[Q] Exchanging internal SD? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
My galaxy S2 recently died due to minor water damage. Now I ordered a S4, but I would like to know whether it's possible to recover photos from the internal SD card. To be clear: the phone doesn't power on anymore at all. My girlfriend also has a Galaxy S2, and I was thinking of exchanging some phone parts to access the broken one's internal memory. Some things I've been thinking of:
1. Switch mainboards. This would only be useful if the internal SD card is not soldered to the mainboard. Could someone tell me whether this is the case?
2. I read on a website the following:
As the chips are directly soldered to the smartphone’s mainboard and can be made to specially interface with the SoC used, but sometimes companies don’t solder user-accessible internal storage to the mainboard, instead putting a micro-SD card in a hidden slot. Examples are phones like Samsung Galaxy S2 and HTC Desire HD.

This implies that I could simply take out this internal SD card and switch it with the other phone. Is anyone familiar with this?
My girlfriends phone has to remain working in the end, mine is broken already and I don't care whether it breaks even more..
Thanks in advance!

Samsungs are soldered, it's an actual chip. And just don't go there. The possibility that you'll completely stuff it up beyond repair is high unless you do this sort of thing for a living (and you'd have to source the chip from a 2nd hand board anyway, might as well do the easy thing & replace the board).
You've got it the wrong way around re: motherboard. This is exactly what service centres replace when n00bs come in & say 'I went to sleep & my phone didn't wake up (I was trying to flash a custom rom to my phone but flashed a rom for the I9000 by mistake).
Either replace the motherboard yourself (source a 2nd hand one from a 'donor' or broken phone online somewhere), or find the board & pay a local mobile repair shop to do it. That's should fix it assuming nothing else is water damaged, which you're only going to know if you either take it to someone who can diagnose, or you swap the motherboard out.
Or you can throw it in the bin.

what happened? were you able to recover the photos and contacts? I have a similar situation, shall I try replacing the motherboard?

[Q] Plz Help - Broken Memory Card Stuck Inside the SGS2 Memory Slot!!!

Dammm...this is my yet another Frequent rerun of my Bad days!
Brought a Samsung 16Gb Class6 MHCSD online, arrived today in perfect condition, was going to install,...& while in install(putting it in) it broke...yes it broke half way in two pieces....OMFG...i simply cant belive it, before my eyes it was in parts(is quality nowdays so poor & wafer thin, touch to break).....& the worst thing the pin contact part/piece is damn stuck inside & in NO WAY coming out!
Tried various ways but in vain, took it to nearest Samsung showroom...& they could not also retrieve it &get it out!..local Samsung service centre already closed for tonight so couldn't go there but contacted the engineer over phone...he told me to come by tomorrow morning so he can see what he can do!
Now,i'm (having already lost money on the card & the broken part stuck inside) is having the worst experience of this episode
So can u the better knowing guys or someone with a similar experience guide me if there is anything possible(any trick/method) to get this jammed broken card out by myself .........or is doing any more thing putting greater risk to the crisis? (Samsung showroom advised me not to try anything more by myself)?
I just want the broken part out w/o taking it to service centre & unscrewing the back part just to get the damn broken part out!
* for the card,i don't think,i can claim for warranty (i'm in India)
Is there any good idea for me for now b4 going to the service station??....plz do help!
TIA !
* Mods may place the question in appropriate section deemed fit,if needed!
Even if you take the phone apart I believe the microSD card slot is covered by a metal flap that I am not sure if you can remove easily, and if they notice you have taken it apart I think that voids your warranty.
If i was you I would just take it to the service centre tomorrow and see what you say, if you are lucky they may do it for free.
(You must have used quite some force to snap a microSD card in half, those things are small but tough!)
yes,i would be taking it to the Samsung Service Centre tomorrow for what they can do(free/paid), meanwhile have tried it with tweezers, toothpick ,sewing needle, safety [email protected] but the darn thing simply refuses to come out!
Wonder whether i have damaged it further by all such tries?
job done at Samsung service centre... 1 min simple job(opened the back side though). all in front of me.. but everything is working best as b4(no tamper).

[Q] SGS2 NOT Reading any MSDHC Card ! Help plz Asap !

