Flash official ROM - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
A friend of mine has a Samsung Galaxy SII with a CM nightly installed. He upgrades the ROM a few days ago and he lost the SIM unlock that I previously made to the phone.
We tried to re-unlock the device, but we can not.
I think that a possible good way to solve the problem is to flash an official ROM from Samsung and then, root it again, unlock again and, if all the previous steps are OK, flash (or not) a new custom ROM (CM or maybe Paranoid).
I'm downloading the latest ROM for SGS2 for our country (Spain), and we have Odin ready to be used, but I cannot find any thread on this forum that explains, step by step, how to flash an official ROM.
In addition, do you have any other idea to fix my friend's mobile instead flashing an official ROM?
Best regards
P.S. I already found a post for flashing the latest stock ROMs. Sorry!

I find it really hard to believe that you've searched and found nothing when it comes to a Odin guide.
Odin is a popular software and it's problems have been covered several times..
Do you know what download mode is?

Hi!First of all, download this firmware. It's Android 4.0.3 XWLP7.After it finished downloading, extract it,so you will have a .tar.md5 file, and then open Odin.Make sure Kies is stopped. Then,on your mobile:make sure it's charged, and in Settings enable USB debugging. Then enter Download Mode(Hold POWER + HOME + VOL DOWN buttons together until it enters download mode). Now connect it to your PC.In Odin,Click PDA,and select the extracted firmware file.Make sure "Re-Partiton" and "Flash Lock" are unticked. Then Click start. It will take ~ 5 min. to flash the new ROM.After completed, disconnect it from PC.It maybe won't boot/it will be stuck in bootloop. Now enter Recovery(hold POWER + HOME + VOL UP buttons, until it restarts and shows up the "Galaxy S2 GT-I9100" screen. Now let the buttons go.In recovery(you can navigate with VOL UP/VOL DOWN buttons , and select with POWER button) select "Wipe Data/Factory Reset",or something similar.Select yes.It will take ~ 3-8 min. to wipe. That's it,you have restored your Galaxy S2! At the boot,it may ask for ask for an unlock code.Click cancel. If you want to unlock it,then download this app([root] Galaxy S2 SIM Unlock).Click SIM Unlock code, write it down, and once it asks for the code at reboot, type it in.If you want to root it,follow along.Download this file, and put it on your phone`s EXTERNAL SD! card. Now reboot into Recovery. In recovery, select "Install update from external storage", or something similar, and search the downloaded file.Install it.Now reboot. You don't have to wipe anything. That's it!

Thanks for your explanation, it is very complete. I made the same, but with a newer stock ROM (a 4.1.2 one), and I got it installed and rooted with PhillZ method.
The problem is that I cannot unlock the SIM: I tried with the program you suggested me, and it doesn't work: it brings me a code, but when I enter it, it doesn't work.
I tried other programs like Galaxy_S Unlock or GalaxSim Unlock, but I'm not able to get it unlocked. What can the problem be?
Edit: I "close" this thread and re-open it with a better explanation on the current situation and the real problem now.
Best regards

No wonder it took both of you a week to fix lol.Youd be better to read this section for a week to see the problems that can arise with flashing anything.

Rooting

Hi all
First i know there is loads of threads about rooting the galaxy ace on these forums but i am new to the rooting scene, so i would like somebody to point me to an easy guide that will do it. I also need to be able to unroot as well for warranty purposes.
My build number is XWKPY and gingerbread 2.3.3
Hope somebody can help as i need to remove the stock samsung bloat and possibly flash a new rom, which one would be the best as i need everything to work and must be the original google gingerbread experience.
Thanks Guys, hope to hear about this soon.

check out Android Development section man !
I read that but my firmware is not listed, thats why i am asking for help about this.
The Kiess software i have says i have the latest firmware.
Would that method still work with the firmware i have???.
This method works for 2.3.3 / 2.3.4 / 2.3.5. Here you go:
1. Download "upd_1.zip" (Attached).
2. Put it in your SDcard.
3. Switch off your phone
4. Reboot into Recovery mode by pressing HOME + POWER buttons at the same time (release power button while still holding home button till the white colored Samsung logo shows up).
5. Using volume buttons navigate to "install update from sdcard" or "apply update from sdcard" (I can't really remember what it is called).
6. Press Home button when you navigate over it to select it.
7. Select the file "upd_1.zip" by pressing Home button over it.
8. Reboot your phone in normal mode.
To check that you sucessfully installed, just goto your AppDrawer and look for an app called "Superuser". If it is there, you have sucessfully flashed, if not try repeating above steps.
To unroot; just download "unroot.zip" (Attached) and follow the above steps, instead selecting "upd_1.zip" select "unroot.zip" to unroot your phone!
Thanks, I have rooted and got rid of some of the samsung bloat and then un rooted.
It worked fine, thank you

I assume you were flashing with ODIN and therefore that you are familiar with it. If not just don't go ahead; do some reading instead .
Put your phone into download mode and make absolutely sure Kies is not running. Start ODIN, then connect the phone by USB. Does ODIN detect the phone?

