I truthfully am just super confused theres so much information spread out my mind is numb from trying to process it all. all i wanna do it update my friends asurion replacement to JB (her old phone was lucky enough to get the update before the halting but now her current device is stuck on ICS) in the easiest way possible. can someone point me in the right direction? no root, no bl unlock, very purely an update to the official software (she was unaffected by the bugs reportedly found in the update that caused the recall)
xda brethren you are always there for me thanks so much!!!!!

I have a T-Mobile G2 and although I've read earlier today that they are 'working' on getting the update ready. I'd rather just have the normal version of Sense that everyone else has
I've tried reading through lots of topics here but I'm a bit confused what I need to do. Do I need to root my phone ? Unlock it ?
As you can probably tell I'm new to Android so I don't really know much about it
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks
Yes, T-Mobile had to be dragged kinking and screaming into making an announcement. Now that they have I shall wait.
It seems the only benefit of getting the T-Mobile Upgrade is that you get to keep your warranty apart from that it's just the same but with a few T-Mobile logo's chucked in...
..and not having to go through the risks of 'hacking' your phone aswell

well even if you get it unlocked from what iam reading it make not a S**** of difference you still cannot use updates from HTC. I have rooted my tmob with custom rom seems to work ok alot faster then tmobs stock rom but i am sure there official update will be here very very soon
And pigs might grow wings and start aerial assaults...
I have no faith in T-Mobile's ability to provide a timely ROM upgrade, maybe by Xmas. I would love them to prove me wrong of course.
Go to Modaco and follow the instructions carefully to install their custom rom, if any steps in the procedure give you cause to be concerned, DONT do it.
And always make backups of your data.
And make sure you backup your data.
Yes, I know I repeated myself, but trust me, its a major point if you are going to mess around with roms.
so i have been hearing about the much anticipated "2.1 update 1" update that will enable pinch zoom on maps and browser applications.
i havent recieved it yet (im in canada so i figure the next few days will bring it to me) BUT i am debating what to do
xda peeps have already released a dual touch capable update, that is supposedly functional in all multitouch capable applications.
so i have a few options... wait for the official release and take it, or root and go the back door XDA way..... i have had my X10 for a few weeks now, i love it but i notice its a bit laggy considering the hardware.
so, a few questions...
1) should i wait for the SE official and keep my phone stock? (to maintain warranty in case of hardware problems)
2) in that case if i want full dual touch capability, can i do the XDA dual touch root mod AFTER i get the SE update?
3) if i decide to root and follow some of the guides posted all over this forum to speed up and improve my phone, is my warranty void? am i f***** if i have a harware problem? cuz i just got this phone and dont want to void my warranty so quickly because i have heard of some potential hardware problems....
i know this is a big post, but its my first and im really hoping that i get better responses than some of the other android based forums i have tried in the past few days.
thanks in advance! please help me ouutttt i want to learnn
Hello,
Plz dont sling hate if this question has been asked elsewhere, i have looked but could not find the answer.
If i do a basic root and not change anything. Maybe uninstall some bloatware. Will i be able to update thru ATT? Such as if they ever release ics. Or should i wait for ics then root? Also will a update from att unroot it? I just got my Note and LOVE IT :victory: . Just wanna cover my bases.
Thx For The Help. :good:
Truth is nobody knows yet because it hasn't happened. The general consensus is that you will break ota updates by rooting. Will you lose root if you are able to take the download? I would say yes, but wouldn't worry about any of this. Just root and when they release ics, flash back to stock and take the download. Chances are, once you root, you will give two shivs about the official release cause you'll be running an ics ROM that's better than anything At&t will push out.
Root is not permanent so you can undo it.
Thanks for the responce. i was thinking that also but wasnt sure. True i might try and and have fun. Like you said i can always go back.
It can sometimes grow into an addiction. An example is my esteemed colleague Froidroid.
Sometimes?
Go for it. You will addicted. Rehabs for quiters

Sorry if this is old or anything and if so feel free to ignore it!
I just have been scouring tons of posts to find out how to unlock/root on the most recent version of Jelly Bean and found so many that said it wasn't possible, so I was getting really discouraged. Anyway, I finally gathered the info necessary to give it a go and success!
Hopefully this will help any who were uneasy about it or couldnt get a definitive answer as to how.
First off you need to unlock, the official ASUS unlock does actually work for Jelly Bean even though it says it's for ICS only. I ran it with the most recent FW and it worked like a charm.
From there all you need to do is follow the guide here by 1wayjonny (many thanks to you by the way for putting this together to help us noobs out!)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1929189
Also using his drivers (which he links) was a major help as I ran into a few problems actually getting the program to run all the way through. Don't worry if it doesn't work fully the first time, I had no ill effects and I ran it 3 times.
Anyway just thought I'd post this to give other noobs like me confidence in rooting and whatnot. Good luck to all!
half of us can't unlock using the imbecile unlock tool asus provided.
Really? Man that blows! Even from the most recent OTA firmware update?
I was using the most recent firmware and then accessed the ASUS site from my tablet and downloaded it from there, I don't know if that makes any difference.
It seems strange that it would work for some and not for others since we are all using the same device...

Good for you
Unofrutunatly its less than 50 % being able to unlock.Mine was unlocked, went in for a rma, came back relocked, and unlockable. So while you can unlock, not everybody else can
I would not say that 50% of users cannot unlock. Perhaps 50% of XDA TF201 users cannot unlock (which I doubt anyway), but definitely not 50% of all users cannot unlock.
this rooting and waiting for it for over 10 days, for 257 makes me wonder if i made a mistake in buying this phone as it seems devs are nt interested in this device, I envy now samsung owners as rooting never ever took so long, while we here have to go thru many steps to root 257 which i don't like to do.
Is this an indication of how the dev section especially for important things like rooting will be for every firmware, can somebody do something about this and contact the devs that do dev rooting to help us out.
It's the same story with the Z1. Sony fixed an exploit from the last build, so devs have to find a new one. My guess is that Doomlord and other devs are working on it, and it's clearly hard to find an exploit this time around. They'll get there, but give them some time. The FXP team is also in direct contact with Sony's dev team, and the FreeXperia Cyanogenmod ROM is a result of that collaboration. Why would Sony fix that exploit? Security. Not to screw with the devs, but people with malicious intentions.
Sony is one of the most dev friendly manufacturer out there (with Oppo), and this doesn't change it. They aren't actively trying to stop devs, like another manufacturer that ends with sung.
If you're really in a hurry and need root now, then downgrade to 532 again, root and upgrade again through OTA.

One of the most important things to remember on XDA is that its a community of people that want to help. Asking for an ETA, or insisting on a member to find an exploit quickly wont be received well.
This is my first Sony device, and I've found the core members active in this section to be some of the best Ive seen in my time here. Lord for example is almost always one of the first to reply with a helpful comment, Avetny, SpyderTracks... I could go on and on..
anyway like lord says its a new device, and give it time dude.
Thank you
you r right hamdogg i apologise for negative bursts
Official root as in an easy way of rooting or what?
I unlocked the bootloader and rooted instantly.

I guess people are waiting for vRoot to be updated. It's straight forward if we're on a firmware before 257, but it becomes a little more complicated if we're not. It's not hard, but it's a little time consuming with all the downloading and installing of software.
I wish we had a simple, one click solution that is made by an XDA dev that knows his/her way around these things so we aren't forced to wait for some "outsiders" to do it for us.
