[Q] Root w/o USB - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a bolt recently for parts, and it turned out being in better condition than my current one.
Only downside to the new one is that the USB port will only charge and not recognize being plugged into PC.
I've seen an app that allows wireless adb w/o root, but it requires you to be plugged in to initiate it...
Just wanted to see if there was any hope for getting root on the thing...

You may just need a different cable, or to use a different USB port on the PC.
May even wanna try a friends/family members PC if yours doesn't have at least one powered USB 2.0 port.
Most likely it's the cable, the port, or lack of drivers on the pc.
If the port gets power to charge, then the port should be fine.

The phone does work great for the most part, but the water damage stickers are bad. I popped it open and the insides look alright, but considering the sticker on the inside is bad too, there may be a chance it messed with one of the pins or something on the micro USB port. It is too small and covered for me to be able to tell if part of it is actually bad. Computer notices something was plugged in (listed as unknown).
As I mentioned, it was listed as a parts phone (claimed to not turn on), but figured I could pull the screen assembly if i cracked another one..
Same result using multiple computers/wires, leaving it to the phone.
I have rooted many of these before using the old adb methods and revolutionary, generally using your ROMs, mainly because they're made with quality and you're one of the only developers this phone has left.
I've been trying to work around the need for the USB cable, but using adb provides the permissions needed to get the files over to the data folder.. I do have ssh access to the phone, but the commands are very limited (no dev mode).

[Q] Cannot connect via USB

So I dropped my phone in the pool while I was on vacation and i used the old rice trick. Now everything works, except I cannot connect my phone to my computer via USB. (I'm running cyanogenmod 7, btw.) when i plug it in, it starts charging, but the "usb connected" and "usb debug" dialogs in the notifications menu does not appear. When i try to tether via usb, it says "USB not connected" This is beyond me.... hahaha. Any suggestions?
might need to order a new charger port. see if you can get it into downloadmode via the good ol battery out battery in vol up/down inset usb trick. bet it wont go into dl mode
Yeah, i tried. No luck. So where can i order a new charger port? and how do I install it?
my charger port is busted too. but i ordered a new port off ebay for about 5 bucks. closest i found was in hongkong and it took like 3 weeks to get here but its here.
take the phone apart and solder the new port in and you should be good.
For someone who's never soldered something in his life? Well, i should probably learn. I'm not paying $50 bucks to have someone else fix it. You know, I might be able to re solder the current charging port.... worth a shot.
i would just order a new port. if you need to get into download mode in the meantime u can use terminal emulator.
su [enter]
reboot download[enter]
that will throw u into downloadmode
thanks. But what's the point if i can't connect? I'm trying to restore to stock JFD using odin (i want to flash a new rom and i want a clean install)... Is there a way to do that over SSH?
have you tried a diff usb cord? usb port? are you using a laptop or desktop?
if ur on a desktop id suggest trying the usb port in the back of your comp
I'm on a laptop, but i've tried it on a desktop, too. I have two USB cords, the one that shipped with my phone and another, longer one. No luck with either cord....
ok this might be off the wall but try this. slowly put the usb in but not all the way. ive noticed vibrants to think its in usb mode sometimes when slowly inserting the usb into the phone.
its an idea and it may work. hope you have steady hands
No dice. Charging indicator came on halfway through, but nothing else. At least that shows that it's definitely a hardware problem.
take the phone apart and look and see if its physical damage. maybe it can be fixed now and not need another usb port but most likely will need a new one
wish i coulda helped

Absolutely no connection between my phone and any computer

So after breaking my original cable, I had it replaced by a regular universal cable that every other phone uses (the mini-usb or whatever) and, I can not get it to connect the two no matter what I do or what computer I use. I'm out of ideas and I don't know where I can get another stock cable. Any help?
It sounds like you just got a charging cable and not a data cable. You can't tell by looking but there is a difference. Plug in the cable and check the battery info. a data cable will show USB charging. You don't need an original cable, just make sure it is the data type.

go to control panel then programs and features
find htc bmp usb driver, htc driver installer, and htc sync
uninstall those three.
go here and download htc sync 3.0 and install.
http://www.htc.com/us/support/rezound-verizon/downloads/
As b5fan stated, the problem is the cable. Your new micro USB cable is a charging cable only. If you buy a data USB cable it will work. Doesn't have to be original.
Best Buy or Verizon are your best options.

