Anyone else upset that we cant get the galaxy gear until we get android 4.3 which may never happen in our case. Hopefully someone comes up with something.

Thank god!! I didn't get to watch the whole stream bc I was in a class. Anyone think its worth it to buy it before hand if your interested just incase it gets back ordered? Also anyone know if it has any functionality without pairing it to a phone?

It's $299 so zero interest here but I would guess no point without a device.

I didn't watch the live stream, but all reports are showing S3, S4 getting 4.3 and S4 getting watch functionality. No one (engadget, Pocketnow, and android central) mentioned note 2 at all.
Besides, if international gets 4.3 in October, it will be spring before Verizon official drops.

In the live stream he basically said "Support for the S3 and S4 coming soon with the Note 2 shortly after that"

There we go, I knew he said something similar to what I thought. Thank you for the quote.

Unfortunately ....
He says upgrade to make it work with the Galaxy Gear..... while it 99% means 4.3 .... there still is that 1% chance its just gonna be adding support for the watch and no major update to the android version.

that makes it sound like the watch won't work with the Note 2. It sounds like 4.3 is coming, but not that support. Probably because they want you to buy the note 3.
Maybe it will get hacked, or maybe the note 2 doesn't have the sensors needed. Don't know, don't care. Samsung is going down a path I'm not willing to follow. They are trying to become their own ecosystem.

The Galaxy Gear will work with the Note 2... why else would they even mention the update for the Note 2 during the unveiling of the watch if it wasn't for support of it?

if you listen to the live stream, it definitely doesn't say conclusively that it will work.
They stated that the update for Gear compatibility will come in October for the S4 and that the S3 and Note 2 will be getting updates in October as well, but didn't say it was for the Gear. Not sure our phones have the newest BT low energy that the watch pairs to. The S4 does.
Even the tech sites are divided. The verge says it will work, engadget says S4 only:
http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/04/galaxy-gear-hands-on/
Perhaps the biggest setback, however, is that the Galaxy Gear is only compatible with the Note 3 and the new Note 10.1, and while it will likely work with the GS4 once that device gets an Android 4.3 update, we don't expect that it'll ever function with non-Samsung smartphones and tablets.

That is literally word for word exactly what was said on the live stream, all one concise thought. The second sentence is a run off of the first.

yeah, i'm sure we'll find out more conclusively about 4.3 pretty soon. God only knows then add another 6 months to whatever date it's released for Verizon to get it. :cyclops:

[Q] S2 NOW: is it still worth it?

Hey galaxy s2'ers!!
I am the owner of a HTC HD2 that has been my pride and joy for a long time. However recently its mini-USB port and GPS broke/failed on me and I decided to move on.
I'm looking for a phone I can keep for a couple of years and it must have decent camera, battery life and good GPS reception. Games/3D performance tends to be rather secondary to me.
I checked with my carrier and I can get a brand new 16GB Galaxy S2 for about 200€. There is a more or less similar question to this one here in the forum but do tell me what you think: is the GS2 a good buy these days and for this price?
Thank you!
Yes.Buy 10 of them, keep 1 and stick the other 9 on eBay-youll make a killing.Ones with broken screens sell for that!

I actually like Nexus' slight curvature on the frontal plane but the lack of expansion ports is a deal breaker..
Thanks for the input guys
But whats the total cost/contract.I only buy new unbranded ones and get a sim deal separately. It works out more but I can put it through my business.
Is your deal the phone and minutes etc for the 200 euros.
If it is then buy as much as you can, stick em on eBay and chuck the sims

You bet, it is! I just bought a SGS2 4 months for now, and I am completely satisfied and overwhelmed with it. It has the best package for an Android phone. Tons of modifications depending on your taste, and a very powerful hardware that can run almost every app & games. The only phone I would consider to replace my SGS2 is non other han its successor.
Reference: I've constantly checked other Android phones to compare, but nothing beats this beast from what I see.
Go for S III, or Nexus or S II,
If you want to fully Customise your device go for SII or SIII
If not, other variants of S II Like S II X or HD LTE SGH - I757M have greater Hardware 1.5 Ghz i think.

You bet I'm still here: thanks for the input guys! I'm having a meeting with my carrier agent - or whatever you call it - to discuss what phone I'll be getting: I share a professional plan with other colleagues so I get to chose a new phone for a low cost from time to time.. hence the 200€ :victory:
don't worry about sgs2, it definitely worth the money since this great phone beat iphone 4s last year. if you are looking for more budget android smartphone, get sgs2 since the price drop a lot since the launch of sgs3. well, if you can afford sgs3, i will recommend it. :good:
i have been using my sgs2 for almost 6 months now, i wanna say that i am more happy to continue to be with my baby. sgs2 get most of the android update, and i just flash a jelly bean ROM.
sgs2 is more easier to root, to customize, to tweak compare to HTC (where you need the whatever S-OFF thing). i almost kill my friend HTC phone by just trying to S-OFF it. stupid bootloader.
conclusion, if you want cheaper, daily use phone, you can go for sgs2. if you want newer phone, get sgs3 or galaxy note 2.:good: just get samsung phone, you get tonnes of tutorials, guides here.

