WTF??? A quick Google of SPH-D700 shows that to be the Samsung Epic 4G, which is a Sprint phone. The I9100 is a GSM phone. Sprint is a CDMA network. I hope you're planning on changing carriers if you hope to use the I9100.
Unless you're just confused, and actually ordered a Sprint variant of the Galaxy SII, which is the SPH-D710, or as they call it, the Epic 4G Touch.
Just so I'm clear, the I9100 will NOT work on Sprint's network.
Yea I'm aware that I am on sprint right now. I am aware that the i9100 is GSM, and yes I will be using att.

Hey, I had to check. Some folks just make uninformed decisions and are baffled when the equipment they order doesn't work on their network.
LP6 with my GPS fix works pretty damn well. FM Radio is the only real issue I have encountered. If you want a more ICS experience, push trebuchet or NOVA launcher to /system/app and it will be much better.

It's so popular it's one of those phones - like Desire HD - that's known inside and out Been out in europe for ages, but the US had better carrier specific devices, faster CPUs, etc. At it's core the same device mind.
I was in no rush for ICS but tried WanamLite and all was fine, although the launcher freezes now and then which I put down to a full phone, and an early rom.
This used the CM9 trebuchet launcher. I've got to say almost everything about ICS is cleaner, faster, smoother than previous roms - custom or not. Easy task control, nice display, and little things I still keep discovering like when you connect via USB you get a choice of media device or camera (with the usual USB development option off).
I've had this thing months and must have flashed 50+ roms lol. In the end I stuck with Leomars then the combined Leomar/Checkrom HD because of the kitchen app for easy addons and upgrades.
If youve never used a samsung dont worry, its usually a simple app that will root it and install a recovery console <- very important, cause after that you can flash anything, and as long as you get back to recovery youll be fine. Backup often - complete rom via the recovery (power on, vol down) and a data/app backup with Titanium.
I don't think you need worry about ADB or odin anymore, but if you do just follow instructions on this site...
Your reward? the best phone around esp if the rom you use adds neat things like Jkays extensions, modded apps, kitchens, good theme engine, etc. For pure Android go for AOSP roms, otherwise they're a mish mash of parts.
Change the boot anim if you want, you might get a yellow warning triangle because the sammy knows the roms "illegitimate" but its easily removed.
Finally, should you need to, the stock roms and kernels and modems are here too if you need to get everything back to default, best get them quick as the download sites are dissapearing, or rip yours first before you burn another...
Have fun! You couldn't pick a better handset right now

Just FYI. Bold/Italic/Underlined part is not exactly true. Some of the US carrier specific models have completely different hardware, and have faster clock speeds because they use inferior CPUs.
i got my i9100 today. but i am having some problems trying to get it rooted. using this method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414 when i go to get the insecure kernel my kernel is not listed, and my original kernel is not listed either. So i am not sure if i do this rooting method using any kernel from the list if it will brick my phone or not.
waiting a reply from someone in the threads before i proceed.

From what I can tell, you need the insecure KJ2 kernel. That kernel is no longer directly linked on Odia's insecure kernel page, but there's a link to his Hotfile upload site where all older kernels are stored.

I am officially rooted. Thank you very much. now to get CWM installed!
To cut it short I'm still running GB but recently updated to what I think was the last update before ics ( which still hasn't shown up on my UK sim free handset). But I am figuring that the modem has changed too as my web connection is now useless. So what u am looking for is help with either a modem flash or reflashing back to GB before last GB update. Hope I have explained correctly. Thought I was readying my phone for the ics update and now its pretty much useless. Could be a while answering back ( no internet) tia.

Flashing back to stock
You can always flash back to one of the stock roms:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Or less drastic, grab another modem here to flash:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950
Hope it helps...
Normally I flsh back to stock, hard reset, and format SD before moving to a new rom. I know its probably over-kill, but this way I am sure there will be no left overs from a previous rom I played with.
J
I would have gone for modem only but I haven't a clue which one I was on before the update and there seems an awefull lot :-( . And as for the stock roms, does that mean they were the ones that were on the handsets out of the box. Sorry for all the questions, thought I was doing the right thing and now its a mess. And besides all that how dies it go wrong surely there's only one modem that lies would offer my phone? How can it go wrong.