Only trouble is that I did exactly that. Went over to Verizon and bought a brand new cable. THAT'S when my phone was no longer visible to my computer, when I tried connection the new cable.
re-installation of the drivers did me no goo. MY phone just reboot itself to the recovery. wtf
so your saying when u plug in your phone and hit usb mass storage in the notification menu it doesn't come up?
well go to the recovery and see if usb mass storage in amonra works

If that doesn't work and your phone & computer are on the same wireless network search for software data cable in the play store. Download filezilla onto your computer and follow the directions in software data cable
Might be far fetched and blatently obvious, but had this happen to me...have you tried shutting down the computer, pull the power cable, press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds to clear any juice in the power supply, plug power cable back in and start it back up.
Don't ask me how that works, or how I came across those steps, but worked for me so far everytime.

That's the problem right there. As two previous posters have stated, you cannot data connect between a computer and your Rezound with a generic Micro USB cable that other devices use. The Rezound (as well as other HTC phones, I think) has a proprietary data/charge cord. Did you notice the shape of the connecting hole on the left side of your phone? It's not a true Micro USB hole, is it? It's a special HTC hole. Granted, you can plug a generic micro USB cord in (in the upside down position) to charge your phone... I do this every morning. However, you need the special HTC cord to get it to connect data to your computer.
My beef is this: why did a Verizon Wireless employee sell you the wrong cord? Take it back and demand an exchange for a proper HTC cord. Have them look at the phone's manual if they need proof. And if the employee gives you any lip about "well, we don't carry that cord in store", then smack him (don't do it if it's a girl) and remind him of the wonders of US postal services and that he can order the dang part from the Verizon website and have it shipped.

This is incorrect. The port is shaped differently for the MHL adapter. Any MicroUSB cable should carry charge/data unless it specifically says charge only.
I've been using this cable for both charge/data since my Droid 2 since I like to have a really long cable.
http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-6-Feet...I62Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334241291&sr=8-1
And this is why the port is shaped the way it is.
http://www.amazon.com/Micro-USB-HDM...5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1334241347&sr=1-5
I stand corrected. Thanks. Didn't realize this.

No problem. Based on the OPs info and saying that he broke the original cable (not sure what/how) and it doesn't work in multiple computers. I would assume the worst and say that he may have broken the port on the phone. I've done this before. Left the phone charging overnight, knocked the phone off the table while I was sleeping, and picked it up in the morning.
The phone still charged (although you had to hold the cable at the right angle), but data was a no go. The OPs hit must've been a serious though because the USB port on the Rezound is pretty stout.

Solid logic, but I actually broke the cable twice. The first time I pulled the metal piece out of the cord (which was just pushed back in, everything worked) but when it actually broke and was non-fixable the cable was simply pulled out of the phone and the cable came in two. Turns out a snug fit isn't so great after all. I don't know, mixed thoughts going through my head. And actually, I've been getting the computer hookup notification when I plug it into a socket. (Wallcharger, phone restarts quickly then the notification pops up and doesnt go away until it's unplugged and the notification is clicked on again)

Funny thing is, I did this and they told me they only carried the one I have now. Dissapointed I left thinking "what the hell, how can you only carry this cable when there is a much different one coming with the phone, that you, Verizon, sold me?" but of course, I avoided an epidemic and am doing everything I can and using alternate methods for file transfer. Only thing is I can't run RUU's because I can't relock my bootloader.

[Q] USB not recognizing PC or Docks, please help.

Yesterday I plugged my phone into my PC and went to set it to mount as mass storage but the USB connected notification wasn't there. The phone charged fine off the USB, just didn't see the PC.
I thought this may be a PC issue until going to use it on my HD Multimedia dock, phone wouldn't recognize the dock was attached. Then went and tried it in the car dock, same thing, phone charged but didn't go into cardock mode.
Also not sure if this is related but since then battery has been discharging quite quickly.
Please help.

This will probably solve ur problem:
Uninstall all motorola from PC
Reinstall motocast 1.29
Connect ur razr in every mode, and wait it reinstall the drivers.
Cheers
Thanks, but it's the phone that's not recognizing the usb cable is plugged in. I've tried it on three PCs and the darn thing will only charge, not give usb connection options.
Get a small paintbrush and a can of Dust-Off or other compressed-gas sprayer.
Hold the phone between your knees with the USB port up. Swirl the brush around inside the USB jack while blowing air into it at the same time.
Try it now.
Micro USB jacks have a very nasty habit of collecting pocket lint. It can prevent the cables/plugs on any device from making a solid electrical contact.
This will likely become a routine operation that you perform once a week or so.
You can buy micro-USB rubber plugs that protect a female jack from damage and dirt. You should try the usual places to find one; Amazon, DigiKey, Fry's, JameCo, etc.
If this doesn't get it, you may be looking at either replacing the jack (if you can un/solder very small things), or replacing the phone itself.
PS: If you have geeky friends who like pranks, get a high-powered magnifying glass and check for Scotch Tape on the USB jack contacts. I've done this to an obnoxious iPhone FanBoyz phone before. I confessed before his battery was completely dead...

