Am considering KI8 but holding back - is there any point if ICS is round the corner?
I can't find much solid info on when ICS will be available for the S2... Anybody know if we'll see it inside of a month or so?
tia!
Surely it will depend when the source code is released? That's assuming they do as they didn't with honeycomb
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
ICS isn't even related yet, i would imagine the sgs2 will get ics, how quick is anyone's guess.
Team hacksam will work in it, but it's a whole new version and will take time for them to port it when then source hits.
They said they wouldn't release the honeycomb sources to stop people putting it on phones and giving everyone a bad experiance, we ics is gingerbread+honeycomb we should get sources again.
Again, how soon, no one knows, depends how much has changed, aka how hard it is for the cm guys to port, or how fast samsung are.
So go for ki8, you shouldn't need to wipe between stock roms versions, i hear it's supposed to be faster than ki3.
Goodness knows when the next leak will be.

Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
for me there doesnt seem much point in going for Ki8, not because ICS may turn up but because every rom thread ive read based on it seems to be quite buggy. Im sticking with Ki3 until something comes out that adds something new
I havent used KI3 so I can't compare.
Im using KI8 and havent stumbled over any bugs.
Device is fast, stable and smooth, even when underclocked at 800 using setCPU.
Using chainfires rooted stock KI8 kernel.
Best battery life I've had on this device so far. Have frozen the usual apps tho.
My opinion..worth it.

With all the kernels and releases coming out, what is the general consensus on when ICS ROMs will be considered stable or feature-complete?
Was the recent i777 leak what developers were looking for to complete/optimize ICS ROMs? Or are we still waiting on i777 kernel source? Is Entropy's kernel a long-term solution?
Just wondering when to flash.
Thanks forum.

But I remember being schooled about "oh we need i777 kernel source before we get ICS" whenever I inquired. We don't seem to have i777 source, but i9000 is good enough?
Let me rephrase my question, how much better will the current ROMs get when i777 kernel source is released? Will we see an AOSP ROM?

I have yet to find a single bug running Shoman's rom. Your mileage may vary, read the thread et cetera but if you're asking when to flash I'd just go for it.
+1 on Shoman's ICS rom. It has operated flawlessly for me.
I9100 source is what we needed. We're only a little bit behind I9100 now. I9100 ICS has some nasty stability problems, I'm hoping to fix them before releasing DD for ICS. I'm working with gokhanmoral and a few others on it, it's not I777 unique.

SHOstock ICS rom is amazingly stable and already in 5th release with more on the way
CM9 now has nightly builds for I-777. I fell in love with CM7 and am really liking the official CM9 nighty builds so far.
ICS leak
The ICS i777 leak, which has been bundled as a cwm zip without bootloaders
is working good for me with only a few minor bugs
alarms not working
wifi only scans after toggle
battery stats graph crashes
I don't know how this compares to i9100, the ICS leak is the first I've tried.
It's stable enough for me to not look back and stick with ICS
I'd definitely recommend SHOstock2, it's head and shoulders above the ATT leak in a lot of ways and I haven't had a single crash or noticed any bugs since installing RC4.

I agree with the uclc2 leak, I had the following issues: Titanium Backup would not install any of my games+data and 1/2 my apps would not install. From what I could tell were any of the apps and games that I had moved over to sd card would not be restored under the leak. Than all of a sudden, my phone had locked up after getting most of my apps *from the batch restore missing apps and data* and quit even getting service when wifi was on and try to turn off wifi = lockup/reboot. Really weird after 4 hours of running it. Under SHOstock2 Rc4 everything restored properly and even upgrading to rc5 which gave back the multi toggle options and running very stable. Zero issue with it.
HTH,
Charlie
I've been running LilChris's phone-bricker with zero problems. Restored apps and data using tibu. Fast and smooth.

Been running the AOKP build from Ported Dev thread with no major problems. Only problem is that when I am listening to music and a text or notification comes in, the music volume is lowered by 2 notches, then when I try to turn it up it goes by about 3 notches. Its a balancing act to get the volume back. Thats my only grippe. I havent had much time to read so I dont know if the newer ICS roms have fixed that issue.
It seems like all the ROMs have a few little glitches. Is there an ICS ROM that can record video at 1080p? Or connect to a 5GHz AP? Or has HDMI/MHL functionality?
I'm switching to the first one that does all 3. I'd be really excited if we can get NFC too.

Yea I now see why the mods are so close-happy in this sub-forum. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to invoke a flood of ROM-reviews by starting this thread. All I had wanted was a general outlook of ROM-stability coming from official leaks and releases.
Well, all the Sense 4 ROMs drain my battery like its nobody's business, and personally I really don't seem to like Sense anymore. I know that newtoroot came out with an AOSP rom awhile back in like February, but has anyone been working on one since? And I know people "claim" to have AOSP roms but all of them are still using sense's SystemUI, so im looking for a FULL AOSP rom. thanks to anyone who can help.

