Ciao Hello to all you guys.
In Italy now is summer and ambient temperature is almost 30/35 Celsius.
But I have problem with overheating of my gs3!i can reach easily 50c for cpu (misured with system turner) and 46/48 for battery (misured with elixir 2) when I'm simply on 3g connection and I send some sms, what app, fb and other small things such as email, few minutes of browsing!
Also after the first boot (unplugged from charger) my phone became immediately hot!!! I had do nothing! Only booted it!!!
Attached you can see my configuration of rom and kernel. Now I have -50 uv cpu with perseus just to try. But for daily use I use yank kernel with zzmove optimized profile. I hope someone can help me!

Hi mattiadj,
Perseus kernel comes with STweaks, use that and set the GOVERNOR to performance and then click apply,
Next, choose the pegasusq and then click apply again, this is to ensure that you're not running at other GOVERNOR that locking at highest CPU frequency.
Let's reboot and monitor again, hopefully this helped.

Mate now I'm back to yank kernel with zzmove optimized profile at 1.4ghz.
I check with perfmon CPU and for the most of time I have only first core on between 200 and 1400 mhz. So I'm sure I'm using zzmove

If you're keen to continue with the troubleshooting of the heating issues, there's another possibility...
my s3 is having heating issues as well only when i'm using large 'hosts' file to block the ads.
wondering if i'm right about this, every URL request go through the list in the hosts file before it goes to your provider DNS,
try to imaging if most of the URL that you're request is not within the list, and the host file size is about 8mb.
will this take a lots of CPU effort to process when you're surfing internet?

no need to check for the size, disable the ad free and see if your heating issues still persist.
in case you want to check, it's located in /etc/hosts

Unfortunately facebook for android sucks, try setting it to check for updates less often, and sign out of chat if not using it.

If you're talkin bout the official facebook app then you are right. Also had this experience. Was checking thru system panel then i noticed the fb app was consuming cpu usage while running in background with sync off.. That fb app is getting glitchy sometimes. I uninstalled it!

I had similar issues with the official Facebook app. I use Advanced Task Killer (ATK) which is a free download from Market. You can set it to auto-kill apps at regular intervals (in my case, every hour). So the FB app gets killed every now and then, saving whatever battery can be saved..

ATK'ers cause more problems than they help, as every time something is killed, the phone wakes up, kills something, then the app has to be reloaded.
Its highly recommended not to use them.

Maybe pre gingerbread, but as far as I know 2.3.x has always had a LMK (low memory killer) built in, so it does the same thing as a ATK, but its "smart" and doesn't hurt the battery like a ATK does.
I kno this is a super bump but this is the closest thread i could find to my issue...
After facebook recently updating the app i noticed, in the stock application manager on my LG P930, it using about 58% and even spikeing up to 88% CPU usage and using over 40.0 MBs of my RAM i have to stop the app in the application manager for it to stop....
Heres a pic for proof i guess:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1035642&stc=1&d=1335922294
So my actual question is can this harm the hardware to my phone if i dont stop it running after every use? And is there maybe a fix to get it to stop using so much?
i got fb on both sgs1 an sgs2 yes many say it consumes power but y dosnt mine do tht its loggd in 24hrs........cheerz
Facebook for Android sucks really.. I noticed this whole CPU trashing started when they upgraded Facebook some time ago to what is the "current" skin for the past 4-5 months or so. Suddenly, everytime I launch Facebook, when I go back to my home screen it stays running...
Obviously I have the notifications and synch refresh set to never..
Watchdog complains about it...
Connecting via ADB and issuing top shows the katana process eating 20% cpu or more..
Using a terminal app on the phone and issuing top reveals the same thing...
So I just use Watchdog to kill Facebook everytime I'm done using it, or I use the sluggish browser version that doesn't suffer from this cause it runs in the browser
Upgrade after upgrade they can't seem to fix this and it's symptomatic.. not random! At least not on my Nexus S running the latest ICS 4.0.4.
Would be interesting if via ADB we could check the threads of the facebook process and see what's running...
What would be even better would be some sort of channel to complain about this to Facebook.. I mentioned this in my review on the Play store but I don't think anyone cares about what's written there (at least none from the Facebook development team..)
Hi !
I'm discovering the SGS2, I have it since 2 days now.
I found a strange thing : Idle (cpu @200mhz), the facebook app is taking 5 to 14% of the CPU I don't know why because the app is not updating or making sync.
If I put the cpu clock on 1400Mhz, the cpu usage is about 2% for facebook app.
Anybody can say me why this app is doing that?
Thanks

Because the facebook app is crap.
It uses less cpu time/etc if you sign out of chat when you are not using it and increases the update interval to more than 1h.