Did anyone ever find a solution to this? I'm having the exact same issue, have tried clearing out the USB port, different cables and every port on my PC. It charges on connection but doesn't recognise that it is connected to a computer rather than a power port.
Any advice?

Stock. I'm thinking of doing a factory reset as it has been freezing a lot recently and I suspect its a software issue, but I was hoping to do a proper backup first, however I lost root a while ago when I updated to ICS . I don't know if the freezing and not recognising computer could be two sides of the same issue?

[Q] Unable to connect to pc (no it's not a driver issue....)

Hi,
Having a problem since a few weeks with my s3.
Normally i could connect wiht my phone to any pc,, without any problems. Either it be unix, win, whatever...
Suddnely it stopped working, only thing that happens is charging when i connect it to my pc. Different cables tested, original one, etc..
Connecting it to different pc's resulted in a no go.. so it must be phone related.
No windows pop up, or anything!!
So I figured: Let's install a new rom.
Tried ultima 15 rom, got a different CM rom now (sentinel)... all to no avail.
Is it possible that this has something to do with my radio?
rom info:
android: 4.3
baseband: CEEMG2
Anyone have an idea what to do? Even ADB push ain't working..
See your identical post
I experienced the same problem when m using the Galaxy Nexus S But it was solved by using the app from play store named SD booster... In this app m just set the value of sd card to 1024 give root access and Boom my phone is connected as normal
If this not help then i seriously recommend you to replace the charging port of the mobile through samsung outlet
Go into developer settings, some ROMs may have different ways to get into develop er setting and after you get in make sure USB debugging is enable ^.^
Sent from my SPH-L710 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Usb debugging is not required for phone to pc connection see basic faqs and guides .
But as OP has ruled out drivers and cable that only leaves the phone so its worth trying .
Usual replies are
Drivers
Cable
Dirty USB Ports
Not connected to main-board usb port .
I had same issue with my Galaxy SII and when i took it to service center they said mother board needs to be replaced.
So after that SII was good as new.
Got same problem here.
phone is charging over usb , but no data connection (tried different usb cables, different usb ports, different pc etc) but nothing..
also.. tried in download mode and so (after reading forums..) but without success.
then i decided to dissasemble that phone and look, what's inside that beast
cleaned usb port (inside, with contact cleaner), resoldered all pins and etc..
reassembled it back to one piece again and still, no data connection, but only charging
so, here i am, what to do next ? change the usb port on motherboard ?
(visually, everything looks right, good solder points and etc.)
Thanks, Martin

if anybody interested:
i've got it working again :victory:
basically, the problem was the hard way (crap usb data connections on motherboard)
soldered new ways for data+ and data-, and now it's back alive again...
(pictures of ways in attachment)
Martin
see you fixed it already but a note to others :
try using usb port right on the motherboard instead of the case front panel usb ports.....connecting to the front usb ports didn't work for me on some roms, but the rear one always connected so I just have a long cable running out of the back to connect my phone and it works on all roms I've used so far
Nice work hani93, i unfortunately do not dare to desolder and solder this stuff
I've noticed another thing though which is weird!!
When i tried to charge my phone via the power charger (the ac one?), when i check my battery view it still says that i'm charging via USB.
I don't think this is correct, i thought it should say AC or something and when charging via USB port on pc it should display USB?
I think this might be one of the issues that it's also not popping up on the computer.
Anyone know what is causing this or someone can confirm that when charging via power supply it should say something else then USB?
Just confirming your question when charging by PC it says (USB) and when its charging from the Mains it says (AC).
hmmm... guess it must be a hardware issue then?
Either usb port or mainboard... christ...
open it up and cleaned the contacts a bit of the usb port...
Still not functioning..

try to go into Download mode (volDown+Home+Power) and then connect usb, same situation?(eg, no data connection to pc ?)
if nothing again.. try to clean usb port inside (where you plug usb cable), sometimes there is dust and etc. then it stops working.
also, how did you clean contacts on motherboard ? i suggest to take soldering iron with clean bit, and drag iron along the pins.

USB data connection acting strangely

Most usb cables work to charge my phone, but won't form a data connection with my xt910. I do have ONE that will. I thought it might be the cables, but they form a connection with other devices. Thought I'd mention, it says a usb is connected regardless of which cable I use in ap fastboot.
What is going on????
Also, I just got the usb port replaced thinking this was the issue... i don't get it...
I had this problem with a certain phone before it turned out to be the plug the part that actually goes into the phone was not long enough. you might want to compare the plugs length on the ones that work and dont

Ah, this is it! I guess Motorola makes their port deeper so that consumers have to buy their cables
Yeah just take a razor and carve off some of the extra rubber around the plug.
