I will be purchasing one soon, but i see alot of problems! Is this just because no one posts "everything is good" and most posts are just going to be "mine broke"?
including, leds/trackball light, broken pixels, screen gap etc
also is there any thing in common between the broken ones? Ex mostly white ones are breaking
and does htc offer a warranty at all?, i found the hero for 580 usd w/ free shipping but no return policy/warranty...this is scaring me!
Should i get white with teflon coating or brown which i sort of like more?
also i plan on rooting the hero, and i want to be clear on if you can put it back to normal after rooting if i have to return to htc.
one last thing, a few posts said "mine died"... is this totally dead? will they be able to see if it was rooted in this case?
Sorry for the long post!
ps, please post color and (maybe model number???) and if its broken or not

Mine is an unlocked HTC-branded brown one. No hardware problems so far (2 weeks).

Problems with build-quality (screen gap) seems isolated to some batches of operator-branded phones.

The brown one also has a rubbery-like surface. Not sure if its teflon, but its definitely not the usual hard&glossy surface that most phones have.

It shouldn't be a problem. I'd also expect HTC to reload a "known good image" on any returned phone before they run any form of diagnostics test.
thanks very much!
No problems with mine either..going on two weeks, white unlocked from clove.co.uk.
No problem here
all good here... lovin my hero!!!
Mine is still perfectly fine - no issues with build/hardware at all.
personally
before i bought my htc hero
i read reviews
most of them having a go at this n that and forums complaining about broken this n that
personally and through experience
reviews are just dumb they pick out on anything and everything i suppose thats what reviews are for but some of the stuff ive read on hero are really lame
and broken hardware etc comes to one result
people not taking care of the phones ive had me hero for some time theres nothing on it not even a scratch tried scratching the screen and back with a key no marks
its a good robust phone

well i just have to point out something. I bought my phone a week ago and till a few days ago, me too i thought that i was a happy hero owner until i read issues about the led thing and checked my phone. I do not know if i have the headphone prob as i never checked it out. What i want to say is that some issues are present and you wont notice them unless u pay attention to them.
Do u want to say that gap issues between the screen and more than 30 ppl complaining about issues with led, trackball and headphones ( probably more but some of us do not know it yet) are due to the fact that we dont take care of our phones????
I'm gonna jump right in, and just say. i've had my hero for 2 weeks and loving it.
This is my first android phone, so I took a little getting used to, think the missus is getting fed up with me checking forums and stuff. But all in all I am extremly happy with my Hero.
I use it everyday for:
E-mail
Facebook
Calls
Messages
USB Modem
Surfing
RSS
Podcasts
Performs better than my Ipod Touch ever did, and I almost never have to hook it up to the laptop... Loving IT!
so far mine works fine (1 week). the gap is a problem with some branded phones but mine (T-Mobile Germany "2G Touch") has no gap. the problems with the headphones and LED seem to be software related, since there is a workaround to manually activate the headphone again.
oh and BTW I <3 Hero. best phone i ever had.
got 2 on first release from orange (graphite), 6 weeks ago, 1 for me and 1 for me gf.
no screen gap issues, no dead pixels on arrival, but i had one appear after 2 weeks, right down bottom right of phone, extremely small and never notice it at all unless im on dead pixel detect.
gfs phone hasnt any dead pixels as of yet.
not a single other problem like leds or headphones.
2 totally happy customers here.
Totally happy with mine, no hardware problems so far.
Best phone I've ever had especially with how much I
Like to mess with stuff.
I was happy only one day. If I use longer (about 10 min) my Hero screen starts flashing. If I make reset, everything is ok for some period. I hope it's not serious problem.
I had the LED issue for a while, but just updated to the new rom, and they are back, so this could be a software, not hardware issue
Oh, and love love love the phone
I have read many posts saying that the new ROM update will fix LED and Headphone jack issues.
I just bought a phone on eBay myself, haven't had the chance to play around with it too much since I need to change my plan beforehand, but I have turned it on and look around and everything is fine. It is a White Unlocked one. I must say, the Teflon coating is like nothing I've ever felt before on a phone, it just makes it feel like a million bucks!
But besides the color, which is up to you, I would say get the phone! There is always a 1 year manufacturer warranty, even if the seller doesn't offer you one of their own.
An official HTC update will be coming out VERY soon if you don't like the idea of loading up a custom ROM (although it is highly recommended as there are added quirks such as root access).
So I kinda decided I got to life with the little dust part. I can almost not see it and with all the finger spots on the screen it will not be visible to. I might only be able to see it with screen off and very clear light outside.
So I wonder how many people have this problem? On internet I saw many have that and with some its not just one small one, but more and other I read kept getting HTC Evo 3D's which every time had the problem to.
I contacted HTC but they said I need send it for warranty and then I might not have it 2 weeks and further more I unlocked the bootloader with HTCDev so I kinda voided parts off my warranty, so I'm not willing to take that risk for something that doesnt really bother me to much as there is no garuantee that they will not charge me.
As HTC knows I unlocked my device.
Your warranty is void for software related I issues this has nothing to do with ROM or bootloader I would send it in
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using XDA
And then waiting two weeks and not having an smartphone? Yes they said I could send it in, would take about 2 weeks they said.
They have two options, HTC sends a courier to pick it up or I could to one off the shop-in repairs. But I think you right, they say 2 weeks, but my experience is that HTC is quite fast, I had with mine HTC Desire HD it back within one week.
I had this issue on my second new evo when they first came out.. First one I had wireless went bad in it.. After a week of using..
The second one had one spec of dust looked like a dead pix but wasn't was dust tiny tiny but so damn annoying ... I sold it..
Ended up buyin a new one a year later
That was mine plan to selling it as I was really dissapointed and especial in the store where I bought it, but that doesn't work really and I like the phone. I'm going use HTC warranty. I'm going make the phone ready for warranty. Who knows when it comes back there will be ICS.
I can miss it right now I think, not when I go to China.

It will never come back with ICS
I have some dust under my screen as well. A large dust particle in the middle and then some dust spread out near the front facing camera. I have insurance and I tried to take it in to the Sprint store and have them replace the screen or at least clean the screen.... And they wouldn't do it.... They kept telling me all phones have dust under the screen after a while.... Dumbass techs....
Warranty in my country is better I guess. But I think they probably send me a new one as I don't know if they can fix it, I rather would have had the store gave me another one, but they don't do that, so I will have no phone for about 2 weeks, but I hope they do it as fast as last time, as I had to send mine HTC Desire HD also in for warranty.
But the store where I bought it wanted also only send it to warranty, so then I can as well do it myself directly via HTC. Why you can't get it fixed? Dust doesn't belong under an screen for sure? I would try it again if I was you.
I don't know if you can get warranty via HTC? But I they give 2 years warranty in Europe. I meant not they will put ICS on I meant maybe when its back the ICS update would be out there already.

Hope you get it fixed man dust is so annoying lol. That was the first time I ever seen dust under the glass on a HTC phone.. HTC said to send it in to them and they would fix it but I didn't want to wait 4 weeks to get it back so I sold it ... Been happy with the one I got now..
My experience is that HTC is faster in the Netherlands, last time when mine HTC Desire HD needed be fixed it was just 1 week, I hope it will be fast like this again because I will be without phone in that time.
Oh yeah I find it also annoying, its not like I only use it inside or in dark places, so I can see it when there is clear light like in the day. I also though selling it, but selling it kinda hard because HTC Evo 3D is not so popular, most people look for HTC Sensation (XE).
Previous week on 28th March Dynafix which HTC sends if you are in the Netherlands came to pickup mine device.
Now on 3 April it has been shipped back to me and I think tomorrow on 4 April I will get it, so it took completely one week and I heard nothing about that I relocked mine device.
They writed down that they replaced the display module. I hope now everything is right because this an great phone for less then € 300 new.
Hi guys, I'm about to buy a second hand HTC ONE but I heard that trhe camera has a defect, purple tint.
-How can I check if it does have the defect?
-Is it something that happens over time?
-Is there anything I should know before I make this purchase?
Thank you!
If it has the tint problem, it usually seems to be at its worst when the phone is warm. Neither my m7, or my wife's m7 have this problem though, so I can not say for sure.
Most of these M7 camera problems I have seen have been software related.
The newest camera app provided with the Sense 6 update is fairly good at fixing this issue.
The HTC One is bar none the BEST phone I have ever owned. And I own MANY.
Don't let this glitch stop your purchase.
The issue is about screen getting glitched output. I don't think this is a software issue. There is some hardware issue because I tried flashing 5.0, 5.0.2, 5.1.1 still problem persists. Randomly at any time the glitched screen like seen in the pic is popped up in between from any app or just home screen. First i thought some app may be causing this but its not the issue. I deleted all the apps still this problem stays.

Hmm thanks
I've been spreading word in xda about the same issues. If you search the Q/A forum, you'd find too many people having this issue. This is due to a faulty GPU when the device heats up excessively. Recurrent issue in a Nvidia chip. If you bought it recently within 30 days on eBay, I'd suggest you return your device and claim your money back. Else I'm afraid you are screwed since neither HTC nor Google offer warranty if purchased through unofficial sources in India.

Now that what i feared. Let me see if they will take this back. Anyway thanks for the info that was really helpful
Unfortunately your Nexus 9 is toast. This happened to my first one and it got so bad it would happen during boot and I couldn't get any further. HTC was next to unless. Delt with them for 3 weeks trying to get an exchange. They are clueless. They wanted to try flashing stock image over and over. I'm like dude, I'm a Nexus owner. Don't you know your customer base? Anyways, best buy agreed to exchange it for a new one if I bought their premium protection plan, which I did gladly. But it is a hardware failure. There's no fixing it.
I just had my day one nexus replaced for the same issue last week. Had been getting worse for months. I called warranty service, told them about the screen corruption/noise/lockup issue needing a mainboard replacement. sent my tablet back and they overnited me a replacement that appears brand new (mine was mint condition as well). Still has lightbleed and so-so buttons but works great and I've put it through its paces. Only thing I had to tell them was the serial # but I was the original amazon purchaser.
Is it a newer build date than your original?
I had an experience similar to techiedj's. Got my old N9 replaced by Google a few weeks ago. Replacement looked brand new, but is actually an older built with slightly crappier buttons. Curious how long this one will last now...
These are the symptoms that I saw: At some point the screen started to flicker for a few seconds, then froze, and slowly turned black. After a few second I could turn on the display again. The area on the back next to the camera had become hot, but apps that read the sensor values did not really show high temperature (50 degrees or so). A good way to trigger it was to open Chrome and open multiple pages in a short time (opening different links in new tabs). Surprisingly, seemingly GPU intense games were less affected by this than Chrome. Factory reset did not help, even when I skipped the initial login/restore apps step.
Hopefully they aren't all doomed to this fait at some point. I have best buys replacement plan now, so this this can die early Jan 2017 and I'll get whatever the new Nexus is then.
Not really. HT4AJ I think it was, HT4AY on this one.

I went from an AE to an AF. Hard to believe best buy still had old stock, but I guess they didn't sell a lot of these. Buttons are nearly perfect on this one though. Way more tactile and the volume up isn't sunken in.
My tablet has random freeze with blurry image. I need to force power off. i do factory reset and in the setup freeze again. I attach the image. if someone experiment the same symptoms and can fix please let me know.

I'm not sure if your conditions are as bad as these posts have reported.. BUT my first N9 had the screen freeze, pixelated display; and became progressively worse, and in addition to the system freezing, my tablet would emit a loud screech sound when the event happened. Tablet was ~4-5 months used. I sent the 1st tablet(purchased November 2014) to htc and they replaced the mainboard (so they claim), 2-3 months later the same problem began happening again. I'm still within 1 year warranty, and HTC sent me a replacement this time, manufactured November 2014... hopefully this was the initial batch of hardware with problems..

This happened to mine after 4-5 months as well and I just wanted it replaced, had a hell of a time with HTC, but I have a new one now. So far so good, but there is a growing post of users on Google + all experiencing this issue. HTC/Google needs to openly communicate if this is a known hardware fault with the first batch. As far as I'm concerned it should be illegal for any company not to. What happens if it doesn't fail until just after the warranty period. They are going to say we're SOL for something they knew was a ticking time bomb? I've only seen one company get a situation like this right and that was Microsoft with the red ring of death on the original Xbox 360. Extended the warranty to 3 years with all shipping included. You called an 800 number, a new 360 arrived and the old one went back in the box.

Best Buy was nice enough to exchange mine if I agreed to purchase the 2 year premium replacement plan from them, which I honestly wouldn't own this tablet without at this point. I can drop and smash it and they will replace it no questions asked until end of Jan 2017
HTC send me the new one but do not has warranty. I worry that after 5 or 6 month of use the problem happens again. Maybe i will sell the tablet. I lost the confidence of the HTC Nexus 9
