I just got my Droid RAZR 2 days ago. For some reason, the 4G LTE randomly drops out. Sometimes, it won't even come back on at all and I have to reboot the phone to get my connection back. I have service because I still get text messages and phone calls. This is getting really annoying, especially when I'm out and about and away from my home Wi-Fi.
I have already downloaded and installed the connectivity restore app from Verizon's Play Store page, but it didn't help. Any other suggestions?

I just had this exact same thing happen to me. I'm in Anaheim, CA. Figured it was a network outage, of course Verizon always denies any outages just like Sprint did for 3 years.
Eventually, after about 1 hour, 5 reboots and that connectivity app, it just came back on.
Who knows..
Idowhatiwant...i know how it is. Im in the same area. But this has been goibg on for a least a month now.

Yep, appears so. Back to 3G now lol..
Got my Maxx about a week ago. I also have a similar (or maybe the same) situation where the 4G LTE icon turns white, but there is no data connection (WiFi off). I did some searching online and found that apparently a lot of Verizon LTE phones have the same problem, so I don't know whether this is a software or hardware problem. However, I did see that many people got their phone to get the connection back with a CDMA/LTE toggle on/off (found in Settings). Hopefully Verizon is working on an update for this.
I think, from what I've observed, it has trouble switching from 3G to 4G and vice-versa. At home, I'm right on the edge of a 4G area, so my phone constantly switches back and forth between 3G and 4G. That's when the data drops. When I have solid 4G connection, the data doesn't drop.

Welcome to Verizon LTE.
It's a problem with the handshake protocol from eHRPD to LTE. Not likely to be fixed entirely until Verizon rolls out an LTE-Advanced network and phases out CDMA altogether.

It's not all bad news. The newer phones timeout much less when trying to hold connection and authenticate faster than the first-gens (Charge, Tbolt, etc), and even better than they did at launch (in the case of the Bionic, for example, which uses the same Moto Wrigley 4G chip as the Razr and others). It'll only get better with successive releases.
Just something I've noticed and if anyone has some insight I'd appreciate it. I have the evo 3d on sprint, my fiancé has the droid bionic on Verizon. Sprint just works, but on the bionic, and lg revolution before that, wouldn't get data connection or calling/texting if the bars and data indicators in the notification bar were lit up blue. If they're white, she gets nothing. Why? It's like there's service available but the phone won't connect to it at times. This happened to the revolution too so I'm under the impression its Verizon of the way they do things.
And to clarify, the number of bars will still fluctuate like ours, not that some are blue and some are white. Same goes for the data connection, it'll list 3g, 4g, or not be present depending on what's available. But no matter what's showing, if it's white, you might as well be in airplane mode.
I asked in the bionic forum too but no one shared any info yet.

I'm assuming you won't get many responses here, since this isn't a Verizon forum. But I have experience with the Bionic actually. Two of my friends have the Bionic, and have the same issues you do. I recently took an 8 hour trip with two friends that have the Bionic, and one friend with another phone on Verizon (a new samsung I think). I of course, being a Sprint customer, literally had no data/cell coverage about 80% of the trip. The one with the brand new Verizon phone had 4g about 75% of the time, and 3g the other 25%. She was streaming pandora and had Navigation going the whole time, without a SINGLE hiccup or buffering in the music. The two with the Bionic always had cell coverage, but their 4g was VERY spotty, and only worked about 40% of the time.
Also at my house, the person with the samsung always has 4g and never had a problem with data connectivity. The two with the Bionics very frequently experience 4g dropouts, and the handoffs between 4g and 3g normally cause streaming audio/video to cut out.
So based on my experience, the Bionic is just a bad phone all together.
Thanks. I did get a response this morning in the other forum. They're saying it's having trouble connecting to Google services. But that doesn't make sense why nothing works...

I was wondering if anyone can confirm if there is a way to disable LTE? I just came from the OG Razr and I was able to use the app "Phone Info" to toggle the LTE and CDMA radios. Is this app specific to Moto devices and will it work with the Samsung Radio? Or is there a better way to turn off LTE?
I'm in a non LTE area at work and want a way to keep it from searching for LTE and draining my battery. Thanks!
Edit: I guess my question is, can someone in a LTE area confirm that it is in fact working? Not being in a LTE area, I do not know how to confirm that the radio is being shut off. Thanks!

