How Android roaming indicator works? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I came accross this situation which i cannot understand how.
I am using cyanogenmod 9.1 in my HTC Explorer (pico) with BSNL Mobile as carrier in India.
Recently, I moved to another state and android is showing roaming. After one or two days, the roaming symbol disappeared. Even in phone info (*#*#4636#*#*), it says not roaming.
Then i took a backup and started using the same ROM from start (wiped data and cache). Roaming indicator started showing. But even after a week, the roaming is still there. It says roaming in phone info also.
Then I restored my old backup. There is no roaming in that same backuped ROM!! How is this possible? One ROM says not roaming( ROM i was using in my home) and other says roaming. even after several switching between then few times.
The thing I noticed is that in one rom, it says network as "BSNL Mobile" but in the other it is "Cellone". Both are same operator only ie mobile services of bsnl is cellone.
How does android detect roaming?
Can you explain why this is happening?
Which android package is responsible for network selection?
Can we manually select which signal channel of same operator to use?
How can i make other ROM also to show as not roaming?
This is the same case with my friend also. He is also using BSNL in Samsung Galaxy W. So i guess its android and network dependent.

[Q] Data issue New phone (Atrix)

Hi,
I received the phone yesterday, put in the SIM which has data enabled on my old phone.
Voice calls work fine but I get a message saying that there is limited data connectivity. WIFI works fine.
Initially when I went through the set up process MotoBlur could not connect (later realised my WIFI was down) So I turned off Motoblur using Bluroff.
I have set up the phone with my gmail account and downloaded the market app. the version of the market app I have is 2.3.6.
My system details are as follows:
System V4.1.83
Android version 2.2.2
Baseband N_01.77.15p
I thought it might be the APN considering I am using it in AUS and it is an AT&T phone. Confirmed the APN with another phone on the same carrier and still no joy.
I have even inserted the other SIM to ensure it was not mine.
Data connections have all been switched to the on position, I also dowloaded an APN toggle to ensure that the data connection was on.
I have full bars from the carrier with an H+ symbol next to the bars.
There is a small window for me to send the phone back. I am hoping there is a simple explanation though.
Thank you in advance.
Was your last phone an iphone? If it was you need to switch the data plan.

Thanks,
I will go back to the carrier to confirm my access.

Not Registered on Network

Woke up this morning with everything working. Got out of bed and place my phone on my desk and turned on my computer. I then looked back at my phone to see i had not service. Confused, i restarted my phone to see if that worked and it didnt. I tried another sim and it didnt work either. i then put both of the sims in a iphone and it worked there. I restored the phone to stock and 2 other roms and it still isnt working. The weird part is when on stock i get signal bars even when their is no sim. When i try to dial out i get "Not Registered on Network"
Any help is great help

It doesnt even show my network operator, thats the weird part it only shows rogers and when i put a sim in for fido (Rogers>Fido) i got service but no h+ even with the correct apn i only got edge
My Network operator doesn't show as a normal either - I do a Search and get (after a wait) Telstra, Optus and Voda - choose Telstra and it pops up a 'Registered on Network' msg.

yeah when i search i only get rogers???? This is the single most awkward thing ive ever seen
EDITTZ Found the problem. The phone switched itself to only look for one band not all. +_+ dont know how it got their and how it pertained through all the wipes but got it working DDDDDDDD
i had the same very exact problem..and yes when its in auto mode it only detects gsm signal so the data is slow signal is E.
i usually use the wcdma only option so that the phone on searches for 3g h and h+ but now when i select that option it only gives me
not registered on network..and no data signal at all.. and also the weird thing is that there is a signal bar on it plus when i scan for
network it searches the other two carrier brand on our country not the sims own carrier. help anyone

Hey xTristinx, glad you got your phone working.
I have the same problem on my Galaxy S, my SIM wouldn't register a network on it but it worked on a different phone. My Galaxy S still gets a signal but always says "out of service". I think this might be a problem because my friend used his SIM card in my phone and it f***** up the bands. Could you give me any suggestions on how you fixed your problem?
Thank you.

[Q] Only data network available - no calling/texts

I picked up an unlocked TMo One in New York last week. I used it there with my Norwegian SIM with no problems.
Back home, I get "No Service" using the exact same SIM-card. Using the *#*#INFO#*#*-menu, I can see the SIM-card is recognised because it displays my carrier in the "Current Network" field. I am suspecting the TMo-infused Sense OS to reject my card, since to my understanding the phone is compatible with EU networks. Will i be fine if i flash another ROM, like the stock GPe, and get rid of the TMo-stuff altogheter, or is there another rock in the road here?
I used my Tmobile HTC One with the stock ROM in Norway using a Telenor SIM and in Greece using a Vodafone SIM.
I would make sure you have the proper APN info (I can't remember the appropriate one for the Norwegian carriers). I believe it should work without issues (mine did). If it worked with that SIM card already, it's not locked and it's not rejecting it.
Also, I found that when I returned home to the US, I had to choose Settings -> Mobile Data -> Network Operators and choose Select Automatically (even though it was already chosen). Maybe you need to do that too.
Currently I am running Android Revolution and that also works fine with my Norwegian and TMOUS SIM cards.
Good luck!
Thanks! I've at least made some progress. I tried setting Network Selection to automatic, and got reception, however only for about half a minute. I then tried adding my provider's APN info. This has given me permanent data connection, but still no GSM reception for texts and phone calls. I do get 2g data when in low coverage areas. I am finding this weird. Can anyone shed some light?
Okay. Just wanted to post my latest findings - if others are experiencing the same issue. I've flashed the latest Google Edition RUU, to see if the TMo ROM was causing it. But i still don't get GSM coverage. Data still connected on both 2G and 3G (haven't been within 4G coverage yet..)
When flashing I also updated firmware to latest.
Phone info says Current network: "NetCom" (my home network) GSM service: "Emergency Calls only" (I tested this, and I am able to place the call to emergency services) and GPRS service: "Connected" (I am typing this on my data connection via WiFi-tethering, actually)
The status menu shows this: Service state "Out of service" and My phone number "Unknown".
If anyone can come up with a theory, I am all ears..

Have you tried taking the phone to your provider? Maybe you need an update which or setting which they can provide.
I find it strange that it wouldn't recognize your phone number, usually that's a sign of some type of incompatibility with the phone and the network.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
I have contacted my provider to see if there's anything they can do. But they're playing a little hard to get.. I was afraid there would be an issue with compatibility at first, by since my data connection is all right, I'm not so sure. Also erdelyt above here says he has used the TMo phone in Norway without trouble. He has another provider, however. They run their own network, so I will be trying with one of their SIM cards next, if my provider NetCom aren't of any help. Thanks for your help so far. I'll be posting my findings further!
So, I got to try a Telenor SIM card the other day, and the issue is still there. Although, with that card the phone number was read and displayed in the phone info menu. The owner of the card suggested there was an unlock issue - but I did make calls with my phone and SIM card in the US, so I don't see how that could be.
So that's a small step further, but now I just have to wait to see what my carrier says..
I changed the title for this thread after my findings.. I got a new SIM-card for my carrier, and i got coverage to make one phone call, but after i hung up, it was gone. I am really in the dark here.. It can of course be a hardware fault, but that's a bit strange for an entirely new product..

[Q] Razr will not connect to mobile data

Hi!
I have Motorola Razr XT910K, and I am from the Philippines. I have been using the phone for almost a week now and it seems like it won't connect to mobile internet. I got the APN settings saved on the phone and the settings were pushed by the provider. I turned on the Mobile Data, also i checked data roaming as well. I already selected and enabled the APN that was pushed by my provider.
Here's what is going on: when I turn off the data, the "H" is seen beside the signal bars icon but there is a red circle with a slash which means data is turned off. But when i turn the mobile data on, the "H" disappears and only the signal bars icon is left, aside of course from the time and other icons on my notif bar.
Can anyone please help me on this?
My phone is not rooted, running official 4.0.4 ICS.
my mobile network state is either just connecting or disconnected.
I tried to use my sim with another phone and it can connect to the internet.
I don't if i just missed one setting on the phone.

I just got the same problem earlier today, and solve at the end, below is my procedure, just for your reference.
Try "Settings" > "More" > "Mobile networks" > "Access Point Names", and delete those APN(s) that your are not using.
You may also want to try to search APN auto set up in the play store.
my 2 cents

[Q] Can rooting disable international roaming?

My venerable Samsung Galaxy S i9000 (rooted, Android 4.2.2 using CyanogenMod 10.1.2 ROM, on Virgin UK) has always served me very well when roaming abroad, and up to last year I had no problems with data connections. I'm just back from France, and could not get any data connection for the entire 2 weeks I was away (I bought a travel pass of course, and got confirmation of validity). This is totally unprecedented. I spent hours on the phone (calls and texts were OK) to Virgin, who variously said they needed to refresh my account settings at their end, then that there were known European network issues, and then that the problem was with the phone. I was told to turn on international roaming, but I don't have that option. The options at Settings>networks>mobile networks are:
Data enabled - ticked
Data roaming - ticked
National data roaming - ticked
Access point names
Use only 2G networks - unticked
Network operators
I don't have anything called international data roaming, and indeed have never seen this on any Android version I have ever had. I have seen images of other phones where `data roaming' is replaced by `international data roaming', and I'm sure there is no technical difference. Roaming is roaming surely?
I am very suspicious that there is actually nothing wrong with my phone, and that something odd is going on with Virgin. The reason is that last year I was running Android ICS using a different ROM, and mobile data kept turning off. This went on for over a week until Virgin found it was their fault and fixed it. At that time they never mentioned international roaming. I've done the usual searches and not turned up anything useful. There can't be anything wrong with the handset because data access turned straight back on when I got back to the UK. Can anyone shed any light?
Hmm. Calls and texts were working though, just not data? And it wasn't an APN setting? I'm assuming they had you check those. Did it show you were connected to data but there was no data transfer? In Settings > About Phone > Status - what would it say? Disconnected? You've used the phone on that other network before? It's possible that the other carrier's data frequencies aren't supported by the phone.

Yes they got me to check all settings and all were OK, except that according to Virgin there should be this `international data roaming' option which I don't have. The signal strength icon on the home screen showed a little R not a little H as normal. So I don't think there was any data connection. My key question though is whether there is any evidence at all that rooting affects roaming. I've been searching the web for over a week and found nothing about that. Frankly I don't believe it.