No stock means Samsung unbranded .
Start by flashing the latest modem and work your way backwards if you do not have a record of your original specifications .
Latest is probably LPR.

I've had no luck with wifi ever since I started trying out ICS builds.
So far I've restricted myself to leaked official builds. The phone just can't hold onto a damn wifi signal even when kept right next to the bloody access point.
Every few minutes it disconnects. Sucks when you're trying to download a huge update for a game.
I don't know if there's an official build out for India, I'm using DDLP8 which was marked as for Nepal. It's definitely stable, but wifi connectivity is totally useless .
I use Wifi Analyzer, and it shows up signal strength as pretty good, using automatic channels, and usually it latches onto channel 11 or 13. My other devices at home have never faced any such problem so it's definitely not a router problem.
Is there anything else to check for?
Edit: I'm using XXLPQ, not DDLP8 (which is the baseband version). My bad.
not familiar of ddlp8 as cant find it as sammobile / intratech
why dont you skip the leaked firmwares and just use the official ones.
also complete wipe your phone flash a GB stock and dont do anything else ...., no root no restores and see if it hold wifi.

It appears DDLP8 is a modem/baseband version. Not the build version. That's why you couldn't find it. But I'm just guessing. OP will have to confirm or deny that.

Yes, you're right. I am using XXLPQ for Nepal, after reading that the official Nepal build works fine on the Indian version of the S2. Sammobile still does not show any official build for India. Does this make a difference?
I saw the problem moments after I had flashed the ROM and rebooted, i.e. with a clean phone set to factory defaults (and rooted) - so I doubt it's due to any other program interfering.

Only for getting "official" updates through Kies. If you don't care about getting updates through Kies, then no, it won't matter.

Wifi drivers are in the kernel, I believe. What method did you use to root? Did you flash a kernel to achieve root? Try flashing a new kernel, or flashing a stock ICS kernel and see if your Wifi still drops after that.
Well, you can also give a try by flashing your baseband/modem itself and see it will be any better. You have few ones in this topic, all flashable via CMW :

I'm fairly certain modem/baseband has NOTHING to do with wifi, so I'll have to disagree with you on the possibility of it fixing his problem.

I could be mistaken (I will admit that), but I have changed modem/baseband and seen no effect on wifi. I have changed kernels, and seen HUGE effect on wifi. So that's just my experience.

Ok, thanks for your links mate, at least i ve learned something. So, he can also give a try by testing different kernels then.
still having issues, you have to do some work..... flashing kernels is not the solution! it should work as is!
1: using cwm format system, cache, data, dalvik
2: flash one of the newer GB Stock Roms get one from intratech, using odin.
3: dont root just see if it works without doing anything, keep it stock. no restores nothing
if it works, it will work on ICS too now.

Well, if you re-read some of the posts above, he said he rooted, but didn't say HOW he rooted. If he rooted by flashing a kernel, then that could be what is screwing with his wifi, depending on WHICH kernel he used. So flashing a different kernel MAY actually solve his problem.
To my experience this problem is most likely related to the kernel you are using. The latest siyah kernel supposingly rectifies this issue. Why dont you give it a try?
I did and saw a big difference...

Maybe its your carrier that either does not support 3g, or u simply cant get 3g comnection from where u live in cause the company u use doesnt push 3g all the way to your area(happens if you live in a place where not many other people live, or far away from town centres and stuff).
Remember to check the options in the more info(right below bluwtooth and data usage in stock rom) insinde the phone settings

3g is not Important in all country except syria, u need 3g when electricity turn off, and to use it in any palace not in closed place like WI-Fi
R: [Q] 3G doesn't work in jellyBean
Damn...i heard u guys in syria are having a really bad time, this stuff must be frustrating.
Well there may be a couple of options:
1)in syria there have been some problems and 3g is not getting really well to ur area anymore
2)your rom is unstable or just stupid(in this case i suggest flashing a good custom rom)
3)youflashing processes may have lead you to flash a rom meant for a nother regional residence(either the stock one u flashed through odin, or something else u flashed), in this case the "modem" of your phone(it's the kinda way your phone gets cellular data...kinda like an antenna kernel but i have no idea what it is just that it controls your antenna receiving/sending connections) might be wrong. Different modems exist according to where u live (or what operator u use i think as well). Try going on the web and looking for a modem that works in syria and try putting it back onto ur phone(i dont know how, look for it on google).

