Hello,
Plz dont sling hate if this question has been asked elsewhere, i have looked but could not find the answer.
If i do a basic root and not change anything. Maybe uninstall some bloatware. Will i be able to update thru ATT? Such as if they ever release ics. Or should i wait for ics then root? Also will a update from att unroot it? I just got my Note and LOVE IT :victory: . Just wanna cover my bases.
Thx For The Help. :good:
Truth is nobody knows yet because it hasn't happened. The general consensus is that you will break ota updates by rooting. Will you lose root if you are able to take the download? I would say yes, but wouldn't worry about any of this. Just root and when they release ics, flash back to stock and take the download. Chances are, once you root, you will give two shivs about the official release cause you'll be running an ics ROM that's better than anything At&t will push out.
Root is not permanent so you can undo it.
Thanks for the responce. i was thinking that also but wasnt sure. True i might try and and have fun. Like you said i can always go back.
It can sometimes grow into an addiction. An example is my esteemed colleague Froidroid.
Sometimes?
Go for it. You will addicted. Rehabs for quiters

I have a T-Mobile G2 and although I've read earlier today that they are 'working' on getting the update ready. I'd rather just have the normal version of Sense that everyone else has
I've tried reading through lots of topics here but I'm a bit confused what I need to do. Do I need to root my phone ? Unlock it ?
As you can probably tell I'm new to Android so I don't really know much about it
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks
Yes, T-Mobile had to be dragged kinking and screaming into making an announcement. Now that they have I shall wait.
It seems the only benefit of getting the T-Mobile Upgrade is that you get to keep your warranty apart from that it's just the same but with a few T-Mobile logo's chucked in...
..and not having to go through the risks of 'hacking' your phone aswell

well even if you get it unlocked from what iam reading it make not a S**** of difference you still cannot use updates from HTC. I have rooted my tmob with custom rom seems to work ok alot faster then tmobs stock rom but i am sure there official update will be here very very soon
And pigs might grow wings and start aerial assaults...
I have no faith in T-Mobile's ability to provide a timely ROM upgrade, maybe by Xmas. I would love them to prove me wrong of course.
Go to Modaco and follow the instructions carefully to install their custom rom, if any steps in the procedure give you cause to be concerned, DONT do it.
And always make backups of your data.
And make sure you backup your data.
Yes, I know I repeated myself, but trust me, its a major point if you are going to mess around with roms.
Hi. I just ordered the HTC Hero but I'm not sure what version OS it will ship with.
Whats the official latest? Will I have to root and all that stuff to install it?
What are Radio's? What do they do? Why would I need to install/update one?
Are there any risks or downsides to rooting the device?
If I do the official update, will I lose the ability to install custom ROMs? If I root it to install custom ROMs, will I lose the ability to install official updates?
Thats all for now... I might ask more questions.
Thanks in advance.
Well done! You do have some tastes!
Just forget about all your questions. Get used to Hero first.
Visit forum pages for knowledge and info for a month from today.
After that you will be answering and helping others.

Fair enough, thanks
But I know people just say "dont mess up". I'm just curious as to what the worst case scenario is if you DO mess up.

Worst case scenario?
What happened to *this* guy: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=585269
But you'd really have to be not careful when you do things...
Main things to remember when you're looking at things: if it doesn't say CDMA, it's likely for the GSM version of the phone and won't work.
If all else fails: ask here about specifics...and if it still breaks things, there's always the RUUs for your provider (assuming it's on the list: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622)
Hm cool, thanks!
I'll most likely only install the latest *official* RUU when I get my phone. Modding I guess will have to wait a bit, but its good to know that effing up is ... hard
Use and enjoy your Hero and determine what do you want from it ie usb tethering, skype on 3, sip application for which no roots needed. At present wifi tethering does need root. So not everyone will want to go root way.
If you still go root way , I suggest to read about it. Reading is harder! And its a 10 minute job once fully understood.
Have been reading any and all Rooting Posts and I have come to the conclusion that as of now, Most, if not all of the Rooting techniques are a shot in the dark.
If there is one good way that is reliable and doesn't screw up one thing or another than I have not seen it.
Example......Superoneclick....works on one phone but not the next....Roms....need more fixes to get to work than Microsoft.....
Tell me is there a proven way to unlock the bootloader, Root the phone and get Gingerbread to work fully ?
I may be new to this site and believe me I would love to have a open phone....But I have other things to do than F around trying to get a already KickAss phone to work.....Just saying....