It should work...I know it didnt play nice on some of the gs3 roms. Try it and report back.
I'm in LTE coverage and I've disabled LTE with the Phone Info app. Worked like a charm.
Yep, use the Phone Info app from the Play Store. Once installed, open it up and select "Device information." Scroll down a bit to a the box labeled "Set preferred network type." In the box, select CDMA auto (PRL). That will turn off the LTE radio.
Each time you reboot your phone, it will reset, so you'll have to go back into the app to change things.

I did this and now my phone will not change back to use 4g, I have tried setting it to Global (that's what it was first) to LTE/CDMA and to LTE only. Anyone know a fix. doesn't matter if you uninstall the app and reboot or even just reboot with the app installed, mine stays stuck.

I can change back and forth without any problems. After changing back, it sometimes takes a little bit for the 4G to pick back up. Are you trying to change it back in the phone's settings or through the Phone Info app?
You really dont need phone info. This phone you can change between lte and cdma. Go to settings *more settings and then mobile network. You can change between both there. If I remember correctly you can even put it in global.

Same problem. I turn off 4G with the Phone Info app but the only way to turn it back on is in Android Settings and not the phone info app.

Not true anymore. You can't switch it CDMA in the phone's stock settings . Verizon stopped having this option in the settings for any LTE device around the time that the ICS update went out for the RAZR and RAZR MAXX in the spring. It's not in the settings for the Galaxy S3, the DNA, or the Note 2. Verizon wants to move people off the 3G network and onto the 4G network. The only options in the stock settings for the Note 2 are Global, LTE/CDMA, and GSM/UMTS.
Since it can't be changed in the stock settings, that's why people are asking how to put the phone into 3G-only mode. There's a menu that can be accessed through the dialer, but an app like Phone Info makes things a little easier.
Yea, this option works great. I know each one is different, but with mine I had to go into the settings to get it to move back to LTE. Now that I am sure I can get LTE back then I will have qualms about using this. Thanks to the OP for this. Great IDEA!
I've always had luck setting it to "3G Only" in Phone Info, but have found you have to switch back to LTE in the actual Phone Menu.
I'm just disappointed this phone won't do "LTE Only". Was really hoping it would.

If you put the phone into LTE-only mode, you wouldn't be able to make or receive phone calls and texts. You'd only have data (and only when in LTE areas).

Not true. The Phone Info app changes the entire network connection, not just data. Going into LTE only disables the CDMA radio, which is used for both voice and 3G data. It doesn't separate the two. This is well documented across forums online from people who have tried it. I've also previously tried it on other devices.
On the Note 2, if you select LTE only in the Phone Info app, it doesn't seem to actually put the phone into LTE only mode. If you exit the app and then open it back up, you'll see that it's reverted back to the previous mode (either Global or LTE/CDMA/EvDo). So that would explain still being able to make/receive calls and texts if you tried going into LTE only mode on the Note 2.
But if the phone was truly in LTE only mode, you couldn't make/receive calls or texts.

On this phone you can't choose 3G only by default without an app or other manual commands. Options are for GSM/UMTS, LTE/CDMA, and Global.
Doesn't seem to be turning off the LTE radio
Nonrooted, completely stock.
So, I got phone info, and chose cdma (PRL) only as discussed above.
And, I'm seeing NO improvement in battery life.
Measured anecdotally, over the last several days and from battery monitor widget.
I'm always at approximately 40% by 6pm (after unplugging at 650am) with average usage.
Isn't LTE a power hog? If it's disabled, shouldn't we see a measurable difference in battery life?
Any input greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
F
It does seem to be good at lowering the quality of netflix though so as to save me from running over my data limits.

The LTE versions of the Note 2 are getting battery life that's on par with the international 3G-only version, even when LTE is in use. So I'm not surprised that you're not finding there to really be a difference. Significant strides have been made over the past year that have made LTE much more energy efficient than it has a reputation for being.
The only time that I'd really think anyone would see a major difference is if you're in a fringe LTE area where the phone is constantly jumping back and forth between LTE and 3G. In a situation like that, disabling LTE will probably lead to a noticeable increase in battery life. Outside of that, the battery drain will probably be pretty similar.
Interesting - thanks for the info!
Seems counterintuitive that turning off a radio and denergizing it would seem to have almost nill effect over several hours - especially in light of the article the other day about how VoLTE was such a huge drain (approx 140%) of regular CDMA voice traffic - due to the peculiar nature of CDMA+LTE with simultaneous voice and lte data.
Odd, another data point, on mine, disabling wifi as well seems to have no substantial affect either.
Maybe this is due to the Qualcomm ?gobi? chip? Supposed to be pretty badass iirc.
Hate to necro-bump this thread, but is there a way to do this still? For whatever reason, LTE at my desk at work gets almost zero data while 3g works fine (albeit a little slow). The app mentioned previously doesn't seem to have any way to change settings.

