How to toggle 2g/3g off while keeping 4g on - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I'm looking for a way to only have 4g on on my note 2. In my current location I have 1-2 bars of 4g but my phone continues to switch back to 3g every few minutes. I can easily get 4g back by toggling airplane mode on and off but it is a huge annoyance to have to do this. I have tried the 4g lte on/off thunderbolt app but receive a force close with beans 21. I'm also running nova launcher and don't see any widgets for toggling 2g/3g and 4g. Thanks for the help

You don't want 4G only. You wouldn't be able to send/receive calls or texts.

I realize that but that's why if I was able to toggle it on/off easily when needed it would be very useful. I was able to do this on my thunderbolt with lte on/off app(had toggles for 2g/3g/4g) so I'm wondering why it seems so difficult to perform on my note 2 or if it's simply a beans compatibility issue.
The problem is when I have a low/moderate 4g signal(1-2 bars) my phone seems to prefer 3g and switches to it every few minutes. The only way I can get it to switch back is to enable then disabled airplane mode and it will hold for another few minutes.
Still looking for any input/apps/ideas, thanks

Bump still looking for a solution to this. Currently in a situation(new location from before) with 1-2 bars of 4g but my phone continues to switch between 3g and 4g. There must be a way to "lock" 4g or toggle 3g off. This was super easy to do on my Thunderbolt

Install an AOSP rom. They almost all have a 4g toggle.

But do they also have a 2g/3g toggle? I need to be able to leave 4g on while not allowing it to switch to 3g. I guess I could try this but I really love beans rom and have actually been very satisfied with touchwiz in general with the note 2. But I guess I try that as a last resort. Thanks

I'm pretty sure there isn't an option for this that actually works. If our phone doesn't have 4g I think it just goes to 3g and there is no option to toggle it to 2g/3g. There was a thread that suggests switching it to 2g to save battery life, but all of the apps that are used to accomplish this don't have that option. I think it might've been something just in the international ROMS but i'm not sure.

That's upsetting to hear, it used to be so easy on my thunderbolt. The problem is when I have a decent 4g connection(by decent I mean 1-2 bars, not great) my phone seems to still prefer 3g which I typically have 3+ bars of. The problem is that 1-2 bars of 4g is substantially faster than 3+ bars of 3g. I can usually flip airplane mode on and off and lock a 4g signal for a minute or two but then it seems to jump right back to 3g. Incredibly frustrating, especially since there is one location where I spend a lot of time that this is an issue.
If anyone else has any info please let me know. Another user posted his custom application for me that was similar to the LTE on/off app(which force closes running beans 21) but his custom app force closes as well even though he stated it worked for him

I have the same issue where I live. My concern wasn't the fact the speed, though. My battery drops a lot when i'm at certain places at work because it is constantly searching, dropping, and using 3g/4g.
I looked for this awhile back, but I'm pretty sure this was a function only available on the international variants in their ROMS. That is why when you look at certain guides to improve battery life, it says to make it exactly like you are speaking of.

What was HTC/Verizon thinking???

Seriously, the best thing about the Evo was the ability to turn off 4G. Am I missing something here or did they omit this feature from the Thunderbolt? Cant find it anywhere. Without doing anything other than having email sync'd, a few texts and a few speed tests my battery is under 40% in under 4 hours from a full charge.

3) Scroll down to the 2nd drop down box and select the following :
CDMA+LTE/EvDO auto for auto switching between CDMA and LTE
CDMA auto (PRL) for CDMA only

If you want to turn data off entirely, that is in Settings, Wireless & Networks, Mobile Network checkbox.
Or do you want to have it on but slow?
it's not an option via the power widget?...oh no...hopefully custom roms will resolve this

The first thing I did was go into sync settings and disable the weather, stocks, and news syncing. Seems to help a lot, since I don't even use those stupid things.
So if you cant turn off 4g, does it sit there and keep searching for all of us not in a 4g area?
Is it smart and stops searching after a while, or long pauses in between searching?
This is for sure a deciding factor for me.
It's simple, because it does use a lot of power. LTE is not Wimax and this isn't a EVO running a 1st gen CPU.

