[Q] Possible stupid question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I just noticed today (been very busy with work) that there are some ME7 roms. I wanted to try the, is it Bone Stock one. So my stupid question, is if I try this rom.. I am not stuck to that am I? Like if I took the OTA I am stuck with that... that isnt the case with one of the ME7 roms, correct?
Sorry for the ignorance.

If you took the ota ME7 update, you can root, but cannot flash any roms as there is no custom recovery available. If your still on MDK, you can root and install custom recovery which will allow you to flash roms, even ME7 roms.

Yes. I understand that.
My question was, if I try one of the ME7 roms, I still have an unlocked bootloader, correct?

You won't be disappointed if you're looking for a stable ROM and good battery life. Not that I have anything bad to say about the others. All the active choices seem good.

S4 has never had an unlocked bootloader, it uses the Loki exploit which enables you to basically do everything you could do with an unlocked boot loader. I think all this bootloader talk has many misinformed. I could care less about an unlocked bootloader, I would like an exploit like Loki again if possible.
But to answer your question, you will still have the Loki exploit.

[Q] How to tell if bootloader unlocked

I'm still on MDK, rooted and installed TWRP through Goo manager; however, i never read anything about unlocking bootloader. I know when I had the S3, I had to root separately and unlock the bootloader separately. Is there a way to tell if my bootloader is unlocked?

You don't actually unlock the bootloader on the S4. You exploited a security hole in the bootloader to allow you to install TWRP. Root and a custom recovery is as unlocked as you get on this.

oh ok.. I never really understood the s4 was are able to install custom roms if the bootloader wasn't unlocked. I didn't unlock my bootloader on my S3 and flashed a custom ROM which gave me the infamous yellow triangle. I wanted to make sure if there was something else I needed to do before I flash custom roms on the S4.

If I was you, id install twrp 2.5.0.2 instead of 2.6.0.0 because the newest twrp is unstable at best. I made a zip for 2.5.0.2 today because I was tired of seeing people asking for support from 2.6.0.0

How about an ODIN version for those Dev Ed users?
Just thought I ask.

I'm using TWRP 2.5.0.3 but I do get some occasional splash screen freezes.

IMO its easier to make an odin flashable recovery than a flashable zip

If I'm on MDK with a custom recovery installed, would I never need to update my phone

Say I'm running MDK 4.2.2, I have a custom recovery installed, and then 4.3 comes out. Could I just wait for a dev to release their own flashable version of TouchWiz 4.3 with the unlocked bootloader and MDK baseband? Or would it not be the same as updating to 4.3 OTA (so, would the update not be as "good")? Sorry if this is a really noob question. Thanks!

Never take an update from Samsung/Verizon. At least as long as we have developer support just wait for a flashable ROM to be released.
BTW - the baseband is not relevant on this issue. You can flash a new radio if you choose. I've seen no reason to but many have.

Safestrap vs cracked bootloader

I've got a question. What's the difference between a cracked bootloader and safestrap? I know this is a noob question, but I can't find anything on the Web about this.

Safestrap allows those with a locked boot loader such as me7 or mi1 to flash custom touchwiz Roms based on that firmware. There is at this time no way to flash a custom kernel which means they cannot run aosp roms. This phone doesn't have a cracked boot loader but mdk users have the Loki exploit which allows a custom recovery to be loaded, only those users can flash any custom ROM for the phone, because you can flash a custom kernel. But its not truly unlocked. Safestrap does allow yto have ROM slots so you can have a couple of Roms ready to go at all times.you just decide which you will boot to when the phone comes on.

do you have anymore info on this? and why it would be beneficial? i want to run a different ROM but dont want a dual ROM like what safestrap requires...Does MJ7 have an unlocked bootloader yet?

It's not beneficial, just possible. And no

safestrap

Since my note 2 has 4.3 and a locked bootloader I understand I cant flash custom roms its rooted though. Is there a safestrap version that works it looks like it could be a very long time maybe never if we get this 4.3 bootloader unlocked.