Hey guys I have a question. I live in a area where there is FAIR 4g coverage. Mostly 3G coverage. Hardly a place I cant get any cell service. Now my Verizon S4 a lot of the time will want to switch over to 1X speeds... very annoying. I dont believe its a phone or ROM issue cause I have had the Droid Charge and the Galaxy SIII and they both done it. Now my question is.. on the S4 is there any way to permantly disable the 1X only? basically I want 3G or 4G only and if i cant get either of those I would rather have no service. 1X seems to make my phones freak out about internet stuff. Like sometimes IMs wont come through and the phone constanty retrys sending the IM... ect.. wasting battery. Anyway to just turn that off? Thanks!

When I'm on calls it does not allow me to use my data on my wifi at all. I have always been able to

I've tried using it with the mobile data turned off or on in settings.
Even though it shows wifi connectivity on status bar it still doesn't allow
for a page to load, speedtest to be done, zello to stay logged in, etc.
no one experiencing my duplex wifi while in call not working issue?
Is no one else having this problem ? I'm about to do a flash back to the stock ROM to see if wifi works simultaneously while in a call but if it's a fault in the programming / chipset then there's no point in me trying. Someone please reply so I don't waste my time doing something that someone else has tried.
Well I am on Verizon but sometimes my data works and sometimes it doesn't during a call. WiFi will stay connected and work fine.

Sometimes the wifi doesn't work at all on the phone even if I'm not on a call, but the S2 I have works like a charm with the same cradle point mbr1200/verizon data card that I've had for years. within 5 feet from the router too...
stock. non rooted, on sprint.
i was on the phone with my mom on moms day and was on wifi here at the house.
i was successfully able to use google voice to send and receive texts and also was surfing the web for a phone for my mom, so i have had good results with wifi calling.

I'm having issues with data also. I have the Verizon onemax. I started having this problem about 3 days ago. I have issues staying connected to 4g never used to have this problem. I live in a 4g area, when I turn off my device and wait about 10 secs then turn it back on then I get 4g for a brief period then it goes right back to 3g. Also I can't get any data when I make a phone call, that never ever happened before, I don't know why this is happining. I called Verizon and the rep told me to turn off my device then turn it back on the rep said that resets the "PRL" I TRIED THAT like I said awhile ago it worked....but only for a brief period. The Verizon rep "tech support" told me if that diddnt work that I may need to get a new SIM "which is on the way". This problem has happened on NuSense and on ViperRom, I wiped cach/dalvik/data&system and I'm still having this issue, I'm hopping the new SIM will fix this issue. Maybe we can get some help. I have diagnosed my problem on simultaneous calling with data connection non existence even with wifi symbol on status bar...
The data on wifi works on calls if I'm not using a bluetooth device, meaning if I'm using the handset or the speaker phone it works fine, even if the headset stays connected to the phone, wifi still works as long as I'm not using the bluetooth for my call... kinda defeats purpose of having a smartphone if you can't use all features... backward thinking htc.

That sounds like a load of crap on the PRL note, which stands for preferred roaming list, aka while off verizon towers... network / data provisioning should fix the problem... which on sprint's is a quick ##72786# to get network provisioning to reset itself... Been doing that alot lately with the towers here getting the upgrade bugs. Had a nexus 5 phone in a power cycle loop when LTE was turned on in specific areas, had to put it in airplane mode quickly before it powered down, change settings to cdma, leaving it like that til the area was fixed. Only phone that had that problem that I know of. My HTC One Max kept losing tower connection randomly and I still have issues where certain towers won't put the call through to my phone. Which I've heard is an "on going" issue from sprint in certain "markets" LoL... (My guess is any of the newly upgraded towers with spark)
