[Q] Quick Jellybeans 18 addon question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hey everyone,
Currently on Jellybeans - Build 18 ROM for my VZW Note 2. everything's working great so far, but was re-reading over the thread for it & noticed the addon section that has the VRAMC3 Modem. my current install seems to be working fine on both 3g & 4g (going on 1 week now with no crashes/downloads interrupted).
Do i need to flash this modem addon, or is this a "if it's not broke, don't fix it" situation?

The conventional wisdom is that you want the latest software to match the latest modem, but if everything is working fine there probably isn't a rush to do it (maybe flash VRAMC3 whenever build 19 comes out and you decide to update).

Not sure, but i think v18 is up to date on the modem (or at least when i look under phone details, baseband version is i605VRAMC3).
again, still new to flashing, so probably wrong but i <3 my Note 2.

If the baseband says VRAMC3 you are on the latest and don't need to do anything. You are set.

When you flash the rom the modem isnt touched. Im on beans18 with the original VRALJB modem. You must have already had the newer modem before you flashed. And the addage if it aint broke dont fix can apply here. If your modem plays good with your hardware and rom then let it be. I havent changed mine and probably wont, unless I get bored and want to try and extensively test which is better. That, however, could end up all in vain since ive read in other threads that it seems like peoples experiences are very subjective to their situation- area, nearby towers, hardware and on and on.

[Q] Frequent wifi disconnect even after official ICS DDLP8

I've had no luck with wifi ever since I started trying out ICS builds.
So far I've restricted myself to leaked official builds. The phone just can't hold onto a damn wifi signal even when kept right next to the bloody access point.
Every few minutes it disconnects. Sucks when you're trying to download a huge update for a game.
I don't know if there's an official build out for India, I'm using DDLP8 which was marked as for Nepal. It's definitely stable, but wifi connectivity is totally useless .
I use Wifi Analyzer, and it shows up signal strength as pretty good, using automatic channels, and usually it latches onto channel 11 or 13. My other devices at home have never faced any such problem so it's definitely not a router problem.
Is there anything else to check for?
Edit: I'm using XXLPQ, not DDLP8 (which is the baseband version). My bad.
not familiar of ddlp8 as cant find it as sammobile / intratech
why dont you skip the leaked firmwares and just use the official ones.
also complete wipe your phone flash a GB stock and dont do anything else ...., no root no restores and see if it hold wifi.

It appears DDLP8 is a modem/baseband version. Not the build version. That's why you couldn't find it. But I'm just guessing. OP will have to confirm or deny that.

Yes, you're right. I am using XXLPQ for Nepal, after reading that the official Nepal build works fine on the Indian version of the S2. Sammobile still does not show any official build for India. Does this make a difference?
I saw the problem moments after I had flashed the ROM and rebooted, i.e. with a clean phone set to factory defaults (and rooted) - so I doubt it's due to any other program interfering.

Only for getting "official" updates through Kies. If you don't care about getting updates through Kies, then no, it won't matter.

Wifi drivers are in the kernel, I believe. What method did you use to root? Did you flash a kernel to achieve root? Try flashing a new kernel, or flashing a stock ICS kernel and see if your Wifi still drops after that.
Well, you can also give a try by flashing your baseband/modem itself and see it will be any better. You have few ones in this topic, all flashable via CMW :

Indeed, but it worth to be tried imo. Not sure it would be related but it only take few minutes and can at least fix the problem, he has nothing to loose by trying it imo.

I'm fairly certain modem/baseband has NOTHING to do with wifi, so I'll have to disagree with you on the possibility of it fixing his problem.
Well, i m getting uncertain now, was pretty sure about . Sorry for the mistake then.

I could be mistaken (I will admit that), but I have changed modem/baseband and seen no effect on wifi. I have changed kernels, and seen HUGE effect on wifi. So that's just my experience.
Booth my kids had the same problem! Solved by disabling WI-FI Direct, working fine since

Ok, thanks for your links mate, at least i ve learned something. So, he can also give a try by testing different kernels then.
still having issues, you have to do some work..... flashing kernels is not the solution! it should work as is!
1: using cwm format system, cache, data, dalvik
2: flash one of the newer GB Stock Roms get one from intratech, using odin.
3: dont root just see if it works without doing anything, keep it stock. no restores nothing
if it works, it will work on ICS too now.

