Safestrap vs cracked bootloader - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I've got a question. What's the difference between a cracked bootloader and safestrap? I know this is a noob question, but I can't find anything on the Web about this.

Safestrap allows those with a locked boot loader such as me7 or mi1 to flash custom touchwiz Roms based on that firmware. There is at this time no way to flash a custom kernel which means they cannot run aosp roms. This phone doesn't have a cracked boot loader but mdk users have the Loki exploit which allows a custom recovery to be loaded, only those users can flash any custom ROM for the phone, because you can flash a custom kernel. But its not truly unlocked. Safestrap does allow yto have ROM slots so you can have a couple of Roms ready to go at all times.you just decide which you will boot to when the phone comes on.

[Q] Flash rom with locked bootloader?

I seen some people say something about bootstrap recovery but i was curious to know like what roms will work or if it really is possible to flash a custom rom while the boot loader is locked
Custom roms are possible, custom kernel is not. Imperium, mof3.5, rocko, homebase, and jokerskinny are your options. Mof3.5 is the only one still in active development.

I've done some reading and am still unclear.
So, if I want ICS and still keep my 4G I would:
1) Unlock bootloader
2) Install CM9, make nandroid backup
3) Install custom ROM
4) Relock bootloader
I am certain this has probably been covered somewhere and apologize for asking such a goofy question.

If you want ICS and 4g you for cant have it. In order to retain 4g the only rom you can use is a locked rom as already stated there are several in the development section.
4g =locked rom.

What's so good about unlockable bootloader?

So, I bought a GSM Razr Maxx. First android phone and I'm super stoked to get it in the mail! (Currently running symbian 9.2 on a nokia e5!)
I expressed my excitement to one of my friends who is big into Android and he said "but that phone doesn't have a custom bootloader!" and proceeded to tell me that I couldn't install custom roms. Well, after doing some research, I realized that you COULD install custom roms on the Razr maxx using safe strap.
So my questions are
1) What is the advantage of an unlockable bootloader over using safe strap to install custom roms? That is, why would it be good for the razr(maxx) to get an unlockable bootloader?
2) I'm not a complete noob with technology, but explain as simply as possible... what is the difference in the way an unlockable bootloader work and how safe strap works?
3) Why are there so many people saying online that you NEED an unlockable bootloader for custom roms / Cyanogenmod when its simply not the case?
Thanks!

So in this case the advantage of an unlocked bootloader is that you are able to flash everything like custom kernel, ROM, baseband and radio. With safe strap you only can flash custom ROM and a kexec kernel. So no baseband and radio.

thanks for your reply. What is kexec kernal, and what is implied by flashing baseband and radio?
Also, why are there so many forum posts saying you can't flash a custom rom without bootloader? Is safestep a relatively new innovation or are people just dumb =p ?

So kexec is a custom kernel which is loaded via the safe strap... Just Google because I am not in the kernel development.... Hmm often the radio is bugged and most of the custom ones haven't got these bugs anymore... The baseband is the more important thing in my opinion because with custom kernel(kexec) and custom baseband it would be possible to activate the lte in the chip which isn't activated in the xt910(more or less rest of the world) but in the xt912(us version)

Nope its not really flashing you can compare it more or less with virtual box but you start the box instead of booting to the normal ROM you boot to the slot you want to

Well now, when there is BMM available for the RAZR, unlocked bootloader isn't necesary - in BMM you can flash everything, including kernels, roms, radio fw etc., while still preserving your stock system.

Just tell your friend that we can flash almost anything we can (except custom kernels) and that we even have a recovery that allows us to flash up to 6 ROMs on our device At a time (using bmm). And To tackle the disability of custom kernels we have kexec kernels

[Q] Possible stupid question

So I just noticed today (been very busy with work) that there are some ME7 roms. I wanted to try the, is it Bone Stock one. So my stupid question, is if I try this rom.. I am not stuck to that am I? Like if I took the OTA I am stuck with that... that isnt the case with one of the ME7 roms, correct?
Sorry for the ignorance.
If you took the ota ME7 update, you can root, but cannot flash any roms as there is no custom recovery available. If your still on MDK, you can root and install custom recovery which will allow you to flash roms, even ME7 roms.

You won't be disappointed if you're looking for a stable ROM and good battery life. Not that I have anything bad to say about the others. All the active choices seem good.

S4 has never had an unlocked bootloader, it uses the Loki exploit which enables you to basically do everything you could do with an unlocked boot loader. I think all this bootloader talk has many misinformed. I could care less about an unlocked bootloader, I would like an exploit like Loki again if possible.
But to answer your question, you will still have the Loki exploit.

[Q] How to tell if bootloader unlocked

I'm still on MDK, rooted and installed TWRP through Goo manager; however, i never read anything about unlocking bootloader. I know when I had the S3, I had to root separately and unlock the bootloader separately. Is there a way to tell if my bootloader is unlocked?

You don't actually unlock the bootloader on the S4. You exploited a security hole in the bootloader to allow you to install TWRP. Root and a custom recovery is as unlocked as you get on this.

oh ok.. I never really understood the s4 was are able to install custom roms if the bootloader wasn't unlocked. I didn't unlock my bootloader on my S3 and flashed a custom ROM which gave me the infamous yellow triangle. I wanted to make sure if there was something else I needed to do before I flash custom roms on the S4.

If I was you, id install twrp 2.5.0.2 instead of 2.6.0.0 because the newest twrp is unstable at best. I made a zip for 2.5.0.2 today because I was tired of seeing people asking for support from 2.6.0.0

How about an ODIN version for those Dev Ed users?
Just thought I ask.

A locked bootloader will only prevent loading a custom recovery and custom kernels.
I have a Note 3 (wife has a G3), and my Note 3 is still bootloader locked, but I'm able to load Touchwiz-based ROMs that use the stock kernel.
The trick is that a sort-of-custom recovery developed that loads prior to the OS, but not from the locked bootloader environment. (I don't know how it works... it just does.) It's called SafeStrap, and it was developed initially by HashCode.
I'm not sure if something like that is possible on the G3, or if it's a Samsung-only thing. It is a glimmer of hope for a Plan B though.
Good luck to all! I'm looking forward to putting ROMs on the wife's phone.

It's highly unlikely we'll see safe strap for this device A) because Hashcode is no longer working on Safestrap projects as he's focusing on a new career and B) they are still working on unlocking the bootloader. The devs are confident they can get it unlocked, and, failing that, there may be a loki-style by pass so we could still get a custom recovery and anything safestrap like would be unneeded.
Safestrap is typically only used when a boot loader unlock or bypass is deemed virtually impossible.