I made sure Kies is not running, checked all the process under task manager.
Yes i am using ODIN1.85, it detects my phone but flashing fails, i think because i had XXLPS already and now i am trying to flash XXLPQ.
I actually wanted to flash CM9, and the procedure i found online said i must have XXLPQ, and for that i must have LP7 and clockwork recovery.
Try to go into recovery and wipe data + cache and format /system. Finally flash a rom in odin
If it fails, try odin and reparation with pit.
If no go, it is a physical damage in partition. RMA

Every phone has recovery. Power off, hold down the volume up, home, and power buttons. When your see the screen come on, let go of power, but keep holding home and volume up.
To find out your exact model number, look on the label under the battery.

You sure you have an i9100 now? You're currently active in another thread that is specific for i9100G.
In any case, if you keep going down the road of using a .pit file, make sure you use one for your specific model.
Look in the stickies in Q&A, there is a guide for fixing unflashable GSII by phistashio, I think his name is. There are .pit files there, I believe.
Thanks for all your support guys.
I managed to recover my Galaxy SII I9100 using phistasio's guide.
I do have a similar problem
Hello.
Sorry for taking your time. And for my bad english.
I'm from Lisbon, Portugal and bought a I9100 in May 2011, in a big store that imports cells from Germany.
Trought kies, i've been able to upgrade my I9100 firmware.
Last month i installed an anti-virus (kaspersky). A week later, I was able to uninstall it with Uninstaller App. It was not a good idea - each time i opened the display, I needed to put my password. I was told about this site, where I saw the brand new I9300XXBLG8_I9300OXABLG8_I9300XXLG8, and decided to make an upgrade. Used Odin, and... all right. But, each time I enter kies to see if there was an upgrade, a window apears saying it was not possible to make an upgrade trought kies. To be able to do future upgrades, I tried to change my csc (DBT) to btu, or xeu, but, with samsung galaxy 2/s2 csc, the only csc it showed was dbt (the german csc). So, I tried to put another firmware - this one, from Germany. I found it in this site - I9100GXXLPY_I9100GXXLPV_I9100GDBTLP3.
I put my device in Recovery MODE (Home + Volume up + Power) -> Wipe Data/Factory reset. WHEN THE PHONE WAS OPENING, I took out the battery & put it back in -> put my device into Download MODE (Home + Volume Down + Power) -> put my device into Download MODE (Home + Volume Down + Power) -> clicked PDA and selected *.tar.md5 and clicked START.
After some moments, I got a message of FAIL.
Now, if I try to enter Recovery Mode, I receive a message saying - "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". And, to be able to put this message off, must take the battery out. What did I do wrong? What shall I do?
I know your time is precious to be wasted with this problem. But, please, will you help me?
I thank you very much.

You flashed an i9100G firmware to an i9100. Firmwares are not compatible between these variants.
You also were basing your desire to upgrade on the existence of a firmware for the i9300, which is the galaxy s3.

I thank you for your great help.
I saw my mistakes: the new brand firmware I installed was, not I9300XXBLG8_I9300OXABLG8_I9300XXLG8; but I9100XWLPT_I9100XXLQ6_I9100XEULPA. So, I reinstalled this last one, and the cell is fine
Thank you.
But I'd like to make a very last question - as I said, the cell is fine, but... I'm not able to upgrade it's firmware using Kies. I think it's because the store where I bought my I9100 imported it from Germany - so, its csc is DBT. The csc from the firmware I installed is XEU - don't understand why, but, when I open Kies, in the csc place, it says DBT. I tried to use the CSC Select app, to choose BUT or XEU. but I have no choice - the only csc there is DBT,
As you know all about Android world, could you tell me what shall I do to be able to get upgrades from Kies?
Once again, sorry for my bad english and thank you very much for your help.

No service after flashed jelly blast

Hi all,
Just flashed the jellyblast rom onto my s5830i, it's all working except I've got no signal/service.
I've been reading around and found that I might have to install a radio? If so, does anyone have any help as to which one?
Any help much appreciated, or if you need more info please ask.
Cheers,
Jack.

