[Q] VZW Dev. Edition- Use same roms? Recoveries? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Can the Verizon Galaxy S4 Developer Edition use the same roms and recoveries as the standard Verizon S4? (TL;DR version)
Found this duplicate thread (more or less)- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2346979
Moderators can remove this thread. (I promised I had searched really hard first!!!)
I understand the bootloader workaround on the standard S4 (patched in the latest OTA update) used some sort of Loki exploit, which obviously wouldn't be necessary for this phone. Would a custom recovery for the Dev. edition need to be modified to remove that exploit? I can't seem to find any sub forums or really anything targeted specifically at the Dev. edition. I realize it hasn't been out for very long, so let me know if things just haven't picked up yet (or if I'm asking a dumb question and things will 'just work'). I've done a lot of searching and can't turn anything definitive up, except some scattered instructions on rooting. Maybe we could get a subforum specific for the Dev. edition?
On a random side note, I feel so odd realizing I've been registered since 2010 and have made 3 posts since then. Consider this my 'hoping to get more active in the community' post. I've spent so much time modding my OG droid, Bionic, and finally my Gnex, I guess I just got comfortable and didn't really need to ask any questions, lol. I've been thinking so hard about moving our family to T mobile. After the GSM Nexus got twice the screen on time as the VZW Nexus, I figured conditions would stay that way, but I can see the VZW S4 is getting just as good screen on time. It would cut our bill down from $408 to $180 (plus insurance if we want that, never really needed any claims), but Verizon just has such good and widespread coverage, plus we have 4 unlimited data lines. I've gotten addicted to crack flashing with my Nexus (the Bionic was like a padded jail cell...), and I'm hoping the Dev. edition can keep me happy! :fingers-crossed:
I could wait and hope that a new exploit comes out and buy the 32 GB standard version, since it appears that a 32 GB Dev. edition isn't going to happen. However, I remember the torture of using bootstrap on the bionic, especially if I got a bad flash, and I would hate to get into the cat-and-mouse game iPhone users play with Apple's updates. FolderMount seems acceptable to me.

[Q] How to keep my apps before I return the Atrix?

I'm returning my Atrix and I was wondering how I keep the apps I bought from the Market? Do I have to back them up with Titanium or will the market remember that I bought the apps and just let me reinstall them on a different phone as long as I sign in to the market as the same user?
Market will remember as long as you use the same credentials to set up your new phone.
Appbrain.com is the computer version of the Android Market. You can sync your device to the website and vise versa. You can backup and save the apps that you have downloaded and bought and then quickly download them again.
https://market.android.com/ is the computer version of the market, appbrain.com is a 3rd party site.
Excellent, thank you all. Atrix goes back tonight.

I am curious, why are you sending the atrix back? What are you getting to replace it?

Returning it because the bootloader is locked with no crack in sight, and at&t screwed us on hsupa. Motorola's new update removes root and devs are leaving the Atrix so that should throw red flags up. I don't want to be stuck with this locked Atrix for 2 years and only get updates when motorola gets around to it and then having to hope I can root after every little update. I'm not happy with them locking me out of it so I'm not supporting motorola. Botched recalled updates etc. I'm getting the inspire 4G to replace it and I will be able to Tinker with roms all I want! Hardware wise I love the Atrix. I'll miss tegra games and the high res screen but that's it. Moto and at&t crippled it. Sad. Such Huge potential.

Unfortunately, I am returning my Atrix tonight as well - day 27 of purchase. This is my first Android phone but I feel like I'm missing out on some of the best aspects of the XDA community and features of Android, in general. I like the Atrix, but not enough to keep it for two years on contract with most likely very meager updating by Motorola in the future. I also have some gripes about the hardware.
I consider this my introductory Android experience and absolutely love the OS. I love it so much, that I want to be able to experience more of it!
I agree with everything you said, except for the Inspire. Since I sold my iPhone 4 (for a nice profit!), I will be using an old school Razr until something of interest comes along. The Inspire does not seem to warrant the use of my upgrade eligibility.
Also debating jumping ship altogether from AT&T. This whole HSPA thing, while not a deal breaker, certainly left a very bitter taste in my mouth. I have recently found AT&T store reps to be uninformed and fairly rude, especially on the phone. I have been a loyal customer since 2000.
I hope that the current locking trend we've seen from HTC and Motorola is not a sure sign of the future of Android. One of the main reasons I left my iPhone behind was because I enjoy tinkering with my phone a lot, and the Android OS is so well suited for it!
It seems like developer support is a key factor in ensuring the longevity of a device, far after the hardware company has moved on. I don't like to buy phones continuously off contract and I would like to ensure that my phone stays developmentally relevant for the duration off my contract.
This may not be the proper forum for this response, but I just felt the need to vent and am interested in hearing what you guys have to say. Not trying to bad-mouth the Atrix for those who like it, it's just not quite the Android experience I hoped for.
You need a nexus one

