Hi everyone,
It's been quite a long time since I've been on the galaxy tab 10.1 forum, since I gave my tab to my dad on January, and now I'm getting it back. So I'm kind of outdated about ICS roms. I've seen that there are two new ROM, the AOKP and CM9. I did a little research to see the difference between both, but didn't find major ones.
So I'm here to see your opinion, and feedback about each of the two ROMs. And does the camera work on AOKP or not yet?
Thank you

CM9 has not yet been released; you're talking about the nightly kang builds. If you want to know the differences between the kang CM9 builds and the Roman's Kang builds (AOKP), install one, try it, then install the other. Hint: the AOKP ROM has some controls that are not built in to the CM9 Kangs.
And for gods sake: the camera will not work on any of the ICS ROMs until Samsung releases their ICS with the drivers. Please stop asking this.
I am going to install and try both but it would nice to know the feedback of other users. I don't get it why you get pissed off when asking about the camera, as if i insulted you or blamed u for not having the camera working. I will keep asking if the camera works although i never use it, and if you have a problem with that, ctrl+w or alt+f4, X in the top right, alt+left arrow, damn there's lots of alternative to leave this page.
So does the camera work? Does the camera work? Does the camera work?

The reason he got pissed is because that question is asked over and over again. A simple search of these forums would have answered that question about the camera.
I just installed the AOKP ROM on my GT wifi last night, so far it is pretty good but I have not had it on there that long. I love having the chrome browser (or the ICS version of chrome) so I now have my bookmarks from my desktop.
Some of the popup windows when you install items are not that nice looking or smooth. Not all of my apps are showing up in the market and thats the other thing, my market is still market and not Play. I flashed the gapps 4.0.4 that was linked in the CM9 ICS wifi thread so not sure why it is still showing the old market.
I am getting used to ICS, many things seem very nice and smooth and some things not so nice looking and smooth.
I just recently took the dive and tried the AOKP first, was nice but browsers kept crashing, last night, installed the CM9 kangs and I'm liking it so far.
Will keep you updated.
I started with the AOKP ROM since I really liked its speed and features on my Galaxy Nexus. However, I noticed quickly that it wasn't too much snappier than stock. So yesterday I switched to CM9 and I have noticed that CM9 it's noticeably snappier all around.
I'll be sticking with this.
Thanks all for you replies, I appreciate that a lot.

Well I think it's obvious that my main thread is not about the camera, I'm basically asking about the two ROMs. You people just love to make a big deals about everything. Maybe because talk is cheap, you can say whatever you want.

In my experience the AOKP rom is a lot less stable than cm9, but much more configurable. I had this problem with aokp where the system UI would force close nonstop, which was unbelievably annoying, so I switched to cm9 and havent looked back.
That's odd. In my experience, CM9 was sluggish and FC'ing all the time - I'm on AOKP 32 now and haven't had a single FC I see everybody talking about... And it's much more snappier then stock rom!
I've a korean version though, so I'm not sure if that makes it any different. Only issue I have is a "rolling" screen when I boot up the system + first lock screen. Turn the screen off and back on, not a single problem. (but thats a issue with the korean tab I read)

i just installed AOKP build 33, it's really nice but as said before, the System UI FC is really annoying, and the nav bar keeps on autohiding. however, when I disabled the nav bar glow, the system UI doesn't FC anymore. I'll test AOKP for a while, and then I'll try CM9. I have finals on monday, so I won't be able to switch a lot between roms.
thanks all for your help
just got another SysUI FC, seems that nav bar glow didn't solve the problem.
I have AOKP Build 34 installed and it is snappy and fast. I'll be checking out the CM9 nightly this weekend, so I'll let you know.
Rob
I've tried both AOKP ICS and CM9 ICS on my samsung galaxy tab 10.1. For me, the CM9 feels smoother, but the AOKP gives more ROM control features. For now, I'd like a smooth tablet..
cm9 or aokp
I have the cm9 in my 10.1 wifi now and I like it but when you multi task the launcher crashes frequently, although it does restart quickly.
The screen flickers often as many people have mentioned as well
Other than that its pretty good
The best part is the loss of touchwiz UI. The feel of touch operations is so much more responsive and smooth
Pershoot ICS builds
I have been using Pershoots latest builds on my tab, and things are fine but for the occasional flicker.
AOKP definately has more option for ROM control, and UI customization too. It allows for 5 icons instead of the standard three, and allows for setting custom options for long press of these icons. .
I reverted to CM9 though because even P5 AOKP is quite buggy. Some times you can't place the icons from the app drawer on a screen ( the screen just rotates twice), touch sensitivity seemed to be lesser.
The touch sensitivity on the pershoots build is quite good. I am able to comfortably play Temple Run, which used to be a disaster before.

