
open a adb shell if you need to navigate around to where things are..
then do a adb pull to get the stuff you want.
Oh yeah, forgot about that, haha. Sorry.

[Q] [Help] Broken screen - need to recover pictures

Hi,
Can some please help me to recover photos from my broken S3? I want to download them to PC and then delete before I give it to repair.
My Galaxy S3 dropped, there is a small crack visible in the corner and the screen is completely black. Phone turns on/off (leds do flash), also when I press main button the 'menu' and 'back' buttons flash. Screen does not display anything and I'm not able to tell if the touch input works.
What I've already tried:
1. Connecting to PC - device is visible but I can't enter internal storage
2. Samsung Kies - does not work as the device is locked and can't unlock it (possible because touch input is broken). Also I can't use 'unlock' option on Samsung page as I can't activate sim card.
3. GALAXY S3 UNIFIED TOOLKIT skipsoft.net/?page_id=213 - does not work, probably because the sdk option is not enabled on S3
I can't tell if it's connecting to wifi - on router there is one device identifying as unknown, probably it's S3.
I've found something about recovery/download mode but don't know how to use it to recover photos (if possible at all).
I would really appreciate any help as I have a lot of photos on my S3.
Thanks,
Mike
If you can't enter the internal storage on your pc, it's because your phone has a lockscreen pattern or code. You could try to draw the pattern on the black screen as the touch might still be working. Another option would be to buy a micro usb to hdmi cable and connect the phone to your tv or monitor.

Faqs have a post regarding recovery of data.
adb and pull it the data out ?, and if you saved the pictures on the SD card just get a reader and pull it from the SD card.
Thanks for replies but it did not work.
1. When connecting S3 to TV I got black screen. Tried with other phone - HTC One S and it's working so my micro usb-hdmi adapter is ok.
2. Tried to draw lockscreen pattern but no luck, touch does not work.
3. Connected even USB mouse to S3 and tried to draw lock pattern - no luck, it's very hard to reproduce it.
4. Also can't do adb as the usb debug is most probably disabled on my phone. Tried all possible troubleshooting found online but still 'adb devices' command gives nothing. Again tried with HTC - works.
I need to extract from internal storage, there is no ext. card.
Any other ideas please? Other than hw intervention like self replacing screen...
Thanks,
Actually you should do adb from custom recovery NOT android.

I've entered recovery mode on S3, now 'adb devices' shows my device. //Edit: what I see is: 4df10efb68e24f99 recovery
I've followed sticky and when doing 'adb pull /data/media/0/ c:\...' or 'adb pull /data/media/ c:\...' I got message that remote object does not exist.
When doing adb pull /data/ c:\... I got message: 0 files pulled. How to find file structure?
//Edit: tried 'adb shell' and then 'adb devices' -> received blank list
Tried 'adb root' -> received "adbd cannot run as root in production builds"
Not really sure what to do next..
//Edit 2: I start to wonder - in the sticky there is: Boot into recovery, connect usb and go to "mounts and storage". Toggle the "mount data" options to mount these partitions. Tip, when mounted, the option then becomes "unmount data"
I don't understand this part: go to "mounts and storage". Toggle the "mount data" options to mount these partitions., where should I do this? Phone screen is dead..

Screen Dead, Must Retrieve Data

My screen is absolutely dead, it was green and I could see a little bit, through the tint but the touch screen wasn't working. I should've used that time to backup all my stuff. Actually, I couldn't. but instead I tried to get it fixed. They said there was some "unsupported" error and it was because my phone was rooted. Didn't make sense to me because he said the screen came on and had that "unsupported" error.
Anyway I've tried the USB cable but I have a gesture password so it doesn't mount.
If I can open AirDroid, I'll even be able to see the screen on my PC, if someone knows a way to open an app. I am unauthorized on ADB though ...or maybe if there was a way to add an authorization key via adb push in CWM recovery, and then use [email protected] or adb to open airdroid!
I have booted to TWRP and mass storage should automatically start as I've heard but it didn't. I went to Download mode and I was able to flash Philz CWM and I tried to use screenshots of CWM online to get to mount USB storage but I couldn't. Please help me out!
I was able to get my dad's GS5 and I flashed Philz on it. I used it as a guide to navigate on my phone but the problem is that the mount USB storage option in Philz only mounts the micro SD card I have in the phone. Maybe if I remove it it will automatically mount sdcard0?
TWRP MTP doesn't work on my computer, so I will try another computer tomorrow. That might do the trick.
If you have access to Samsung smart dock for Note 2 you could be able access phone without working screen. All you need is usb mouse and hdmi cable and tv. With mouse attached normally screen is disabled because is no longer needed for touch input and that should allow for data retrieval. I think your phone has cover over usb connector and that may need to be removed for smart dock to work.

broken screen and touch :(

hi all,
I broke both display and touchscreen on my galaxy s5
I need to recover the photos I have on the phone, can anybody help?
I have both a linux and a windows computer, and the stock samsung firmware on the phone (probably android 4.2)
I was reading online that an option would be flashing the firmware to allow me to enter recovery mode, but wouldn't I lose all photos and the whole content of the phone if I flash it? - I haven't got a Sd card in the phone: all images are stored in the internal memory.
Needless to say I can't get anything by simply connecting the phone to a PC:
- on a windows PC, the phone gets recognized and mounted, but it's seen as empty
- on a linux (mint) PC, I tried with mtp but it tells me "couldnt parse extension samsung.com/devisestatus:1"..
any suggestion on how to proceed? Thanks!

If your screen doesn't turn on after a disastrous fall, don't worry, there is a solution:
Look for [Vysor].
This is a Google Chrome extension that you can download from the internet, really easy to use, just install it on the browser and connect your phone to your computer.
Good luck :good:

Nope. That requires Debugging mode to be activated. And I can't activate it as monitor and touchscreen don't work
