A locked bootloader will only prevent loading a custom recovery and custom kernels.
I have a Note 3 (wife has a G3), and my Note 3 is still bootloader locked, but I'm able to load Touchwiz-based ROMs that use the stock kernel.
The trick is that a sort-of-custom recovery developed that loads prior to the OS, but not from the locked bootloader environment. (I don't know how it works... it just does.) It's called SafeStrap, and it was developed initially by HashCode.
I'm not sure if something like that is possible on the G3, or if it's a Samsung-only thing. It is a glimmer of hope for a Plan B though.
Good luck to all! I'm looking forward to putting ROMs on the wife's phone.

It's highly unlikely we'll see safe strap for this device A) because Hashcode is no longer working on Safestrap projects as he's focusing on a new career and B) they are still working on unlocking the bootloader. The devs are confident they can get it unlocked, and, failing that, there may be a loki-style by pass so we could still get a custom recovery and anything safestrap like would be unneeded.

Safestrap is typically only used when a boot loader unlock or bypass is deemed virtually impossible.

So we got root. Now, what about boot loader.....Adam?

Okay so we achieved root n we are all happy. But its not done yet folks. We still need the boot loader unlocked. N lets be honest, there's only one man that can do this. Adam Outler. A lot of you seem to be coming from the S3. We all know that it was a ***** to unlock the boot loader. Adam was so close to cracking it before someone leaked the unlocked boot loader to him. So Adam said he's down to help us if we can get him a device. Here's the following he said:
"Yeah! I bet we can replace the Samsung Bootloader with U-Boot and then boot custom firmware. We've got plans for this on the similar Galaxy Camera which we are currently working on. I DO need this device.
Here's what I'd like to research:
1. Open-Source bootloader replacement
2. Dual-Boot from SD with Hardware modification
3. Possibly carrier unlock for use on AT&T and others
I need a device to complete this research. I don't have Verizon Wireless service, so, it's likely I will contest this device on XDATV when I am done. I'd hope to come up with a way to carrier unlock for everyone though. If I carrier Unlock it, I will keep it and use it for future projects/personal use.
Thanks for this offer. I would have never asked. If you can make this happen, Rebellos, Ralekdev and myself will get to work designing firmware and hardware mods to bust open security."
Now I just wanted people's opinions on if we should open up a donation thread for Adam. I mean the man is a genius. He was close to cracking the boot loader on the S3. Who knows, maybe we will get lucky enough to get Adam another boot loader leak
So what are your thoughts? Should we try to get him a device?

I'm in for 10$ Friday. Not getting the n2 till after Xmas, but definitely stoked about Adam possibly helping out.

Just a question, but do we need a recovery (twrp or cwm) before bootloader?

No we can use kexec (I think that's how its spelled) to flash without an unlocked boot loader. It takes the phone longer to boot up n we can't flash kernels without the unlocked boot loader

I am under the impression that this is not the case, as they are not mutually exclusive. One can happen before the other (but preferably bootloader). At this time from what I remember, we're having issues finding where the recovery actually lies. There's suspicions that it might be in a zImage and not in a block (since we cannot locate it).
I mean I just wanna get peoples opinions first. I know everyone including myself is getting tired of donation threads but this man can actually help us unlock the boot loader which is a big plus

It IS rooted BUT the bootloader is still locked, meaning we can't do any custom kernels or custom recovery, and we have to do any future flashing (until the BL is unlocked) via ODIN. Correct?
Never mind, i see that the boot loader unlock for the s3 does not work. So at least we can load a custom rom through Odin.

Bootloader unlocked?

Any word on how far people are or how close people are to unlocking the Bootloader?

has anyone found or started to work on an app to unlock your bootloader. like easy un lock on the galaxy s3
Sent from my Galaxy S IV
I doubt that will happen. The only reason that existed was because someone leaked a unlocked bootloader. So unless that happens for the GS4, I don't think you'll see an ez unlocker app.

I actually prefer the way it is now. The phone is basically unbrickable because you can't break the bootloader, but we can flash kernels, ROMs and recoveries without issues.

If we are able to keep using the Loki workaround is there a need to unlock the bootloader? Does this mean we will have to make sure not to accept any OTA's before we get a custom ROM on our phone? If there is an OTA that gets through to my phone, does this mean I wont be able to reroot if they patch the Loki exploit?

That is kind of my point...we already have the things that an unlocked bootloader gives you. The only thing is maybe unlocking for use on another network, but that is a pretty small population, and they can just get the dev version since they can't use the subsidy anyway.
The devs will make sure to break OTAs on the custom ROMs, and having a custom recovery prevents them, too. Or just flash an AOSP based ROM and forget it.
Or to put it simply, don't fix what ain't broke.

