[Q] 4g Toggle? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Anyone have any luck finding a toggle or switch to disable 4g? Running eclipse tw based. My office is on the borderline between three and four G. Kills my battery.

I have an app I got from here called Phone info. Don't think it's on the Play store though. It's similar to what LTE switch was on my Rezound. It gives you the abillty to select the radio. However, I've noticed this phone is not "happy" when LTE is switched off. Many times when I know there is a 3g signal, and I force into EVDO it doesn't always take. And other times when it's stuck on 3g and I KNOW there is LTE and I force it into LTE only mode, it says not signal until I put it back into LTE/CDMA and then it picks up LTE. What I miss was the option the Rezound had where it was LTE/1x so it was LTE only but still had voice and texts.

see that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44962652&postcount=37

This app works fine for me. Its a couple of more keytaps but does the job like lte toggle app.
Of course until VZW gets their act together and launch band 4 across the country to fill in the gaps, this is the best to get around the constant switching/searching for baseband.

Cyanogen 7 Rc Mobile Network Selection Question.....

Which ones should we be using for the Tbolt?
So far from what i noticed...
LTE Only (when iuse this i dont get phone calls or cant make calls)
Global+LTE (seems to be the 4g Only mode to me? i canmake calls)
GSM/WCDMA/LTE (not for us? )
CDMA+LTE/EvDO auto (This is for full 1x,3g,4g)
Global (????)
CDMA w/o EvDO- (Guessing just plain 1x?)
CDMA/EvDo Auto (3g/2g? )
i assume we dont use the ones below:
GSM/WCDMA Only
GSM Only
GSM/WCDMA Preffered
I did a quick search but didnt find a answer..
Still Googl'in....
You want to use CDMA+LTE/EvDO auto
I find that i have to set it to CDMA / EvDO and wait for a 1x or 3g connection then switch to the CDMA+LTE?EvDO mode to actually get 4g.
I was hoping i can set it to 4g only again like with The sense roms to save on battery?
No sir
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA Premium App
LTE+Global seems to work too.
LTE alone doesnt let me make phone calls.
My question now is.. what is "Global"?
I'd really like to have this answered as well.. I just flashed Cyanogenmod 7.1.1 and if I use LTE only (like I used on Sense roms) I keep getting sms not delivered errors (haven't tried making a call... but from this thread I'm guessing it won't work)
is Global + LTE our "LTE only" on this rom?
I like using LTE only because the 3g/4g auto choices like to chomp my battery.
(And I second the question: What is "Global"?)
If you're wise, you will avoid messing with those and just use the toggle button on the power widget.

I understand where you're coming from, however, the "4g" option on those types of toggles usually means 4g/3g auto, rather than 4g only. The reason we are looking for the answer for this is we want the 4g only option that will still get voice reception. I like to use the 4g only option to conserve battery (and it makes a huge difference to me, I'm at work for 10.5+ hours a day, and if I have it on 4g/3g auto, it dies pretty quickly. If I have it on 4g only, I can go home with up to 60% of my battery left!)

If you do "4g only" it's still going to fall back to 1x if LTE is not available. I don't quite see the advantage of it really.
Settings to Try
Cyanogen is built for multiple phones so a lot of these options apply to GSM phones not our CDMA phone, our phones are at their base a CDMA phone with an LTE chip added on for only data access.
so you don't use options that don't reference CDMA.
Cynogenmod doesn't have a CDMA/LTE only mode.
Don't Use
LTE Only - don't use this it turns off the cdma radios, ie no phone calls or texts
GSM/WCDMA/LTE - not for us, this is for GSM or World phones not ours
Global+LTE - (This is for full 1x,3g,4g), but I wouldn't use it, this for for verizon world phones that have CDMA and GSM radios, my guess is that a lot of unnecessary GSM code is running with this option
Global - this for for verizon world phones that have CDMA and GSM radios, my guess is that a lot of unnecessary GSM code is running with this option
Valid options
CDMA+LTE/EvDO auto (This is for full 1x,3g,4g) - this is what the vast majority should use most of the time.
CDMA w/o EvDO- (Guessing just plain 1x?) yes it's just plain 1x, if you really need to save battery life for calls this will save it, but your data will be basically unusable.
CDMA/EvDo Auto - If your in a 3G only area for a long time this can save you some battery life, because it won't constantly be looking for a lte signal that isn't their.