I am not an expert, but afaik, if it does not find an LTE signal, it will camp on CDMA (eHRPD) to be specific. After that, the radio probably periodically scans for a 4G pilot in order to jump up to 4G if / when available. The frequency of the scan is probably dependent on who makes the LTE modem portion and how HTC has written their radio software.
Im sure it wont take long for someone to figure out how to modify that scan interval. Modifying that (depending on factory settings) IMO would have a good impact on battery life. We shall see with in the next day or so...
Really, that was the *BEST* thing about the EVO? I agree the option should be there, but it's not really a big deal.
Why assume it "scans" at all? I know they look for a data connection when they don't have one, but if I were designing the system, I would have the tower tell the phone what it has on the existing data connection, not make the phone ask.
I have to say that the title of this thread was EXACTLY what I was thinking when I couldn't find a way to turn off 4G. I doubt that it doesn't eat battery. Whether or not it is more efficient than EVDO is an interesting question.
I wonder if the lower band for 4G gives better performance, and thus doesn't require as much power as Sprint's.

losing data when data switches between LTE and 3G

I've been having this problem probably once a day since I've gotten the phone where my phone will lose data signal while switching between 3G and LTE and the only way to get data back is to restart the phone. Turning airplane mode on and off won't work either.

the 3G our phones use is not exactly the same as standard 3G unless you force your phone into EVDO 3G via the ##778 menu. which if you are not in a 4g zone I would recommend simply for stability. The 3G our phones use is basically a layer between 3G and LTE as I've had it explained to me.. I really don't know much else about it though, sorry. I'm sure someone else here can shine more light on it however.

I've had a ton of weird data issues with the Rezound. I get 1x where i should get 3g, i get 3g where i should get 4g and i get nothing way too often.
I've only had this happen once with the rezound. Shows nothing but bars, no data can be used. Sometimes switching to 3g or 4g in lte on/off helps.
Had this problem intermittently on both my wife's and my bolts, completely agree its just a lte being a new tech issue.
I've listened to a podcast on how the handoff works and its definitely not fool proof.

This changes your network from eHRPD back to EVDO Rev.A. For LTE phone owners, eHRPD causes 3G to die (most of the time anyway) when the LTE network has problems. Get back on normal EVDO and you're good to go.
^ from Jntdroid on another forum (not sure if we're allowed to post to other forums here) I'm not positive on where he got it from, but this is a capability of all HTC 4G phones
I've had occasional issues with being down to 1X, but even that was only during nationwide 4G network issues, definitely get in touch with VZW about that... not that they have enough sense to fix anything *sigh*

Why is Edge faster than 3G or H+ (see edit)?

Ever since I've transferred to AT&T I've had laggy data issues. I finally rooted/flashed to AOKP, and while trying to address the issues of no APNs appearing or saving and no signal status in the status bar, I've come to find both AT&T and T-Mobile as Available Networks under some network setting. Am I chasing ghosts here, or is there something actually up?
EDIT: So I really need help troubleshooting the issue. I'll logcat, dump, or whatever necessary. I've been in many cities/areas and this problem persists: if I haven't used data or the phone hasn't been backgrounding traffic, it'll take anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds before a connection is made when I try to access an internet-related function on my phone (even though 3G/H is displayed in the status bar). Out of shear frustration (this has been happening since I got the phone, under stock ROMs and now under AOKP), I tried messing with *#*#info#*#*. I changed WCDMA-preferred to WCDMA-only -- no improvement. Oddly, I also tried GSM-only. Well, great improvement! Even though I only have E, there is absolutely no latency in waiting for a connection -- so pages and other data end up loading faster on Edge than 3G !
I have absolutely no idea why my phone takes forever to make a connection. Under 3G, I see only but a few upstream network activity blips (even under full bars) for as much as 30 seconds, before there is any downstream activity (and when it comes, it comes). Can anyone help???
P.S.: I'm going to try using a friend's SIM later for comparison.

