Network Issues at Work - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I am having an odd problem with my GS4 and I'm open to any suggestions. Everywhere else except for work I have no problems with my network, however at my office in downtown SF I get horrible network performance despite being on 4G. According to Status, my signal strength is -91 dBm 49 asu, but I can't load any pages without them timing out. What's odd is my VZW Blackberry Bold performs fine on 3G in the same place. My previous phone, an HTC Thunderbolt, had some 4G issues at my office, but I was always able to get it to work by forcing it into Airplane mode then back to 4G (this process doesn't help on my GS4). Does anyone have ideas or suggestions? Is there a way to force the phone into 3G only? I am still on the launch ROM and radio at this point.

It's a data capacity issue, you are probably only getting 1 or 2 towers at work instead of the usual 5, the airplane mode trick is probably giving you one more tower. Just tell Verizon, they'll flag your area and either increase capacity to the towers you get or increase signal penetration/range on the ones you don't

Interesting, I hadn't thought about that. Is this something that I can just notify them via *611 or is there a better method? Also, are there any apps (or built in functions) to track which towers I'm able to see?

I noticed this the other day as well. I don't use data very often whole on a call, and when i noticed the slower speeds, I attributed it to where i was.
If this is true, its yet another reason to start hating on AT&T!!

Yeah it's really noticeable when you do something try to send a picture message while on the phone. The upload speed is just crazy low.
No throtling being done here. From my understanding during a phone call lte simply cannot be used in conjunction with voice calling, so the LTE radio is turned off and voice is sent over hspa+(or whatever other bands its using) and data switches to HSPA+. So not neccesarily intentional throttling per say, just hardware and technological limitations. Once VoLTE is more common practice I'm sure this will change.

This. A member of these forums (Planoman, I think) apparently asked Lisa Gade directly about this based on a comment she made in a Note review and she confirmed it.

That's not really true. If it were then the faster the connection you have, the faster your on call connection would be. If what you were saying was true then when I'm in an area that gets 9 megs during a call, I should get better on-call data speeds than if I was in an area with 2 megs. Instead regardless of if I'm in a 9 meg or 2 meg area, my data speeds during a call still instantly drop down to around 1 meg and the upload ALWAYS goes down to the 20k area (even if I'm in an area that gives me over 2 megs of upload. BTW, it wasn't always like this either. It isn't a limitation of technology, it's a limitation placed by AT&T, most likely to save spectrum. The crazy thing to me is they air these talk and surf commercials but you can barely do it now. If you compare it to Tmobile, it's like night and day.
I saw that the other day when I was on a call. Thought I was just in a bad area. Just tested on my coworkers note while he's on a call, same thing. Lame.

How is it a hardware and technology limitation if the SAME PHONES perform DIFFERENTLY on different networks using the same technology?
Ok some of you guys really need to research more about how AT&T's 4G lte network works lol,Lte is purely for data so when not on a call the phone will sit on the lte band but the moment you make or receive a call the network hands off the phone to a hspa, hspa+ or edge (connection if the other 2 3g connections hspa or hspa+ is not available) . Once the call is done the phone should switch back to the preferred lte connection. Currently not being able to make voice calls over lte is a limitation by the tech, once voice over ip is ready to be implemented on lte then we're good to go.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
I can confirm this on my Note. I thought it was just an odd quirk for me but I'm partially glad to hear it affects everyone. On my old HSPA phone I could maintain 2-3 Gbps at home even while on a call - useful for work so I could be on a conference call while also remoting to my work computer's desktop. Now when I'm on a voice call the data connection becomes nearly useless. I may have to switch back to my old phone next time I need to do this - which is ridiculous!
So even if a phone call does force you onto HSPA, they are still throttling you far below the available bandwidth.

This issue has nothing to do with LTE though. I know I saw someone earlier in the thread bring it up, but that has no bearing on what we're experiencing.
I noticed the same thing as well last week when I would make calls. LTE shuts off, 4G kicks in for calls. Hang up, LTE turns back on. Just like Verizon's no data while talking its simply a hardware limitation on the network for now.

From what I've experienced it goes beyond just kicking you down to the HSPA network.
They definitely changed this. Tested this extensively when the skyrocket came out
The hardware is not capable of both seperate radios operating at the same time and voice over lte has not been implemented.
Plain and simple.
When you make a call the lte radio goes idle. The hspa (3g and hspa+) radio activates
Speeds during call should be the equivelant of speeds achieved with a 3g phone...like we confirmed with a gs2 Back then
Now though
Slow speeds while on a call
tested 3g speeds...added the phone apn and select it. It may or may not work but if it works it will lock you onto 3g briefly enough to do a speed test. Compare that to your in call tests. or use a 3g only phone To get a comparison test IN REAL TIME
Technically att could begin throttling but it could be network issues as well.