Well I'm using jelly blast no problem... I'm guessing you're using 3.0.5 (latest) did you first flash 3.0.4? If not i suggest going back to stock then 3.0.4 then .5
You might of had some random conflict if you flashed from another custom ROM to Jelly Blast
Also what do you mean radio?
The app? That's included in Jelly Blast, well it is in 3.0.4 (that's what I'm using)
Oh and apparently I'm now meant to tell people to ask questions and stuff in the sticky thread (The one by "iamareebjamal"), or post this in the jelly blast thread to help keep the general section free from spam
The usual Xx James xX only on mobile (XDA Premium)
I think you've lost your IMEI (don't worry it's not lost, this rom somehow can't read your IMEI number). Please check your IMEI number by using *#06# on call screen.
If you can't see your IMEI number, install GalaxyToolbox and check the IMEI from there. If you can see the IMEI from GalaxyToolbox, it means IMEI is still there but rom can't read it.
Please install any other rom. (you can/should backup your IMEI by using GalaxyToolbox before doing anyting on your system)

Thanks for bricking my phone.....
it doesn't work my phone can't go into CMW or boot now i would be extremely grateful for some help please.
@jrtbing, lets dig some graveyard mate, shall we First of all jellyBlast was band from XDA ages ago ( not to be mention there are far more sophisticated stable Rom @ Dev sub forum)
As for your problem goes, please remove your battery for ~1 Minute ( don't make any difference though, just for discharging purposes ).
put it back and try press and hold the Volume Up + Home keys and then long press the Power key till the start up screen with “Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830i″ logo blinks for two times and you see your desired recovery screen.
If the combo keys provided don't be effective ( due to possible boot loop, corruption of your partitions; kernel ,,etc,,etc,,) we need to check your download mode by pushing (Volume(+) + Volume(-) + Power) simultaneously ,, still no use,, You probably hard-bricked your device mate. USB jig might be your last solution to force your device get into Download mode, nothing will be guaranteed though.

[Q] HELP! Rooted phone stuck in Samsung Galaxy SII screen.

Hello,
Please help!... I am unable to use my phone after doing something that maybe I shouldn't have done!!
First let me go through some steps that led to the phone becoming unusable.
1) First I successfully rooted the phone (using instructions off the net)
2) I tested the rooting by clicking on the SuperSU App and granting the necessary permissions.
3) Next I downloaded the Titanium Backup and successfully backed up my phone
4) Then I decided to go back into the SuperSU (just to see what kind of things I could do with the superuserApp)... and a POP-UP Window appeared. Now I really can't remember the exact message but it basically was asking me if I wanted to perform some sort of conversion. Without giving it too much thought and like an idiot I just clicked on YES. The phone then rebooted and remained STUCK on the screen where the "Samsung Galaxy SII GT-I9100" message flashes up with a yellow triangle exclamation mark below (please see attached pic). It doesn't matter how long I wait or how many times I reboot the phone remains stuck on this screen.
Please note the following:
-- If I press (Volume Up + Home button + Power button) simultaneously the same screen appears (ie the Samsung Galaxy message) however long I keep the buttons pressed.
-- If I press (Volume Down + Home button + Power button) I get something different happening ie A warning message about custom OS (see attached pic) and when I press the Volume Up button to continue I get the screen with the Android symbol and the word downloading below it with some ODIN Mode information at the top of the screen (see attached pic).
I'm praying AND got my fingers arms & legs crossed that I haven't "bricked" the phone!!
Please please help!... I would really appreciate your assistance in getting my phone working again (if it's at all possible now).
Oh and apologies if I have posted in the wrong area.
Many thanks in advance.
Kieron
@Kieron139 as far as I know you have done something to your system which doesnt allows it to fully boot aka soft brick. The yellow triangle is just an download counter a bit. But you can reset that but I only did that when I sold it, triangle is cool.
What you can try is to download Odin on pc, follow odin guide in general I believe for the s2 and flash back to stock.
Tip: dont turn off your phone if download mode failed, just reconnect the cable.
@wulsic ... many thanks for the quick reply!
I have the ODIN program, I used it (with the appropriate jar file) when I rooted the phone. However I'm not sure how to flash is back to stock using the odin program, also I'm new to this site so can you tell me where I can find the odin guide explaining how to do this... or if there is a "how to"thread explaining step by step how to flash back to stock?
Kieron
@wulsic... I managed to find step by step instructions to flash back to stock, however as well as the ODIN program it says I need to have a copy of my stock ROM.... but where do I get this from?
@Kieron139 it tooksome timemy tablet hanged but here is a guide,
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...e-guide-using-odin-de-bloat-root-recover.html
You only need to find the galaxy s2 stock rom from internet and download it, the flash it in pda and see the guide for more details. Make sure you have the s2 firmware not aother one.
Edit: :/ that post timing. But I will find a link for you now.
@Kieron139 here find the s2 firmware from sammobile.com and samsung-updates.com
@wulsic ... that's super! will access the links, download the ROM and let you know how I get on!... but it may take me a little longer than it should as I'm going to take my time and follow the instructions carefully so I don't muck it up lol
@Kieron139 No problem, take the time. Better to do it slowly then bricking your phone. I will respond as fast as I can when you have a question but I can't answer directly maybe when your rom download is done. Goodluck! :good:
@wulsic ... I think I still need your help with identifying the correct stock ROM file. The two links you gave, I couldn't work out how to search for the file in the first one but in the second one when I searched using my model (ie GT-i9100) I got a list of downloads to choose from for different regions. Now I'm based in London UK and the phone is unlocked but was with the Three.co.uk network provider (I'm not sure if this information is relevant but I thought I'd mention it just in case). Anyway I've attached a screen shot of a part of the list that comes up but its not the compete list.
Please note I found another link describing how to flash back to stock and it mentions I need a file called "I9100XWLSW_I9100XXMS2_I9100XEULS5_HOME.tar.md5".
Anyway could you please help me with choosing which firmware file I need to download?
Thanks
@wulsic Ooops forgot to attach the screenshot in prev reply
@Kieron139 in the first one you had to go to firnware, scroll down then enter device.
You dont need the exact android stock version from xwlsw just find a stock one from the 2 sites I provided and then download and flash it. I am trying to find and copy one for you but my tablet keyboard doesnt show up always, lowramdevice.
I see you tagged me again before I could finis typing my message xd.
I suggest to use xwms3 since its the latest stock version and should also work fine with your phone in UK.