Best of luck, I found that at the best of times it wouldnt push notifications and at the worst it always kept the phone awake, maybe the newer versions are actually good :O
Ok !
I tried : the cpu usage is now at 2-3% and do not jump to 15% anymore
Problem : if the app is closed and restarted : i have to disconnect live chat again... fuc* ^^
Thanks anyway^^

Maybe try looking for an alternative? I remember socialscope was good on blackberry and they have a android app now, in closed beta but you can sign up.
And i am sure there are others on the market, I cant help more as I dont really facebook
Thank you for your help
I tried some app in the past, and the official one is the best for me :/ (if we don't care about the cpu usage ) SO, i'll stay with this app, hoping facebook cpu usage will be fixed in some update^^

Best of luck, I would think you and the rest of the android community who uses the FB app! (We are #1 OS, why do they treat us so badly? )
In other words, monitor at what frequencies is an application running.Couldn't find information in google/xda; Do you know some program that can do this?
Cpu spy reborn by mirko. It can check what speed the cpu's are running at all the time. reset it and run you're app then go bk and check what speed it was running at. Easy to work out if you reset before you start up the app.

Thanks, this one is useful, but my idea was an application that shows each app's name and the frequency it uses.. and possibly to store logs.According to my research no such app is developed.
Just wait for a while. Someone may no of one that does that.

You may not find it
Track every app freq is impossible.

Use Greenify. (find it on the market)
It will kill all processes of apps not active. However, remember it does not distinguish that you have switched to another app, and want a particular one in memory to remain. So choose the apps you want to "hibernate" before hand carefully.
I have been using this app for a very long time, now, and find the battery life and heating issues are a thing of the past. Active apps will continue to drain battery and heat up processors, but not much you can do about that is there?
cheers

Hi another thing you can try is to tweak down the max cpu speeds using any tuner. I myself use the Kerneltuner which is very efficient for the CM11 roms.
The effect is immediate and the battery life is also increased. You can also chage the control to power saving / on demand to solve this issue without changing the cpu speeds.
hope this also helps.
cheers

I'm not sure about cm, but stock roms turn off when it gets unsafe (around 90 C I think). Mine used to shut off with extended miracast use, so now I keep it on ice cubes. I use tasker to display cpu temp on the screen when I'm doing high heat producing activities like watchespn and maps. That at least lets me see when things are getting dangerous.
Yes, I've searched the internet and xda for an answer.
Yes, i do indeed know that xperia Z2 has an overheating problem with the camera and especially 4k recording.
But my problem is one of a kind!
It never occurs during the most heavy tasks, and yet it appears in the most simple ones.
I play asphalt 8 on high graphic while wifi is online and even when it is charging, i can feel the warmth but it NEVER shuts down.
But yet in other times i open my phone for a simple task like makimg a simple call, and it says that the device is shutting down due to high temperature.
Even though i have all apps killed, the phone temperature is cooled, it suddenly decides to shut down.
It also occurs as soon as i open the camera "normal pic, not eben 4k" and it instantly gives me that "shutting down due to high temp"
But it's not a big deal compared to my main problem that it shuts down at random low-tasks.
--------------
The solutions I've tried "please read before you suggest them again ":
- The problem first occured on LP 5.1.1
- I've downloaded and reflashed the official LP firmware. Problem still exists.
- I've downloaded and flashed the new official MM firmware, the problem still exists.
- I've had this problem before and after rooting my device, despite killing all the insignificant background processes using greenify
- I can "not" take it back to service center, because i do not have one in my country, and the local shop i bought it from would simply ignore that problem since it happens like 1-2 times per day at random occasions and i won't just keep messing with my mobile till it occurs, so he would deny the problem and blame it on "heavy usage".
Thank you in advance! :crying:
Don't have a solution but was wondering how old your device was? Have you used any temperature guage apps to see what's happening inside? Apps like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yanyan.cputemp - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cpuid.cpu_z - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=info.kfsoft.android.MemoryIndicator the last one let's you have an overlay on screen to see what's happening as you use your phone. But from what you've described it sounds like a hardware fault with the sensor. There is a system app called "over heat control" maybe you could disable said app? BUT I don't know if this would stop your phone functioning all together... Maybe try recording your screen when you know this happens most to prove to shop what's happening? Best of luck!
