This thread is about the actual functionality of the New Jelly Bean update for the Desire X
and not whether you have it or not. Thats discussed on other threads.
I have come from Froyo on the Wildfire to the DX with ICS...well i can still do all what i have done in the past, but much better.
What improvements will JB bring to the DX. Can some one explain what we should see.
I have seen some one already explain, but it would be nice to get another point of view.
Some have issues and some dont, it confusing for us noobs:silly:
What is the hype behind it.
The reason why i am concerned is that some guys want to revert back to ICS, and thats not what it should be. JB should be an improvement.
lastly, the few hicups people have with the latest JB, could it be to an app or user related issue.

Same as you I have came from Froyo to Jelly Bean itself first of all the update was great Speed improvements were there (example is scrolling wallpapers in personalize its feels like the HTC One. Second the new software We all know Beats audio got screwed up by the OTA but HTC fixed it with anothe OTA and now bass is back This Update also enables us to test new software and to discover new things with Sense 4+ and also a feel of Jelly Bean, remember not all devices could get an update from their own manufacturers so were lucky enough to get this lol now we just need to deodex the stock JB ROM and custom ROMs would be all over the forum (I could do one now just no time to deodex the JB Stock ROM).
Wow, this is a positive post. Positive info that i expected.
Thankyou

See it this way,
Jelly bean is the LATEST android OS (although 4.2 > 4.1) but still, the CURRENT SUPER PHONE (HTC ONE) which gives Galaxy IV a scare, was also on 4.1.2 and will get 4.2.2 in a few days. So technically, after JB update, we are having one of the most updated devices around for such money.
Think again what happens to similarly priced samsung n sony phones, (believe me, most are stuck at ICS officially forever).
ON-TOPIC:
JB Sense4+ might not be what you expect, BUT the kernel source code, and libs will enable atis112 and others to port FULLY WORKING CM10 ROMS with Project Butter.
We'll soon get kernel 3.4 source which will be a platform for YEARS to come and keep this device alive. believe me.
My cousins with xperia U/sola, galaxy duos, etc will be stuck @ ICS officially.
Regards
Yasir

Yasir, thankyou for your post, it does give me confidence going forward.
Although i dont understand your last sentence, but it does sound good any way.
I said yesterday that Jelly bean is not so cool..i was stupid, its f....n awesome. Its faster than ICS, web browser and downaloading too. Right now my download speed is 2,5mb/s. With ICS it was hardly reach 1mb/s. Google Now is really good, i can search the nearest restaurent with my voice and it supports hungarian so its good for those who dont speak english (like me )

I'd like to say something on this thing since Yasir already mentioned it(sorry op kind of off-topic)
the 3.4 kernel is actually very exciting because currently barring HTC jb devices this is present on only the latest nexus devices(4, 10) only even nexus 7 is on 3.1 and Samsung devices(yes even s3) is on 3.0 .Thus we are currently on the latest version (officially not true android on 3.8 but we are one of the top few and latest currently) . Also this proves that HTC put a lot of effort (yeah was a Samsung Guy so I know what I'm talking about) thus according to me we should get 4.2 also(surity of about 83%) the real question will be if we get 5.0 or not.
PS I like the stripped down sense.
Htc One X JB kernel : 3.1
Wow, Desire X has a newer kernel, awesome.

All of you are talking about newer kernel, but how will it affect the end user experience? I don't talk about developers, i mean people that buy phone and don't even know about custom ROMs, using stock firmware

As the title states this is a clarification for people that either don't know or are confused. All HTC one models are the same across the board hence you can flash international roms.at&t,tmobile, and sprint users can flash international roms without any problems.
I have an at&t version and been flashing international roms on it.I am currently on android revolution he Rom latest build on 4.2.2 that just came out and man this thing is blazing fast! You think it was fast before..load 4.2.2 with sense 5 and this thing fly's smooth!
So to clear the air yes it is okay to flash international roms.again if your still a tad bit scared ateast check and read the entire thread to stay on the safe side
Happy flashing
This is why I don't regret going with HTC instead of Samsung. I've always hated that international and US variants were different in hardware for most Samsungs. HTC one is a real winner and believe they will make a comeback in time.

Hmmm.... All SGS4s that use the S600 qualcomm chipsets can flash each others ROMs, so this is a slight misconception.
i9505 and all its variants can share roms. About 70% or more of the SGS4s in the world are a variation of this edition including the future GE coming out.
i9500 is stuck in its own community. This is the one you are referring to and it is a small community that seems to be minimizing.

Hmmmmmmm...different processors for S4 variants, the Snapdragon 600 and the Exynos. Where as the HTC one ONLY has the Snapdragon 600 for all variants. We can flash international ROMS on our AT&T model. Try flashing a S4 (Exynos based)Rom on a S4 that has the Snapdragon 600 processor. Obviously you didn't read my first post correctly as I said that I disliked how Samsung tends to make phones with different processors for one phone i.e (Galaxy Note, S2, S3, S4) which had different processors between the international and US models.
I believe it had to do with Samsung's Exynos LTE capabilities in the US.

Yes I did read your post, but you made it seem like roms aren't interchangeable at all. My point is that there is a international S600, i9505, and its variations make up about 75% of all the SGS4s in the whole world. For example, the US T-Mobile SGS4 can flash roms from the International i9505.
Sure, it can't flash from the i9500, but the development mostly lies in the i9505 and it's variants anyways.

Well I just flashed an i9505 international rom onto my ATT S4, all the US Carrier Variants are the same as the i9505, the i9500 is the only difference and thats the exynos cpu, and as stated most variants out right now are the i9505 including the upcoming GE, that said all the One Variants contain the same chipset, so that does make things less confusing.
Sprint users can't flash any ROM actually. Only certain ROMs are compatible.
Please edit your OP with this information as it's currently misleading to others

You seem to be forgetting the fact that the Att and Verizon (I think verizon) have the bootloader locked with no current solution to unlock which has made it super difficult for devs to make solutions for rooting them and there's barely any development going on for those two either. HTC on the other hand has a incredible community full of development and amazing devs (not saying the s4 doesn't, but ours seems more so) and a lot of people (myself included) don't even bother with root because HTC did such an incredible jib with the one and sense 5.

That is true but shabby penguin has a modded cwm recovery that allows you to flash any rom from tmobile, sprint, Verizon, or the international i9505 version. Development is fine over there. I have the best of both worlds with the one and the S4. Lol

I am new here, so be gentle I am wanting to get the S4 for Verizon, but I like the idea of having pure android on it. I know the Google Edition S4 will be released the end of this month. what are the chances of someone releasing it so I could put pure android on the S4 from Verizon? They are a big price difference so I would prefer to save the money.
Thank You all for your time
Do you not root? CM10 is out already for the S4. Honestly I don't even know if the Google edition is coming to Verizon, I haven't heard anything about it.

I would much rather have pure android that CM10, Google said they would be releasing a Google Edition for Verizon at I/O. Available through the play store.
honestly, do what I did. get the vzw gs4, root and install a loki recovery on it ASAP. for all flashing purposes, loki is basically an unlocked bootloader. rom and kernel support is fantastic (touchwiz and aosp). I was debating the same thing you were, even considering moving to t mobile, but I made the jump to the vzw gs4 about 3 weeks ago. I'm happy with my decision so that's my 2 cents on the issue

Any word on if the google version will have support for all the new TW features? (IR (with watch on), smart screen, air view, etc)
I actually find some of those features great (like the IR) I don't think CM supprts them, but if the google edition supports it then it may be worth waiting. Or like others have mentioned just root and install the rom when it is ready

No.
IR may eventually be hacked/put into AOSP/AOSP-base ROMs, but the rest... forget it.
This is why a lot of us are going to be running AOSP-themed TW ROMs.
Anyway, the main difference with the Google Edition is that it won't work on VZ. But the devs will port the AOSP code to the i545 soon enough, don't worry.
As far as I know the Nexusized GS4 is going to be on T-mobile only... and as soon as I figure out if the Watch ON will come to AOSP or is supported on AOSP, I'm totally there.

It's not going be "on" anything, but it will work with both US GSM carriers and their MVNOs.
It's the Google Edition One that will only work on T-Mo.
Are there any difference between an AT&T HTC One and an unlocked HTC One (bought directly from the HTC website)? Also the HTC One Google Play edition, what's the differences?
I have never used an android phone before so this will be my first one. If there are differences, which one would be "better" (for a noob like me)?
Thanks

The regular HTC one (in your case AT&T the one from the htc website has a unlocked bootloader to be able to flash custom roms and root easier) Comes with not a normal android ui but HTC's own little thing Called sense. most of htc devices have sense the HTC one has the highest version of sense right now most company's have their own custom android ui. samsungs touchwiz, and motorola motoblur. the HTC one you buy from carrier does not have a unlocked bootloader. the google play editon comes with a unlocked bootloader , but does not come with Sense. it is a pure android jelly bean Stock ui which i prefer most, i would say the google play editions is more for developers or people who want to root it and flash custom roms but the normal everyday person can still use it

OK I spent eight hours yesterday figuring out how to root my phone.... Success... I was finally able to figure it out.. Thanks for all the tutorials and posts that helped me do it...
I would love some direction in how to find some cool and neat and SAFE AND STABLE Roms to flash.. Is there a site with roms to choose from?? Any help or suggestions is appreciated....