I have got a Big issue with my SGS2.My sgs2 is NOT reading any micro sd hc card .Whichever card i put in ,it is showing as a blank card! (sometimes even as "damaged car") It is also not mounting any card nor formatting any card! The same card showing as a blank or damaged on my sgs2 is being read perfectly in my other phones. Also formatting the card in the p.c does not help, still showing as "blank card".Even on connecting the sgs2 to the p.c as mass storage, the external msd card is not shown. I'm quite sure that it is a problem with the hardware,i.e the micro sd slot in the phone which is giving errors.
*There was once a problem of a previous msdhc card being broken into two pieces & stuck inside the msdhc slot of this phone which had 2 be brought out with some force at the samsung service centre & the engineers said there might be some problems regarding msdhc card in future with the phone as the micro contacts/channels took a bit of ruffle !
I now doubt the problem has arisen from there..just my very very bad luck ! So my Main question here is...can the external microsd SLOT of sgs2 be repaired/fixed or do i have to replace the entire inner pcb(very costly) ???. I'm too disappointed ! Previously also, sometimes the sgs2 would freeze out of no reason & i had to reboot & then also i got a notification of blank card in the sgs2, but the issue got resolved upon reinserting it back in the memory slot after multiple attempts,...but this time, nothing is working for making the card/& its contents being read by the phone.PLZ plz help!
My sgs2 is under warranty! & microsd card is a New Samsung 16gb class6 msdhc card.My Rom is stock GB 2.3.3 Samsung release for India, which was pre installed on purchase of the sgs2! Other than this ,there r no problem in the phone! Would this issue be covered under warranty? Plz reply & help asap pals!

So many views....no reply....i honestly thought u ppl can help or guide me :\
just returned from the Samsung Service centre!....well my Bad luck, there is indeed a problem with the memory card slot at the hardware level as they (samsung service engineers) have confirmed after opening the back cover..the memory card slot has broken(the tracks/channels have taken damage) and r not recognising any MSDHC card for the matter(the samsung guys tried their card themselves, but it made no difference, as all the cards are shown as "Blank card" !) . My Bad : (
Now at this point they r saying that the memory slot needs to be changed for this problem to be solved, either by just singly replacing "alone" the SD memory card slot which is integrated within the pcb , ......... or replacing the "entire" pcb of the SGS2 which along with this 'damaged' memory slot also houses the dual core processor, mali-400 gpu ,camera, etc etc of the phone which are in perfectly Great condition!.
So,Long story short,...they have given me two choices :
1) Replacing just the external SD Memory Slot of my Sgs2 within warranty (samsung service insists on doing this, & for them it would be a perfect job,not to worry)
2) Replacing the entire expensive PCB of my SGS2 altogether (where 99% parts r in perfect condition) but which would be above all chargeable!
As of Now, they(Samsung) don't have the replaceable external SD Memory slot for the sgs2 in stock,so they have ordered the same for me & have told to come back by this weekend when the job would be probably done !
Now,pals, & mobile tech experts here who really knows & may have similar experience, i very much want your honest advice in this ,as to what i should be doing here? which choice as i pointed above would best & Pragmatically serve my purpose without putting my otherwise perfectly performing SGS2 to any untoward risk & damage. If u ppls were in my place,Would you be assured enough to put trust on a Samsung Service Engineer((whom the samsung service centre calls their best & proficient enough to do the job)) for doing a pcb level job on one of your most expensive & loved device? Is it a much risky job or can they properly handle it,(take samsung's word of a good replacement job at their face value)..do they usually have the expertise in doing such a job, particularly for a complicated device like SGS2? or is it that ...Replacing the pcb of the sg2 the only way out? What do you guys think?
So,Please Help to guide me with your most valuable inputs Asap,...as i honestly need them now!!! I would be much grateful to all those who reply !
Thanks

well i think u have left with no choice but to trust the samsung engineers and get ur external sdcard slot replaced since its still under warranty
even if something goes wrong while doing the same they have 2 give u fully functional phone and hence they might replace the PCB board itself
so go ahead and get it serviced for the same ASAP ma8

[Q] Dead sgs3, want data recovered

Phone basically died on me. Read online and seems I have a faulty chipset on the motherboard which fried on me. Sudden Death Syndrome, no response at ALL.
Thinking of changing the motherboard, but want my internal memory recovered as I never used an external memory card nor backed my information. Is it possible to still get that data? I was thinking to swap the memory chip from the old board into the new one.
If it is even possible, or there are other easier ways to get it done, please tell me! Desperate!

