Thinking of switching to the One? DON'T do it! - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I've been extremely happy with my Evo LTE, but I've been off of contract since last October and was due for any upgrade. I didn't want to drop down $200 for a new phone unless I was convinced it was something I wanted to keep for the next 2 years. I had read a bunch of positive stuff about the One and was intrigued by the 4 "ultra-pixel" camera. I used the camera on the Evo LTE a lot and thought it was one of the best I'd seen on a phone, but the great low-light ability and the zero-shutter delay of the One sounded like promising. Long story short... last week, I picked up one from Dell mobile for $29.99 plus a set of Beats ear-buds and a $50 gift card ( sweet deal, right?). The phone is fast enough and the call quality is very good, but the camera plain and simple... sucks. It's decent in low light, but it doesn't nearly make up for the terrible blurriness and lack of detail. In all serious, my 3.2MP camera from 13 years ago embarrasses the shooter on this phone. The only way I could see this being acceptable is by people who never view their pictures on anything larger than the phone screen and use the camera for stuff like Intragram or Facebook. Thinking about printing out an 8x10? Forget it.
I thought for a while that the phone was defective, but a quick Google search for "HTC One blurry" and a less than encouraging pep talk from the manager at the local Sprint store ("You can't expect the same quality as the Evo. It's only 4 MP!") convinced me otherwise.
So, if you want to take nice pictures and are due for an upgrade, I strongly suggest steering clear of the HTC One. The ultra-pixel might be a solid performer in the future, but for now it's a huge step backwards.
The attached of the car are from the One taken today, and the ice sculpture was taken in 2000 with a Nikon 3.2MP camera.

If youre looking for incredible quality get a damn camera.
For $29.99 the One is a catch and a half.
You buy Beats Headphones and actually listen to Sprint reps.
I dont trust your opinion.

And this has to do with the LTE how?

Evo 3D camera vs Evo 4G (Evo 1) cam

How do u guys think the Evo 3D still pictures will compare in quality to the original Evo?
I know megapixels isn't everything, and of course I'm talking only about 2D stills, but I'm wondering if the still pictures from the 3D will be better

I disagree. The Evo 1's camera is adequate and even better than my 4 year old camera. I take pictures exclusively with it now and they look pretty damn good.
Granted, I'd never spend $1500 on a freaking camera and you might be one of those "photographer" types (i put that in quotes because I don't consider that a real profession, merely a hobby that people get paid for) who believe that an 8mp cell phone camera should look like an 8mp nokia whatever-x5000. It's a cell phone, the camera is more a convenience. Considering 5 years ago, pictures with a cell phone looked like an 8-bit video games, I'd say they're making fantastic and amazing headway on itty bitty tiny mobile cameras.
On that note, since it's a year later and technology has improved, the Evo 3d really should have a better camera than an Evo 4g. Especially since the camera is a key feature in the new hardware.
From what I've seen in review videos (also taking into account that I'm not getting the full experience through a camera), the pictures have a pretty good quality, but I'd have to see them in person to accurately judge them.

Hmm, I am sure there are MANY people that would take offense to that. How is photography any less of a profession then any other job? I would like to see you even come close to some of the pictures professionals can take. The cameras crap on it...
yeah those nokia cameras are ****ing sweet
I wonder why they didn't put dual 8mp on the back, instead of the dual 5mp it's got now?

Because MP have nothing to do with quality? It's how big it can be printed out, and to be honest you can't print a 3D picture, so yeah.
They did however mention that the cameras have a CMOS sensor (the sensor is what creates quality, MP have nothing to do with it) so I have extremely high hopes for this camera. If it does what I'm expecting it'll be my upgrade path most likely.
HTC usually either has hits or miss on the camera. Well just have to wait and see.

Yea your right. My hd2 is only 5mp and it takes really good photos. Was just wondering why they decided with 5mp, when the evo has 8mp.

Two 8mp images per 3d picture is probably why. 5mp will take enough space as it is.
That and the thing is... there really is no way currently to have a "great" 8 mp camera on a phone, with a lens/ sensor that small.
Yea the reason for 5mp instead of dual 8mp has to do with image/video file size more than likely.
As for the Evo 1 camera, is have to say its the first phone camera I even considered replacing my real camera with. I have a 12mp ~$200 Sony camera that I never use. 4x6 prints look just as good on both. The Sony handles low light better, but its not worth carrying an extra device

i dont really care about an upgrade to the camera, as i find it is decent enough for its usability and quality
BUT
they better work on that damned flash....while my pictures are good on the evo, at night everyone is a ghost