Any of the firmwares on the above screenshot should be fine as they all are genuine samsung stock roms for i9100
Download one of them and follow the guide which wulsic posted and you will be fine :good:
@wulsic ...ok will do, and sorry for being a pain! just want to make sure I don't go installing the wrong one
@-shaMe- Thanks
@wulsic Great news!... phones working again! :victory: :good::good::good:
Thank you so much for you help and for your patience!
I now have a working phone again
Best regards
Kieron
@Kieron139 Nice now if you have that problem again you know now how to fix it.
Also an tip for if you start flashing custom roms like cyanogenmod, recovery and kernel are builtin one boot.img so if you flash an recovery for stock but you have cyanogenmod then the rom will not boot anymore. (Cyanogenmod and other custom roms have recovery also builtin their rom.)
If your boot.img is corrupted and recovery/rom doesnt boot anymore then I suggest to flash an recovery with odin instead of reflashing the whole stockrom.
@wulsic ... Thanks for the tip!
Btw I'm still a bit new to this site but how do I "thank" someone for their help?... some sites have a button next to the replies which you can click to say if the reply was helpful, couldn't see anything like that here?
A couple of other quick questions. I'm very happy with my Samsung Galaxy SII but it is frustrating that it no longer receives any software upgrades/improvements. So which custom rom would you recommend? ie is cyanogenmod the best one?... also once a custom rom is installed can the phone still be rooted?
Cheers
K
@wulsic Ignore the "how to thank someone" question in my last message... I wasn't logged in so couldn't see the thanks button!! lol
@wulsic
There's a bunch of custom ROMS mentioned in the link below which will update my phone to android 4.4.4. What do you think of the ROMs and which would you recommend?
K
@wulsic
Ooops forgot to include the link! lol

If you have an SD Card installed, try removing the SD card and then booting the phone.
If that works... then I bet you have a Samsung 128GB MicroSD card???? (if not, maybe another brand 128GB card?)
It seems that there is something in the 7.1.1 boot sequence for the Moto Z's that is hanging during the mount of the SD Card when it is a Samsung 128GB card. Removal of the SD allows a successful boot up.
Once boot up is complete, you should be able to insert the SD card (without rebooting the phone) and the phone will see the SD card and the "missing SD" notification will go away and the phone will function as it always has. It seems that unless Motorola/Lenovo release a patch for this issue, that your only options are 1) remove SD during every reboot, or 2) purchase a different SD card (Motorola seems to recommend SanDisk).
No there is no SD card. The phone is stuck on bootloader.
I had the same issue, stuck on bootloader and error saying recovery could not be read. I rebooted a few times and it eventually went away. Problem is that now my phone acts REALLY weird. And the Software Assistant does NOTHING to help out. It doesn't detect the phone in regular mode and in fastboot, it says everything is fine and doesn't let me restore.
I have a feeling the OTA had a problem installing and a clean slate is the only way to fix it. The only issue is that I can't find a copy of an XT1560-02 ROM anywhere, only other variants.
I had the same issue after update. Recovery could not be validated. I removed the SD card and boom perfect boot. I just hope the issue gets patched soon, would hate to have to carry that Lil key around for if I need a reboot to remove SD card before boot
Same issue. But instead of removing sd card. Just go into recovery mode and wipe cache.
Works
This helped me. If you can fastboot, this may solve your problem:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z/how-to/how-to-update-to-official-7-1-1-moto-z-t3640298
you don't need to root or install TWRP if you don't want to.
I did id, but not luck