Since this is a pretty touchy subject... I'll handle it.
We do not have full functioning AOSP roms. The rezound has very difficult tech to reverse engineer. The AOSP roms that do exist all have no data, text, or call capability. Not even wifi. A few have tried to work on getting AOSP over but either stopped in the hopes that the ICS OTA stuff will help or they just dumped the rezound completely. I just hope you don't get flamed.
What hurts the rezound, was that everyone was expecting to get it and then immediately switch to ICS so the gingerbread development lacked a lot. And leaks don't really help us at all as far as ICS goes. Here we are 8 months after the debut of ICS and we are still left out in the cold.
There are a few people still trying to make AOSP happen, but for now, senseless is as close as you'll get.

I'm not gonna get flamed. But newtoroots AOSP Rom was so close to perfect, ril worked, everything ran perfectly, except for a few bugs here and there. I would love if some awesome dev out there would take that Rom, fix it up, and put it on the forums. That's my two cents. Thanks for the feedback man.

Let's not flame this guy. Let's turn this into a productive thread about AOSP even though we have scattered comments about AOSP/AOKP/CM in random threads.
Chad is working on RIL issues in his upcoming kernel. Chad is an extremely busy student so don't expect anything soon although he has gotten calls/sms/1x data working.
We really don't have an updated version of CM9 or AOKP but since we don't have data for them yet, there is no reason to make a ROM bot for them automatically compiling roms nightly.
OK now let's get productive. We have GB source. I don't understand why we don't have a CM7 rom yet. Well, I didn't understand why until I tried do compile/port one myself. I am not an expert at compiling from source especially when our device isn't officially supported but my port won't boot past the splash screen. I am thinking about putting the port up in the dev section and turning it into a community project. I have tried the Demonizing AOSP kernel and I have compiled multiple CM7 kernels from source but still no booting.
I know CM7 is GB based but it's better than nothing at least until we get ICS source.

Yes but it would be much much easier to fix because we has source. Chad even said that 99% of the issues is just rearranging libraries in the kernel.

Stock rooted most stable and is the best rom for this phone imo. ARHD was my favorite deodexed.
If you want mods and a different aosp look.. you can do all that yourself on one of the two above with flashable mods and nova launcher.
Its probably best to read up on all of the ROMs and try them yourself to make your own judgement. This thread will just lead to a few devs shouting out their own roms and their fans following close behind. I know this because this isnt the first time a thread like this has appeared. Im sure u searched before posting though so no worries

For ICS, I'd suggest ARHD (as previously posted). However, for Gingerbread, I'd suggest BulletProof. BulletProof is what I was running prior to migrating to ICS.

I tried most if not all ROMs. If you want ICS I say go with NRGs stock Rom with faux new kernel. Been my daily driver for a few months now except the kernel that just dropped. If your gonna be on GB then I also 2nd Bulletproof.
Patiently waiting for some CM9 or 10. Which looks like we'll probably have by August, September.

Whether you use energy with or without stock look, it is the rom I keep going to.. I never have issues with it. I debloat the hell out of it mind you, I don't leave rosie or any other sense feature, but as far as stability, battery, etc is concerned, it is my default rom of choice, and I have tried them all pretty extensively.
If you get the latest build you have to make sure to increase the minimum clock speed to 384 which just requires two little edits in the init.post_boot.sh file in the system/etc directory.
And despite what GG said, even tho I love him(no homo), I am not a fanboy by any means..
I use hd revolution on sensation and amaze. On amaze, it will give you out of box ui but in back processes, lot of optimization were made.

Used ARHD when I had my amaze 4g and never used anything else, that was when it only had GB though, now that I got a GNex, I'm still using ARHD, one of the best Roms out there, no problems whatsoever, stable, and Mike is an all around great guy who puts much care into his Roms. (Not to say that others don't, I've used so many Roms its unbelievable, just like everyone else, and all devs are AWESOME!!!)

Engery Rom is thee best choice
Energy Rom is the best in my opinion. I tried both clean rom and ADRHD or whatever it is call. I like Energy because it is Stable. Battery life to me is awesome, especially when I use my hotspot, Bluetooth and playing Poweramp plus I do play games and etc... Anyways that what I would recommend. Personally choose whatever fits your needs and do not go based off what we say. Remember the most popular rom for the Amaze may not be the best or work for your phone. Not all phones are created the same.

Honestly, I'v been wondering the same thing. But considering that there are only the slightest hints of it on the CM forums and that there's not even a prototype in the nightlies, I'm going to say there's going to be some more wait time. If you want a good combination on kernel and rom to use in the meantime, though, the unsecure kernel and the UKB rom are very nice.

Radio Interface Layer
CyanogenMod is based on the stock AOSP roms directly from google. In order to have functionality of these roms 3 things are needed. First is the unlocked bootloader which is achieved using the JCase hack. The second is the kernel source which was kindly provided by HTC. The final thing needed is access to the Radio Interface Layer or RIL. Basically this is the software or drivers that allows android to speak to the radio of the phone. These generally are not released to the public and have to be hacked out of a ROM or made from scratch. This is currently not available for the DNA and will be difficult to get as it is the first phone using this hardware combination. It is being worked on by devs but no ETA has been given yet. Until we get this, the only roms we see will be based on the stock sense rom
