Xperia Ultra for gaming - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Since a few people have got the phone already I was wondering what their gaming experience has been like.
With the screen and processor/GPU this may be not just the best gaming phone but perhaps the best portable gaming device out there.
Which games use the Ultra's hardware to the fullest? Are there any Android games with 1080p ?

SG deadzone, Asphalt 7, need for speed, minio rush ..................... Work great, smooth without lag. Visual so reality. Only the sound from the device not good. Better use headset.
Sent from my C6802 using xda premium

Dead Trigger works like a charm too though im not sure if it is 1080p not that i think anyone can tell
With graphics setting on high, everything is fluid but the 3000mah battery only lasted me about 3hrs of gameplay on low brightness (0%)
and the screen makes gaming awesome too

TDKR (Batman) looks great every time I play.

There are ZU gaming videos on YouTube.

Whatabout emulators? Does the software home/back icons interfere with the virtual buttons that sometimes get pretty close to the edge of the screen?

I have no idea. Search YouTube for something like "Nexus 4 emulator games". Why the Nexus 4? It has on-screen buttons. Either way, if they don't disappear while gaming and it bothers you, you can choose to wait (if you decide to get the ZU) until the ZU gets root. You'll then be able to quickly toggle the buttons on and off.

Hmm, if you toggle it off, how would you be able to "quit" your apps since the back button is missing? For my current note 2, if the app freezes or something goes funky, I can hit the hardware button and force the device back to the main screen, so I'm not sure how that works for onscreen buttons since I've never owned a device with no home button.

I confirm game performance are sick. There is no lag at all.
Do you remember that part on "Iron man" when on first startup there is lag (you know that moment). Here on Xperia Z Ultra there is no lag at all....I guess adreno 330 is good gpu.

CM10.1 has a feature that's called "Expanded desktop" which hides the status and navbar. You can enable/disable this by pressing and holding the power button (like you do when you want to power off/reboot your phone), and you'll get the option there. This is available system wide, so it's always an option to enable them again no matter where you are (games etc.). That's a custom ROM though, and i'm sure there is a similar mod for the Xposed framework (100% speculation), so you don't have to flash a ROM, but being rooted will be enough.

Ah thanks for the clarification. I've always been weary of custom roms due to bugs (camera not working, GPS feature broke, can't make calls, etc) but that's for another discussion.

What are the best emulators to use?

Depends which system you're emulating. Which ones you have in mind

most games are actually 1080p already smooth even for Adreno 320, you can tell by taking a screenshots and having a look at the pixels
- Shadowgun deadzone, 1080p + AA, 60fps on Adreno 320
- Modern Combat 4, 1080p, 60fps on Adreno 320
- Temple Run 2, 1080p, 60fps on Adreno 320
- Asphalt 7, 1080p, 60fps on Adreno 320
- Need for Speed Most wanted, 1080p, 60fps on Adreno 320
- FrontLine commando, D-Day, 1080p, very smooth on Adreno 320
- Fast and Furious 6, 1080p, very smooth on Adreno 320
- Ripetide GP 2, scalable from ingame options, variable smoothness on Adreno 320
- Beach buggy blitz, scalable from ingame options, variable smoothness on Adreno 320
- Iron Man 3 runs in sub 1080p, like 720p scaled up, variable smoothness on Adreno 320
- Real Reacing 3 sub 1080p as well, variable to average smoothness on Adreno 320
on Adreno 320 all the above games run liquid smooth already with the exception of Beach buggy blitz, Ripetidge GP2, IronMan 3 and Real Racing which seems to jump between 20fps and 60fps, these are the best games to test the new powers of Adreno 330

Important is not to see what about already existing games. Using a Nexus 7 with custom kernel and none of those games are lagy. The 330 is yet to have show it's power as there is no game using 100% of it now a day. Need to see upcoming games and upcoming custom kernels as well. This device is really promising, only lack as for any device is the time the battery last while playing. Almost time the only solution is to play while plug to the wall, but it kill the battery.

Are there any upcoming games which are likely to put the 330 to full use?

Actually no, and I am happy about it. Would feel really bad if just after put my hands on the latest phone with latest GPU, the GPU would already be at its limits. But with time everything come.

cytus
Anybody tried playing cytus on ZU while putting it on a table? Had a lot of misses when I have to press two notes together as though my finger wasn't detected.

Real Racing 3

Just wait until we get JB 4.3. The Snapdragon 800 supports OpenGL 3.0, which is one of the new features in 4.3. Games will look even better.

will ics hw acceleration save our batts?