You know, as we veer rapidly off topic, I have to say that while I've been disheartened by the shackles put onto this "open" OS of Android by Motorola and while I too am waiting with baited breath for someone to hack open the bootloader, not a day goes by that I'm not happy I switched away from the iPhone to move to an Atrix. While I agree that while the "4G" is still nowhere to be seen and that the locked bootloader is a pain, this is still twice the device my iPhone 4 ever was, especially as the Android OS doesn't treat all its users like they're half brain-dead and completely lacking any technical knowledge. I'm happy to say I'll be keeping my Atrix.
I'm unsure if I'm keeping my Atrix. I'm still within the 30 days - I love the phone, but some of the things I tend to do are things I can not do without access to the bootloader.

I concur!!!
People are saying that kholk is working on unlocking the bootloader. Last I heard of Da_G, he was working on it too.
Something you guys might find interesting is the white nexus s that has access to the AT&T 3G bands.
Anyways, on topic: Backup your apps using TiBu to your external sd-card. Then plop the new card into your phone, and restore.

what exactly can we do from unlocking the bootloader
read above a 5th grade level for one (some can do this without an unlocked bootloader)

coming from a nexus one

Honestly and seriously ...I've been with the nexus one for almost 2 years and looking into an upgrade.
I don't want the Galaxy nexus or the sg2.

I was initially looking to get the galaxy nexus, after all the delays and needing a new phone as the old one died, went for the galaxy note and am loving it even though it's still on gingerbread. Rooted it, loaded a lite rom, speedier kernel, got rid of most of the Samsung crap and just sitting and waiting for an ics build to pop up.

Hmm....great input..
Not really impressed by the development progress of the razr ..not sure if its a good idea?

The phone has only been out for a month. It takes a bit to get some momentum, but honestly, I'm loving the RAZR with a simple root, and some small tweeks.
I'm looking forward to ICS, but am more than happy with the phone as is, and could be pleased for a few months while the development catches up.
The lack of perceived development is due to two things IMO...
1. Locked boot-loader
2. Another great phone (SGN) being released at the same time.
Motorola really messed up by locking this boot-loader while another very "open" phone was being released around the same time and by looking at the forums it's quite obvious. Considering the above though, the development here has been pretty decent thanks to a bunch of dedicated pro's.

According to what I've read, the Nexus, while on Verizon, the contract is actually under Google's control. Hence, the unlocked bootloader. It was Google's requirement that the phone come to the market open.
Motorola, on the other hand, is restricted like HTC & other Samsung devices on Verizon's network. HTC originally stated they would release a tool, but then Verizon forbade it, and the Rezound was fully locked as well.
Samsung's phones are almost always locked down, it just so happens they're easier to hack, but they don't support development very well, so even with it unlocked, you end up with very poor support.
HTC never releases their source code (at least from what I've read) so it's hard to get a working custom rom that's 100% on their phone.
I've owned 3 Motorola Droid phones, and the last two have been great for development. My mom also owns another one in the Droid X, and it too was easy to flash, and had plenty of support from the community due to the source codes being available.
If I can teach my mom how to flash a custom ROM on her phone, it can't be THAT hard to do, and the support I get when she has an issue, is better than Verizon offers in store.
As for Motorola messing up, maybe it's on timing, but really it's not their fault the phone came locked down. They actually were pushing for open devices first, by offering the OG Droid, and then offering the Xoom with an unlocked bootloader, and announcing it wanted to unlock bootloaders in late 2011.....it's just Verizon shoved it back in their face.
So if anything blame Verizon for this.
hmm, my problem is that i really don't want a Samsung phone. The SG2 is will become outdated and most ppl have that (i want to be different).
I've thought of the Note, i like big, but found it unpractical.
What else? Lenovo?
Any new phones around the corner? What's after the Razr?

I'm a keyboard guy myself, so I'm getting ready for the Droid 4 which should be coming out any day now, and am probably going to give my RAZR to my wife, as she likes the screen, and her OG droid is getting really long in the tooth.
After that, there's a new HTC "Zeta" was rumored recently as well as the "ville".
Really, you kind of have to wait till CES for more phones after Christmas. CES is Jan 10-14th, and there will be quite a few new phones that are announced there.
I am also coming from a N1, been using it for 2 years. No big problems except the lack of internal memory (even thought I'm using S2E, but still...) and couldn't play much games on the phone...
The Razr looks very nice! The CPU is the same one as the GN, but with much better designs and build. So I also seriously consider this phone too. But as a top of the line phone the graphic seems a little weak, even compare to SGS2(which is out almost half year now). So I'm a llittle worry about this....Maybe we will have to keep using our trusty N1 at least till the end of CES in Jan.
I agree with garlick2. The first thing I did was to root this phone. However, this is the first Android phone that I have had that I have been happy with right out of the box. I have made a few minor customizations, but nothing major.