losing data when data switches between LTE and 3G

I've been having this problem probably once a day since I've gotten the phone where my phone will lose data signal while switching between 3G and LTE and the only way to get data back is to restart the phone. Turning airplane mode on and off won't work either.
Ive had that issue too..but most of the time it switches back n forth no problem

why should bugs in the LTE system affect 3G?
the 3G our phones use is not exactly the same as standard 3G unless you force your phone into EVDO 3G via the ##778 menu. which if you are not in a 4g zone I would recommend simply for stability. The 3G our phones use is basically a layer between 3G and LTE as I've had it explained to me.. I really don't know much else about it though, sorry. I'm sure someone else here can shine more light on it however.

same here guys. call Verizon and let them know. I think it helps if a bunch of us make them aware.
I've had a ton of weird data issues with the Rezound. I get 1x where i should get 3g, i get 3g where i should get 4g and i get nothing way too often.
I've only had this happen once with the rezound. Shows nothing but bars, no data can be used. Sometimes switching to 3g or 4g in lte on/off helps.
Had this problem intermittently on both my wife's and my bolts, completely agree its just a lte being a new tech issue.
I've listened to a podcast on how the handoff works and its definitely not fool proof.

This changes your network from eHRPD back to EVDO Rev.A. For LTE phone owners, eHRPD causes 3G to die (most of the time anyway) when the LTE network has problems. Get back on normal EVDO and you're good to go.
^ from Jntdroid on another forum (not sure if we're allowed to post to other forums here) I'm not positive on where he got it from, but this is a capability of all HTC 4G phones
I've had occasional issues with being down to 1X, but even that was only during nationwide 4G network issues, definitely get in touch with VZW about that... not that they have enough sense to fix anything *sigh*
Data Connection slow to Acquire (3G/LTE)
If I'm on the subway, or somewhere with no service, then come above ground, I get voice (full bars) but no data -- it could take upwards of 3 minutes+ for data to come back up. Any thoughts?
I've been losing my 3G service throughout my city, being restricted to 1x so many times lately where I SHOULD be getting 3G!(4G isnt available in my area yet). It's really annoying...perhaps nexus isnt theeee only one...

Is it True or BS that EVO LTE will have a fix for LTE connection issues?

I really like this phone but want to make sure that the LTE connection issues are able to be fixed with a software update. I hope Sprint isn't BS'ing on this. I have a couple of days to return the phone and want to make sure this is fixable before deciding to keep it.
Anyone know if the Sprint rep who said it's a software issue is telling the truth or BS?
At heart it is a good radio. No reason it shouldn't work as it's supposed to. So, the majority of the issue is software. And it is fixable. Maybe just as good as S3 and iPhone 5 LTE reception?
The big question here is if Sprint will actually fix it this time. Know that there were fixes for LTE in 2 previous ota's. To what extent they worked on it before, idk. Thinking that this time is make or break it.
So, the answer is wait and see. U can get out of contract if LTE doesn't work for u though. It's apart of your service plan. Gonna require persistence on your part to get out after the 14 days is up, but u can do it.
If I were u and needed a good LTE capable phone, I'd go with the S3. Because at this point, it is up in the air if it will receive LTE like it should in the near future.
Correction first update was wifi, second was lte lol
Hope so. Has to be software related since both this and the s3 have the same radio. And, since the airplane mode on/off trick gets it working, I'm lead to believe its software.

Airplane mode trick???
I really hope they can fix this. I decided to keep the phone after looking at the S3 screen and build quality I just couldn't switch. I really love the screen on this!! It is just as good as my wife's iPhone 5 in color reproduction. The S3 is nice but don't like PenTile as I can notice it and I don't like it when whites have a blue color to it.
The Evo LTE has the same SoC as the S3. If the Evo was having hardware problems with LTE so would the S3, but that is not the case (according to what I have been able to look up). Therefore it can be concluded that the LTE issues are software and not hardware.

