Cannot update - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Whenever I try to take the Verizon OTA update it goes into TWRP and doesn't do anything. When I reboot back it says there was an error and nothing changed. It then continues to prompt me for the update and this is very annoying. Is there any way I can manually update it or stop it from downloading and prompting me to update?

The Verizon OTA update will lock your bootloader. You've gotten lucky that you haven't been able to install it. Google around to find out how to get the service to stop bugging you to update.

Believe it or not, the answers to your questions have been covered ad nauseum. Your update fails because you are not stock. If you want to stop the nag, freeze SDM. Take the update, and you will lose the ability to use a custom recovery, kernel, or any flashable mods. Do your homework.

Tried other Roms, like the functionality of Touchwiz but hate the UI so for the time being I'll stick with the stock ROM. How do I freeze the SDM though?

Titanium backup or root toolbox pro have freezing options. If you dont want to buy tibu or rtp use es file explorer to rename it to sdm.apk.bak

Personally, I use Titanium Backup. Rom Toolbox Pro can also freeze it, I believe. SDM.apk is what you'll be looking to freeze or remove.

Unrooting

I am currently running a near stock Fascinate. All I have done is rooted no custom ROMS, no custom themes just rooted and froze some applications. I would like to unroot as the missed call problem is really bugging me and I think I am going to try and switch phones at the VZW store (I can't handle it anymore!) Now I know I can ODIN to DL09 then go to OTA that way, but I am wondering, because I have no custom Kernals and no custom Roms if there is a way to simple unistall my root access so that I don't have to go waste a day downloading the OTAs.

I think there was a one-click root method that may have allowed you to "unroot" your phone. but if I'm making this up, then that's the process you will have to go through in order to get your phone back to stock.
Odin'ing back to DL09 and then OTA'ing up to ED04 doesn't actually take that long. I went from CM7 to stock ED04 in about 30 minutes.

I know it doesn't take that long but I then have to go completely back to stock and download all my apps and such again. I decided I am just going to keep the fascinate but I want to know if there is a way to unroot so that when we FINALLY get Gingerbread I can OTA without much hassle!
If all you did was root and freeze apps, on any of ed ota's just unroot with super one click. It has an unroot button, just make sure you defrost your frozen apps and undo any other changes first. Or just go to the general section and follow the sticky on how to unbrick your fascinate, even links to zip files so you don't have to suffer through the ota's, ed04 unrooted stock takes like 20 MIN.

So the one click root is guaranteed to work on the fassy? When I unroot with Superoneclick Root, does it put me back to stock as in I would have to re-download all my applications, reset settings ETC or does it just un-establish root and leave me the same?
With superoneclick is it just like CWMing and then rooting with the SuperUser-Busybox.zip that I flash with ODIN?
I am a bit confused by it and I would just like some basic information pertaining to the Fassy rather than generic for all phones thanks!

I always just ODIN back to DL09 and am fixed everytime
I would use SuperOneClick. I just unrooted my wife's Fascinate with SuperOneClick and it worked perfectly. Just unfreeze your frozen apps and run SuperOneClick, click Unroot and in a few minutes, your phone will be unrooted. I would, however, uninstall the Superuser app before unrooting because every time I've used SuperOneClick to unroot a phone, it works, but the Superuser app remains on the phone.
Doing this will not restore your phone to factory. Any apps/data on your phone will remain on your phone.
Hope this helps.

VRUAME7 UPDATE with root....

So I downloaded VooDoo Root Keeper and backed up my root. Downloaded the OTA update and let it install. Once the phone rebooted I didn't have root, but I went into VooDoo Root Keeper and clicked Restore root. And Root Checker now report I have ROOT once again...
You have to reboot after restoreing root to get apps to work that require root.
And?

Lucky, i installed with nothing to backup root.
Even after installing complete stock, then updating it failed... I don't think this update likes my phone very much.
If I remember reading this correctly you have no problem getting root, it's just that you lose access to custom recoveries.. So therefore kind of pointless to update since you can't run custom roms

From what I read you will lose root with the OTA and not be able to re-root with the current known method. Am I wrong?

I agree the future custom roms will have the parts of the update we want and not the major part we don't. I'll never give up my custom recovery!!
Well I haven't ran any custom roms on this yet... But this is still helpful ad I do run AdAway, Faceniff and WifiKill... which all require Root .

It seems to have worked!
Following this process I was able to keep my root, have not tried using recovery though.
Use OTA RootKeeper to protect root, take OTA update, restore root using RootKeeper, update binaries using SuperSU. Existing apps that use root still work as expected!
Glad it worked for you too.
Has anyone else achieved this? I'm tempted to do it but obviously concerned as I do not want to lose root. I'm sure not every phone is the same.
Also, does anyone know if the OTA will work if you have frozen apps ( including frozen bloatware)?
sorry for the noob question, I got my 1st android device a couple weeks ago and I'm trying to get up to speed quickly.
I see some people saying they want to unroot to take the VRUAME7 update... and I see others saying they took the update which caused them to loose root privileges. So I'm still trying to determine if I need to (or should) unroot to take the update.
I have the stock ROM, so can I just take the update without unrooting first? If the update succeeds, what are the drawbacks of not unrooting prior to the update?
Note: I do plan to unroot first. this question is mostly just for my understanding.
If you unroot prior to the me7 update you will not be able to get it back. If you keep root with voodoo through the ota you lose custom recovery/ability to rom.

Keeping Root I545VRUDMI1

Not sure if its posted but I have been asked a bit about keeping root. I took the OTA from Verizhon not Kies so I am not sure if that makes up for anything. Anywho, I took the plunge with both Voodoo and SU Pro backing up my root and kept it. I know there are root methods out there for it already so its not horrible if you have lost it. Just letting you know, Voodoo, SU Pro works.,,

Voodoo does work.
I can attest to that. The biggest issue with updates after ME7 is now the knox warranty flag is included in the boot loader.
I see the knox status when I go into download mode and it was not there before.
I'm already rooted so the flag didn't trip.
Be careful with this update, only do it via OTA so that Voodoo can restore root.
If you do it vie Kies or Verizon software, you will lose root *AND* re-rooting may flip the flag.

Voodoo worked from me from rooted ME7 via OTA update. I got the "Custom" lock symbol on reboot after Voodoo restore, but Triangle Away seems to have corrected that. What is the Knox status? I'm not familiar with that so I don't know how to check that? Could you elaborate?

Did you use Kies or just the OTA? As I said in my post I used the OTA from the phone. Kies may be doing something additional to the phone.
Worse case scenario is you will need to reflash ME7/ MI1 from odin and root again using the "root de le vega" method

DO you have TiBu and freeze/ deleted bloat and stock apps? If that's the case depending on what it was it will error. Like I said I took mine over the phone after checking for it the other day manually. If manual doesn't work Kies will update it when plugging into your PC.
Hopefully if anything was deleted a backup of stock was made and you can reload it. If not, just try unfreezing everything thing. Assuming you are using or have used TiBu.
After unfreezing several Verizon apps and 3 battery pulls, I was able to download and attempt to install the update only to have it fail at install...

Have you deleted anything not just freeze? If there is a fail on install its usually a self check fail... something it's looking for is missing.
I have the stock ME7 image and could upload it to drop box so you could reflash on odin, LMK. To me it sounds like a app or stock system piece is missing. I've seen OTAs fail on Motorola phones simply because the yahoo app was deleted. I know, it doesn't make sense, but its what the phone self checks before installing the download.
Titanium doesn't sow any apps deleted but I did have Samsung watch set to user app. Adjusted that back and still nothing. Going to try pulling SD card tomorrow and try the update again. Guess we'll see what happens

I still think a clean slate wipe is in order. Other people even on the Root De La Vega report a taking OTA it working and keeping it as well.
Like I said, I froze but never deleted, but if if you deleted the backups stored in TiBu at one point, the deleted app its not going to show in TiBu. Thats why I always make a backup first of the fresh phone and upload it to drop box before even freezing things.
I may end up going that route. Good thing we can backup apps to the moon with tibu! Have u noticed improvements on the new update?