Hello android fellas..i am an sgs 2 owner and a log time android user..for the most of android devices the most screen time i could ever get is 5 hours (screen on, not idle..idle means ntn..with uv i can get week++)..
So the question i rise here is, will ice cream sandwitch help our battery effeciency with hw acceleration?i noticed that my phone can do as much as 10 hours+ of video playback, but can only surf the web for around 4-4,5 ...which is amazingly ridiculous..if i let the phone idle , with screen turned on, at all times(there are actually apps to do that) i can get almost 11 hours of screen on time..but if i use my phone to as much as navigate through menus, i am lucky if i get 30% of that time.
That led me to the conclusion that cpu usage for 2d ui elements drawing is at best idiotic, but other than that, its that its not my device(s) problem..its the os that sucks it up..
So, do you believe, that ICS will fix that?is there hope on the horizon?4 hours screen on time/day , just wont cut it for a tought work day for me..
( i would like to close that section by saying that i am a 2 year android user and i know what i need to shut down, when to have on and what so that my batt is at its max effeciency..)
Opinions please? Will our GPUs make us look less embarassing?
Unlikely... partially, because the majority of actions needed by a web browser is unable to utilize the GPU (it's really only usable for compositing and rendering, which occurs surprisingly seldom outside of games: really only while the document loads... of course that's bound to change at some point, but for now, there really isn't much to gain other than more fluid animations), but mostly because it's a bit of an unfair comparison: Video playback today is more or less handled by special-purpose silicon, not what you'd usually call "The GPU".

no, i am aware that java still needs to be rendered in cpu... but i was not only bein referred to in browsing...menu browsing as well..ui navigation should be humongousl benetited am i right?
Accelerated is usually faster and smoother, especially multiple layers benefit greatly from additional acceleration (note however, that Android already uses that in most cases)... it just doesn't really translate to power saving.
Java doesn't really have anything to do with that: it may put a bit of additional load on the CPU, but that's not what's eating your battery, especially since virtually all computation-intensive parts of Android are written in C++. The real problem is that while the GPU is faster in these "burst" situations when there's suddenly a whole lot of layers to render, it's hard to predict those. So the CPU most always run at an acceptable rate... which in the end often means that the accelerated version uses more power since the system isn't able to clock down the CPU nor the GPU.

Damn..The load that cpu took from being less effecient to draw 2d, was my best explaination as to why our batteries suck so much..
It is definately not the phones..As i said earlier if i let the phone screen on, just idling, at, say auto brighness, it can go for 10-11 hours..but if during that time i, as much as navigate at menus, or settings , or whatever ui...BAM..4-5,5 hours maximum..
It HAS to be something wrong with the os..heck i can do 10 hours of .avi playback on a single charge , but i cannot go over 5 for just panning around the app drawer..(and my screen is amoled so it greatly benefits from black background of the drawer)...
If you could shed some light to that, for me i'd love ya even more!
Btw on my second post i meant to type javascript, not java my bad!

Having Input - Screen Lag for a while - No solution so far

http://dropproxy.com/f/74D
Here is the video i tried to take regarding the screen lag.
Its all real time , there is no , afaik any camera lag ( taken with sg3) , its pretty much how it looks . Also i have shown the FPS . You can see when i scroll slowly , the FPS drops to 20 or so making it jerky. if i do it fast , it reaches 50+ but not stable and not very responsive to my touch feedback either.
I have tried Bexus Kernel with OC GPU , still the same . Is there anyway to force the tablet to display at bare minimum of 30FPS ? I planned to read lot of PDF, but this jerkiness is giving me headache.
Can anyone help me ?
what rom are you running? no screen lag for me on a really old cm10 build. pretty much consistent framerate, though it is kinda slow
i think part of the problem here was B&N's choice of using a PowerVR SGX 540 GPU in this tablet. this particular GPU was also used in the entire original Samsung Galaxy S line, and is at this point 5-7 years old. not a particularly great GPU in my book. granted, we're not pushing a really high screen resolution (1024x600) but still, it's a really old GPU.
CM 11 Snapshot M5 i think. Using along with Bexus kernel.
I can lower the resolution if needed , all i want is a stable framerate display , ready to sacrifice some battery too.
I agree the tablet is kind of old , but i just want to use this as some secondary reading tablet. i have no use for it now.
Try turning off "Magnification Gestures". This has caused input lag for me before.
Go to Settings>Accessibility
its off only`

