This has happened either twice or three times in the past month. I will plug my phone up to the charger overnight with it on, as always. When I wake up in the morning, the phone is completely unresponsive. I can't even get the "manual reboot" method to work, I always have to end up doing a battery pull.
This has been on two separate ROMs, kernels, etc. If this happens again I might have to get a different phone, never had this problem with the S3.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this?
I've started noticing this as well. Except mine does it just with me hitting the power button to get it to unlock. What ROMs have you tried maybe its one of them?
I'm using EclipseTW. Thought about getting a replacement because of it but don't want to risk getting an ME7 phone.

CleanROM and Eclipse.
The phone is basically frozen, nothing responds not even manually rebooting it, which I thought was supposed to reboot the phone no matter what.
It's called a SOD. Usually has to do with your phone not liking a custom kernel. If you are using a custom ROM that includes a custom kernel that is most likely the cause. Try flashing a different like Faux's.

+1 Most of my SOD's have been kernel related. Try flashing the stock kernel.

I have also had problems like this because of a bad battery, or bad cable/charger.

Title pretty much says it all. I have a stock, i777 running on 2.3.6 and yesterday out of the blue, the phone would lock up (not respond to any touches on the screen, the power button or the volume rocker) so I would pull the battery out and restart it. When I did, the battery would drop off like 15%.
I did a search but didn't find any relevant issues. Many people simply complained about battery drops after regular restarts, not after freezes.
Would greatly appreciate some help!
Same thing, it has to do with the fuel guage of the phone

I hate when that happens. Is there anything to do? I'll go from like 85% to 10 after a crash. Does that fubar the battery? Cause it does charge all over again

In my experience this evens out after another charge or two.

U didn't say whether u were rooted or not. So I'm assuming you aren't? Which means screen lock ups aren't from undervolting?

Read this and see if it helps..Entropy explains why the battery gets crazy after a reboot. I would assume it would be the same if you had to pull the battery, the gauge i guess would still get reset.

I said I was stock in the first post. Is there something else you need to know? Just to clarify, I haven't modded/rooted/etc. Still on stock 2.3.6 w/ Touchwiz.
The battery issue isn't the major issue, it's the freezing of the phone multiple times a day. Is there a diagnostic tool I can use that will show a log of the processes that were running when the phone froze? That could help me narrow down the issue.

I think you can avoid the battery level glitch by plugging in a charger before you reboot.
Maybe the freezes are being caused by a rogue app. I can't remember what the app is called at the moment, but there is one app that monitors cpu usage and can warn you if an app is using too much cpu time.
Watchdog and betterbatterystats. Yes u can monitor apps. But I wouldn't think an app would just start doing that out of the blue. Hmm. Its really hard to tell ya what to do if you aren't even rooted, may wanna think about doing that. Opens up a lot more options for fixing / monitoring.

Restarts are a [email protected] on battery. Every system app hits at same time. The way charge stays in batt. Anything under about half on batt charge...it will seem to drain quicker. Its the chemical makeup of batt that does it. Think of bubbles in soda bottle... More full bottle more fizz more bang. Less soda... Less bang.... And flat. Keep off any widgets ....they tap batt constantly as well as data...which hits batt. Ahh Physics and Chemistry, love it.

I don't think the sudden drop in battery is anything to worry about. My phone does that but the battery level slowly gets higher over time without charging. The actual charge level in the battery doesn't change.
Had the same exact thing happen sort of mine would heat up, freeze, then shut off, restart all by itself but it would hard reset. So my question is, Is it a brand new device or refeb? I got a referb and had the same thing at first it would freeze then after a while it would start heating up then resetting itself. So call warranty dept and ask for a replacement device and not a new battery.

Every day my HTC AMAZE 4g keeps shutting down multiple times a day, is there a fix or should I request another one from T-Mobile?

I'm having the same issue. 4-5 times a day it'll just shut down and then take it's sweet time rebooting. Im rooted running stock 2.3.4 trying to upgrade to ICS which kind of tumbles into another issue. I'm trying to do the update to ICS via the OTA update and when it powers down it just boots into the Bootloader screen. My status for my bootloader shows <RELOCKED> followed by <SECURITY WARNING>.
If anyone could shed a little insight that'd be aces.
The random reboot issue seems to be battery related from what others have stated.