Good kernel: http://www.gokhanmoral.com/
If u flash i through odin get the tar version, if not and u flash it thru recovery get cwm package. Be sure to get the one for galaxy s3. About battery usage...im not sure...because i have a 2800 battery i got off ebay and it makes my phone last a whole lot longer, if u have battery problems in syria (like the power being shut down for a couple of hourse at times) u should get yourself a battery like this as well, it doesnt cost much.
Plus getting a custom rom is best, i wouldnt cound on kernel fixing your problems too much, give rootbox or jellybam a try. Or cyanogen if u wish but i dont thinks its very stable yet.
Also it is smart to get the latest version of your clockworkmod recovery, to do so download off the store the official app called "rom manager", u can use ut to update the recovery.

Aaahhhhh the phone isnt yours...damn that makes it even more difficult to fix the problem, even more so if you know it used to work before, but when u changed rom (or put th same one but with odin) it stopped working. That practically means u HAVE to change rom to make it work.....well try flashing stock rom for rooted devices from somewhere else but its gonna be difficult sorting this out if the owner wont cooperate.
I seriously doubt kernel will make some sort of magical changes...

With the update to 4.1.2, it seems that the Australian version has the bottom icons locked. You can't change them. I've researched this and its only in Australia.... I was pretty pissed off with this, but I thought I could get used to it. Well, I can't.
So being the noob that I am, I thought simply rooting the device would allow me to solve this issue, but it doesn't seem to be that simple.
What I want to do with this phone is to unlock the bottom icons, and get rid of all carrier related stuff (boot animations, apps, etc.). Ideally I want to run pure android 4.1.2, as I'm not a fan of touchwiz, but I tried looking and I couldn't find anything, which is probably down to me being a noob. I wouldn't have a clue how to install it properly either.
So it's a Galaxy S2 I900T
The phone is on Telstra
It has been rooted
It's running stock 4.1.2
If there is anymore info you need to know in order to help me, just let me know and I'll add it.
Thanks in advance!
Well...... You could just run a custom launcher. Search for Nova launcher on the play store. It's the one I use, it's customisable to just about whatever you want.
If you're rooted and do actually want to run stock android instead of just changing the launcher, then look for the index of ROMs in the s2 section. I think GaboWinter is the OP. Look under the AOSP section in there for the stock android ones.
Quick tip, if you do flash a rom you'll have to flash an i9100"t" specific modem or your coverage will be dismal.
Ps. Is it really just the Australian version that can't change the dock icons. How rubbish.

if you want pure android, you'll probably be unable to find 4.1 since it's obsolete in aosp and I'd advise you to go with either 4.2 or even 4.3, as 4.2 especially is highly stable.
also, the guy above me is mistaken about modems, the stock i9100 modems work fine on the t variant, just depends on your carrier which ones you want to use.
to install a rom just flash a recovery image from odin (e.g. Dorimanx or PhilZ) and then copy the necessary zips to your sd, boot to recovery, and flash them
remember to back up your data first though

Just to clarify.... "the guy above you" owns an i9100 and maintains a friend's i9100T. If you mean the international i9100 modem is able to be flashed on an i9100T, I agree. I've done it. I know you also own "T" variant.
What happens in my case is that the data speeds are so dismal you'd be better off using an encyclopaedia than googling something (literally 2Kb/s in some areas. Flashing a "T" specific modem sees the speed jump to 250-300Kb/s or so in the same spot). I'm guessing by your post you have better success than that with i9100 modems on a "t" variant.

No probs mate Odd that you say that, I use XXMS2 /MS3 myself, so naturally tried them on my friend's T variant immediately after rooting. Both modems were dismal and got the 2Kb/s (sometimes hitting 20ishKb/s :0) I mentioned. Now I've got them on DULP4 & no issues at all

oh okay, that's odd
I'm testing dvls3 right now, the Vodafone jb modem, which is a t modem, but normally I run xxms2 or nelp3

Yeah I've flashed dvls3 for them, it wasn't that good. Which is even weirder as they're on vodafone. Eh oh well, not my phone so I can't be constantly testing.