There has been 1 week since I bought my Galaxy S2 and I'm telling you. I love every bit of it. EVERYTHING. The camera, the screen, design, the UI and everything. Having said that, though the reason why I'm in love with it is maybe because my older phone was only a Samsung Galaxy Mini.
i don't know about you, but I think you can't get a better phone with that price (200€). I got mine for €220 and I don't regret any cent spent on it.
worth all that money and much more.
good for you ^^ enjoy every bit of it. like my s2. i am still not bored of it since JB is here for s2 as well ^^

[Q] 7+ inch tablet which can be used as a phone?

One of my big disappointments with the Nexus 7 is that it can't be used as a phone (meaning GSM, not data/wifi-based).
As of now, it seems to me the best tablet which can be used as a phone is still the samsung galaxy tab 7.7 (assuming the Note 10.1 is too big to carry around, personal preference, that). Of course, that one looks like it's never getting JB or any other updates from Samsung (so much for the 1 and a half year pledge...).
Any other recommendations? Seen rumours of a 7 or 7.7-inch note, that would fit the bill assuming I can afford it.

Really, only Samsung makes tablets with gsm? Note and note 2 is just a bit too small to be a hybrid device for me, would still need my galaxy tab 10.1 for music sheets etc that way...

Get Note 2 or wait for Galaxy S4

Hey all, this question is driving me nuts. My birthday is in March and I can get the Note 2.
I love the Note 2 for its massive screen and stylus.
On the other hand I could wait a few more months and get the Galaxy S4 which will surely be one of the hottest phones of the year with great specs and I'll get it right away instead of buying a several month old phone.
Opinions?

In all reality do you think it's specs will be much better then the note? It will simply be the current flavor of the month but in reality won't be that much improved.
If you like the note get it. If you're going to wait for the s4, then may as well wait for the note 3, but by that time the nexus 5 will be coming you so should wait for it and so on. My point is there will always be a new hot phone coming.
So if the phone you like is here already then get it or you will just keep waiting on the next big thing and never actually get any. I can say I've owned most the high end phones on Verizon and nothing can touch this note!

The screen will be bigger on the Note 2 and the GS4 won't have an sPen. I'd say get the Note 2, unless you can do without those two awesome features. I personally can't and won't. My next phone will be the Note 3.
I may be in the minority, but it's rumored that on March 15th we'll know what the S4 will be. Seeing as how it's just a little over a month away, I would personally wait to see if it offers anything that the Note 2 doesn't before you spend $600 and/or get locked into a 2 year contract.

There simply won't be enough advances in technology for the S4 to be worth the wait, not to mention you will have to pay the premium subsidized pricing if you go that route. Of course if you want a smaller screen, then the S4 would be the obvious choice. However, the specs along for the S4 don't guarantee a good user experience where the galaxy note 2 has already been established as providing a good user experience due to the stylus and customized UI that it comes on the device.
With phones, you won't ever be the king of the mountain for long before something better hits the market, so you might as well choose a device that best meets your needs. I was looking for a device that would give me decent battery life, but I didn't expect the note 2, to provide more than 3 days of battery life under light usage and 2 days under normal usage.
Re: [Q] Get Note 2 or wait for Galaxy S4

Changes so fast.
With the specs and rapidly growing development on the note ll I am quite happy with my purchase and feel my device is something that will make me happy for a couple of years. If you want a phone the size of the G3 but with the reception (or other feature of interest) of the note 2; I would wait and see what the G4 has to offer; however if you are happy with the note 2 form factor/feature set then I would just get the note 2. From my perspecitve the note 2 has two flaws (which might be fixed in a future phone):
a) The screen is vulnerable if dropped (the newer phones are suppose to be better in this arena though I'm not sure if they will still be as scratch resistant)
b) I would prefer a phone a bit narrower than the note 2 (length is less of an issue).
-
As an FYI I do have a note 2 (which replaces the droid razr). I really only have two complaints (width which I mentioned) and i prefer the mail client (stock andriod) on the razr (and tablets) to the one on the note 2. I really wans't unhappy with the razr but i purchased it before the maxx was announced and it had rather poor battery life and after a year the battery life was just not acceptable any longer and the note was the only phone I found reasonable at this date (I would have considered the dna if it had a larger battery; and some of the applications I use such as xscope) don't really work well with the on screen buttons of the hd-razr).
-
I still consider the stylus largely a gimick though over time that view might change; i have small hands but the weight is fine - and the phone is significantly more responsive than the razr. One amusing thing I learned when er removing the auto wifi notify is the note 2 has very fast internal sd; something the tf700 (asus) should pay attention to (for those in teh dark ft700 has a bad problem with lag due to a miserably slow internal sd).

I certainly wouldn't call the width a "flaw"
I hate phones that have long narrow screens, I want my screen as wide as possible.

I cant imagine a more useless post, besides mine of course

I'm back from a GS4

I had a Galaxy S4 and I honestly couldn't stand it. Sure, it benchmarked higher than the Note 2, but after 8 days of use some of the buttons stopped working. Also, there's no bootloader unlock for the new firmware yet so we only got root. I used ODIN to go back to the stock firmware and wiped the device, went to Verizon and got my $650 back. I'm glad I'm back here.