Nothing has caught my eye. Others are reporting the 4G is now operating off another/additional frequency or something like that, l and getting better reception but I have never had a problem where I live.
Did u happen to backup all your apps before rooting? I'm thinking I must have an app that was deleted and not backed up. I found that NFL was that way so installed and changed it to a system app with tibu

I'm trying to take the ota update but i'm a newb and didn't read about ME7's inability to flash roms and used ROM Manager to flash CWM. I think i need to restore the "stock" recovery in order to take the ota update.
Long time reader, first time poster.
Three questions.
1) For the "root de le vega" method, can I use 'Odin Mobile Pro'?
I don't have a PC so I can't easily use 'Odin' and i'm not sure how 'Odin Mobile Pro' relates to 'Odin'.
Is it the same thing but internal?
2) I have frozen tons of apps.
From my understanding from earlier posts, I need to unfreeze them all or this will fail?
3) After the Mi1 OTA, will my hotspot not work? or my wifi all together?
Thanks in advance

Knox disappear from my device but exist in my notification bar! how to delete it

Hello guys, I am still consider myself new to rooting, I did it just to do some tests that was 2 months ago. I remember knox was so annoying in the notification screen, it just wont go away so I had to use Titanium backup to completely uninstall it for good. However, today, I realized sprint release android version 5 for note 3 so I decided to update my phone, everything went great except Knox it came back, I tried to disable it via application but that app is not exist in my device, I even tried to search for it, but it stuck in my notification bar!
Please if you have any idea about how to remove Knox from notification let me know it would make my day.
Hello again,
In case someone have similar situation, I downloaded Package Disabler free from Play store and it help to prevent Knox
Thanks

I do not have root after I updated my device and not willing to root it again for now, thank you for respond.
I'm confused...if you're 100 stock you should not be receiving any Knox notification.
When you ran Odin, did you boot into stock recovery and perform a factory reset? Only time you should see a notification is if you are running something (i.e. SuperSU) that would invoke that notification

[(rooted) Galaxy S4 verizon SCH-I545 5.0.1] switch custom recovery from CWM to TWRP

i recently rooted my Galaxy S4 verizon SCH-I545 5.0.1 My main reason for doing so is because i want to install CM12 (to improve battery and no bloatware) but need to back up my stock ROM before wiping anything, so i can restore if anything gets messed up but when i installed CWM via ROM manager app , i booted in recovery only to discover that i didn't have the option to back up my stock ROM...nothing that says "back up and restore" or anything remotely close...so after alot of reading a searching it looks like TWRP was the one that most suggested for my phone. My question is, can i just use Flashify and flash TWRP over the existing CWM?? will this mess anything up or brick my phone??? please help and excuse my ignorance

I did want to mention if you're really new that I'd be careful with the apps. Generally it's not good to uninstall or delete system apps and sometimes Google apps are the same way. A lot of times but not always, you can freeze those and be alright, other times it'll make your phone go crazy so I'd check out the posts on the safe apps to freeze. Another good thing about freezing them is if you have any issue, just unfreeze those.

Of1 rooted, roll back to MDK?
I have vzw s4 rooted with odin on OF1 and took the 5.0.1 OTA update. Is it possible to rollback to MDK or earlier version of Android so i can install TWRP or CWM, to be able to flash whatever custom rom i choose? Like do i need to downgrade say to 4.3 so i can upgrade to 6.0 cm13? If this is at all possible which android should i downgrade to?
Similar question here. I have a Verizon S4 (SCH-I545) and am on OF1. I just did a full factory restore using the recovery assistant software, I did not get an option of a version. From what I have been reading, it sounds like there is no way to get back to an earlier version, is that really true? I find it very hard to find current information, most of what I dig up seems to be dated. I just rooted the phone. All I really want is to install the AOSP ROM. I don't care what hoops I have to jump through, if only there is a path! I have tried Odin but keep getting an error that again I have not found any useful info on.