Scratch everything i said...they have obviously changed this since those tests we did. In call Speeds come in at 600 kbps and no upload at all and out of call 3+ mbps
Althouh slow...600 mbps should load pages etc...but it isnt.
Definitely something screwy going on. ..time to call att again

So...if you have slow speeds while on a call either the 3g network is having issues or the 3g speeds suck there. You absolutely will not achieve lte speeds in a call.

We all know the att network is not that consistant.
Technically att could begin throttling based on the pta apn. ..but so far our testing shows exactly what I described above

That's what I was talking about. I could live with a fallback to HSPA until they implement voice on LTE, but the results are much slower than that.

Perhaps YOU should do a little more research...I assure you I am not a ROOKIE when it comes to these things. I have known for a fact that people were able to surf and talk on AT&T's network in the past without any problems. Now internet is practically UNUSABLE while on a call. Pages wont even load. There is something very underhanded going on.
Even by your own statement the phone should revert to 3g speeds while a call is being placed so why are speeds equivalent to EDGE/Dial Up when people have adequate signal strenght?

Does anyone else have problems with mobile data dropping frequently?
My thunderbolt and rezound act the same. At work, the signal strength reported in the about phone screen fluctuates between -63 & - 73dbm. Ill lose mobile data countless times daily. If you go to the settings to try and toggle mobile data, it's greyed out and says turning on...

Verizon probably have a weak signal in your work place.
This happens. Also, LTE is known to stop allowing traffic (at random) and require a turning off/on of Mobile Data (especially when using constant data for long periods of time).
It's annoying.
Different places - happens more than others.
I have also been experiencing issue with Verizon data connections as of late. I have a hard time even locking onto 3G with my Rez. But my other phones no issues, I am now on my 4th Rezound in over a month since having this issue.

Its pointless to have LTE if I cant use it......

Compared to my unfortunate experience with 4G devices, any of my other 3G phones hold onto and got better locks on 3G than compared to the past Rezounds. Now the latest rezound finally does get a data lock the prior 4 did not.
I've got no 4g issues. Almost never drops. I'm in southern California.

This issue has been addressed a lot in many forums for the rezound, tbolt, gnex, and pretty much every 4g phone out. For some phones its not that bad. I think its software based cause once I rooted and s-off I've never had it happen to me again. The gnex I think they narrowed down to combination of software and hardware issues. I've been running ice roms since I rooted. I've been through 3 replacements, all did it, all had new Sims all new phones (not refurbished).
Here's a post I followed when it was happening to me. I've done lots of research on this and I truley do think its software based (mostly because Verizon won't admit its their network)

It's a network. If you have -65 -75 dbm on 1xrtt that doesn't mean you have the same signal strength on lte. LTE signal is different from 1xrtt or evdo. The reason that you lose date quite often is because the LTE signal is very poor in your location especially if you are indoor. to improve LTE signal wilson electronics has very good amplifier, that calls sleek 4g-v get it. It may improve the signal by 20 dbm.
There is a few threads on this and no resolutions. There is some kinda of problem with the network that Verizon isn't owning up to. There is a bunch of forums posting the problem as well, where the 4g just drops off and then comes back on. Prior to the begining of June if my 4g dropped out it would go to 3g. Now the places I had solid 4g I am getting it on and off every minute or so. I went down to verizon and the girl said she is having problems with her Tbolt. We changed out the sim and she said she could get me a new phone but to me it sounds like the network if so many people across all phones are having problems. I am going to call Verizon probably this weekend or monday cause I am tired of being on 3g all the time and not being able to use the 4g is driving me nuts. Things are so slow. Arg.

From all the responses, Galaxy S3 is the best signal people are getting to date. Better than the one xxx and the Motorola Razor Maxx. And HTC and Motorola have been known to have the best reception. Go figure.
I won't have my GS3 until July 9th so I can't say first hand.

[Q] JB ROMS radio signal loss?