you need to do more reading, no one uses superoneclick for the atrix... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1165791
Read the stickies..
Have you ever opened the android dev section?
Almost everything is in the sticky thread of clown.. With faqs guides etc..
Unlock your bootloader depending what atrix you have(att or international), then install the tenfars port of CWM4, and then you can root using the CWM root method..

To build on your Microsoft comment...............Some software is not compatible with all versions of Windows. The Atrix came out with Windows 95, has made it to XP, and with GB will be Windows 7. If you are not happy with the devs work, what they have done for everyone, and can't filter through the threads to get what you want, maybe you should get an iPhone and stick Cydia on it!......Or get a Windows phone because you won't have to "fix" anything on it!
If you want help, then you have started out the wrong way. Your post needs to be objective, and not flaming all the work others have done because you can't implement any of it, and are confused.
Root, ROM's, etc., do not need a bunch of fixes............you just have to READ so you know which ones work together for what you want. If you had actually taken the time, you would know that the bootloader has been unlocked, root is working, and GB is awesome. You just have to check the instructions for what you want on your Atrix, whether it be AT&T, Orange, Bell, etc.
Personally, I am on an AT&T Atrix 4G with unlocked bootloader, rooted, with GB 4.5.91, and have absolutely no complaints ot problems!
Since you don't want to F around, watch that door................it's heavy and swings closed fast.........wouldn't want it to hit you between the buttocks on the way out!
Bell ATRIX, unlocked bootloader, rooted, running 2.3.4. No problems

Mine is still unfder warrenty, I managed to brick it once so good that I couldnt even get into download mode, or recovery, now that the prime is gone and out of stock, if I brick it I could get credit towards a newer one. I know this is not the best thing to do but im on .21 from factory and really tired of coming back here to see no way to root it, well not without of hours of reading. So yes I actually do want to brick it. Best Buy will no longer fix them. Sorry if I sound evil.

So you are basically asking for help to commit fraud on Best Buy by purposefully killing your tablet so you can claim " it doesn't work and I don't know why" so as to get a replacement? Sorry can't help you.
why don't u just read the brick recovery thread and see for yourself how people got bricked.

Sorry, I had to close this thread. It is not acceptable to ask for guidance to commit illegal acts on xda.
Please stick to the rules, guys.
I know there probably are like 50 other threads of people asking the same thing, I've looked through a LOT of them, none of them actually tell me anything useful I want to hear. So, as the Title says, I'd love to know if there is actually any type of update, or way to update the phone to ICS or JB... A lot of people keep saying no, but some others are certain there is a way, I've found a couple of root options, but they all seem shady. If anyone knows how to work out this phone, to get a higher version of Android, I'd appreciate it, if the need to root happens, then some advice about it would be appreciated...
Phone: GSII SGH-S959G from Straight Talk.
Thank you
I have the same phone and been looking for a ICS rom for it, no luck so far. I did root mine and mod the original rom just fine. Over all it didn't add anything to it but I wanted to use the titanim backup app and others who need root. I know straighttalk phones are always a little behind others sold by att and bigger companies, so maybe someone will come up with a rom soon. May check cyogenMod see if they support it.

Yeah I've seen that not everyone put time into Straighttalk phones, and so far there is still nothing. I won't lose hope though!
I don't think you are in the right thread:
