[Q] Disable All Networks other than LTE? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

On my new S4 for Verizon I have 1-2 bars of LTE in my house, however it switches to 3G all the time. And if I go into airplane mode then back out, the LTE comes right back out and I get of 10 mbps download on speedtest, so is their a way I can make it so it doesn't switch automatically? Or to only use LTE?
Thanks,
Dan

Get an app like advanced signal status from the play store. Hit additional info and them device info. Scroll down to where it says CDMA/late auto prl, and change it to lte. Be carefully what u do in the additional info page, u could screw up ur phone. Also lte only doesnt receive calls or texts, so don't leave it there for too long.

I want it to be so I can always have LTE data, but I still want my calls and texts to come through. Your solution is nice but it's not exactly what I am looking for.
Thanks though

The issue of the phone preferring evdo to lte is often caused by a bad sim. You have nothing to lose by dropping by a corporate store and getting a new sim.

I've done the sim thing but my house is the same. 3g most places, 4g by the front window. Lol. I think the answer is gonna be a dev changing the threshold level for swichting. But that's prob only gonna be on a ROM or something similar. As far as I know it can't be done yet. Synergy ROM has some radio boost coding but didn't seem to change anything at my house. Good luck! And start a new post if u figure it out

3g data drops

I have seen some thread about the 3g bug and reference to dailing *#*#4636#*#* and changing it to cdma auto prl. There is another one that we can change too, dial ##778# and send go to modem and click that then enable rev a I did this and haven't lost data yet since. I take no credit for finding this out, seen it on Droid forums.net.

Interesting.... I got my hands on a thunderbolt as a potential epic replacement. But it only works in 4G and doesn't connect to 3G or 1X at all in the NY area.
Verizon stated that there is a global issue and they sent me a replacement with no questions asked.
Anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks, will try. Btw, discovered that my mobile network status shows 'turning on... ' indefinitely... this apparently was an underlying issue.
Set the two modem settings from cdma only/lte to auto/auto... restarting...

THAT RESOLVED THE ISSUE!
switching the 'preferred mode(9k)' from LTE only to Automatic did the trick. I almost overlooked the Menu Commit Modifications button. I left 'preferred mode' to CDMA Only. Should I switch this to auto too?
Got 1X, seems slow in Speedtest...

##778# allows you to go to the modem settings and change Rev to enabled, which puts you on the regular 3G network verizon has had for years. Their new 3G network, the hybrid network, that lets you do 3G data/voice at the same time is screwy and doesn't work everywhere yet.
Here in cincy I can only get on the original 3G network, so if I go 3G I can't do voice/data at the same time.
I had this problem today. Out of the blue, my phone shut off and rebooted and then I no longer had 3g. I took it in to the Verizon store and they ended up having to do a factory reset to get it working again. I'm hoping this is not something that will keep happening - I have a week and a half yet to decide if I want to keep it and this could be a deal-breaker.

they have already said they are having network issues.
anyone notice pandora issues after switching to rev a? seems like ever other song cant buffer and just skipps. or pauses is the better word. It will pause for 1 sec play for 1 sec over and over till i skip songs. It will then play a song fine then the next song skips.
Wonder if this has to do with their network issues?
I have seen no issues with pandora I use it a lot 3g 4g doesn't matter
my guess is something in your area is wrong

.211 - 4G only?

Installed the .211 leak last night. I normally keep my phone on 3G to save my battery unless I need 4G.
I just went to change my connection and all I can choose from is Global or CDMA/LTE.
Can you not run CDMA without LTE on the latest leak?

Try setting it manually:
Dial *#*#4636*#*#
Or install phone info app from google play
Go to phone info and in network menu change to cdma only and see if it works.
If not, back to your previous setup. Just make sure you get note of it before playing around.

I tried to set it in the network menu, but my only options are to choose from "Global" or "CDMA/LTE"
It looks like verizon has done away with letting the user choose from 3G or LTE.
I'm pretty upset with that considering my battery won't make it through half a day unless I'm on 3G...
If I dial that number, will that put me on 3G only? I'm on LTE, I just prefer CDMA for battery conservation.

Dial that number then press phone information. Change network type to CDMA PRL. It'll keep it on 3G. If you need 4G, dial the number again and change it back.
Just be careful with what you click
Awesome! To revert back to 4G, I just dial it back?

I am also on the .211 version and i am automatically switching between 3G and 4G. Maybe it is related to what region you are in?

Correct. I live in Houston, so I have 4G basically anywhere I go in town.

Yikes! I hope that's fixed on the OTA! I'm always in a 4G/LTE area, but run CDMA 99% of the time because LTE will drain my battery in under 6hours. On 3G/CDMA, I can usually get 14-16 hours. Glad I just bought an external 1800mAh battery pack.
I'm using the app called "phone info" that was suggested earlier in this thread.
App works great and let's we switch to cdma only without a hitch, and but lte in enabled when I reboot my phone.
I also hope that this minor issue is corrected in the final product version. My phone will drain in a matter of about two or three hours of LTE the way I use it.

to make life even easier, download an app called minimalistic text. Once downloaded use it to create your our 3G/4G widget that once clicked on launches the phone info app, seems to work alright for the time being. but a dedicated 3g/4g switch would be great i dont see how something like this could be overlooked by moto/verizon
Just want to note that I'm having the same issue. I cannot find a way to turn off 4g, I tried dialing the 4636 number and it actually dialed the phone rather than launching the config menu. I'd like to be able to disable 4g at times since I am often in an area without 4g.

Is it True or BS that EVO LTE will have a fix for LTE connection issues?

I really like this phone but want to make sure that the LTE connection issues are able to be fixed with a software update. I hope Sprint isn't BS'ing on this. I have a couple of days to return the phone and want to make sure this is fixable before deciding to keep it.
Anyone know if the Sprint rep who said it's a software issue is telling the truth or BS?
At heart it is a good radio. No reason it shouldn't work as it's supposed to. So, the majority of the issue is software. And it is fixable. Maybe just as good as S3 and iPhone 5 LTE reception?
The big question here is if Sprint will actually fix it this time. Know that there were fixes for LTE in 2 previous ota's. To what extent they worked on it before, idk. Thinking that this time is make or break it.
So, the answer is wait and see. U can get out of contract if LTE doesn't work for u though. It's apart of your service plan. Gonna require persistence on your part to get out after the 14 days is up, but u can do it.
If I were u and needed a good LTE capable phone, I'd go with the S3. Because at this point, it is up in the air if it will receive LTE like it should in the near future.
Correction first update was wifi, second was lte lol
Hope so. Has to be software related since both this and the s3 have the same radio. And, since the airplane mode on/off trick gets it working, I'm lead to believe its software.

Airplane mode trick???
I really hope they can fix this. I decided to keep the phone after looking at the S3 screen and build quality I just couldn't switch. I really love the screen on this!! It is just as good as my wife's iPhone 5 in color reproduction. The S3 is nice but don't like PenTile as I can notice it and I don't like it when whites have a blue color to it.
The Evo LTE has the same SoC as the S3. If the Evo was having hardware problems with LTE so would the S3, but that is not the case (according to what I have been able to look up). Therefore it can be concluded that the LTE issues are software and not hardware.

AKA Airplane Mode Dance
If you are in an LTE area and your phone is stuck on 3G, or if your phone is on LTE and it drops back down to 3G, then toggling Airplane Mode ON and back OFF will make the radio scan and re-latch to LTE.
That's the problem with our EVOs, it's an LTE threshold and handoff problem.
I live right on the edge of LTE coverage, so my phone will handoff to 3G because it decides the LTE signal is too weak. The problem is, in my area a "weak" LTE signal is MUCH faster than a strong 3G signal. If I go into my radio options and choose "LTE only" it will hold LTE signal all day long. So the signal is there, albeit weak.
What we need is a software fix that will change our radio's signal threshold so that it will prioritize a weaker LTE signal over 3G.
I'm tired of doing the airplane mode dance. If LTE is available, I want my EVO to latch on and stay on it even if it's weak.

Thanks guys! Installing app now and have the data code saved for a rainy day as well
Edit : after switching to lte only, I get no data (voice or sms) but im able to run a speed test using 4g. I live in L.A. but I connect to an Albuquerque, New Mexico server I'm not sure what else I'm to do to enable lte only and keep data
It's NOT true for me that switching it to LTE only will keep it connected. I still only keep the connection for about 10 seconds and then it goes back to 3G. My understanding is that option in both *#*#4634#*#* and ##DATA# is "preferred mode." It will drop back to 3G.
And I know for sure that Sprint and HTC have an open ticket on this issue of aquiring and keeping an LTE signal. They will eventually get a fix out for it.
I used the network tool post earlier and set mine to cdma/lte... So I get 4g and voice/text.. no evdo. Which is fine by me because evdo sucks anyway lol.
Works great I now can keep 4g in my house like my gfs gs3 and not switch back to crap-do

[Q] LTE/4G/Edge/G radio switching

Hi everyone, I'm new to AT&T and HTC. I'm confused on how the networks should switch.
The area I'm in doesn't have LTE yet so lets leave this out of this
I'm having a signal issue at work. Where I sit I get 3 sometimes 2 bars (-97 to -101dBM) on the 4G network. But data doesnt work. When I use the browser it say error connecting to network and I when I run speed test it either doesnt find a tower or just sits on ping test.
When I look at mobile network type it keeps flipping between HSDPA and HSPAP. I've never see the phone change to the edge or G network unless my battery is almost dead.
Does this sound right or could I have a messed up radio? It does work great when the signal is in the -70s.
Please help. Wondering if my phone is messed up. It is still stock, locked bootloader, unrooted at the moment.

To turn off LTE, open dialer, type in "*#*#4636#*#*", then click "phone info", you will see "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto" in the middle of the setting page. Switch to "WCDMA preferred" to use only 3G without LTE. You can also choose "GSM" to use only edge network.
Is there not an App or Widget that can toggle LTE and Edge networks?

Global network mode gives you better signal

This is funny that you would post this because I just had the opposite experience. I am on an unlimited Verizon data plan + pay for the unlimited mobile hotspot so it's our primary internet and we use it all the time. 2 days ago when we got home from work we had about 2 hours to kill before going to a pot luck so i wanted to surf the interwebz (specifically to watch the Youtube video about the Other Guys movie where Will Ferrell talks about Tuna's attacking a lion....). It worked slowly at first and then totally died.
So i called up 611 and wanted to report bad towers because we've been having a lot of storms lately and the lady said there were none and that i should go into the settings you just showed and see if it was on global. It was and she had me change it to the LTE option and BAM! it was fixed. Instantly.
I had already tried power cycling my phone and it did nothing so i think this fixed it. I know she was reading off a script on her screen but she said when the phone is on global mode it tries to reach too far to reach GSM towers as well as LTE and can mess up the data connection.
I have no idea if it's true but it makes sense to leave it on the LTE option since i am not currently traveling.

I would leave it the way it is. As soon as VZW updates their 4G to use the AWS spectrum we should all see better signal strength and what not.

The reason for this is because you were probably connected to a tower that was not part of Verizon's own network. Turning off Global means your phone only accepts connections to Verizon's towers, which probably connected you with a faster tower.

Ya...except that won't even *begin* to happen until around the end of the year (October, if I'm not mistaken?), and only in select markets. It won't be in even a majority of LTE markets for another few years. AWS isn't even in its infancy yet.

Boy, so much wrong information in this thread that my head is starting to hurt.
Let me clarify this for everyone, before everyone starts going, "zOMG Global Mode is the best!!11"
The "Global Mode" has been around for Samsung since the S1. Simply put, it's a way to turn off the INTERNATIONAL radios when you're not traveling. The phone turns off the global ready band radios and only uses LTE/CDMA when you're on your home network when you select the non-global mode. That is it. Nothing more, nothing less. It's not a magical tool to get better signal. It does NOTHING for your signal here in the US, much the same way clearing battery stats does NOTHING for your battery life.
I always keep it off because the firmware eventually scans the global (GSM) bands and well, however small or minute that might be, it eats battery.
Unless you're in South America, or Europe, you don't need the global mode on.
If you ever see the phone asking you about Global mode, is because your phone was out of service for a set amount of time. After that timer has elapsed, the settings apk will ask you if you want to turn the Global feature on (it's trying to be smart and thinking you're out of the country since you have no domestic CDMA/LTE signal) It happens to me all the time in my car port.
Hope this helps.