Hello DInc 4G community,
I was curious to know if anyone else has seen low call signal or 4G signal loss with JB based ROMs? I have tried CM10.1 and the Avatar ROM and when flashing either, the cell signal strength only show's up to 3 bars as well as my phone always reverting to 3G instead of 4G. If I go back to stock based ROM, my cell signal shows full bars as well as the data mostly in 4G mode. Not sure it this is an artifact of the status bar indicator icon or possible firmware related? When I had my Dinc2 and was using ICS based ROM's, I had noticed improvements when flashing the ICS firmware.Wondered if this was the same for the DInc4g LTE?

that's kind of miss leading, if you check the numbers on your signal on both roms they are about the same. the number of bars is just different, as for the 3g and 4g stuff i'm not sure, never checked the numbers
I've seen the same thing, not looking at bars, but dbm
As in lower signal, more loss of reception on jb

My lower values I posted are on LTE. The lower the - dBm / dB value the better or closer you are to the Tower. As my signal gets worse 1-2 bar graph, I'm at -118 to -120 dBm on 4G. When my phone switches to 3G/EVDO/1x the signal strength is only showing dB value.
My 4G doesn't work at all on CM10.1. Just a hint on how to avoid this... Never mess with radio settings or try updating roaming capabilities. CyangenMod will break your 4G. There are problems with CyangenMod and device radios. There needs to be a way to reprogram the Radio Bands. Someone please try and figure something out. I have figured out a way on how to manipulate the radio to connect to 4G. But it is kinda complicated. You have have to switch the CDMA Subscription from RUIM/SIM to NV, then go to the dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#* then go into Phone Information, then go to "Set preferred network type:" and make sure that it says: "LTE/CDMA auto (PRL)" then restart your phone. There are a couple downsides to this.
1) Your calling won't work.
2) Your messaging won't work.

Yeah I know not to talk to you because you're kinda a jerk. I just talked to Verizon and got it sorted out with them. I now have working 4G. Asking for more information so he might be able to identify your problem is a huge jerk move. Now I understand....
Don't try to learn something if you can't take constructive criticism. It's natural to be frustrated when you're very experienced with something and someone asks for help with few details. Dumb questions get dumb answers.

Issues with wireless tethering or VZW "throttling" connections?

Hi all,
Is there any truth to VZW "throttling" folks' who are on unlimited data plans? I ask because I regularly tether my DNA to my macbook air. As soon as I start downloading a large file or use facetime, the connection with the Internet breaks off. I noticed that my speed would drop from 1.4gbps down to 700kbps shortly before the connection breaks.
I know that's rather anecdotal but the connection break does not appear coincidental, it happens every time within a minute of me using anything that requires a large amount of data.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

I haven't notice while tethering, but I have noticed my overall speed has gone down.
I wonder if you call VZW and ask if you are throttled if they have to tell you?

Hi all,
Is there any truth to VZW "throttling" folks' who are on unlimited data plans? I ask because I regularly tether my DNA to my macbook air. As soon as I start downloading a large file or use facetime, the connection with the Internet breaks off. I noticed that my speed would drop from 1.4gbps down to 700kbps shortly before the connection breaks.
I know that's rather anecdotal but the connection break does not appear coincidental, it happens every time within a minute of me using anything that requires a large amount of data.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

Did you uninstall TetheringGuard.apk and Verizon Mobile Hotspot (wifirouter.apk) if using a third party or my preference, google wireless tether apk. Since you're unlimited you must be using a non verizon app. I recommend
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether&hl=en
Press menu and settings, set the device profile to HTC Rezound LTE/CDMA. Change setup method to netd-ndc master. Scroll down near the bottom and check to enable the routing fix. That's three settings total that you should have touched. Now grant root permissions when you press the big yellow start tethering button and give it a few minutes.
Verizon typically does not throttle connections (whether tethering or not) unless you are specifically abusing your connection. I have unlimited, and typically use at least 50 GB of data per billing cycle and have not experienced any sort of throttling.

Yes, this is true, though I didn't mention it since it happens so rarely.
Verizon can throttle you if you're tethering on their 3g network....by FCC law they cannot on the 4G network.
The OP was most likely in a 3g area since he went from 1.4mb to 700 kb...I'm pretty sure no one gets 1.4gig on even LTE lol
I believe Verizon's official 3g throttling policy is something to the effect if you are in the top 5% of data users and are on 3g on a cell tower that is congested or during "rush hour"so to speak, they will/reserve the right to throttle your 3g connection.
use a user agent switcher when you tether and they will never know its not your phone so you will bypass any type of throttle
i dont know anything about mac's but firefox and chrome have a user agent switcher that you can set on android (mobile sites) or opera for normal (full site) web browsing, gl nawmsayn

Pretty sure this is bad information. User Agent just tells the website what browser you are using so the page can be displayed properly for you. Changing your user agent in Chrome won't affect your streaming of movies in Netflix.
Hi all, I'm the OP, thank you all for your advice. I apologize I had forgotten to mention that my phone is not rooted.
From what I can gather, I was on a congested network (Midtown New York City), so that was probably the source of my poor data speeds. What bugs me is that I had 5 bars on 4G and my speed for first 15-30 seconds were around the 1.4gbps mark. So I can't help but wonder if VZW intentionally throttles down data usage on a congested 4G network, which I believe someone above had mentioned could be the case.
In any case, I'm back on the West Coast and my data speeds are back to a consistent "normal".