Well, i lost my warranty now too.
If anyone could help, pls help us. If anyone know how to pass that step in BL, pls tell us...

Maybe you could provide more information. Have you been on Stock 7.1.1 and tried to unlock your bootloader without allowing Oem Unlocking in developer options? What is the current state of your device, means are you able to get into recovery mode?
7.1.1 Original Stock - Not Allowed OEM Unlocking
Everything was great, but a week ago the cellphone it restarted itself, and never back: It's stuck in bootloop.
I get it with Android 6.0, and i was upgrading via Ota until 1th July, which that means it's 7.1.1 Rom Stock
Cause i wanted have my cellphone pure, i didnt touch anything(I didn't want loose my warranty), so i'm never check to allow "oem unlocking"
Now, warranty doesn't help me because i bought it in Italia, and im living in Argentina now, and they said taht they have Local Warranty.
So, i tried to solved it by my self... I did it with my old phones but they were cheap, so i think is it that why i never have ear about Reset Software Factory Protection.
Brief:
Original Stock 7.1.1
Yes, i tried unlock BL without Allow OEM Unlocking
Yes, i can get in BootLoader and in fastboot without problem
Thank You very much
Maybe a factory reset might help. Switch off your phone. By holding the power button and the volume down button you get into bootloader mode. Tap volume up until you see recovery. Press power to confirm. (If you see the little green android, hold the power button for 2 sec and then press volume up) In the recovery menue select factory reset, if you choose with data wipe, be aware that you'll lose all your data. After that reboot your system. Hopefully it will boot up and you can set it up from scratch.
I did it.

1. What happens, if pull out the ext sd-card and then reboot?
2. Which version of stock rom did you download?
3. Download and install RSD-lite on your pc
http://lenovo-forums.ru/applications/core/interface/file/attachment.php?id=66115
Start RSD-lite on your pc.
Then put your device in bootloader mode and connect it to your pc. Does RSD-lite show, that your device is connected?

That's good. (Sorry for the late reply, it was late and i fell asleep).
As i understood you purchased the device in italy and now you live permantly in argentina. Where did you take the 7.1.1 OTA, in Italy or in Argentina?
With the help of RSD we could try to restore your firmware. Not sure if it works for you in Argentina.
1. Download the NPL25...RETBR stockfirmware from here on your pc https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/griffin/official/RETBR/
2. Extract the zip and search for this file: flashall.xml and remember where to find it.
3. Run RSD on your pc
4. Reinsert your simcard (not the sdcard). Put your moto z into bootloader mode and connect it with your pc. Wait until it gets recognized.
4. Click the three little dots in RSD (left beneath the start button). Now search the flashall.xml file and double click. It will be added to the command field.
5. Click start.
RSD should now flash the firmware onto your device. This takes about 10 minutes. Wait untill your moto reboots completely and you get a PASS notification in RSD.
Hope it works. If not, we have to try plan B.
@acalapone i have edited my post above

I bought three: One to my girlfriend, one to my brother(Both are working perfect, like a charm ¬¬) and the cursed one to me, of course!!
Well, when i read "RETBR" i remember that mine cellphone said "RETEU"(or something like that) in settings, so i have checked in my girlfriend's phone, and yeah, they are RETEU and, in the link that you have shared with me, i found one that said that.
I have downloaded both of them, just in case.
Now i'm have try with RETBR, and it didn't work
Now im going to try "RETEU", and, you know, i'm feeling lucky!
Let's cross our fingers

There is still no RETEU 7.0 available, thats why you have to flash the RETBR.
Try again to flash the RETBR NPL25..firmware with RSD. If you'll get the same failed error message, here is
PLAN B:
Copy the flashall.xml file and rename it to flashallcopy.xml.
Open the copied file with a text editor and delete the 2 lines with "gpt" and "bootloader" in it. Save it and close the copy. With this the RSD program will skip those two commands. Click the 3 dots and add the flashallcopy.xml file to RSD. Click Start.
If that doesn't work, we have to run Plan C
Good luck