Just look in the android development section in the international forums. Viper rom is really nice, so is Arhd.

I second ARHD. It depends whether you like sense and want to keep it without all the bloatware, or try something more pure android. I know Google edition ROM is out now, but I like sense too much to try it. Heres some links to arhd and ge.

For maximum themeing capabilities you can go with any of the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) based roms like Cyanogenmod (CM) AOKP, Vanilla rootbox, Slimbean, etc. They all support custom theming with hundreds uf not thousands of downloadable comaptible theme files in the Google Play store.
They are much more customizable than the GPe roms as well. But be warned, what you gain in customizability and cool factor you may tradeoff in optimal function of the phone features itself, namely camera, sound, call audio quality and BT call/streaming audio reliability.
The reason is because GPe and vanilla android 4.2.2 may look identical on the surface, but are different underneath. The GPe of the One runs on a stock Sense OS heavily modified to look and work like vanilla Android IU, but the underlying OS framework works best with the HTC hardware. While AOSP roms have hardware compatibility issues. You'll see this is a regular issue on those threads. I was using CM until the GPe roms were released. I loved the user options on CM and AOKP but was frustrated by terrible call quality and unstable BT connections. I switched to one of the GPe based roms and I gave up some cool features, but my phone works too well as a phone now to switch back.
Most people using GPe based roms are hoping the developers will adopt and incorporate the cool custom ideas from CM based roms like UI options, themes, adjustable control tile toggles, navigation bar mods, etc.

The Sense version isn't heavily modified to look like Vanilla, its heavily modified to look like Sense. All carriers start with vanilla.
As for the features--because there's a Google Play Edition (GPE). The GPE devices run vanilla android--what we call AOSP, after the Android Open Source Project...which is the project Google created in order to "Open Source" Android, make it available to everyone, and provide for a "Google Experience".
The Google Experience" comes stock on the Google Play Edition devices, and guarantees that the device comes the way Android is/was intended to be, and is designed far better in terms of functionality and usability than the Firmware(s) created by Samsung, HTC, and other manufacturers, which add additional software to run on top of the Google Experience software in order to differentiate themselves from one another, and be able to say that their phones are better. In reality their software might look better and have a few extra features, but it's slower, can take years to update, and in the end, is often more restrictive.
Because these devices require Google certification, all features are required to be in working order. And because Android is so modular, you're guaranteed to have all the drivers, libraries, etc. you need to use all the base hardware available on the device. This means that beats audio, Wifi , Bluetooth, GPS, 3d, Sound, etc. Will all work. The only thing that won't work is the IR blaster on top of the device (for turning your device into a universal remote control to change channels with on your TV, blue ray player, etc. ), and since updates come from the manufacturer and not Google, it's believed that an update may enable this in the future.
By the way, Engadget did a side by side during their review, and stated that picture quality wasn't any better on the Sense version---which means that you'll get great photos on both devices.
That's the reality. Some have made some wild speculations, and have come to some wild conclusions (entirely subjective and disproved), but this all comes from extremely authoritative reviewers...people who are given devices and whos career depends on spending a ton of time analysing these devices, and getting it right.

The Sense version isn't heavily modified to look like Vanilla, its heavily modified to look like Sense. All carriers start with vanilla.

CleanROM 3.0 <stock look and feel with added performance and perks
Just so I understand this correctly, if we need to get S-OFF to flash ROMs such as Viper due to it being 1.28, correct?

nope s-off is not needed. If you still can, obtain the unlock key from HTCDEV.com and use that to unlock your bootloader (this will wipe your phone completely), install a custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP, then install either superuser or supersu for the root
Then flash away

Thank you so much! So what exactly does S-OFF allow you to do besides customizing the bootloader?

Restore your phone completely back to pre-rooted stock condition with the stock Sense ruu. Just like when you got it from the store.
Also is required if you want to reflash/update the phone firmware (which will completely wipe out phone data just like unlocking the bootloader).

And do we need to update the firmware to install any of these ROMs?

NO.
Stop being so fixated on updating your firmware. Read more and ask fewer questions.