I do! :good:
I got the S4 on release and I like it. Just put my SIM in my Note 2 today for the first time since I got the S4 and it really does perform. The specs are higher on the S4 but I can't tell the difference. My only issue with the Note is it's size, which was the reason I bought it. I just can't do some things one handed, things I didn't think would matter. But, if size hadn't been an issue, this guy would still be my dd. Also, since I bought the S4 at release, it's unlocked and running PACman 4.3 and running it well. If I couldn't run AOSP, I wouldn't want it either.
I'm grandfathered in on unlimited data and buy all my devices unsubsidized.

Should've used that 650 for the note 3. I can never go back to a smaller screen, even if it is somewhat inferior from a hardware standpoint.

I sold my note 2 in craigslist for $450, found a brand new galaxy s4 for $499. $49 to upgrade meh.
Even with a gs4 rooted with cm10, it couldn't hold a candle to my note. Sure, the screen was brighter and sharper, but the build quality on the gs4 is horrible.
Needless to say I quickly sold the gs4 on swappa for $550. Picked up another note 2 off craigslist for $375.
The only thing that can drag me away from my note 2 is a note 3. I just hope the note 3 build quality is better than the gs4.
Seems like Samsung's build quality is actually regressing with each new device

I'm hooked on the SPEN, can't imagine getting another phone unless it has it.
I got rid of my GS4 yesterday and will be waiting for the GN3 announcement in 13 days. Looking forward to a hopefully quick launch. Rumors now say S800 variant is all that will be launching first since the Exynos 5420 is having issues (go figure) so maybe Verizon will launch it right away.

Should've used that 650 for the note 3. I can never go back to a smaller screen, even if it is somewhat inferior from a hardware standpoint.

I love the Notes size, other phones seem so small when I mess with apps on em now.
after having the note 2, not really sure what my next phone will be. Tired of dropped calls in my house where HTC phones never had problems. Might try the femtocel route, but verizon wants me to pay for it. Moto droid ultra maxx is interesting, esp since I have plex working perfectly now so I don't need 64gb of media on my phone.

I'd rather go for hardware quality than superficial looks of a device. Looks don't control the performance/quality.

Nike+ on Gear S designed by a moron

Hi,
The tread is so other people don't make the same mistake and they don't have high expectations. I was able to connect Gear S to Sony Xperia (the usual: some features worked, some didn't). One of the main purposes of buying this watch was running outdoors. I think there is no way to use S Health with a non-Samsung phone. Nike+ works. However Nike+ was designed/coded by a complete idiot. I am extremely frustrated. There is a big white distance number. Other metrics (time, pace, time of day) are displayed with a small black scrolling font on a red background. The scroll is pretty fast. It is impossible for any normal human being to read those scrolling numbers, especially while running: they are too small, scroll too fast, the contrast is too little.
The design is as if they want to discourage people from using the app! Or maybe it was designed by someone who never run?! I am returning the watch!
BTW, you can find "revelations" on the Internet about reverting Gear S colors in order to use Nike+. Doing it breaks other watch functions and doesn't help much. Why would we have to go through so much hassle for the very basic feature: seeing running time in a running app?!?!?!?!

Why not use S health?

I believe the 9/17/15 S Health update added support for non-Samsung Android devices. It's available in Google Play.
And he didn't even complain about how inaccurate the GPS is. I shaved a minute of my mile time switching back to the Nike app on my phone.

simplest solution, install android on the watch and download any running app youd like, like endomodo or so, or download nike app for android ahahahha
Thanks for replying. I have returned the Gear S watch. Samsung did everything it could to discourage me from using it with non-samsung phones. No problem! Fortunately, there is something called: competition. I am thinking about buying LG Urbane 2 LTE. It will be available in a week or two. If not Urbane, the progress is fast and there will be more wireless/phone watches soon.

I'm also interested in the LG Urban 2 LTE but need to see more details first. I have absolutely zero interest in another Samsung phone. They are pure crap. My current phone, Galaxy Alpha, not even one year old can't get a decent reception anywhere. The only reason I haven't jump on Nexus 5X or 6P is because of my Gear S.

So you but a low end device and then complain about a low end experience? Try a note 4 or 5 or s5 or s6. All of them are impressive devices.

First of all, Galaxy Alpha is not a low end device. Don't confuse it with A3/5. Not the same thing. I have owned Galaxy S, S2, S3. All premium devices at their time. And they are all craps (original S has crappy, barely working GPS, a well known/documented problem, S2 is a so so device. S3 battery circuit craps out a few days past 1-year warranty). Have no interest in Note 4/5 or S 5/6. Handled them and they are not that impressive.
Why would you continue to buy samsung devices if all of them are "crap" as you put it? Do you always buy products you hate and then continue to do so as a form of self punishment?
It is none of your business what devices I buy. But I thought I need to speak flankly about Samsung products since I probably owned more Samsung products than most.