The phone displays 3G because thats what it is... then when data is being processed, it shows H because its using the "what AT&T calls 4G but its really HSPA" side of the network. For just standby time with no data, its going to show 3G because HSDPA is traffic, not standby.

Well that's strange. I'm used to phones displaying what network-level they are capable of. So why would it not just display H for HSPA+ when HSPA+ service is available, instead of only displaying under traffic.
I'm going to go ahead an edit this thread to help troubleshoot what I think to be the main issue.
After some trials I see that the network indicator switches back and forth between 3G and H a few tines before making the connection and transmitting data. Hmmm...
Basically, "4G" will eat your battery alive so the phone idles at 3G and jumps to H+ only when you use data. If you were on a "stock" ATT rom it would always read H+, but this is technically false since when its idle the phone sits in 3G. CM9 and AOKP accurately display it which is why you see the switch.

I have a HTC Amaze for a phone and the Galaxy S2 is my media player. Sometimes, when I don't feel like carrying around two devices, I put my T-Mobile SIM in the galaxy and use it as my phone. I must say, Edge is not as slow as I remember it being. Maybe speed is contingent on network traffic. If thats the case, instead of using crowded "faux G" networks, I may defer to Edge to save battery life and get good dl/ul rates.
My phone does the same thing. I noticed it sometime ago. When idle 3g. Internet I get H+. This is with both Shostock2 and Phone Bricker. I was curious to know too but just blew it off because it really doesnt make any difference to me as long as Im getting decent speeds. Im not even with ATT anymore. Went with Straight Talk. Which uses ATT towers. Cant beat the price!!
They don't have the correct apns, but that symbol problem is because the phone doesn't use hspa+ passively, only actively. It causes some lag when downloading, but it is faster fit large data. But your problem is due to a supposed imei range with bad modems. Rehash stick, fix the triangle, and return it.

I have an app I got from here called Phone info. Don't think it's on the Play store though. It's similar to what LTE switch was on my Rezound. It gives you the abillty to select the radio. However, I've noticed this phone is not "happy" when LTE is switched off. Many times when I know there is a 3g signal, and I force into EVDO it doesn't always take. And other times when it's stuck on 3g and I KNOW there is LTE and I force it into LTE only mode, it says not signal until I put it back into LTE/CDMA and then it picks up LTE. What I miss was the option the Rezound had where it was LTE/1x so it was LTE only but still had voice and texts.
see that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44962652&postcount=37
This app works fine for me. Its a couple of more keytaps but does the job like lte toggle app.
Of course until VZW gets their act together and launch band 4 across the country to fill in the gaps, this is the best to get around the constant switching/searching for baseband.

Signal drop out issues - Please help

Good day all!
I've been experiencing some issues since I got my C6806 3 weeks ago. I live in Toronto and my provider is Rogers. The phone itself is unlocked and is just running the stock software which is 4.2.2, build # 14.1.B.2.257
Ever since I got the phone I've had a periodic issue where the phone signal strength will just completely die out to 0 bars, then it'll come back to full bars about 30 seconds later. It happens whether I'm home or out on the road. It happens if I'm using LTE bands or 3G or HSPA. It also happens whether I've got wifi on or off.
Any troubleshooting steps you could suggest?
Thanks in advance!

How's LTE and HSPA where you are? If the signal is poor it'll switch over to the next thing on ladder. If you have a poor LTE signal it'll jump down to HSPA, and if you have a poor signal on that one it'll jump down to EDGE. It's the same dance if you walk into an area where there is good LTE coverage. It jump up from EDGE or HSPA to LTE, and iin all cases when it switches, you'll notice a couple of seconds where it connects to the new frequency (by having zero signal). That's why I disable LTE when I know I'm going to be in an area with poor LTE signal for a long period of time.
Not saying that this is your problem, but try only using EDGE for a couple of hours and see if it happens again.