You do NOT have bars of data, the 'bars' are a visual reference in regards to the signal strength of the cellular connection NOT your data connection.

See how that's supposedly working out with other provisions set forth by the c block agreement. I'm sure they can, do and will continue to due what ever it is they deem necessary to keep their network secure.

How do you UN install the tetheringguard.apk and the Verizon hot spot? I've been running Wi-Fi tether for a while now since I rooted my DNA and all of a sudden tonight it stopped working....wondering if this is the problem

I just delete them using a file explorer app out of /system/app. Should be good to go

I have always wondered that, lol. Out of curiosity, does anyone have problems with 4g/3g switching like crazy? I am guessing that it is giving 3g priority. I have 4g available in my current area, however, my phone only wants to stay on 3g and will sometimes just flash onto 4g for a few minutes..

Yeah go for it. No reason to not be s-off if you're on the 1.x firmware. Its not like on the rezound where you had to short out pins using a wire to get s-off haha good times

Global network mode gives you better signal

Look at the pic and sumone please explain this to me I googled it and all I found was that using global gives you better connection by using all antennas in the phone and just keep the roam off so switch to global and keep roaming disabled to not get over charges but is it worth it

This randomly popped up for me in Lowes yesterday. I was wondering whether it would cause additional charges so I didn't change anything.

I ordered mine online from verizon and when i posted this i was curious enough to check. Mine, by default, was set in global mode and reception has been 1000x's better then my GNex.
I'll try two battery charge cycles both ways (global mode) and one in LTE/CDMA mode and i'll report back.

This is funny that you would post this because I just had the opposite experience. I am on an unlimited Verizon data plan + pay for the unlimited mobile hotspot so it's our primary internet and we use it all the time. 2 days ago when we got home from work we had about 2 hours to kill before going to a pot luck so i wanted to surf the interwebz (specifically to watch the Youtube video about the Other Guys movie where Will Ferrell talks about Tuna's attacking a lion....). It worked slowly at first and then totally died.
So i called up 611 and wanted to report bad towers because we've been having a lot of storms lately and the lady said there were none and that i should go into the settings you just showed and see if it was on global. It was and she had me change it to the LTE option and BAM! it was fixed. Instantly.
I had already tried power cycling my phone and it did nothing so i think this fixed it. I know she was reading off a script on her screen but she said when the phone is on global mode it tries to reach too far to reach GSM towers as well as LTE and can mess up the data connection.
I have no idea if it's true but it makes sense to leave it on the LTE option since i am not currently traveling.
Just wanted to add my 2cp...

I would leave it the way it is. As soon as VZW updates their 4G to use the AWS spectrum we should all see better signal strength and what not.

The reason for this is because you were probably connected to a tower that was not part of Verizon's own network. Turning off Global means your phone only accepts connections to Verizon's towers, which probably connected you with a faster tower.

Ya...except that won't even *begin* to happen until around the end of the year (October, if I'm not mistaken?), and only in select markets. It won't be in even a majority of LTE markets for another few years. AWS isn't even in its infancy yet.

Boy, so much wrong information in this thread that my head is starting to hurt.
Let me clarify this for everyone, before everyone starts going, "zOMG Global Mode is the best!!11"
The "Global Mode" has been around for Samsung since the S1. Simply put, it's a way to turn off the INTERNATIONAL radios when you're not traveling. The phone turns off the global ready band radios and only uses LTE/CDMA when you're on your home network when you select the non-global mode. That is it. Nothing more, nothing less. It's not a magical tool to get better signal. It does NOTHING for your signal here in the US, much the same way clearing battery stats does NOTHING for your battery life.
I always keep it off because the firmware eventually scans the global (GSM) bands and well, however small or minute that might be, it eats battery.
Unless you're in South America, or Europe, you don't need the global mode on.
If you ever see the phone asking you about Global mode, is because your phone was out of service for a set amount of time. After that timer has elapsed, the settings apk will ask you if you want to turn the Global feature on (it's trying to be smart and thinking you're out of the country since you have no domestic CDMA/LTE signal) It happens to me all the time in my car port.
Hope this helps.

Its the e911 icon and it cant be turned off. you can however flash a mod if you are rooted with a recovery.

not sure why you pay to enable the mobile hotspot. If you are still on unlimited then get foxfi. It works on the S4 with no root required. It can be a hotspot for you without paying verizon anything additional.
wouldn't that drain the battery faster?