Not possible sorry. An SDS is a complete eMMC failure so the data there is either corrupted or has been completely wiped.

[Q] Galaxy SII data recovery (dead power chip)

Hello guys.. new to the forum (first post) but a fan for awhile.
i have a samsung galaxy s2 with a dead power chip.
Does anyone have a clue or an idea about how to save the data on the internal memory?
i'm up for almost everything..
No chance, other than a company who specialises in recovery of data from dead HDD's; expect this to be very expensive if possible. However...there are some people on here who claim replacing the 'power IC' is possible, but I still haven't seen a single case on here where that's been successful/a motherboard replacement hasn't been required to fix (the normal fix).
Search for similar threads, someone posted here recently somewhere where you could buy the part.
The other issue is, if there's other components dead on the NB, you're going to have to end up replacing it at anyway, so you run the risk of 'double paying' for the fix if replacing this individual component doesn't work (and assuming you can even find a repairer who will attempt this for you).

[Q] Samsung S2 GT-i9100G cannot be turned on/dead

Hello every-xdadeveloper-one~ here i would like to ask questions about my S2 GT-i9100g
My phone is dead. No download mode, recovery mode, usb connection, odin recognition, kies detection, charging, turning on, nada. Meaning in whatever it is, it is not responding to anything.
I would like to ask some professional help here in xda; what has happened to my phone? Is it the emmc? power supply failure? or anything related to it? i really need to know any related things that i'll be dealing with before going to the last step, service repair. it is working fine, i have rooted, unrooted, cyanogenmod and stock, cwm and stock, but none of this has given any problems until one day when it is charging, it suddenly turned off forever.
Please tell me any related things of what has happened.
note: i used a few PIT files when flashing before this, and i'm not sure which is which for the mobo. and few months back before the s2 is totally dead, it keeps on turning off by itself even when full battery, but still workable.
Probably the EMMC, but without having the phone in front of us with the tools to diagnose it, nobody here can tell you this for certain. Fix will be motherboard replacement (assuming you intend to keep this phone & not get a new one).
Take it to a Samsung service centre (more expensive option), or source a 2nd hand motherboard online & either swap the boards yourself, or pay a local mobile repair shop to do it (cheaper option).
Well i just bought a phone from amazon and got it monday it had half battery when i got it so i put it on the charger A hour later it was dead so dead that it wont even charge i tryed diffeent plugs different chargers still nothing what could it be ???
^^^
What model; I.E sticker on the phone chassis under the battery, what does it say ?
I guess it is :crying: Heard there is a workaround that maybe the balls beneath the emmc is like problematic? Maybe i need to reheat it a few seconds and cool it instantly to MAYBE get it able to turn back on? Changing a new board is not an option as important work flowcharts are in the internal storage. I guess service repair of the emmc is needed. Hmmm.
Is it possible that wrong PIT files be the culprit that made all this?
You won't be recovering any data regardless of how you proceed.
You can't 'repair' the EMMC, and it's not feasible to just replace the EMMC (and even if it was, your stuff is on there which means you lose it anyway), replacement of the board is how you proceed. Even if it was possible to replace just the EMMC, you'd probably end up paying 3-4 times the cost of having the entire board replaced due to the cost of labour (swapping a board takes 10 minutes).
If a PIT was the problem, the problem would have occurred immediately after the PIT flash I.E you would have flashed the PIT, and the phone wouldn't have booted immediately after. It's a simple case of component failure, which happens with all electronics all the time. I'm always surprised by how people on here seem to find this incredible. Stuff breaks, simple really.
The only possible very rough chance you have of recovering any data is a company who specialises in recovery of data from dead HDD's, they may be able to help, though very unlikely. If they are able to help, expect this to be very expensive. I have not seen a single post from anyone who has contacted one of these companies & been able to recover data from a phone in this state in the over 2 yrs I've been here.
Thank you for the info. Now i guess the only choice to do, is to repair(replace the mobo), or go buy a brand new s2(or higher models). I will check if there is any way to retrieve the data inside, and i dont mind the cost. :good:
