My computer is having a problem recognizing my HTC Vivid as anything besides an Unknown USB Device. Sometimes it will come up as an Android Phone and list the normal drivers but that goes away and turns into an Unknown USB Device with no drivers in about 10 seconds. I've tried mounting it to Disk Drive, HTC Sync, Internet Pass-Through, and Sync Manager. Not sure what to do at this point, I want to update my phone.

I'm having the same issue as you, just started tonight (trying to put the 1/15/2014 build of CM 11 on it), and so far haven't come across anything useful yet. I do recommend going to the HTC vivid forums and asking for help there, as you're more likely to get a response.

windows 7 with Samsung 64 bit drivers installed
back to stock DL01 and then OTA DL09 about five times today.
Here is the problem, when i mount my phone, intermittantly Windows 7 doesnt give me the pop up window that lets me view my sd card files. It gives me a pop up window with 2 choices:
Option # 1. View your files - this really doesnt let me view anything except 4 files one of them being a " Bootloader file "
Option # 2. Install Bootstrap Loader exe.
I have had my phone since september and rooted, rom"ed OTA"ed all of it and today this started happening.
When i look in Drives and Printers my phone is listed as a CD Drive and not a Mass Storage Drive.
Just curious if any one else has had this issue and what might have caused it to start happening.
I installed Samsung Kies earlier this afternoon but uninstalled it since it was pretty much worthless to fascinate owners and the U.S. isnt supported.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced for any info.
have you tried re downloading the drivers from samsung.com? it worked for me.
This has been talked about in several places already. It is a common bug with DL09. The best solution is to flash one of adrynalyne's 1/18 test kernels found here. I hope this helps!
BTW: make sure it is one of the kernels with the cd fix

I did some playing around and the following seemed to let me 'mount'
the phones as before. ( But I dont like it. )
Hoping for some direction from Verizon tech on
a) what is media sync ?
b) how do I turn off permanently If I dont need or want to use it?
Unplug phone from usb cable.
Then on Phone... Menu...Settings..USB settings
Change to ' Ask on connection'.
then press home button.
Plug in USB cable.
When prompted...Press 'Mass storage'.
Now wait...wait..wait. Took about 30 to 45 seconds.
Annunciator bar should have usb symbol. Drag it open.
Press usb connected....Press Mount..
My laptop now recognized the SD card on E drive.
Copy files as usual.
When done...Open Anunciator bar and 'Turn Off' USB storage.
Media Sync is a mode that allows programs such as Windows Media Player and Rhapsody to access your SD card and copy over DRM protected music.

not sure if it helps with the problems with 2.2 but whenever i had this issue on 2.1 this is what i did, turn off your phone with the usb cable in and turn it back on with the phone still plugged in. It always seemed to work for me
From your homescreen when you hit menu go to usb settings then make sure the little radio button for mass storage device is selected. That was my problem after the latest OTA from verizon. Also it takes like 15 seconds for it to all sync up.
i have searched these forums hi and low, googled, etc. still cant find an answer....
on djo5,dl09 i was able to plug my phone into the usb port in my car, then mount my sd card, and it would automatically connect and find my music and start playing it.
on either dl30, or eb01, i cannot get it to work.
it is very frustrating. everytime i try, (all different combinations debugging on/off mass storage/ ask on connect, etc.)
i get a "device connect failed" message.
does anyone else have this issue?
has anyone been able to get this to work?
Another fix when it shows up as a CD-ROM drive is to right click and eject. Seems to work every time for me.

Just installed Superclean 2.6 and had issues. I tried ejecting the CD Rom device in Windows, but that didn't work. I changed the usb settings from Mass Storage to Ask On Connection and then tried it again. This time I received the Android guy asking to mount the drive. Yay! It worked! It does however show both a CD rom drive and the mass storage drive in Windows XP.
On another note, I found that if I plug in my phone without unlocking the password first it locks up the phone until I unplug the usb cable attached to the pc.
Make sure you are using a USB cable that has a good connection (like the original one). I bought some aftermarket cables, and while they are good enough for charging, I really think they fit too loose to keep a secure connection.

Thanks guys, this combination worked perfectly for me.
Just fyi, this is due to Verizon bloatware that has been inserted I to the kernel. Adrynalyne and company managed to flush it out of the Eclair kernel, but since we don't have kernel source code for the Froyo kernel yet, there's nothing that can be done at this time. When source is available, this will be fixed by our devs.

Are you getting "usb device not recognized" from your computer?
You've installed the samsung drivers?
Was it working at a given point in time and now it doesn't work all of a sudden?
I had a similar issue this week where i got "usb device not recognized" from my computer everytime i plugged in the device. I thought i had not installed the samsung mobile drivers properly, or my usb drivers on my PC was messed up, etc etc.
It turned out that my USB charging cable was the issue. It charged my phone fine but did not let me connect it to Odin or even transfer files.
So my suggestion is to try to find someone else's cable and give it a shot.
I used an AT&T captivate cable from a coworker and that's how i found out it was my cable.

from desktop, windows button, in search box just above button type device manager, should be at the top of the windows pop up, clock that, go down to usb controllers, click the plus sign box. the rest was explained above.
USB fix
So I had the same problem. A new oem cable solved it. don't fight too long with this problem just get a new cable.
Today I deleted some programs off my SGS2 that were in the list in the SGS2 General Forum. My phone was able to connect to the PC before that. After I uninstalled the applications on my phone, it no longer tries to talk to my computer. I have reinstalled the drivers, restarted both my computer and phone, and still nothing. I am worried it was something I uninstalled but I doubt it. I was quite careful removing the programs using Titanium Backup and they were completely unrelated in my opinion. I have a feeling it is only coincidental.
Anyhow can you please help me troubleshoot what has happened? Thanks.
Perhaps it wasn't related. I figured out how to do it with USB debugging ticked. I never had to do that before. Originally it would connect automatically with USB debugging unticked. Now it only connects with USB debugging ticked and after I say that it is 'OK' pretty much.
Still, if anyone can shed some light on what I may have uninstalled let me know. Thanks.
may not apply to you since im guessing you tried it both times on the same comp with the same OS. i find that kies hates 64 bit OS. it just wouldn't connect on my desktop running win 7 ultimate 64bit but connects just fine on my laptop running win 7 enterprise 32bit. anyway... i usually have debugging mode on anyway, much easier for me to access the phone and sd card using explorer instead of stupid kies. kies i only use for firmware updates or atleast until i've rooted this thing.
Sorry I should have mentioned that I am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Thanks, shabs52. Good to know it could be my OS that is fumbling. I would have to agree as well, Kies stinks. I can't wait until I can get a stock OS without any crapware.
Anyhow it is strange how it worked for awhile and just stopped, but debug mode is better anyway.

Wiped drive brand new Win 7 x64 install Kies no problems = bad driver install or conflicts on original setup .

I'm having this problem too
Despite my Win7 64bits, Kies always connected automatically, both with SGS2 and my previous SGS. Yesterday my SGS2 started to behave strange: when I plug the USB cable it doesn't recognizes automatically (takes a few seconds), and only starts charging the battery, but the data link is not stablished (Kies won't even recognize there is a device connected). When I remove the USB cable the charging indicator continues to show as if it still was connected (again, for a few seconds). The same with the power cord. Since the symptoms were the same in my notebook (also Win 7 64) I tried it on a Win XP 32 - same thing (different USB cables). This makes me think the problem is with the device itself. Anyone have seen this?
Try deleting the drivers on your pc for samsung usb while the phone is unplugged. Then plug back the phone and windows 7 should automatically search and install the required files...worked for me with w7 64
I already did that, but the problem persists. Today some new symptoms "arrived", which led me to this other thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1151863). The phone eventually enters car mode, or beeps and shows the charging indicator (even though it's not plugged). Weird. Will take to service tomorrow.
Im having this same problem with my epic touch. Was just wondering if anyone found a way to fix it.
I have an HTC ONE X+ and it will not connect to the computer nothing happens, it will only charge.
I have tried to connect it with and without debugging on. I have tried connecting it after uninstalling sync manager and even reinstalling sync manager to the latest version and it still will not connect, I get no acknowledgement from the PC or PHONE (except for the phone charging). I have connected it to 2 other computers and still no response, I have tried another USB cord and still nothing. I did connect my other HOX and it connects just fine but my HOX+ will not.
Any suggestions/solutions?

Install this drivers from Hasoon's Toolkit Thread and try it again.
You may also want to uninstall the HOX drivers as they maybe causing a conflct and remember to have the screen unlocked while connecting (helps my device, no idea why).

I figured out the "port" on my was bad. Got a replacement phone under warranty and all is good.
I just got the G3 last weekend and I'm really frustrated trying to connect it to my Win7 laptop. The phone charges but I don't get any sort of popup to mount the SD card so I can transfer files back and forth.
I have MTP enabled and I even went to the Windows website and installed the MTP drivers but I still can't get my computer to recognize it. Google searches have turned up nothing helpful. What am I missing?
EDIT: Never mind. I figured it out. Apparently my phone prefers one USB port over another.