AKA Airplane Mode Dance
If you are in an LTE area and your phone is stuck on 3G, or if your phone is on LTE and it drops back down to 3G, then toggling Airplane Mode ON and back OFF will make the radio scan and re-latch to LTE.
That's the problem with our EVOs, it's an LTE threshold and handoff problem.
I live right on the edge of LTE coverage, so my phone will handoff to 3G because it decides the LTE signal is too weak. The problem is, in my area a "weak" LTE signal is MUCH faster than a strong 3G signal. If I go into my radio options and choose "LTE only" it will hold LTE signal all day long. So the signal is there, albeit weak.
What we need is a software fix that will change our radio's signal threshold so that it will prioritize a weaker LTE signal over 3G.
I'm tired of doing the airplane mode dance. If LTE is available, I want my EVO to latch on and stay on it even if it's weak.

Thanks guys! Installing app now and have the data code saved for a rainy day as well
Edit : after switching to lte only, I get no data (voice or sms) but im able to run a speed test using 4g. I live in L.A. but I connect to an Albuquerque, New Mexico server I'm not sure what else I'm to do to enable lte only and keep data
It's NOT true for me that switching it to LTE only will keep it connected. I still only keep the connection for about 10 seconds and then it goes back to 3G. My understanding is that option in both *#*#4634#*#* and ##DATA# is "preferred mode." It will drop back to 3G.
And I know for sure that Sprint and HTC have an open ticket on this issue of aquiring and keeping an LTE signal. They will eventually get a fix out for it.
I used the network tool post earlier and set mine to cdma/lte... So I get 4g and voice/text.. no evdo. Which is fine by me because evdo sucks anyway lol.
Works great I now can keep 4g in my house like my gfs gs3 and not switch back to crap-do

[Q] Force 3g or disable LTE?

I was wondering if anyone can confirm if there is a way to disable LTE? I just came from the OG Razr and I was able to use the app "Phone Info" to toggle the LTE and CDMA radios. Is this app specific to Moto devices and will it work with the Samsung Radio? Or is there a better way to turn off LTE?
I'm in a non LTE area at work and want a way to keep it from searching for LTE and draining my battery. Thanks!
Edit: I guess my question is, can someone in a LTE area confirm that it is in fact working? Not being in a LTE area, I do not know how to confirm that the radio is being shut off. Thanks!

Yep, use the Phone Info app from the Play Store. Once installed, open it up and select "Device information." Scroll down a bit to a the box labeled "Set preferred network type." In the box, select CDMA auto (PRL). That will turn off the LTE radio.
Each time you reboot your phone, it will reset, so you'll have to go back into the app to change things.

I can change back and forth without any problems. After changing back, it sometimes takes a little bit for the 4G to pick back up. Are you trying to change it back in the phone's settings or through the Phone Info app?

Not true anymore. You can't switch it CDMA in the phone's stock settings . Verizon stopped having this option in the settings for any LTE device around the time that the ICS update went out for the RAZR and RAZR MAXX in the spring. It's not in the settings for the Galaxy S3, the DNA, or the Note 2. Verizon wants to move people off the 3G network and onto the 4G network. The only options in the stock settings for the Note 2 are Global, LTE/CDMA, and GSM/UMTS.
Since it can't be changed in the stock settings, that's why people are asking how to put the phone into 3G-only mode. There's a menu that can be accessed through the dialer, but an app like Phone Info makes things a little easier.
Yea, this option works great. I know each one is different, but with mine I had to go into the settings to get it to move back to LTE. Now that I am sure I can get LTE back then I will have qualms about using this. Thanks to the OP for this. Great IDEA!
I've always had luck setting it to "3G Only" in Phone Info, but have found you have to switch back to LTE in the actual Phone Menu.

Not true. The Phone Info app changes the entire network connection, not just data. Going into LTE only disables the CDMA radio, which is used for both voice and 3G data. It doesn't separate the two. This is well documented across forums online from people who have tried it. I've also previously tried it on other devices.
On the Note 2, if you select LTE only in the Phone Info app, it doesn't seem to actually put the phone into LTE only mode. If you exit the app and then open it back up, you'll see that it's reverted back to the previous mode (either Global or LTE/CDMA/EvDo). So that would explain still being able to make/receive calls and texts if you tried going into LTE only mode on the Note 2.
But if the phone was truly in LTE only mode, you couldn't make/receive calls or texts.