My 2cents on this:
Photography is an art, just like painting, tattoos, piercings, acting (stage and TV) and have all been around for as long as history has been written (except for the acting on TV of course). But to talk about getting paid for a hobby, lets now include sports (ALL Sports) and these are also considered "hobbies" but these people get paid more than doctors, engineers, lawyers, etc. You don't complain about them though.
About the camera, like said before....its a phone, 5MP is awesome AND IT HAS TWO. For daily use, it should/will get the job done. If your a "professional" D) then you would not even consider using the phone for your work. It's called convenience and it's why you pay $700 for a phone that can play movies, pictures, search the web, play low quality game (that can be addictive), TEXT, have a camera and flashlight with you at all times, GPS (all this on a relatively small screen) and I guess make a call.
Don't discriminate!
I'm a massive fan of the EVO and am pre-ordering the 3D immediately. That being said, the EVO 1 pictures aren't as good as the Iphones. In Outdoor, sunny situations they are excellent but indoors they suck compare to the iphone. Also, the flash handling really is garbage, I'm always trying to adjust the white balance to account for it or take my picture slightly further back etc etc. It's just ****ty and then I see my brother iPhone 4 pics using OOTB settings taking the same stupid picture of our family at the table and its way better.
I would really like to see some information stating that the CMOS sensor is 2x as good...it certainly better be!!
Another note, the iPhone 4 video is a WORLD above the EVO in lower light. It embarrassing. I brag about my phone but then can't use the video from a basketball game because its indoors and again...brothers iPhone videos look pretty good.
A side note, can't stand apple and their draconian koolaid they sell all the schmucks on
Camera Quality
I've found that when were dealing with pictures in natural lighting, the results are absolutely AMAZING, but when it comes to low light, darkness and requiring the flash, that is when the coloring was off and blurry etc. i would expect the same from the new camera just as basically every phone cam i've seen.

[Q] Sure hope the camera is better?

I really really hope the camera is better than the evo 4g Im really tired of all my friends taking perfect pictures and videos with their iphones while my evo only takes good pictures of nonmoving things in daylight and audio from video is absolutely horrible. I go to concerts all the time and have a 12k dj setup and while my iphone friends can take perfect audio and video of both, i have to wait for them to send me the vids they took. And have to get them to send me pics from all the events we go to because my camera cant handle low light or people that dont stand completely still. This will be the issue that makes or breaks it for me. Anyone know if it will be better? And carrying a "real" camera with everyday for my day to day pictures isnt an option.
Been an HTC user for years, really hoping i can continue
I'm with you there. I was at possibly the last Pink Floyd concert and all my pictures came out like ****.

You lucky man! Man I would die to see Floyd, I missed him on his Pulse tour in the States
If you watch the wirefly review of the phone the guy states his wife is a professional photographer and she had a chance to use the camera on the Evo3D and said that it was her new favorite camera.
Now I don't know if she is really a professional or she just liked to take 3D pictures but it's a start.
Im mean, 3D is kinda cool, but i hope they got closer to perfecting normal pics and vid before deciding to take on 3D. But stranger things have def happened!
maybe im the only person that thinks its a huge issue, but it is my biggest issue by far, especially when so much emphasis is put on the cameras! Like the amazing 8mp camera on the evo 4g that sucks A$$$$$$$$$
I too am hoping for this. I hate that the 5 mega pixel camera on my wifes epic blows the evo 4g out of the water. It is truely a piece of ****.
I think you guys are hard on the ol 4g I've taken some real nice pics with mine..as long as its well lit .but the review shots looked great I'm excited
I think it will be okay for stills but suck anus otherwise. Well light stills that is.

What are the pros/cons of your Amaze?

I'm a first time Android user (I'm a former employee of T-Mobile so I messed around with a lot of phones so I'm not new to the Android game) and I have been a Nokia user my whole life. I bought my Amaze 2 weeks ago for 1 purpose.
My Comcast internet sucks for my Xbox Live so I bought the Amaze to use as my HotSpot. Other than that, there are pros and cons of this phone.
The phones I had previously for the past 6 years are Nokia 6680, Nokia N95, Nokia 5800, Nokia N97 and the Nokia N8. As you can see, I only used Nokia. I realized some major differences from Nokia and HTC.
The Pros:
- Beautiful, clear and vivid 4.3″ screen
- Super fast (Overclocked at 1.73GHz)
- Very durable and strong
- A built in Task Manager
- Running on T-Mobile HSPA+ 42mb network
- Can have the bootloader unlocked so you can root and install a custom ROM (do at your own risk)
The Cons:
- Original battery doesn’t last as long (Compared to my Nokia N8)
- The camera is not the greatest. I say it's a POS compared to my Nokia N8
- The sound quality in a phone call is horrible (Compared to my Nokia N8)
- The useless capacitive Search button (Waste of space)
My N8 has a better aluminum casing. It's actually scratch resistant. I never had a scratch mark on it.
I definitely miss Nokia's durability and hardware but I just wish Nokia had caught up with the market.
Now tell me what you like about your Amaze compared to your other phones. This should also help people who are looking to buy an Amaze to get a better idea of it and to hear what people have to say about it.
it is becoming annoying every prospective buyer of the amaze opening a new thread whether or not to buy the phone, what the issues are etcetc. anyways solid built phone, camera is great, screeen is awesome, battery doesnt last too long, sometimes overheats but no worries wont burn your fingers, some complain about the screen bleed but I dont find it a big deal, microphone sucks if u were to record something. thats pretty much it.
I love the qHD resolution. It's beautiful on the 4.3in screen (to be fair I loved it on the Sensation as well, still do ). The build quality is nice. I like the weight of it in my hand. It's fast, (even though I've been too lazy to unlock the bootloader...and spoiled by having true S-off on my Sensation.). I do love the camera. It seems to take brighter pics (with less noise) than my Sensation ....and I'm really happy since TMo released the WiFi calling update recently.
Sent....from the desk of Pipsqueak O.
I bought HTC Amaze instead of HTC Sensation because of these four reasons.
-headset/Speaker loudness
-more storage/ram/cpu
-dust get into battery case through microphone.
-NFC
Right now, all of my family members are using HTC Amaze as their dash cam, Amaze have never reboot during recording even it runs real hot. I never thought this little phone able to record non-stop 1hour 1080p video
The phone was running hot but very clear enough to read license plate of passing cars with the right condition. ( due to my sh*ttty T-mobile OEM car kit )