I got a 10.1 wifi recently and am wondering if its worth it to root now and get ics installed (with the -of no camera) or to wait untill samsung gets its act together, and get the offical version.
You're asking in an Android Hacking forum, we're all rooted and I'd bet 80% are running ICS .
If you can live without the camera then definitely go for it, if you're comfortable. You could be waiting a while on Samsung, they tend to delay such things.
If do decide to root it, don't be afraid to ask questions here. Welcome to XDA.
I don't know if the question asked is appropriate or a trick question considering this forum is completely dedicated to the benefits of hacking to gain maximum benefit.

It's really not very hard to try it out for yourself and see if you like it. You can always flash back to stock if you need to.
I have CM9 ICS on my personal tablet, but am still using 3.2 on my G-Tab 10.1 because I need the camera for work. I am running the Overcome ROM on it though, which gives me a little more options/flexibility than stock samsung.
but as far as performance, there is little difference between 3.2 HC and ICS (at least at this point). There are some UI differences that I like, but they are minor changes from honeycomb, so don't expect a huge difference on ICS.
Easy answer: yes, it is. And it's very easy to install ics. Just do it and have fun.
Three more questions:
Is there any other bugs besides the camera not working?
And any links to upto date root and ics (i think i read 4.0.4?)?
Is it not possible to get the camera drivers (which from what I have read is the missing link) from the old stock version?
Fyi I have the Samsung 10.1 wifi gt-p7510
Thank you guys already I am not trolling btw i have never rooted/ flash a new operating system on android and kind of afraid of bricking my tablet.

QBKing77 has great video instructions on YouTube, check it out. Very easy. Make sure you do a backup b4 putting a rom on and make sure it's for your Tab. Only issue I have ever had is no camera, but I knew that going in and I use my S2 for pics anyway. We can't get the camera because Sammy will not release the needed info. You can brick your tablet that's a risk but there r ways to unbrick, like I said just make sure the root method and from is for your version of the Galaxy Tab.

Once rooted you wont look back and its so easy and quick to do. Much more freedom IMO, I started with ICS and its great, but went back to HC just because of the camera. Such a shame, I have htc dhd phone rooted on ics and camera works fine, just a samsung thing.
As said previously, give it a try
Question about rooting what dose it allow you to do?
Rooting allows you to gain access to the system files, lets just say its like your employee ID to get into your company
i rooted my g tab to ics once, i guess it was worth it, but i went back to honeycomb because of the camera.
It's not like camera on a tab plays a great feature, because taking pictures with the tab is like using a laptop to take a 5MP picture.
I'd say I never use the camera on my tab.......... Until I flashed ics then I just kept needing it think it's just a case of wanting what you don't have.. So I'm back to HC.
Is there any good roms out there with the camera working? Sorry for the noob question, Im a new tab owner.

Sorry to bump this, but I'm curious to know if it's easy to replace the tablet for a decent price? That's really my only concern about rooting my tablet.
Of course it is, you are in the right place
i havent flashed the 10.1 to ICS purely because i use the camera for such things as skype or google hangouts.
so im using overcome rom, but i miss being able to group apps into a folder like ICS can do
ICS Or Not??? That is the Question!!!!
Over the last 6 months I have tried every ROM listed for the Galaxy Tab here on XDA, including ICS. I must say ICS offers better battery life, faster processing and better visuals, but I am like a few others and need the camera so I am sticking with Galaxy Task Rom. Out of all of them it is the most stable, and fastest giving me Quadrant Scores of just under 3100. Using ICS I was closer to 3600 and I thought at one point hit 3800, but I think that was a fluke, but then I had no camera, so back to 3.2. For me I have compiled the best apps I could to make my tablet a screamer.....If you have any others please let me know.
Galaxy Task
OC 1.4 Pershoot Kernel (is there a 1.5 or 1.6)
Swapper File @ 500mb (app)
SD Speed Boost set at 4000 (app)
Volume + set on Beats Emulation with +10 speaker increase (app)
Poweramp for a 10 band equalizer for great sound (app)
Now using the same apps with ICS made it ultra fast. But I wish the camera worked.
Definately appreciate everyone on here with their input.....my knowledge is only as good as flashing and recovery, but am trying to learn more as I move forward. Love the Galaxy Tab, it is my 10th tablet I have owned and my favorite. Now I have to figure out how to flash my Atrix 2 phone........love this site!!!!
Quick ques about ICS Roms [from what I've seen in Cm9/Muiu]
1. can you change screen mode [dynamic/movie/normal]
2. change font styles?
I don't remember seeing these options, but it was about a month ago when I flashed these Roms?

Hey everyone, I recently aquired a 10.1 tab and was wondering would it be best to root it and clean up the samsung junk to speed it up? Or would it be more ideal to flash it with a stable and tested rom?
The reason Im asking is, I heard aboutslight issues running JB on this device such as screen flickering, I was wondering just how bad this is and if JB is full of slight graphical glitches like this because of not being compatible with this device?
Hopefully i didnt ask too many questions, thanks everyone and have a good morning!
Nah, the screen flickering happens from time to time, not very frequent. IMO, you should upgrade to JB asap because it is more stable.
Sent from my GT-P7500 using XDA Premium HD app
rooting it is definitely a must because its fast, pretty easy, and really makes the device better by getting rid of the bloatware and gives you the ability to run root only apps. But, you'll still be on TOUCHWIZ Android 4.0.4.
So I would also definitely flash a custom rom. CM 10.1 is pretty stable even though it is only on nightlies. the only problems I encounter are that occasional screen flicker (not a big deal), and a small sound issue (volume is sometimes too low). Also google now works, but you have to disable the hotwording feature, which is something I dont use anyway.
I haven't tried any other custom roms, but all of them are packed with features and give you a lot of options. Plus, at least with CM 10.1, it is super smooth and really gives new life to a device that's over two years old, makes it pretty much run like now. I would take my rooted, CM 10.1 Two year old Galaxy Tab over a new Ipad.
Sounds like the issues facing it are minor at best. The volume issue slightly concerns me, has this been a long term issue?
Under what conditions does screen flickering happen? Is it random? When movement is ocuring?
The level of consistency in the development of CM and everything everyone has told me about it I would be foolish to pass it up.
Still interested in hearing more opinions and info, but I will say this makes deciding much easier. I hope for a set of newbie questions this isnt presented in an uncaring and disrespectable way. :good:
I also forgot to mention im going to be traveling with this tablet, would not being able to update the rom present any major issues if i cant update it for amonth or two at a time?

For me, the screen flickering happens when my tab freezes because of low ram. I solve the volume issue by installing ViPER4Android. It is a sound mod that improves sound quality and volume. Another way is install voodoo app from play store. There is one more thing you should know, YouTube won't be as smooth as in Honeycomb. Videos will stutter sometimes, but I think that is fine.

well since my last post I've installed cm 10.1. its running quite nicely. still getting around a couple if kinks here and there such as the lock screen widget for google music player flickers after a certain amount of time. I was wondering if this is why apollo was inckuded as a standard music player?
over all im definitely enjoying this. over all it is a ridiculous amount faster and feels so much snappier, truly taking advantage of the hardware. definitely loving it.
was also wonding what or if there is a safe over clock level for this tablet?
edit:I also had an issue with wifi, the icon will go grey and the internet acts unresponsive. turning off the wifi and turning it back on fixes it but I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this?

The highest you can go is 1.4ghz. If you flash A1 kernel, it can go up to 1.6, but it is extremely unstable. About the WiFi issue, you might wanna post that in the dedicated cm10.1 thread for more help since I'm not running cm10.1.

Hi all!
Could you be so kind and help me revert back to honeycomb stock?
I know it sounds crazy, but I cant stand anymore how slow and laggy CM 10.1 I currently use is on this device. I've tried a lot of things like factory reset, reflushing lates nightly etc. Still horribly slow and at times totally unresponsive.
My ultimate goal is return back to task650 rom.
However I cannot find any HC stock images. I do not think that I can simply flush HC rom in CM 6.0.3.1 recovery.
I was only able to find hc-3.2_touchwiz_ux-full_sam_tab_10.1.zip from pershoot.
Please advise! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Not sure where to find an HC-image yet, but what about trying Omni-ROM 4.4.2 KitKat newest build (+ A1-Kernel)?
It still has got some quirks, like bluetooth-audio not working or slow Video-decoding, but the rest is quite good and fluid now.
Thanks for your reply! However we are talking about my wife tablet and she needs video/cameras and BT.
So, unfortunately KK is out consideration at this point.
By the way, is KK Omni really that better? Thought I guess anything is better then touching screen and seeing touch and then waiting a couple of seconds for an action to really happen. I do not know what Google changed in memory management, but it now doesn't hold a candle against older versions. At least for such old device as Tab 10.1 is.
If your wife doesn't need much features, go for Omni 4.3. Its very smooth and stable enough for daily use.

Camera works; Bluetooth works also, just not streaming audio to a bluetooth-audio-device; Videos also work. Lokally stored seem to be better than streamed (YouTube, gameone, etc.)

Then... What about JellyBean3 (Android 4.3.1)?
I think most if not all you need is already compatible on that and it is a lot better in any case, thought.

Even 4.1.2 cm10 was superior,... What do you think you can expect from a Kitkat-Build?
IMHO, yes it is, even with those little quirks...
...and not to be mean, but I really don't think any 4.2-build can be called stable... They all have heavy idle-times/"hangs" up to a minute, if you've got some CPU&IO-Load-Hungry apps installed and running...

Well... May be it is my bad luck... I do not remember any CM build of any version that was smooth as Task650 rom.
So, you suggest to try rollback to 4.1? I though they stopped development.

I guess I softened the problem a little bit for now by removing all apps that create background services and account. FB, LinkIn etc.

Nope. I think you should rather try a 4.3.x-based build.