The only reason I ask is because I want to flash a custom Rom that is debloated and tweaked for more performance or a smoother interface. Am I able to do all that as the phone is now without unlocking the boot loader? And if so what are the risks of using the Loki tool?

I'm still learning about the custom recovery. I created one using GOO, does that automatically stop OTA's, or should I try and do the file renames and freeze with TiBu?
There will still be work done to try to get a full unlock rather than a workaround. VZW will find a way to patch dans exploit. What happens to people who buy the phone after that? SOL? or if you break yours and have to get a replacement, and that one has the patch? Dans exploit is fantastic, but we should still look for a permanent solution.

Flash Custom ROM without Bootloader unlock?

Is it possible to use custom ROMs without an unlocked bootloader?
Theoretically, yes. I did on my previous phone. A dev would have to cook a Rom with the stock kernel, etc.

could you explain a little more?
because i tried running cyanogenmod on my device but it showed up a security error, which i read somewhere is cause by a locked bootloader

Basically, when a ROM is made... It's either made from 100% scratch, or it's made with another ROM as it's base. For example...Paranoid Android used to be CM based... Meaning it used certain aspects of the CM ROM, but with the look/feel/features of it's own. So for this to work ona locked bootloader, the ROM cooker would have to use Stock as their base, and build up from there... I'm not a developer, so I can't go into extreme detail on this, I'm sorry.
But to properly answer your question... Yes, it is possible to do this... Will it happen?? Probably not, unless someone takes the time to port something over.
You got a security error, because CM changes things from the Stock base... So since it's not build from stock, it won't work unless the bootloader is unlocked, OR unless someone rebuilds it with the stock ROM as it's base.
For anyone else reading this... I hear MIUI is relatively easy to port onto a stock base...
okay. last thing. what 'changes' does the locked bootloader detect that it shows up a security error?
Boot.img has to be signed by LG. Not signed= security error. There is probably more to it than that but that is my understanding.

So, do you think it might not be an unnecessarily tough and time consuming job to port cyanogenmod in such a way that it would work on a locked bootloader device?

It's do-able... But may be pretty time consuming... If you have never ported before, I suggest starting with MIUI v4. From what I read, it's relatively easy. I know for a fact that MIUI, if ported properly, will work on locked bootloader, as my previous phone ran it with locked bootloader.
There is a workaround here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2099238
Artas and markolino had CM9 working on locked bootloader P760. Anyone interested in trying to port a ROM this way should definitely check out that link.

I have a doubt reguarding bootloader unlocking.
It is possible to flash custom recovery using fastboot, and then flash any rom using recovery.
Then is there any need for boot loader unlocking specially??
I flashed recovery using fastboot mode without any special steps of unlocking bbootloader.
And plz tell what is the good way of flashing recovery- through stock recovery or through fastboot mode or terminal or certain tools(mtk)
I have rooted my phone oneplus x using kingroot.... It is rooted.... I have checked it with root checker.... I have installed TWRP on my phone too... N i want to flash the paranoid android 6.0.1 on it.... I have downloaded it along with gapps package........ Now i want to flash ut but i am in doubt wheather it will flash properly because i haven't unlocked my bootloader..... So will i be able to flash this rom without unlocking my phone???

Safestrap vs cracked bootloader

I've got a question. What's the difference between a cracked bootloader and safestrap? I know this is a noob question, but I can't find anything on the Web about this.

Safestrap allows those with a locked boot loader such as me7 or mi1 to flash custom touchwiz Roms based on that firmware. There is at this time no way to flash a custom kernel which means they cannot run aosp roms. This phone doesn't have a cracked boot loader but mdk users have the Loki exploit which allows a custom recovery to be loaded, only those users can flash any custom ROM for the phone, because you can flash a custom kernel. But its not truly unlocked. Safestrap does allow yto have ROM slots so you can have a couple of Roms ready to go at all times.you just decide which you will boot to when the phone comes on.

[Q] Looking for a one click root . I am running Android 4.4.2

I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (SCH-1605) that is running android 4.4.2. I am currently out of contract with Verizon and I would like to start installing custom roms on my device. However, the latest OTA update has my bootloader locked down like Fort Knox. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike

You can use a method in the general section to get root, which isn't one click, but you have to unlock the bootloader to install custom recovery to flash roms which can't currently be done on 4.3 and up for this phone.

Ok. Cool. Hopefully, someone will find an exploit to get pass this bootloader soon.
.
So I'm on 4.3 and rooted. Am I still unable to have a recovery? I'm having horrible Wi-Fi issues and i can't figure out why. So wanna go back to og Rom to process and eliminate
