[Q] restore my backup (Not what you think) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i was trying to install this ROM, but it didn't work. And i accidentally wiped out my whole system and the only thing my s3 GT-i9300 can do are CWM and download mode. It got the backup on my Mac but how am I suppose to upload my backup to my phone? My Android File Transfer won't work so what should i do now??? (I am starting to get worried) It just stucked in the samsung screen
Sorry my English is not really good not so forgive me.

Upload the backup on an SD card with another device (card reader/other phone etc) and then place the card on your phone and install ZIP package from external SD. Hope this helped.
*edit* also why would you install a GT-I9505 rom on a s3 ?!??!?!

I have no clue. Probably a bad backup file. I guess you can try a couple more times (wipe cache etc every time) if it fails just install a new rom from xda dev forums (this time made for your s3!) to get your phone running.

Full wipe for flashing new rom

When changing to new ROMs, some require a 'full wipe'. What I'm wondering is when you do a full wipe in CWM, does it also wipe the external SD card? I'm never really sure if it will or not so I always take it out prior just to be safe. If I don't need to do that though that would be good
No unless you select wipe external sd card if the option is on CWM .

What is your Rom you used after you did the full wipe?
It requires time for the media scanner to scan all of your files on your external SD. It took me one time about 5 - 10 minutes until I saw my files on the file manager.

Hi
Let me be mo clear:
I used Super Wipe Full to erase everything because I was facing some problems on it.
I used a lot of rooms before.
Now I can just access CWM and when I try to install the room, it says: "no files found". I think is isnt reading the external sd.

[Q] Flash a custom ROM without SD Card ?

Hi, I was wondering if I can flash a custom ROM into my Galaxy S2 but without SD card
it's already rooted but the problem is that in every tutorial I read here I find that I must copy the zip file of the custom ROM to the SD Card
So if there's anyway to flash this custom ROM without the SD card it would be great
Thanks.
Any tutorial you're following is probably using sdcard to mean internal storage. There's no requirement for a physical, external micro sd card.
So if I followed the tutorial and copied the zip file to the internal storage will it be okay or what ? (excuse me but I'm new to this and kinda lost)
You can link a tutorial to be sure, but unless you're formatting the internal storage (/sdcard), there's no reason it won't work. I've not seen a tutorial requiring the format of /sdcard.
yes, it will work fine.
read and reread the instructions until you are comfortable with them.

should not be a problem, just boot into standard recovery mode and flash the zip from your internal memory
As said CWM installs from SD card internal not external add on sd card .

Download your MIUI rom from the official english website
http://miuiandroid.com/
Connect your phone to PC and copy the zip file to your phone ( since you don't have an SD card you can't copy anywhere else anyway ).
Reboot to ClockworkMod Recovery and do a wipe data, wipe cache.
Go to advanced , wipe Dalvik cache , wipe battery stats.
Go back and choose install from zip from sd card , then choose "choose zip from sd card" , select your zip , confirm it once more and you're done. After its finished select reboot.
Okay thanks guys you're all awesome, I did it and its intalled just fine

Apps you can only restore if you backed them up with titanium backup before flashing. Contacts, well... You should have those on your SIM card, or Google account if you used sync.

[Q] 3 problems with applications

Hi,
I have 3 problems related to applications for which I can't find solution.
1st is that after removing/uninstalling applications and then restarting phone at some point for whatever reason there are visible remnants of them. (screenshot attached)
I am able to uninstall them again, but after another restart they are back. So how to get rid of them for good?
2nd problem is that certain applications seems to uninstall/delete themselves upon phone reboot. It seems its related to SD card where they put themselves during install. I have tried to move majority of apps back to phone, but seems only some of them are affected by this. There are apps which are installed/moved to SD and they work fine even after restart, so don't know. Maybe some of them are not working after moving to SD? Although for some its strange because they install itself to SD without me moving them.
3rd problem appeared today. Yesterday I have updated to ICS via Kies and installed 5 updates from Market. Today after restart the same apps were back to previous versions and Market offered me the same updates for the same apps. Whats the problem with this?
Thx for your help
Reads as possible corruption of SD card .

I THINK what he's suggesting is that when you have apps installed to your sd card, then an update occurs, then if there are differences in how partitioning works between your old OS version and your new OS version, you may lose some apps.

Then there's a bunch of unintelligible gibberish... Seems to be suggesting that restoring apps using Titanium backup can cause issues, and suggests formatting the external SD card on your PC instead of in your phone.

Back up your /efs folder before you do anything. (which I agree with wholeheartedly)
I think I translated that correctly.
Thanks for your translation mate although I am not sure if he said anything what can help me except deleting and formatting all which is really something what I would like to avoid for now.
LOST.DIR is empty on both internal and external SD card.
Also the problem with remnants was happening before I upgraded to ICS, do I don't think its related to partitioning at all.

Last time I had this issue, it was on my Moto Milestone where I had app2sd running, and my SD card was becoming corrupted. I had to format my SD card and re-install the affected apps.
Hmm, I am not using any external app like app2sd, just the option which is offering Android itself. You were formatting internal or external one?

I was describing my condition on one of my old phones. (An old Motorola Milestone, which did not have an internal SD) Not an I9100.
If you are using the default app2sd in Android, then you'll want to format internal. But back up all your files (music, pictures, whatever else) before you do, obviously.
I see. Yeah I was planning to do backup of course, but if I copy back all after format won't be back also the problem?
Lost dir from me was to check for corruption as thats where corrupt sd card files go.

It shouldn't matter...
But my advice is to go through your installed apps and make a list of all apps that are marked as installed to your SD. Then uninstall all of the ones that are. Then back up your internal SD, and do your format of internal SD.
DO NOT copy back the .android_secure folder after you format. This is the folder that Android uses for it's built-in app2sd. (so it will get created again automatically later)
That means you'll have to re-install all of the apps you made a list of above, but it SHOULD help alleviate your problem.

The condition he describes is that the app is no longer being registered as installed. So I don't think he'll be able to do this.
Thanks mate, I am now making backup of internal SD card before formatting although there is no .android_secure folder. There is one on external SD card, but its empty. Anyway will try the format after all the data are copied.
So backup done, formatted card, copied all back, restarted phone and the remnants are still there

Hmm.. you may not have a choice but to do a factory reset/full wipe to get rid of 'em. Sorry dude.
Thats not what I wanted to hear. Should I go for factory reset available directly from Android or should I boot to recovery and go with factory reset/wipe data or wipe cache?

Either one should be fine.
FYI, you can back up most stuff you have and restore using various methods, so you can get back to your current state... it will just take a bit of effort.
And which would you recommend? I have Titanium Backup Pro to use or is there easier way?

Photos deleted after flashing stock ROM via Odin

Hi,
I'm new and though I've watched the noob video I hope I'm in the right place, if not please dont get angry ><.
2 days ago I've flashed into stock rom for my SG3 (GT-i9300) back from my RGUI v5 Build number: MIUI-2.8.3 IMM76D / Kernal version: 3.0.38-Siyah-s3-v1.3.9c
Ask me why? because I've had some issues trying to install official MIUI v4 from the international website and always I get error: "Status 7" with a dead android inside. (Again, Why ? because I as hoping it would make my SG3 even smoother... more responsive)
So I though perhaps flashing it from a stock rom might work, so I used Odin and everything went fine, again ofcourse I got the error and went back to CWM to restore the backup i've made before flashing anything, I dont really mind about the error right now, I've seen similar posts about it and I shall continue investigating it, What's more important is on the next phrase.
Today I found out that all my photos were deleted, after restoring my RGUI v5 rom 2 days ago ofcourse....
I'm not sure how could the situation get any better though I remember previously flashing rom's that the SD card never being touched and I guess I was wrong.
What I wanted to ask is, I just got more CWM backup files on my external SD, does anyone knows if CWM backup restores user data aswell or should I just give up ?
Helpfull tips of how to restore it could be usefull (Oh lord, please spare me I beg you, I'll pray more).
Thanks in advance.
I've flashed hundreds of times on S1, S2 and now S3 and never lost any data or photos that are on either the internal or external sd cards.
Not sure but could it be that you somehow hit format sd card in cwm by accident?

Have you searched your internal and external storage? Maybe they were only stored on a different location so that the stock Gallery cannot find them?
Storages are either completely wiped or not wiped - but you don't only loose one particular folder

Sorry, but this is a "Well Duh..." moment.... Flashing any stock rom through ODIN will always wipe the data partition on the internal sd card. You need to backup the internal stuff onto your PC. Only a stock firmware that has been modded will allow a non-wipe flash and you usually need to be rooted as it is no longer a stock rom.
You should be able to restore a nandroid backup of a stock rom too without wiping the internal sd card as this is only putting the system data back onto your phone...