I can confirm this. I called t-mo and they basically told me that I'm SOL on a battery replacement. So, I got the Anker 2 pack on Amazon for 30 bucks, and I haven't had a reboot since.
Had the same issue. Called HTC tech support bypassing T-Mobile since I use a different carrier. HTC sent me a replacement battery.

this sounds like a recall-type of deal here. i'm having the same issues with my oem battery. called htc the other day, and they wanted my cc info to replace the battery. i'd still have to pay for shipping the old one back to them. will try calling again, and see if i can get one for free lol

same thing with mine. went through 2 amaze 4g's and 5 batteries in 2 months. I end up buying a new battery once every 2 weeks.
One thing i know that WILL kill my battery is if i plug it into the outlet on an amtrak train. Every time i exit the train, its dead. Learned that the hard way.
I also keep the rubber case that came with it off. It happens less and less that way. I think it's overheating, since it was very hot out each time.
Hello guys,
I've also about the same problem, My Amaze is Asian version with JuopunutBear S-OFF and ICS Speed Rom installed.
The problem with my phone is that while its charging or in use, it doesn't shut down, but when idle for some time with no music application running in background, it shut down.
then it doesn't turn on unless you pull the battery for a while and re insert it,
Can anyone plz tell me what's the issue, is it battery or some culprit application?
Thanks
I had the same issue on my phone. It was due to the kernel issue .I flashed super wipe once & flashed backup again . Now my battery is ok & I found no rendom shutdowns anymore . try this if it helps you.
Using stock rom 4.0.3 s-off Rooted.
HTC Amaze 4G.

which kernal you're using now??
I used to had the same issue. Tried updating Android using stock, changing the ROM to a custom one (CM, Energizer, etc.), changing the kernel. nothing seemed to help. In the meantime, I bought a battery from eBay. Took about 3,5 to 4 months to arrive (yeah, **** me, I'm from Argentina). I put it on and VOILĂ€. Holy solution.
It is an Anker one, so it has more capacity also
I m using faux kernel v. 31

well,I find where the problem is.The problem is nightmire kernel,The trouble disappear when you use stock sense 3.6,htc kernel.
So... hopefully this runs long enough. I'm having issues. Randomly, usually after I lock the scrren, then unlock it, the phone reeboots. And then it tries to power on but just keeps vibrating till I hit power button it happens frequently.
I used Odin to go back to stock and all that, but still does it.
Phone has been unlocked.
Thoughts?

I'm thinking if you went back to stock that it may just be the device itself that is dysfunctional. Does your device seem hotter than normal by any chance?

When I first got my GN2, I had an issue with it rebooting, this wasnt a huge issue as it usually only occurred once a day maybe every other day. I am now unlocked and rooted, running Cleanrom, and it still occurs occasionally, sometimes it won't even reboot it will just freeze my display will be off from not using it for awhile then I will pick up my phone and running to wake it up and nothing happens. My LED will be flashing blue though and the only way I can reboot is to pull the battery. Like I said not a huge problem because it only happens once every couple days. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?

Hello, I am having a problem with my note and it is scaring me. As soon as my note boots it is shutting off completely and restarting. I was just using it with fine last night. I had the uber kernel installed and oced to 1.9 cpu but it wasn't even that hot.. After thinking it was the Rom that was causing this I did a complete wipe and flashed the candykat Rom, upon boot when the cyogenmod log in screen appears it shut down and rebooted again.. twice. I'm hoping nothing is damaged internally. I am able to stay in the recovery just fine without any problems. Please help me.. And when I say shutdown I mean insta black screen and reboot..

Idk if I will do that lol. But now I think I know what the problem is. So yesterday I was using my note and it shut off. The battery was full and when it restarted the battery all the sudden dropped to 60%. It turned off again and went to 1%... I thought it was glitching when it said 1% but after amin it shutdown due to low battery. One thing I then tried was having my phone plugged in while using it and I played games, used my phony heavy and what do you know.. It didn't turn off. So I'm thinking I have a bad battery. PS: I took my note to a pawn shop and they said the battery was bloated. He said it wasn't supposed to spin while on a flat surface.. What do you think?
It seems while I'm playing a game the battery heats up and that causes shutdown cause I'm typing this and I don't have my charger plugged in and its fine..

Yes a bulging battery is a sign that it's bad. Batteries are cheap. Especially on eBay. I buy an extra battery and charging dock for all my devices. This way one is always fully charged, and I don't have to plug in the device unless I need Odin or to file transfer. I learned that lesson 2yrs ago when my usb charging port went bad.

Oh well then. That's awesome because I'm able to use my phone for more than 5 mins without it shutting down. It usually shuts down when I start playing a game or something intensive. So it has to be the battery! I'm really happy.
