[Q]Volume rocker issues - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I believe I'm having a hardware failure with the rocker buttons. I have to press in certain spots to get the down key to function, and I have to press near the center of the rocker to get the up key to do anything.
It's been a while since an atrix apart, but can do so if needed. Is there anything I can do to attempt to repair this issue w/o ordering new parts? I know weird fixes exist for things like wifi, but not sure about this.
I know it's a hardware problem due to the fact that it's nearly impossible for me to get into recovery, since the keys barely function at all.
Thanks.

you start out by saying "i believe", and end off with "i know". its one or the other. luckily i know of the issue, having had it myself. it is a hardware issue. replace camera flex cable or replace device.

Just want to post an update. I had opened the phone up, and saw where the contacts were in relation to the buttons. The contact was pushed inwards towards the camera, so the buttons were not makign contact. Fixed it by cutting thin strips of plastic and inserting them in between the contacts and the camera. Buttons work like a charm and it was a free fix

[MAYBE FIX?] Home button gone bad

Hi,
Got my s2 pretty much as soon as they were released on o2 and it's been great until now, but the home button has just become 'rattly'. There's more movement and noise before the button engages, as if something has broken underneath it.
Anyone else experienced this?
Just hoping o2 will replace with a new phone, and not refurbished..
Edit:
May have fixed this - I pushed left and right sides of button with both thumbs reasonably firmly (but not hard), and the button seemed to click back into place..
Bought mine on the 5th of may, no noise/rattling here.
Spoke to o2 and they're happy to replace, but have no stock now..

Bit worrying that this isnt an isolated problem.
Would be interested to know how long it takes for it to develop for other people's phones?
It's worse for me on the left side of the button, same for you too?

I noticed this yesterday, too, on the right side. I've had the phone for 17 days.
I've updated the first post with what I think is a fix.
I have this rattling too, noticed it yesterday. Pressing it firmly fixes the issue for some 10-20 clicks - but then it's back again.
Same here.. Often the button clicks but there is no registration only when pressing it firmly it will exucte,
It just started on mine too it seems.
Home Botton issue..
I hate the home button, I like the buttons on the Samsung Captivate better.
I had a issue with my home button, after I put on an aftermarket screen protector. I tried to use water to help apply the protector, and it seemed to have gotten behind the button, causing it not to work after drying. After tearing apart the phone and getting behind the boards I didn't see a way to the button, it seems you have to separate the screen from the frame to get to the electronics behind the frame (most likely destroys the phone). I did notice double-sided sticky tape behind the frame, most likely industrial type.
Put the phone back together and got some Flux-Off that I had for cleaning circuit boards , applied it at the button just as the water got into it. Fixed my issue and the button is making good contact now.
All that just for me to say, it worked better with the older design.
I don't know about your buttons, but mine has stopped rattling. Perhaps some glue needed more time to settle.

[Q] loosy screen, volume buttons problem

I've recently purchased this great device from ebay and found out that the screen is a bit loose on the top. it's only something about 0.5mm and doesn't bother me at all. but the problem is that the volume control external button doesn't sit perfectly on the internal buttons so sometimes you press and they don't work.
I've notified ebay seller and he told me that's a known problem and that he could fix it for me. I just wonder if it's a small fix maybe I can do it on my own and save everyone the hassle of sending it back and fourth.
picture attached.
Mine does the same thing but it affects my proximity sensor. I have to push on the right upper corner when I want to hang up during a call, otherwise, phone thinks my ear is still up against the phone.

haven't tried that yet, so I can't tell if it's a problem.
I've had the same issue, both with the proximity sensor and the volume rocker. For me the top of the rocker is very loose and has to be pressed hard to get it to recognize. The proximity sensor, I found out, has a little cutout adhesive that is supposed to go between the sensor and the digitizer/lcd assembly.
Sometimes this gets shifted (for instance, when someone breaks their screen and decides it's a smart idea to replace it on their own like I did...) and you have to take care to place it back where you found it or you end up having to press the right corner of the screen to end your phone calls.
If anyone figures out how to repair the issue with the volume rocker, hit me up. I'm already knee deep in this thing, I might as well learn something new while I'm at it.

[Q] Broken Volume Button

Here is my question: Does anyone know how difficult it may or may not be to replace the volume button on my Thunderbolt? The volume up button just quit working and I need to replace it. I have found the parts but want to know if this is something that I should be trying to do my self...
Thanks for any assistance,
if it's anything like the HD2, then it's no big deal. on that one you just took out all the screws(including the one that says 'void'), then you need something to pry the front/back apart. i know there's proper tools for this but i ended up just using a razor blade. once the 2 were apart you could see the volume bar & easy just pull it out.
just to let you know though, the actual plastic button itself may not be the culprit, but the piece it's making contact with.
If it's not the volume button; what do you suggest?

if it's not the actual button itself, then it will most likely be the connector that it's making contact with when you press it.
i found this article explaining how to take the Thunderbolt apart(video)

once you know how to take it apart, you'll be able to fix it.

Replace power/screen toggle button?

My Photons power buttons been weird last few days really squishy just doesn't rise back up right completely most of the time and just isn't right.. have a feeling its going to completely go soon. Hoping I can easily replace on my own, no insurance so if it dies looks like time to upgrade if I cant actually fix it on my own. Anyone have any insight on part numbers or anything?
Most people claim to take the rear parts of their photon off and reposition their power button. I wouldn't recommend this unless you feel confident doing so, but don't blame me for any damage! Haha.
I had the same issue ( for a while, randomly fixed itself) and I used a custom ROM w Volume Rocker Wake and a power widget to shut the screen off. I still use these methods regardless my power button working again.

Screen possibly flaking out. Looking for advice.

My screen seems to be touching itself lately. Random phantom clicks are happening, mostly in the area just below the notification bar. It doesn't happen all the time, but I have been unable to pin a potential cause down. If the worst happens, and it goes completely nuts, what would you do? Are there reasonable options for replacement screens? Anyone know what replacement options are offered by Verizon? I have insurance.
Phone is rooted and running JellyBlur. This behavior has persisted through different ROMs, so I don't think it's software related. If I end up taking it in to Verizon, I know I have to return it to stock, and I really don't want to do that if I can avoid it. Thanks in advance for your help.
Update: It seems there's something weird going on when I use the volume keys. It causes the screen to register a press on the top center. Any idea how to go about fixing it, or is it even worth looking at? Used Galaxy Nexus phones aren't that expensive, after all.

Interesting. I have had the same problem, but it's intermittent and very rare. I discovered it when I had set the keyboard to allow volume keys to move the cursor while typing. Pressing one of the volume keys resulted in unwanted characters appearing. The same volume key press kept producing the same unwanted characters.
Unfortunately, I don't have any ideas.
I had a similar issue and ended up buying a used TBolt on ebay for $60. A replacement LCD/digitizer combo is about the same price. I went with the whole unit so I could make the transition with little downtime, but swapping the screen out of these phones is really simple.