Buy another phone, not Huawei their Kirin processors are not good. They somehow perform well in benchmarks but they are a lot worse in real life than snapdragon or exynos (and of course apple)
I benchmarked many games... Maximum 10 min of gaming then there is thermal throttling because it gets too hot. Then fps drops 1/3 at least.
Just tested pubg on HDR setting and anti aliasing enabled. It starts with 40fps but after 5 min drops to 15-25fps and also lags, unplayable.
Even normal games with not so good graphics get fps drops after 10-15min like Sonic. Common Huawei, my sister is playing Sonic on a 250€ Samsung A5 2017
Look at the screenshots, it starts with 40fps but many lags and frame drops. After a couple minutes it drops to constant 20fps. The other shows CPU usage but that is not working obviously. Somehow it gets an average of 30fps but that's bs. It is not playable.
Yeah.. Same with me when i switch to HD settings of pubG it lags little bit.. But when i switch on HDR it become unplayable. I will upgrade to one plus soon.
Thanks
if you got root then disable the power genius app and restart. this app slows phone down to prevent overheat. i tested this with pubg and asphalt 8 at 60fps. constant 60 FPS even after 30 mins of gaming. with HDR i get constant 40-45.
PS: the phone will get warm because of 12 GPU cores so be in a cool room while playing.
same here. using m10p and lagging on PubG even on High settings. But it improved on the latest firmware (BLA-L29 C636 B138)
PUBG lagg on Mate 10 Pro not because of Kirin. It laggs because PUBG is not optimized game at all. Same for people that play PUBG throu their desktop computers. I watched my friend playing PUBG on his 2k PC and still gettin' FPS dropped and lagg. Although Mate gets hot after 10 till 20 minutes of gaming.
Interesting to read this, I have a Note 8 atm and I play a lot of PUBG, I'm about to trade my Note 8 in for a Mate 10 Pro (Don't judge) as I'm a little bored of my phone now and annoyed of the poor battery life and awful mono speaker. The Mate 10 Pro ticks more boxes for what I require, so I'm hoping a software update will fix the FPS.
I don't play PubG but I do however play the recently released Asphalt 9 which as far as I know is pretty intensive and get minimal heat and it runs smooth for well over a hour, I don't notice any FPS drop, I haven't checked statistically what it's running at while playing but if the drop was severe then I'd definitely notice it

Thanks for this info, sounds like I should expect similar to what I get at the moment then, maybe an improvement once the update comes out to boost the GPU.
I used to play Shadow Fight 3. Till the release of update 142 it worked flawlessly, even on longer playing sessions....then,dunno what brains of Huawei did,it became unplayable.

Sounds to me that they like bringing out these new features, meaning these new features are "let's break something that worked perfectly before"...that's the gist I've got off these forums.....I'm hoping I'm not going to regret my decision now I've ordered the Mate 10 Pro
Exactly. That was my thought too.
But I'm keeping it cuz of job and unrivaled battery life. As a business phone it's flawless.

One of the main reason I'm moving to the Mate 10 Pro is for battery life, it'll be nice to have a phone that can last a whole day with heavy use, my last phone that did that was iPhone 6s Plus.

Boosting Gaming Performance and Experience on karate/karatep (Lagging, Screen Flash)

Yes, yes, you landed here because you could not put that last shot in the head while on the brink of health and got shot because of that... LAG!
(a generic PUBG Mobile Player on karate/karatep)
You have:
*the best 20Mbps connection (and look jealously at your friend's RedMi Note 4's smooth gaming, with better graphics)
*often exited the game by pressing back or home repeatedly (again you look at Samsung/Mi's gaming mode preventing keypress)
*that flash flash flash on the screen like an Indian television soap, even with the lowest settings (that's a frame rate issue)
And then you think...yeah the Lenovo advertisement said "Unleash Kickass Power & Performance" on K6 Power.
So now that the generic user has rooted, and running on a lightweight rom such as lineageOS 8.1, what has he or she or heshe got to do?:victory:
A slightly helpful article: https://www.xda-developers.com/improve-fps-pubg-android-games-gfxtool/ (but this mostly for pubg, might be applicable to other games) #SupportTheDeveloper
Buy Redmi note 4 :+)
don't make my phone cry. it already submitted to note 4
Rather suggest some tweaks apart from opengl msaa forcing and clearing ram

Nexus 9 gaming performance

This tablet is the same as the shield tablet how come it play games so badly if this can begin what’s the best custom rom and Kerman to play games on?
It overheats and throttles. The Tegra K1 in this tablet is not the same as the one in the Shield tablet. Same GPU, much different CPU. This one gets hotter. It really is too hot for a fanless tablet if you try to run it at full utilization for a long period of time, as a game will.
You can try underclocking the CPU. That will probably make it perform better for games because the GPU will run faster.
Actually it's not really "overheating" exactly. It has a temperature limit and once it hits that temp, it slows down the CPU and GPU to stay under that temp. It's a power limit. It uses too much power to run at full speed continuously for a long period of time in a tablet.
I'm using Slimrom with Fire Ice Kernel.
PUBG runs pretty well using gfxtools with low setting + 30fps.
But the game began to lag after 15min due to thermal throttle.
Will try the heatsink mod later and hopefully able to improve the performance...