LTE and HSPA coverage by Rogers in Toronto is great overall. I don't really use the LTE APN because it seems to suck up battery life immensely. I just keep it in the normal APN that seems to switch randomly between HSPA and 3G. The issue can occur if I'm just sitting still in a spot. I'm using it, and all of a sudden the signal just cuts out for about 30 seconds and comes back. Both before and after the incident I am usually at full bars.
I'm unsure of what EDGE is. The only things I control are the APNs I obtained from Rogers - one is just the standard one that gives me 3G and HSPA, and the other is LTE.
Dunno what else I can really do. I doubt it's my provider so it's gotta be the phone. Any other real troubleshooting steps to try, or should I just get this to Sony?

EDGE is 2G. so turn off LTE and HSPA+ and see if it does it.
I don't have the LTE equipped phone so I'm not sure if these hardware functions will switch on and off randomly.
It sounds like your hardware is switching between 4g and 3g. problem is that both wont work simultaneously, so you would get this drop off. solution is that build prop edit i gave you.
But then you'd have 4g on all the time. so if you don't want that then turn it off manually.
Try these.
Edit your build.prop file.
(do you know how to do this??)
and insert these.

that will stop hardware switching between 2g/3g/4g
as well as make it faster.

You'll still have mobile data, but it will be SLOW. I think the top speed is around 400KB/sec, but you'll only use this to check if your signal is more stable without 3G/4G.
Tip: If you want to save battery and you aren't the type that uses a lot of mobile data, use EDGE (the thing i'm currently writing about). 4G uses a lot of juice.

Thanks. Just made the change and will keep an eye on it over the next day or two.
Just gotta say holy crap this Edge thing is SO slow. Even just loading icons on Google Plus or Youtube searches takes forever. A mobile speed test is showing about 133 kbps...
Damn... gotta come up with a better solution that doesn't require having slow as shyte data access
I'm trying WCDMA only to see how this might work. At least the speeds are more tolerable there.

Yeah, but keep using it for now. You're only checking if the signal drops while your on it, so I'm not saying that you should keep using it. It's only for a couple of hours. You can do it!

*sigh* I'll try
lol
EDIT. Nevermind the part below. I just kept trying more SMS apps until I settled upon GO SMS and it seems to finally be able to load photos. Damned weird the default one wouldn't do it
On another note, can anyone explain why the built in Messaging app has issues both sending and recieving photos? Plus there're a few instances where it says I've got a message, but I've viewed them all. I've even tried downloading a few other messaging apps from the Play store, and they can't seem to view or send photos either. Damned weird if you ask me.

I'm not using the stock messaging app. I'm using Hangouts as my main SMS app, but I didn't have any issues with it when I used it. The Android 4.3 update is released now, so you can update to it through PC Companion? Note that this will remove root and stuff like if you're rooted. If not, go ahead.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just want to say that I'm having the exact same issue. I thought it might have occurred after I installed a custom room but I'm now back on stock and still experiencing 4 bars immediately dropping to no service and then going back to 3 or 4 bars before slowly dropping back to zero. I figured it could be LTE, so I experimented with all settings under mobile networks to no avail. I try the same Sim in my note 2 in the same location and I have no issues. I believe this is an issue with the antenna or a general hardware fault. My phone is the c6806, originally on Bell but being used on Telus. I have already contacted Sony but they are giving me the runaround
Anyone know how the warranty is handled in Canada? Anyone else have this problem?
Signal issues
Sorry I'm restarting this thread one more time.. But anyone figure out a fix? I'm having the same problem on a brand new phone... I had the same phone before I lost it. Got it again but these signal dropping issues now . Never had these on my previous cc6806