Input from people coming from EVO 3D

I can get this phone for about $60. Only issues with my 3D are the Virgin Mobile firmware junk (I don't think this affected me as bad as others), and the somewhat crappy camera. I don't use the 3D function, but the camera and video recorder still seem lower grade to me. Took a bunch of pics and video of my lil guy's preschool graduation, and was not impressed by the quality from a not so far distance. Besides that this phone still rocks. Just wondering what the thoughts are of people who came from a E3D?
Performance in general is much better (get quadrant scores of 5000 on the LTE), and so is the camera. I was running ICS on my 3D, so general functionality is pretty much the same for me.
I liked getting rid of the extra "3D toggle" button since I never used 3D anyways. the LTE is slightly bigger, but considerably lighter. Call quality/signal seem about the same unfortunately. Maybe once the "HD voice" is available that will change.

I agree with this
I actually used the 3d feature alot (went as far a ripping my 3d BD-roms to ms SDcard to watch without glasses)
I purchased my Lte for $158 and I am overly pleased with its performance and feel but the Camera is a night and day difference... My 3d had overly muted colors and it was usually full of noise and when your using the camera to take pictures of kids you get blurring alot. I've had mine a little less than a day but the battery is awesome to boot so if you can upgrade do so
Awesome. I figured the regular camera mode on the 3D would be sufficient, but I'd have to agree on the noise and blurring. Thanks for the comparison input guys.

I only had the 3D for about a week before my LTE came, but it feels way better than the 3D ever did. It was a great phone, but I am more satisfied with the ELTE in every way. Screen, native software, camera, processing power. I can't think of a single thing that this phone can't beat. That's because it's much more new, but this was also my switch to Sprint, and your HTC selection has always been far superior to Verizon's, so I'm pretty geeked over this phone.
It all comes down to how you feel about your current phone. If you're satisfied, stay where you are, but if you're not, this phone is a great way to fix it.
Tapatalked from my shiny new HTC Evo LTE
The screen alone makes it worth it.
Bonus: camera, kickstand, lightness, and battery life
I couldn't be happier.

My review compared to the gs3

Just a few comparisons of the dna vs gs3 since I have both.
Screen...Dna not as colorful, but probably more realistic. It also has crisper text. I thought it would be a drastic difference, but to my disapointment its not.
Camera...Outdoors both are comparable, cant tell the difference. Indoors is another story. DNA is not very good. Another disapointment.
Build quality...While I have no complaints against the GS3, the DNA is much better.
Signal....DNA is better.
Battery...DNA is about the same as GS3.
UI...Im suprised here, but I like TW better.
So, both are great phones, but im not sure if I will keep the DNA.If you have the gs3...I dont think its an upgrade. Im thinking of exchanging it for the Note 2.
I'm in the same boat. I had the S3 and gave it to the Spouse to get this.....but I'm not impressed with the camera. I use my camera daily as a P&S so I don't have to take a dedicated camera with me....so yeah-I buy Smartphones with the camera in mind. The pics from my S3 just seemed sharper and had better color reproduction. The only thing I can honestly say about the DNA....the build quality rocks on this thing and the screen is beautiful. I'm going to "try" and love this thing, but if I can't get over my hangups with it, I'm returning it, the wireless charging pad, and getting the Note2 on the 29th, which falls well within the 14 day exchange window. It's just personal preference....what works for you, may not work for me, and vice-versa.
I also like the DNA, but I really don't want to go back to Sense and the phone is a bit too big for my taste.
Thinking of checking out the GN2 when it comes out (I know it's even bigger) and getting it or the Razr HD. I don't use the camera much, so not too worried about it on the Razr.
Also, the specs on the HD are weak, but I am not sure how much that matters on terms of actual performance.