Well, if you re-read some of the posts above, he said he rooted, but didn't say HOW he rooted. If he rooted by flashing a kernel, then that could be what is screwing with his wifi, depending on WHICH kernel he used. So flashing a different kernel MAY actually solve his problem.
To my experience this problem is most likely related to the kernel you are using. The latest siyah kernel supposingly rectifies this issue. Why dont you give it a try?
I did and saw a big difference...

[Solved] Issue with WiFi

Hey there,
Alright so a couple of days ago my WiFi on my Samsung Galaxy S2 phone just started acting weird. By weird I mean the further away I am from my router (like 1 bar wifi signal - opposite end of the house) websites load, however if I'm pretty much next to it with a max bar wifi signal nothing loads (or sometimes they do load but take extremely long)
In short, the further away from router wifi works fast, whereas the closer I am wifi works slow or doesn't even load websites/applications at all.
So what's happening here?
Thanks,
Jason
PS: No I'm not capped, and no one was/is downloading anything when I conducted my tests.

I hope all those details help (if they're things there that I shouldn't be sharing to the public please tell me, so I can remove them). Also, I haven't tried the original factory Rom for this phone to see if that fixes the problem, the only issue I have is I forgot what version and such I'm supposed to use.
Ohh and I bought the phone in Australia, if that's any help.
Remove the FFC ID but the rest is OK Yep, doing a clean install of stock (with wipe) is the next step. Re: which stock rom to use, go to Samfirmware & use the pulldown boxes to choose device/carrier/country & find one for your carrier. Doesn't matter much whether it's ICS or JB (though don't flash 4.0.4 stock; use something else) as you're only doing it to test.
Before you go down that path though, you could try a 'dirty' (without wiping) flash of your current rom/kernel. Though probably unlikely to work, it's worth a try given going back to stock is a bit of a pain. You could also try some other custom kernels given WiFi drivers are in the kernel & flashing a new kernel (and fresh drivers as a result) might fix the problem if it's a case of the drivers being messed up.
It could also be something router-side causing it, but we'll look at the phone-side first before looking at stuff like that.

Alright, So I'm on the SameMobile Firmware site and am now using the drop down boxes, I chose Model: GT-I9100 - Galaxy S II and then I'm stuck with Product Code. What do I chose here? Do I chose Vietnam because the phone was made there or do I chose Australia (Optus) because I remember a Optus boot screen on the original firmware (and the Modem is the same as the Baseband version - I9100XXLS9)?

How do I flash my current rom/kernel? I'm still very new to this whole rom scene, I just go off what I see in videos :/
How do you flash your current rom/kernel again ? To be really honest with you (and I'm not saying this to offend you), if you're asking that question you probably shouldn't be messing with your phone in the first place.
The same way you flashed it in the first instance.
If you still really don't know how to flash a rom or kernel, you really need to read the threads stickied at the top of Q&A and also the guides/tutorials stickied near the top of General. I'm not about to regurgitate stuff like that purely because you're unsure of what to do when that stuff has been asked/answered here thousands of times over the past two years. Also, just doing stuff without understanding what you're doing can easily lead to a busted phone.
Re: which stock firmware to choose, it doesn't matter (as I said in my PP), I just said choose one for your carrier because that's what I'd do, if you had Optus firmware on it previously, you can go with that. It's not really of any consequence.
However...
You need to read all of my PP. I did say to try reflashing your current custom rom/kernel first because this will be quicker/easier than going back to stock.

