S2's partitions? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I have a friend with a S2 and while looking thru the space he has and were apps are installed I see that there are sort of 2 partitions and one of them is set as a SD card! (There is no SD card inserted)
How does this work? And why does it suppose that one of the partitions is the SD card? When I try to move apps to the SD card, I cant because I think Android thinks it needs to copy to /sdcard but obviously there is no SD card inserted.
Thank you

This thread has a lot of good info re: partitions.

SD Card help?

Sorry I know this is a stupid question but I searched and couldn't find it. All my stuff automatically downloads to my MOGUL itself and it never asks me if I want to save to my SD card.....so how do I do that? Then if I go to memory>storage card> it says Total Storage Card Memory: Not Installed.......? Thanks
are u sure u have an sd card and if u do how much gigs
Either your SD card is not formatted or it is not seated properly and not recognized by the device...
Try removing and reinserting the card.
If that doesn't solve it try reformating the card. I use Fat32 simply for the ease of being able to stick it into any computer when I need to. (I have an 8 Gig so I have a folder with some often used files and Vista and XP drivers for the phone in case I need to sync with a new computer.

Mine didn't come with one. Once again, are you sure there's an SD card in the device? Have you physically removed it to verify?

I am pretty sure it is recognizing it now but I haven't had the chance to try to download any programs yet so I dont know if there will be an option to out it onto the SD card or not........will it ask me or do I have to move it to the storage card after I download it? Thanks
nvm, I got it figured out.

i cant see my sd card from the phone itself, i can plug it to the computer and use is, copy stuff in it but ween i try to see it from the phone, nothing
like he cant see that there is a sd card.
is there is a way to fix this?
please help
and thanks from advance for any answer
Do you mean external Sd card? It's accessible through /mnt/emmc.
Sent from samsung vibrant
yes i mean external Sd card
and sorry for my ignorant but what is accessible through /mnt/emmc
if you can explain in a simple way i will be most grateful
I don't know what file manager are you using but when you open a file manager, you usually are seeing your internal card directories...go up one level and you will see emmc directory. emmc is your external card.
yes man !
you a genius !!
thank you man, the second i looked in the emmc i found it !
thanks man for the help and the quick respond

Why do you want to re-name the SD card?
Unmount and remount the SD card, perhaps? Or format via recovery, if rooted?
Is it SDXC or SDHC?
SDXC might cause problems sometimes - exFAT, FAT32 and all that jazz.

I think you need to read this from Chainfire: www.chainfire.eu/articles/113/Is_Google_blocking_apps_writing_to_SD_cards_/

How did you format the card? It is a known issue that ExFat Formatting on 64G cards will NOT work on the SGSIII and you have to format your card as Fat32.
Try and format the card on your computer as Fat32 and it should work.
It's because the 64gb sandisk is formatted by default as exFat, which is not supported by CWM
The only solution to this is to remformat the card, probably at fat32 as this is the most widely used but BACKUP ALL YOUR DATA FROM extSD FIRST!! as reformatting will wipe the card
Then CWM will recognise this as normal
Mind you fat32 does have its disadvantages, mainly that you won't be able t have a single file bigger then 4gb on it
eh more than 4gb? then whats point of having 64gb SDcard?
i didnt know that was issue with the s3 will there be exFat support in CWM? its really frustrating
Thanks for replies
It's not an issue with the S3 I believe, it's just CWM -no idea if it will be updated to support it though :S
The 4gb thing only means that any one file cannot be bigger then 4gb e.g. you couldn't have a movie file that is 4.5gb in size.
Really it's no problem to have it as fat32 unless you have seriously big files

It is unknown at this time if ExFat will be properly supported but I would assume that at some point it may be. Also, just in case you dont already know, The SGSIII is NOT capable of moving apps to the ExtSD card natively either so if that is one of the reasons you bought such a big card, I hate to "bring you down".
There are some methods to switch your internal and external SD cards to assist in this issue but you will have to search and read the threads to find out the methods.
Just so you know...
yeah i know that i just backup using appcontrol and then move them to exSD
thats quite helpful i didnt know all this else i'd have not given up my 32gb card its quite lame TBH!

[Q] 64gb micro SD card question please

Hi, happy Saturday everyone!
I am a new proud owner of the S3 and have a simple question...I have a sandisk 64gb micro sd card xc that I used on my battery hog Evo that has a ton of songs...what can I do to use this on my new baby s3? do I have to reformat it? transfer my songs to my external hard drive or, what is the proper procedure? Do I need to reformat the card itself? I appreciate all you experienced users advice,
Thank you:laugh:
What format is the card now? normally you simply place the card into the phone and it should work but if its the wrong format it may need to be reset by the phone or formatted to fat32 by a computer

It should still work, but on the s3, you want it in exfat anyways. You can do that via your computer or just format it in your s3, i believe

BinaryEclipse, thank you, ill try it....
Don't format it in your phone before backing up your sd card first or you will lose everything.