Are the days of the regular vzw s3 development completely done already?

So I pre-ordered a VZW S3 like many people, before I knew the bootloader was locked. It annoys me to no end but I can't leave verizon because of the family plan and I really don't want to send the phone back because it looks amazing I have faith in this community. I am wondering however, does the release of the dev edition from samsung along with a lot of people jumping ship (what I perceive to be early but maybe not) completely kill my hopes and dreams of having a similarly awesome experience with my possibly* future S3 as my incredible? I've been amazed by my incredible's capabilities thanks to this forum and I really wouldn't be surprised to sign on anytime soon and see that one of you android super ninjas pwnd vzw and opened up the s3, full access but I don't have $600 to drop on a phone if that's going to be the ONLY way to play around with a vzw s3. Not sure if full access is even realistic at this point but if some competent people are still working on it, then I don't want to cancel my preorder..

[Q] Get the GS4 now or wait for possible HTC One?

Hi, I know there are probably a lot of threads like this, but I really need some help deciding here. Right now I am on Verizon and I have some crappy slider phone and have never owned a smartphone before. I own an iPod Touch and Nexus 7 so I know how both IOS and Android are. Personally, I prefer android which is why I decided to originally get the Galaxy S4. Today, I heard many stories of how the HTC One might be making its way to Verizon. I need you guys to help me decide if it is worth it to wait on the possibility of the HTC One coming to Verizon or just get the GS4 right away. Never owning a smartphone before makes me very impatient, which is sort of a problem.
Basically, is there any chance of the One coming to Verizon in your opinion, and if so, when do you think it will happen, and is it worth the wait? I also should note that I like to root and install custom roms, so if you think a certain phone will have better rom support over the other, let me know. Thank you and I look forward to your responses.
Edit: I had a chat session with Best Buy Mobile and when I asked if the One will be coming to Verizon, this was their response. I am not sure if they are reliable, but since they do work with Verizon, I kinda got some trust in them. Here is the screen shot. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1484678/Proof.PNG

Right now there's nothing saying the phone will come to Verizon, for sure. Chances are 50/50 on whether it will or won't. Waiting for it to happen might be a fruitless effort.
HTC generally allows unlocking of their devices with a tool (straight from them). That's great, but the Galaxy S4 has already been unlocked...so it's kind of a non-issue. Rooting and custom roms can be done now, very easily. I'd say just pick up a GS4 and enjoy it.

Thanks for your input, I will keep those reasons in mind. I updated the topic with a conversation I had with Best Buy Mobile.
The S4 will have much more support for custom roms. I hear there are some build quality issues with the HTC One. I have the S4 on Verizon and if we had the One in Black I'd buy that too However, I have more confidence in the S4 with quality control and support.
I'm hoping T-Mobile gets the One in Black because I will get it and use that as my work cell I love the feel of a premium handset in my hand like the iPhone 5. That's the ONLY reason I am considering the One as a future purchase. The feel of it.

Th HTC One obviously has a superior hand feel and design. Sense vs TouchWiz is a toss up to me, as they are both abominations in my mind.
However, the feel and industrial design of the S4 is not nearly as bad as I'd anticipated. It's definitely do-able for most users.
The big deciding factor for me, what eliminated the HTC One from contention, is the battery life in the GS4. By all accounts I've read, the battery life is considerably superior on the Samsung phone. My own experience in the short time that I've had this phone backs up those accounts - it lasts for quite a long time.

You would also be better off asking this General OT section rather than asking about an HTC phone in a Samsung device forum.

The deciding factor for me was lack of a user-replaceable battery in the One, and no SD card slot. S4 has both those, so, easy decision

Root for LG-H900 (AT&T)?

Hello! It has been 5 months since I purchased my trusty LG V10, but I am a little bit disappointed at the lack of development for the AT&T and Verizon models. I understand that developers have better things to do besides try to find root for a device that not a lot of people even use, but is there anyone out there? I saw what happened to the Paying (and Praying) forum, I enjoyed looking at it from Day to day. I switched to the LG V10 after I had enough of not being able to do just about anything on the iPhone 5c. I was pressured into buying it at the store by one of the employees, and I was originally going to go with a LG G4, but it seemed better. Now I would take root over 1 more GB of RAM to be honest. Also, what happened to Marshmallow? I was looking forward to it when I heard it released, but now it has been almost a year since it came out... I know there must be a way to get the boot loader unlocked, but I don't know how, I would like to become a Developer for this phone, but I don't know where to learn.
Sorry, this has turned more into a rant than anything else, but just voicing my concerns.
There is already a thread started and active in the correct location on this subject here. No need to start anew.