Oh I know what you meant by flash, it's just my lingo that Is off. Dw I understand what you meant now.
Okay, I reflashed my current rom (which was SuperNexus 3.0 Build 1) and that didn't fix the problem any bit.
Okay, now that i've finished downloading the original firmware you say, "doing a clean install of stock (with wipe) is the next step". How exactly do I do a clean install? Does that mean wipe everything, un-root, I've never done this before?
You don't seem to be reading everything I've posted:-
"If you still really don't know how to flash a rom or kernel, you really need to read the threads stickied at the top of Q&A...".
Oh, look. 4th thread from the top in Q&A 'flash stock Samsung firmware'. In other words, as I've already said, I'm not going post stuff for you that's already been posted here & is easy to find purely because you want your hand held.

You can run any rom you like if you've flashed the right version of recovery. There are several 4.4.2 roms available if you want to run the latest. Depending on your area, you may get as good a signal with an att modem. Personally I'm running the BlownFuze 4.4.2 with the UVLG3 modem, with no major issues.

Any JB and up roms, you will need to flash gapps again, but your apps will come back when you log in your gmail. Just read the OP for rom you use and there will be a link to appropriate gapps, though many are the same.
If your new though, I would advise you to read up a bit. Nobody is going to replace your phone if you dont understand and as far as I know, nobody has invented a time machine yet.
Welcome aboard, its fun, but nobody is responsible but you.

SOLVED - i545 w/ NC5 stuck in bootloop, TWRP no longer works

UPDATE: SOLVED, as of 07 FEB 2016; I needed to find an .MD5-compiled ROM with an NC5 bootloader; my last working bootloader was NC5 and using Odin to flash ROMs with other bootloaders had failed.
My phone has been rooted for over 2 years now and I've run a handful of ROMs, with Hyperdrive probably the most stable of the lot. Last fall I was losing some functionality (bad microphone) and I figured I might as well try a new ROM in case that helped. I install CM 12 and life was okay. I set it to download updates (mistake) and it upgraded me from CM 12 to CM 13. Much as I like the new Marshmallow features, my S4 steadily degraded in function over time, to the point where I stopped making or receiving phone calls.
Last week half of my installed apps disappeared, and attempting to install anything through the Google Play store failed. No clue how that might happen, but I knew it was time to flash a new ROM.
That was when I discovered I could no longer boot into TWRP; it hung on the TEAMWIN logo screen. Then I started getting the Verizon screen claiming it had detected unauthorized software.
Since I could no longer operate the phone, I went ahead and put it into download mode and ran Odin3 v3.10.7 and used that to flash an OC1 ROM, the only one I had that was in .MD5 format.
Now I can't get past a bootloop that leaves me hanging at the Verizon logo screen.
Any thoughts?
What is your bootloader right now? And/or what was it while on Hyperdrive?
Edit: wait....I see where u Odin'd oc1...was it the stock image? If so u may have flashed the oc1 boot.img. If that's the case, I suggest you download FlashFire and read up on it. Because if u were on nc5 or anything before you should be able to ODIN back down. But if u have an oc1 bootloader you're permalocked.
Huh. I tried to respond to this hours ago. Didn't upload, apparently.
Anyhow, thanks for responding. I have not been able to get an .MD5 version of the stock image to flash. The only complete .MD5 I've successfully downloaded is called "I545VRUGOC1_Neutered_Full_Odin.tar.md5". The last ROM running on this device was CyanogenMod 13, which is Android 6 with NC5 kernel.
I'm currently attempting to download "VRUFNC5 Full-Wipe Verizon SCH-I545 4.2.2 562219 Stock Restore.tar.md5" but it is slow going.
As for FlashFire, how could I install it to my phone? I cannot get past the bootloop. Odin seems to be my only option for flashing at this point, right?
Have you tried going to recovery after flashing OC1? maybe there are some leftovers of previous process, if your phone can go into recovery you should try to do some wipes

Great suggestion; unfortunately, TWRP is blocked by the Verizon notice now (the one that tells you Verizon's identified unauthorized software on the phone).
Okay, I'm going to try an NC5.MD5 that I was able to download. Here's hoping it moves this process forward....

You're on the right path. ODIN the nc5 full wipe. And from there you can use Safestrap to flash whatever. But I'm wondering if you've locked the bootloader to oc1 or of1. If that's the case, you can go to sammobile.com and register and sign-in and download any factory image flashable thru ODIN.
The nc5.md5 worked! It's not particularly stable (yet), but at least the phone boots up and seems to work. Thanks to those who took the time to read over the issue and offer suggestions!
May i ask how you had cm13 running on nc5? @Cincinnatux

Perhaps I am mistaken. I had NC5 the last time I had checked, which was when I installed CM12. Sometime around December or so CM12 upgraded itself to CM13. The only thing I remember having to change was GAPPS, moving that from 5.1 to 6.0.

While I used to troll XDA for ROMs, for CM I'm sure I went to their website and downloaded whatever was current at the time, which was a Lollipop ROM. I used TWRP to install, but I no longer have any of my notes for that install so I couldn't verify any of this, really.

If that's the case then you actually had the mdk bootloader. There is no way to have any cm based rom on nc5.

That's what I was assuming as well. When I had the s3, I was able to install a cm Rom thru Safestrap. Actually the other thread we were in by mohammad.afaneh, he was a dev on the Safestrap for s3 and got it to support a cm Rom, but it didn't have working data signal or Wi-Fi.

So he got kexec working? That would be nice.
Maybe he can provide some insight on this.
I know many others that would love to use cm based roms.
Would be even better if he could get safestrap to work on oc1/of1 bootloaders

I don't think it was kexec. But go to the s3 forums and/or search his afh. We could probably modify it, or figure out exactly what he changed and incorporate it into the SS we have. Depending on what he changed, it may be possible to implement nc5flasher, gain support for AOSP bases (aka get them to boot). But in order to have a fully functional modem/firmware, the kernel would need to be built from source. I do know there is a thread (I think in s4 unified development) on a proof of concept project that will enable insecure modules on locked bootloaders. I could be wrong about the actual forum it's in and exactly what's involved. I believe it can be done, it's just gonna take many minds focused on a common goal with positive intent.
PS. There's a bounty and it would be nice if we could do it.

Just to reduce my ignorance a little, maybe one of you can point out the error in my thinking/memory. I thought NC5 vs MDK vs OC1 was whatever was listed in About Phone as the Baseband Version, right? While my phone was MDK at the time of purchase (July 2013), I changed the baseband a few times while upgrading to newer flavors of Android. My current baseband is I545VRUFNC5, which is what I remember it being last fall as well. Where am I mistaken? Thanks!

Baseband does not equal bootloader.
You can update the baseband no problem but can't update the bootloader without being able to go back.
There is an app that you could use to check your bootloader called samsung phone info I believe our something like that.

So anyone else try this?
Weird issue, I no long have the option to access my phone from a computer. It just charges. Same issue with 3 cables on 2 computers. Tried multiple USB ports too. Normally a box would pop up asking how you wanted to treat the connection. Now nothing comes up. Flashed rom 3 times, full wiping it once. Worked fine before flashing this rom. Anyone else having this issue?
Know the issue uploading fixed build now...Apologies folks

I may start playing with some Sense 8 things for this device...maybe...
Dumb question... Does this update the firmware. I ask because for ViperOne, you have to update the firmware before you flash the rom.
No and if flashed a euro firmware.. I suggest you RUU back to ATT version.. Have been issues if this is not done with signal issues.

Since this is an official release, is it safe to flash when S-on?
I still have all the boat after flashing. You got rid of it?
I got so used to dang Sammy phones. My HTC is rooted, but can someone point me to a quick tut on how to ROM flash? I have this file downloaded & ready to go. Thanks in advance!

I was impatient and flashed atop the international 3.35 firmware. Everything flashed fine and came back up. But it certainly was glitchy. I definitely do not recommend doing it this way.
Dont see why not..testers were s-on

Debloated all the extra things from att yes..few apps are required for other apps to function correctly...Anything else you want to remove do so at own risk of breeaking other things...if you did not do a wipe and dirty flashed it does not remove bloat.Removed 252mb of ATT bloatware...And since coming or going to the euro builds they will not work properly with ATT in many aspects just an fyi..Some folks use the apps I left in which is minimal listed below.
Caller Name ID
KeyVPN
Kid Mode
News Republic
Polaris Office