Doesn't seem to be turning off the LTE radio
Nonrooted, completely stock.
So, I got phone info, and chose cdma (PRL) only as discussed above.
And, I'm seeing NO improvement in battery life.
Measured anecdotally, over the last several days and from battery monitor widget.
I'm always at approximately 40% by 6pm (after unplugging at 650am) with average usage.
Isn't LTE a power hog? If it's disabled, shouldn't we see a measurable difference in battery life?
Any input greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
F

The LTE versions of the Note 2 are getting battery life that's on par with the international 3G-only version, even when LTE is in use. So I'm not surprised that you're not finding there to really be a difference. Significant strides have been made over the past year that have made LTE much more energy efficient than it has a reputation for being.
The only time that I'd really think anyone would see a major difference is if you're in a fringe LTE area where the phone is constantly jumping back and forth between LTE and 3G. In a situation like that, disabling LTE will probably lead to a noticeable increase in battery life. Outside of that, the battery drain will probably be pretty similar.
Interesting - thanks for the info!
Seems counterintuitive that turning off a radio and denergizing it would seem to have almost nill effect over several hours - especially in light of the article the other day about how VoLTE was such a huge drain (approx 140%) of regular CDMA voice traffic - due to the peculiar nature of CDMA+LTE with simultaneous voice and lte data.
Odd, another data point, on mine, disabling wifi as well seems to have no substantial affect either.
Maybe this is due to the Qualcomm ?gobi? chip? Supposed to be pretty badass iirc.
Hate to necro-bump this thread, but is there a way to do this still? For whatever reason, LTE at my desk at work gets almost zero data while 3g works fine (albeit a little slow). The app mentioned previously doesn't seem to have any way to change settings.

How to toggle 2g/3g off while keeping 4g on

I'm looking for a way to only have 4g on on my note 2. In my current location I have 1-2 bars of 4g but my phone continues to switch back to 3g every few minutes. I was able to do this on my thunderbolt with lte on/off app(had toggles for 2g/3g/4g) so I'm wondering why it seems so difficult to perform on my note 2 or if it's simply a beans compatibility issue.
The problem is when I have a low/moderate 4g signal(1-2 bars) my phone seems to prefer 3g and switches to it every few minutes. The only way I can get it to switch back is to enable then disabled airplane mode and it will hold for another few minutes.
Still looking for any input/apps/ideas, thanks
Bump still looking for a solution to this. Currently in a situation(new location from before) with 1-2 bars of 4g but my phone continues to switch between 3g and 4g. There must be a way to "lock" 4g or toggle 3g off. This was super easy to do on my Thunderbolt

Install an AOSP rom. They almost all have a 4g toggle.

But do they also have a 2g/3g toggle? I need to be able to leave 4g on while not allowing it to switch to 3g. I guess I could try this but I really love beans rom and have actually been very satisfied with touchwiz in general with the note 2. But I guess I try that as a last resort. Thanks

I'm pretty sure there isn't an option for this that actually works. If our phone doesn't have 4g I think it just goes to 3g and there is no option to toggle it to 2g/3g. There was a thread that suggests switching it to 2g to save battery life, but all of the apps that are used to accomplish this don't have that option. I think it might've been something just in the international ROMS but i'm not sure.

That's upsetting to hear, it used to be so easy on my thunderbolt. The problem is when I have a decent 4g connection(by decent I mean 1-2 bars, not great) my phone seems to still prefer 3g which I typically have 3+ bars of. The problem is that 1-2 bars of 4g is substantially faster than 3+ bars of 3g. I can usually flip airplane mode on and off and lock a 4g signal for a minute or two but then it seems to jump right back to 3g. Incredibly frustrating, especially since there is one location where I spend a lot of time that this is an issue.
If anyone else has any info please let me know. Another user posted his custom application for me that was similar to the LTE on/off app(which force closes running beans 21) but his custom app force closes as well even though he stated it worked for him

I have the same issue where I live. My concern wasn't the fact the speed, though. My battery drops a lot when i'm at certain places at work because it is constantly searching, dropping, and using 3g/4g.
I looked for this awhile back, but I'm pretty sure this was a function only available on the international variants in their ROMS. That is why when you look at certain guides to improve battery life, it says to make it exactly like you are speaking of.
