Is there an easy way to unlock this phone without a root?
No you have to be rooted. Root your phone with update.zip A and download an app called Galaxy S unlock to unlock your phone. Here is the link for the unlock app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.helroz.galaxysunlock

Try getting unlock codes from your carrier?
Worth a shot.
Rooting is usually a much less annoying route though. Getting codes from carriers can be like pulling teeth depending on the rep you get.

This is probably a dumb question but if you are running an AOSP rom do you still need to unlock it? Or can you pop a different sim in there. Sorry for my novice.

Hi,
I'm rooted and using Trigger rom, will there be an issue if I get the unlocked code from Tmobile and unlock the phone? Or is it better to use galaxy s unlock app from the market?
Thanks
There shouldn't be any issue getting it from T-Mo, since they're just going to give you the same code the galaxy unlock app would, assuming the unlock app even works. Only reason to use the unlock app is if you want your code before your contact is up.

AWESOME Thanks!
I am thinking on if it's possible to unlock xperia x10 by rooting and flashing with custom rom (maybe very different, like miui). Can someone stop my dream, or is there some possibilities for it to become true?
Stop dreaming the answer is no...

thanks for the reply. So, even if I flash miui rom, I will get the asking for the unlock code, either I start an irremediably destruction process? This means that it is not part of the rom... But, is there any possibility to access to its memory and erase/modify/bypass it? I thought that with root privileges, we could do everything...
Its not a part of the rom.
If you want to get rid of your simlock you need to buy the code..its cheap like 5 dollars.
At this moment there is not a way to bypass or unlock it with custom rom or tools

any suggestion for the 5 dollars code? The cheaper I found was above 40...
Thanks...
What I did is called AT&T and told them, hey I'm planing on going overseas for a week or two, and would love to bring my phone and use it, the place I'm going they use sim cards too, so is there a way I can use my phone??? In 2 min they emailed me a code amd instructions on how to. You can try the same... worst they can do is say NO

I paid 30.00 for a carrier unlock on my bell atrix. I'm running on rogers right now. I've rooted the phone and applied the webtop HDMI hack. I really want to unlock the bootloader and try a new Rom as I hate the white menus Motorola ruined this phone with. My question is if I will loose my similar unlock by unlocking the bootloader or installing a custom rom? I have no idea where the similar unlock is stored. And stupidly I didn't save a copy of the code one it was similar unlocked. Speaking of which, is there any way to see the unlock code in the phone since its already unlocked.
Thanks in advance.

Once carrier unlocked, always carrier unlocked

Unlocking the phone, though done through software, is actually a hardware process. When you run the software for the unlock, a particular fuse is burned out and that is completely irreparable by any kind of software, ROM, SBF or otherwise.
Enjoy your permanently unlocked phone!
Thanks alot guys, I didn't know it was a paermament hardware thing. I guess I'm off to a new adventure.

Not sure if this will help you, as I dont use JB, and i'm not sure if you are carrier unlocked or not. but in order to do so, you will need to be loaded with a stock rom, in order to use the unlock code you are given.
you may already know, and have done this, but you'll need to be on the rom your phone came with, if possible...
hope this helps...g
Use any modem you like. Roms and modems are independent. Don't get too excited or upset once you flash your rom/modem. It seems to take a few reboots and a few hours to settle in.
cool...dint know i had to be in stock to use an unlocked code thought

If its not stock, the box to enter the code never appears
but once unlock it doesn't matter if I flash the device will stay unlocked right?

unlock is permanent.
I'm currently using paranoid android ROM and I'm told I can't unlock my device using a ROM that's not stock
is it safe to just flash to it from cwm or are there other steps I need to add?
oh and by the to what would be the ROM I'd need to flash for stock as I do not have my att one that came with my device

Stick a different carrier sim card into the phone and it should still prompt you to unlock it regardless of ROM.
I am not stating this as fact but that has been my experience unlocking phones. Reverting to stock may be required.
I was told that on an other thread which seemed seemed odd at the time but decided to ask anyways
I'll do just that thanks man

I said that about stock. cellphoneunlocker.net said stock. The remote guy doesn't say stock, but he asks you to type in some dialer codes to see if you are stock-ish. At&t expects stock.
Like Flapjaxxx said, before you do anything try another carrier's sim and see if the network control screen is what you see at booting. If you do, good. Enter the code and enjoy.
Several users of non-stock roms said they never got the network control screen when they booted, but they got a status alert saying incorrect sim, so they tried to enter the code in the dialer but the phone stayed locked. So they went to stock and got it done.
Try it and see. You can't break anything. And sorry if you feel I was misinforming anyone. I always try to give the safest answer I can.
no prob that's why I asked
